ust off your old college guitar, practice a few chords and you, too can be a member of the World’s Largest Band. If you’re not doing anything Thursday, July 20 at 6 pm, then why not grab your guitar, banjo or ukulele and head down to Sinatra Park in Hoboken to play a few songs with hundreds of other guitar-enthusiasts. That’s what Guitar Bar’s James Mastro hopes to assemble – 954 strummers at least – in order to set a Guinness Book of World Record’s record for the World’s Largest Band. It’s Guitar Bar’s fifth attempt to break the record for the World’s Largest Band; Beijing, China holds the current title with 953 participants. “We’re calling on anyone and everyone with an acoustic guitar, mandolin, ukulele or any other acoustic instrument to play along,” Mastro says. Led by members of the Guitar Bar All Stars, the event begins at 6 pm with registration, then at 7 pm a few warm-up tunes like “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” followed by other easy songs beginner guitarists can follow,

Mastro says. This year, strummers who show up will be playing tunes by Chuck Berry, the Rolling Stones, and many more, taking their cues from the All Stars. Whether you’re an experienced musician or just starting out, Guitar Bar can help you prepare for the event. Chord charts and YouTube instructional videos that ‘band members’ can play along with are posted on Guitar Bar’s Facebook page. Participants can also send Guitar Bar any questions or suggestions. All songs and information you need are at guitarbar. com/worldrecord. Don’t forget to join

This funding will help us to take greater advantage of our location on Newark Bay. I look forward to the improvements in recreation and enjoyment of our waterfront that will result from this grant.” According to an announcement from the NJDEP, the grant will provide “enhanced access to Newark Bay in Bayonne through the creation of 1,200 feet of paths and development of a shade structure and seating areas, with the goal of providing kayak access, a boat ramp, benches, and signage about the harbor and its history.” In a letter to Mayor Davis, NJDEP Commissioner Bob Martin said, “I congratulate you on your efforts to improve and expand the recreational opportunities in our state.” He added, “We look forward to working with the City of Bayonne toward the successful completion

POWERPOP TRIO Joe Waks, Kayt Hester & Bob Piersanti to Show at LITM Group exhibit opens Aug 1 in JC BY SALLY DEERING

M

asking tape artist Kayt Hester joins pop artists Bob Piersanti and Joe Waks in their new show at LITM: POWERPOP TRIO, a compilation of works that reflect moments in time. POWERPOP TRIO opens Tues, Aug 1 featuring works by the three artists, a collaboration, of sorts, that began several years back when they were in a show at gallery58 in Jersey City. All three artists’ works complement each other in a special way, Hester says. Hester works with black masking tape she cuts and whittles to create images of meaningful moments: a dad walking with his kids, a woman getting ready for work in the morning. Joe Waks’ applies humor to his paintings, iconic images we all grew up with painted quite seriously with hilarious captions. Bob Piersanti’s portraits painted in vibrant colors offer an intimate view of his figures’ worlds – his models are real Jersey City people – that also reflect a personal moment in time. “Bob, Joe and I had a show together at the Hoboken Artists Studio Tour several years ago,” Hester says. “I usually have my

Painting by Joe Waks Masking tape painting by Kayt Hester yearly solo show at LITM in August and the past two years I’ve been splitting it with people. I remembered Joe, Bob and I got along really well, and our styles work well together. We each have our own fan base. If we came together, we could have a powerful and amazing show, so I invited them to join me” Joe Waks works with iconic images from the 1950s & 60s, black images on a faded-yellow background with funny captions. Hester says she liked Waks’ work ever since she first saw it in a show at the 58 gallery. “Joe Waks is one of my favorite artists,” Hester says. “He has this sense of humor and style that is 100 percent original. The

same with Bob Piersanti. Their styles are like nobody else’s. There’s no mistaking their work.” Like Hester and Piersanti, Waks’ works have been exhibited in galleries throughout Hudson and beyond. He also has an outdoor mural on Pacific Avenue in Jersey City. Waks will be showing a series of 24 small paintings and he’s introducing color into his work, he says, because he wanted to try something a little bit different. “I’m also showing some larger pieces,” Waks says. “I had a show in Newark in March, so I’ll be showing some of the work I did there. I’m humbled and honored to be showing with Kayt and Robert. They are very accomplished at

Painting by Bob Piersanti what they do and very well known in our community. I’m super psyched.” Bob Piersanti describes his work as pop art style

portraits using locals as subjects, and he concentrates on Jersey City people, he says. Cont’d on page 9

hob’art gallery

“Piece by Piece,” an exhibition of three artists, will be open to the public from July 21 to August 12, 2017 at the hob’art gallery, Monroe Art Center, 720 Monroe Street, Hoboken. The artists, Lily Zane, collage/mixed media, France Garrido, mosaics, and Steve Zane, photography, will host a reception to meet the exhibitors on Sunday, July 23rd, 11:30am –1:30pm. Gallery hours are Thursday & Friday, 4-7pm and Saturday, 1 to 5pm as well as by appointment. The artists thank the Monroe Art Center and hob’art

gallery for their support of this exhibition. ‘Piece by Piece’ accurately describes the work that these three artists are immersed in. Lily Zane creates eerie and evocative collages & mixed media works of stitched silk organza and paper, using mercerized cotton thread, to hand stitch her works in striking compositions. Steve Zane uses a camera to piece together and illuminate the qualities of light, shade and volume. There is a sense not only of a play of light but a rhythm

one rarely sees in photography, balanced somewhere between the real and the abstracted. France Garrido executes mosaics that are rich in color, intention and design. Executing mosaics that include ceramic tile, glass, stone and Picassiette.

