Primarily self-taught, Tiessen says when he was very young, he was mentored by a teacher at McMaster University in Ontario. Although his family is from Canada, Tiessen was born in Moscow when his parents were professors there. He was first introduced to art by a Russian nanny who watched him while his parents taught their classes, he says. “I had a Russian nanny who did a lot of arts and crafts with me,” Tiessen says. “I left Moscow when I was six. I have a Russian soul.” On the day of the Delusional exhibit opening, LeVine named the top three winners in the show; Tiessen earned First Place and his prize is a solo show at LeVIne’s gallery.

JC Fridays concert “Art Politic” intersects music with socio political issues
Con Vivo Music returns to JC Fridays to present “Art Politic”, a concert of modern chamber music composed in response to socio political issues, including the Attica Prison riot, murder rates in Chicago, the Iraq War, a letter by J.S. Bach to his city council, and what it means to be an American. The concert will be performed by a unique
8-person ensemble of voice, violin, cello, saxophone, guitar, bass, keyboard, and percussion. Staged in the Council Chambers of Jersey City’s City Hall, this Concert will feature Frederic Rzewski’s Coming Together, a minimalist beat-driven composition that sets text from a letter by Sam Melville, a prisoner at the Attica

Correctional Facility, hinting at “the inevitable direction of [his] life”. Two months later the Attica Prison riot took place. 1,0000 prisoners overtook the prison and held staff hostage for four days until the state police took control of the prison, resulting in at least 43
deaths, of the prison, resulting in at least 43 deaths, including that of Sam Melville. CVM will also present Kevin Clark’s Census Americans, a work with ever-changing text drawn from the twitter bot Census Americans, which tweets descriptions of real
Americans every hour using U.S. Census Bureau data. The musical material draws on protest songs written by the labor activist Joe Hill, reminding us that a key part of what it means to be American is to constantly strive for positive change.

Meet Christine Goodman, New Director of JC Cultural Affairs From Art House to City Hall; Goodman’s Got the Goods
By Sally Deering
F
resh from her tenure as Executive Director of Art House Productions in Jersey City, Christine Goodman has been appointed Director of Jersey City’s Cultural Affairs division. For 16 years Goodman oversaw the cultural offerings at Art House, presenting plays, concerts, classes for adults and kids, and the annual Snow Ball fundraiser. Goodman now brings her expertise and talents to the City’s Cultural Affairs office. River View Observer asked the new director to share a little about herself and her vision for Jersey City’s cultural future. RVO: What is your background in the arts? Where did you go to school? Did you start out as a performer? CG: My background is in nonprofit management, theater, and producing. I founded Art House Productions in 2001 and presented a wide range of performing and visual arts programs as the organization’s Executive Director. I went to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University where I was a Drama major. Through that program
I trained in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. RVO: Where are you from originally and what brought you to Jersey City? CG: I am originally from Silver Spring, MD, right outside of Washington, DC. I came to Jersey City halfway through college at NYU to save some money in housing. It was supposed to be a temporary situation, but I fell in love with Jersey City and stayed. That was 20 years ago! I can’t imagine living anywhere else. RVO: When did you start Art House Productions and what were the early days like -- you were down by St. Francis Hospital near Hamilton Park, right? CG: Art House held its first event, an open mic, in direct response to 9/11. It was the end of September 2001. The organization was formed out of a desire to connect with other residents and to use art as a vehicle for processing what we were all going through at that time. In early 2002, Art House moved to Victory Hall on Grand St. in Paulus Hook, and began presenting a poetry series twice a month. That
poetry series expanded into a taped TV show for public access, live theater, literary events, and the citywide arts festival, JC Fridays. In 2006, Art House moved into its own dedicated space on the top floor of the old St. Francis Nursing School building on Hamilton Park where the breadth of programming continued to expand. RVO: What do you like about the JC Office of Cultural Affairs and what would you like to change? CG: I have interacted with the Office of Cultural Affairs for many, many years and I was still surprised to discover how much our team manages. We are the permitting office for all events. Every cultural event, festival, block party, and parade comes through our doors. The process has improved significantly under our current administration, and I’d like to continue the good work that’s being done on that front. I would like the public to know more about the free events we present and support all year long – Summerfest at Liberty State Park, the Berry Lane Park music series, the Jersey City
Art and Studio Tour, Fourth of July, Movies in the Parks, the list goes on! I am also dedicated to supporting our professional arts organizations. I want to see them thrive, and to find new ways of helping them expand their capacity. RVO: Will you try to get more performance venues for theater and dance companies -- we know how scarce they are? CG: We are heartened by the fact that there are growing efforts by both non-profits and private organizations to advance the availability of art and performance space within the city. We are certainly in support of those efforts. RVO: Will you continue the JC Artists Studio Tour -- any changes there? CG: This year, the JCAST will be held October 14th and 15th, so mark your calendars! The kickoff party is Friday, October 13th from 6-9pm. I have two goals this year. My first goal is to focus on the tour aspect of the experience. I want to get as many people as possible out into Jersey City, where they can venue hop and discover new art. You can take a walking tour, a bike tour, or
you can hop on one of our free shuttle buses accompanied by a tour guide. All of them will be unique, curated experiences for our visitors. My second goal is to demystify the art buying process, and encourage visitors to use JCAST as an opportunity to support our artists. So to all who are reading this: do you have wall space? Then get ready! JCAST is the perfect opportunity to discover (and purchase) great art. RVO: The City has changed and become more people-friendly with movies under the stars and outdoor music concerts during the summer. Will you be broadening that spectrum of entertainment offerings? CG: That’s an interesting question. I think it is important for our programming to stay fresh and exciting. We want to provide opportunities for residents to come out and enjoy fun, safe, free events. I will always look for ways to improve what we are doing, to keep it top-notch, and I want to make sure these programs are reaching residents in all wards. Cont’d on page 8

