FEARLESS ART
Proxies of Fear comes to JC Theater Center for One Night Artists Address Real Fears in Real Time
By Sally Deering These are scary times; no question, and several local artists including filmmaker Christian A. Morán of Jersey City will be sharing their art and urban fears in PROXIES OF FEAR, an evening of film, poetry, music and dialogue. PROXIES OF FEAR takes place Fri, Oct. 27, at 8 pm at Jersey City Theatre Center’s Merseles Studios. The evening will spotlight artists’ personal stories, and the experiences that inspired them to face their fears. On the bill are Grand Slam Champ of Jersey City Slam Rashad Wright, a live workshop by FX make-up artist Stephanie Albarracin, the band Drum and a Tantrum who wrote the award-winning score for Morán’s film Let’s Play Dead Girl and a showing of the film. Morán, the event’s coordinator with Cynthya Blandino of Jersey City, brought the artists together as part of the FEAR series going on all month at Merseles Studios. The evening’s host is Edwin “El Miedo” Pagan of Latin Horror with Special guest FLY from the Hold The Chaser podcast who will conduct interviews with audience members. The $15 ticket price ($10 for students & seniors) includes refreshments from sponsors O’LaLa

“In Let’s Play Dead Girl, you have an African-Latina trying to fit in to her little world of friends,” Morán says. “Even though one girl is Caucasian MexicanAmerican, and one is Asian, they are both light-skinned. No matter how things are set up in the world, the darker you are, the darker you have to go through these trials. Every race has that problem with darker skin.”

No Peeking Theatre presents Halloween Show ‘MOTHER LEEDS’ Audience Blindfolded for Sensory Theater Experience

udiences attending No Peeking Theatre productions are handed a program to find out “Who’s Who” in the cast, and a blindfold to wear during the show. That’s because No Peeking Theatre productions are presented with an emphasis on everything but sight and the actors and stage hands collaborate to create an atmospheric theatrical experience like no other. Beginning Fri, Oct 27 and running through Tues, Oct. 31, No Peeking Theatre presents MOTHER LEEDS: A Horror Story about a cruel Victorian mother and the 13th son she keeps locked away. The show takes place at the Jersey City Art School on McWilliams Place across from Hamilton Park. The cast features Kit Vogelsang, Genevieve Hoeler and Alex Shorey, and it was written and directed by the company’s executive director Amanda Levie of Jersey City. “Mother Leeds is a fictional horror story rooted in New Jersey legend,” Levie says on a break from rehearsals. “This is the first time I’m writing a show for my company. I wanted to do a horror story. No Peeking has not done that genre yet, so I’m really excited.”

Moran. “In a normal neighborhood, two twelve-year-old girls, best of friends, are going to sacrifice an innocent girl for a chance to meet a supernatural being, but the only thing in their way is their friendship. Inspired by a true event, Let’s Play Dead Girl is a cautionary tale about two best friends, Josephine (Yessenia Sabrina Rivas) and Juda (Yeena Sung), who create a website revolving around Alto (Tomas Bergland), a mystical being living in their imagination. Soon, their obsession with Alto runs wild as they hatch a plan to murder their friend, Consuelo, so they can make Alto come to life.”