Like Hester and Waks, Piersanti recalls the show they had in Jersey City at the 58 gallery. “The original 58 was the hot spot,” Piersanti says “We’re all vets of 58. That’s what brought us together. It’s a mutual friendship. I’m so proud to be involved with them. That’s why we call the show Powerpop Trio. THE COMEBACK KID

Hard Grove Café Re-Hangs Its Cuban Star on First Street After 3 Years, Traditional Cuban Dishes Are Back in Downtown JC

By Sally Deering

I

ts been three years since Cuban cuisine-lovers could duck into the Hard Grove Café in Jersey City for a traditional Cuban sandwich. Well, good news! On June 26, Hard Grove opened its new restaurant & bar on First Street off Newark Ave, and so far, customers are stopping by for Hard Grove’s traditional Cuban fare and a freshly mulled Hemingway Mojito. “June 26th was our ‘soft’ opening,” owner Evelyn Padin says, “In this industry, it’s not smart to rush into a grand opening.” An attorney with a passion for cooking, Padin and her partner Carmen Mendiola co-owned Hard Grove Café when it was the go-to corner bistro on Grove Street. When the duo moved Hard Grove to its First Street digs, they brought with them Hard Grove’s original chef Rafael Valdespino, bartender Julie Cordero and floor captain Mario Lin. “They’re like our family,” Padin says. “Three years we waited to open, and so far, we’ve been blessed. We have old customers that already came in and a lot of new customers that are dropping by.”

Ropa Vieja Hard Grove’s menu features traditional Cuban Empanadas, and the very traditional Ropa Vieja (shredded beef). There’s Pueblo-Style Guacamole & Plantain Strips, the Hard Grove Burger, Calle Ocho Salad with Cilantro Dressing, Hemingway Skirt Steak & Eggs, Huevos Rancheros, Eggs Benedict and, of course, the Cuban Sandwich. “We have the best Cuban sandwich on the strip,” Padin says. “We’re known for our pork; we roast our pork.”

Page 16-July 15-July 31, 2017 River View Obsererver

Starters feature Golden Empanadas (2), the Crispy Taco Trio, Codfish Fritters, Fried Calamari, Stuffed Plantain Cups, and the Hemingway Sampler. Entrees include Lemon Salsa Chicken, Citrus Grilled Chicken, Hemingway Churrassco Steak, and Salmon Filet & Shrimp in Lemon Sauce. And then there are the drinks. Mojitos are the star of the show and served several ways like the Classic with crushed mint & sugar cane, the Desperate House

wives topped with champagne; the Electric made with Bacardi & Blue Curacao, the Diablo mixed with Tequila & Crème de Cassis, and the Cacapa made with premium aged rum. On Saturday & Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, Hard Grove serves a special brunch menu with dishes like the Lucy & Ricky French Toast stuffed with guava and cream cheese, drizzled with guava sauce and served with a choice of chorizo sausage or smoked bacon, the Belgium Waffle,

and the Breakfast Burrito. For a little fizz to the brunch menu, Padin offers a Bloody Mary/Mimosa special: two hours of a “bottomless” glass of your choice for $15. “That’s a bargain these days,” Padin says. “We have a great brunch. “Our French toast stuffed with guava & cream cheese with a guava drizzle is amazing. We have jumbo waffles with fruit compote. I have a chef I hired just for this.” Hard Grove’s been open less than a month and already certain dishes are turning one-time customers into regulars. The Mofongo is a hugely popular dish, Padin says, made with fried green plantains that are mashed like a potato and served with pork cubes that are marinated in garlic and fried. Its served with jumbo shrimp in a creole sauce. “I’m passionate about food,” Padin says, “and I love the restaurant industry. I get so much joy out of it. The creative part comes out of me, its creativity that it offers. Not to mention, I know how to cook. It’s always been my passion – and I’m successful at that too.” Day-by-day, Padin, Mendiola and their staff at Hard Grove continue to build on the restaurant’s successful return to the downtown Cont’d on page 17

Hardgrove offers courtyard dining Cont’d from page 16 Jersey City community. It takes hard work and commitment, Padin says. Future Hard Grove plans include entertainment and special cigar nights. Padin is bringing in a cigar roller and along with the freshlyrolled cigars, a special scotch menu will be on hand. And don’t forget to try out the Patio and dine al fresco alongside the handpainted mural.

“We’re happy we’re back home,” Padin says. “We may be in a different place, but we’re happy we’re here. We’re minorityowned and LGBTQ-friendly. We feel that makes us a special place.” If you go Hard Grove 284 First St, JC 201-659-6100 www.hardgrove.com