BEST OF THE WURST WURSTBAR Celebrates First Year in JC
Specialty Sausages, Craft Beers & Apple Ciders Turn First-Timers into Regulars By Sally Deering
S
tepping inside WURSTBAR is like walking into an Edward Hopper painting. It has an old 1930s feel to it; muted colors with minimalist tables and chairs in a warm glow of dimly lit lamps, framed with black and white wall tiles reminiscent of old French butcher shops.
Aaron Kahn pours a cold brew. Aaron Kahn and his partners Ladislav Sebestyan and Andy Ivanov designed the décor to match the menu, a one-sheet wonder of homemade sausages, hot dogs and poutines (hand-crafted fries topped with sauces and garnishes) that are guaranteed to make you thirsty enough to try one of their many craft brews and apple ciders. Chef Abelardo Rivera-Baez helped the team design the menu which features homemade sausages like the Ducktales, duck sausage
and fig mustard; the El Cubano, kielbasa, roasted pork, mojo mayo and Swiss; and the Hunting Season, venison sausage with caramelized onions and apricot relish. “We have Irish bangers and chorizo sausage; we have a lot of different styles,” Kahn says. “We have a Japanese-style hot dog with Sriracha ginger and seaweed, and our fries are hand-cut Belgiumstyle fries.”
The Poutines include the Haus Poutine, hauscut fries with cheese Along with the curds, ale or sub vegJapanese-style dog gie gravy; the Banh called the Samurai Mi Poutine with haus Snack there’s the Pop cut fries, cheese curds, Goes the Weiner, a shredded pork and beef frank with cheese Hoisin gravy; and the sauce, fried jalapenos Chicken Masala with and chopped bacon; and haus-cut fries, cheese the Maui Bow Wowie, curds, chicken sausage a beef frank with Spam, and spicy masala gravy. grilled pineapple and chipotle mayo.

WURSTBAR seats about 70 in the dining room and there’s outdoor seating, too. Along with the four-tops and two-tops in the dining room, there are three long community tables, suitable for big groups. “Unseen”, an exhibition by Ann Kinney and Don Sichler, will open to the public on August 18, 2017 through September 16, 2017 at hob’art cooperative gallery, 720 Monroe Street, Suite E208, Hoboken, NJ. The artists will put in perspective an assemblage of their work. A reception to meet the artists will be held on Saturday August 19, 6-8pm. Gallery hours are Thursday/Friday, 4-7pm, Saturday 1-5pm. The artists thank the Monroe Art Center and hob’art co-operative gallery for their support in this exhibition. “Unseen” is an exhibit of photographic, collage and mixed media works, which focus on the essential elements that are often overlooked in everyday comings and goings. The images delve into the subject matter to reveal the unseen or unintended.
“Trees” Don Sichler
“Cotton Exchange Anne Kinney Ann Kinney’s photograph’s focus on the images within the commonplace as she finds things are not what they seem. In her collages, she juxtaposes images to redefine their
ordinariness. She sees her work as a photofusion of images and materials, combining colored pencil, watercolor, pastel, ink and mixed media and her photographs. Don Sichler’s discovers art in the images he photographs in looking for the things that most people don’t see. His photography uses color and distortion to draw us into the picture leaving us with a sense of more than meets the eye. Free parking is available at the side of the building on 7th Street and is wheelchair accessible.
