Hudson Shakespeare Presents Romeo & Juliet in Hudson Parks Rival Families, Two Teens in Love, A Dismal Fate Awaits
By Sally Deering
“I said I wouldn’t direct Romeo & Juliet until I “These violent delights knew what I wanted to have violent ends do with it,” Fair says. And in their triumph die, “These young tempestulike fire and powder ous teens fall in love and Which, as they kiss, condie. There’s a song Mandy sume.” Patinkin sings, a mashup of ‘You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught’ from South Pacific and ‘Children hat happens when Will Listen’ from Into the two feuding families poison Woods. Mackenzie Menter as Juliet and Joshua Blount as Romeo in HSC’s Romeo & Juliet. The Romeo & Juliet cast also features Juliana Valente as Nurse; Kamran Saliani as Friar Laurence/ Prince; Tiffany Faulkner as Mercutio/Lady Montague/ Apothecary; Leon Morgan as Lord Capulet; Taylor Baskin as Lady Capulet; Matthew Cavender as Tybalt/Paris; and Lindsay Milligan as Benvolio. Combat director is Adele Rylands. Performing Shakespeare can be tough on its own, but playing outside in make-shift performance venues brings challenges to the actors as well as the director, Fair says. “One of the biggest challenges for the actors is juggling noise and distractions,” Fair says.
“You have to stay really focused. There are going to be kids who can’t sit through a long performance. You’re not going to be in a black box where everyone is well-mannered. They deal with heat. Bugs. And different terrain. One park is hilly without a lot of grass another is concrete which is coliseum-like. We have to adjust exits and entrances. An actor in this company has to be able to have fun and be a team player.” For the director, putting a show up like Romeo & Juliet takes a lot of preplanning, Fair says. “I have to pre-plan where props are going to be preset,” Fair says. “Children
watching the show think the weapons are cool and walk away with them. We don’t do an intermission, so the actors’ energy has to be sustained for two hours, so I’m mentally preparing them, physically preparing them. I come from a program where we did some weird stuff with Shakespeare. I move scenes. I weave scenes. I play with time and space.” Fair, who also works as an actress, teaches at a Middle School in Astoria, Queens. The Jersey City resident just did a production of A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, where she played the role of Stella. Fair enjoys directing, she says, and she Cont’d on page 3
LOVE HURTS Cont’d from page 2 believes Shakespeare is as relevant today as it was during Shakespeare’s time. “Why is Shakespeare still so appealing,” Fair says. “Shakespeare was able to touch the human heart. Beforehand, not too many playwrights got to the heart of what it is to be human.” If you go Romeo & Juliet www.hudsonshakespeare. com

ROLLIN’ ON THE RIVER
20 Rockin’ Bands, Musicians & Vocalists Perform Live on Weehawken’s Waterfront Lawn Chairs, Picnic Baskets, the NY Skyline and Free Music
By Sally Deering
O
n a recent Sunday afternoon, Hamilton Park on Boulevard East in Weehawken, with its breathtaking view of the New York Skyline, transformed from pastoral park to electric guitar-riffing rock concert with residents and visitors chilling on its great lawn.
Mike Montanaro recruits young fans to play instruments at Hamilton Park The group rocking the crowd was Finish This, a local old school garage band that dates back to the 1970s when bandmates Joey Cimino, Billy Valentine, Mike Culhane, Mike Montanaro, John Forsdahl, Mike Waddle, and lead guitar Matt Gale’s dad were high school buddies in West New York. At Hamilton Park, the band, which knows more than 300 songs from all their years of gigging, performed a two-hour set of iconic 60s tunes like Wooly Bully and In the Midnight Hour. “The audience was great,”
Cimino says after the show. “Whenever you see an audience from 2 –to-80 having a good time, you know its going great. That’s why we were the opening show. They wanted to get a good crowd – and they did.” Finish This’ performance officially kicked-off the Hamilton Park 2017 Free Summer Concert Series happening every Sunday from 5-7 pm through Labor Day Weekend. After a break for July 4th, the series kicks off again on Sunday, July 9 with Swingadelic, followed by Big Mamou on July 16, Boulevard East Collective on July 23 and the Joe Ruddick Quartet on July 30. In August, it’s the Annie Minogue Band with opening act Violet on Aug. 6, Donna Coney Island and South Street Station on Aug. 13, Anthony Bez on Aug. 20, The Joni Project on Aug. 27 and Zaccai Curtis on Sept. 3. HEAR YE, HEAR YE! COMETH TO BOHO FOR SOME FUNETH Visit the Bayonne Renaissance Festival on July 22nd for some Medieval Fun! Where Pirates Sing, Knights Joust, and a Magician Breathes Fire in a Kilt By Sally Deering Theater troupes have a passion for costumed period pieces and the Bayonne Theater Company has gone back to the Middle Ages to bring Boho residents and visitors some rollicking medieval fun. The 2nd annual Bayonne Renaissance Festival happens Sat, July 22nd from noon to 7 pm and much of the entertainment is a step back in time. For instance, when was the last time you witnessed a joust, watched a pirate sing and dance, or caught a Celtic Magician dressed in a kilt breathe fire? That’s just some of the fun Adam J. Semanchick, President of the Bayonne Theater Company and the Bayonne Renaissance Committee has up their chain mail sleeves when they turn the G. Thomas DiDomenico Park into an amphitheater filled with music, Shakespeare, games, food and lots of medieval shenanigans. This is the second year for the Bayonne Renaissance Festival and Semanchick says 2017 is going to be a banner year for the event with more entertainment, more concessions, more children’s activities and special offerings for the adults, too. Couples that want to renew

Other entertainers include Firebreather Daniel GreenWolf. “This year we’re adding jousting, archery, a blacksmith, a fiddler, a bar band, and a local art show,” Semanchick says. “Our art curator Erin Kachmar runs the Jewish Community Center Art Gallery in Bayonne. About 30 artists, all Bayonne & JC artists., will be displaying their works.” BCB Bank and Carepoint Health are sponsors for this year’s event, Semanchick says, and the theater company has been scouting acts for the event. “We’ve been pulling acts from other Renaissance Festivals,” Semanchick says. “We’ve been scouting around and and got to meet some really cool acts. And we brought every act back from last year.”

The Knights of Avalon will perform sword fights and the Crimson Pirates featuring Dan O’Driscoll of Bayonne will also be featured. Another musical act to take the stage will be Three Pints Shy. “They’re a really funny band,” Semanchick says. “They’re from Manhattan.
