hat happens when two artists collide, meld, put their work up on the same gallery walls? That’s what artists Fermin Mendoza and Peter S. Bill are planning when their new show ORDER & CHAOS opens at 313 Gallery in Downtown Jersey City on Sept. 15. (The opening reception is Sunday, Sept. 17, 4 to 9 pm.) Mendoza and Bill have known each other several years, did some group shows together and became friends in the process. Although different in styles and mediums – Bill creates geometric images in a spectrum of colors; Mendoza creates mixedmedia paintings filled with symbols, people, animals – together their work creates a Zen, of sorts, and a sense of order and chaos, Mendoza says. “Order and Chaos is a term we use to describe the show,” Mendoza says, “but there is some common ground.” “Different strokes for different folks,” Bill says. Popular among Jersey City artists, Bill describes himself as a hard-edged geometric colorist.

Fermin Mendoza & Peter S. Bill have a new show opening at 313 Gallery in JC “That’s my ongoing theme,” Bill says. Sometimes he creates an image of neon light in his paintings. “Which I do every so often,” Bill says, “and then I go back and do something else.” Included in Mendoza’s work is series of paintings he did of a street cat called “Fict”. The series addresses identity, a sense of purpose and community, he says. “Its about losing your identity and seeing the world through the eyes Blue on Blue by Peter S. Fear Now Jersey City: JCTC Opens New Series with Gallery Group Show Jersey City Theater Center(JCTC) begins its 2017/2018 season with a theme everyone seems to be feeling more of these days: FEAR! JCTC presents three thematic series during its season. JCTC selects topics global in scope yet relevant to the community then explores that theme using visual arts, theater, dance, monologues, and other performances. For the first series of its new season, JCTC presents a topic relevant to individuals and communities and one that works on both internal and external levels. “Fear can paralyze you and keep you from fulfilling your dreams, or Fear can bring out the best in you,” said Olga Levina, Artistic
Director, JCTC. “The Fear series explores social, political, and personal fears. We all live with fear, but how do we prevent our personal fears from being exploited by those in power? The hope is that by going on this exploration and raising these questions, we can also discover how communities and individuals can contribute to the world so future generations can live with less fear and in a more peaceful and stable society.” Like all JCTC series, this dark voyage sets sail with the Fear Art Show and reception in
the gallery and black box theater at Merseles Studios, 339 Newark Avenue, Jersey City. The Fear Art Show will be accessible for all Fear events at Merseles Studios and open during the Jersey City Art & Studio Tour, October 14-16. The Fear Opening takes place September 15th, a free event ($5 suggested donation) and features the premier of the Fear Art Show – a group show of visual art based on the Fear theme – as well as artist reception and Artist Talk, followed by previews of upcoming Fear
previews. Fear features more than a dozen different theater, dance, performance and other events. All About Downtown Fair Happens Sat, Sept 16 Music, Food, Dance, Art – JCs Newark Ave to Get Lively
By Sally Deering Summer 2017 will be donning its flip-flops one last time on Sat, Sept. 16th when Newark Ave transforms into the All About Downtown Street Fair popping with hundreds of food and craft vendors, artists, bands and dance groups from 12 noon-to-8 pm that night.
This is the 7th year of the festival and Rachel Sieg, Executive Director of the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District (HDSID), which puts on the yearly hootenanny, promises a bigger and better than ever festival. Along with artists, food and drink vendors and performers, 11 food trucks will be selling special food treats with several beer gardens and four music stages set up with performances going on all day. An estimated 40,000 people are expected to attend. “We have a lot of exciting things happening this year,” Sieg says. “We have the South House beer garden on Newark Ave. They set it up to look like the inside of the restaurant. Left Bank Burger will have their own Reggae
party beer garden with a frozen margarita machine, palm trees and picnic tables. I also have the Zeppelin beer garden on Barrow Street. They’re going to have a dunk machine and big pretzels, too.”
Did she say dunk machine? That’s right. Grab your friends and get ‘em dunked! There will also be a special kids’ area with rides, games and face painting. “We want people to stay,” Sieg says. “We don’t want festivalgoers to buy a Sangria and leave. The idea is for them to sit, hang out, listen to some great music and get to know the area.” The All About Downtown Street Fair is the largest outdoor community event in Jersey City put on by the HDSID, a public-private partnership through which property owners & business owners have a direct impact on neighborhoods and their development. Of the 300 vendors, some are new like the French Toast Guy and a new cupcake vendor, Sieg says. Returnees include Vagabond Vintage
which sells its wares from a truck. There’s a truck selling vegetarian fare, too. And Frozen Desserts will be selling big slushy treats. “It’s a great event,” Sieg says. “It’s one that everyone loves to go to. You get to meet your neighbors and new people, too. We want people to buy from the vendors; I’m excited that people are going to see the new restaurants we have. The typical person that doesn’t live here is going to find out about these places. They might say ‘we’re going to go back to that restaurant’. That’s the whole point.” FREE RIDES, TOO!
Another highlight this year are the free shuttle bus rides to and from the festival by Jersey City Day Trippers bus service. There will be stops in Greenville, The
Heights, Newport – the buses will be picking up passengers from each Jersey City borough every 40 minutes – and they will bring people back to their original location, Sieg says. “It’s an All About Downtown street fair, but the idea is to bring everyone here,” Sieg says. “Its not about downtown, its about Jersey City.” LIVE BANDS ALL DAY
Susco says he books bands that are crowdattracting festival bands with high energy and who know how to interact with a crowd.
Sirelo and Chelo Mercado of Grassroots Community Space in JC will again lead the drum line to mark the end of the street fair
“That’s what we look for,” Susco says. “Local Bands that have a good amount of touring experience. Hey Anna Defending Champions just did a national tour. will be performing Music starts at noon and “Dancing” Tony runs all day long. Your Susco of Rock-it Docket ears will be delighted.” runs the music again this year. Bands like Defending Champions will be performing as well as Conundrum (a combo of hip hop/jazz & soul), Pat Van Dyke (high energy jazz), and Trusol (R&B a capella), DJ Kev_lov, Chilltown Collective and Hey Anna. “We’re presenting If you go a lot of local bands,” Sat, Sept. 16, Susco says. “That’s 12 noon-8 pm what we like to focus ALL ABOUT on. Its all about downDOWNTOWN town, so it would be Grove Street to Coles nice to have bands Street, that are all about Downtown JC downtown.” www.jcdowntown.org

MORE THAN A BRIDGE
Bayonne’s Bridge Arts Festival to Spotlight Art, Music, Community Three days of Arts Events throughout Bayonne begin Sept. 7th By Sally Deering
B
ayonne is more than just a bridge that connects to Staten Island, and the Bridge Arts Festival directors Cheryl and Christopher Mack want to prove that with three days of arts events highlighting the city’s artists and artisans. On Thursday & Friday,
Sept. 7 & 8, live music and poetry readings at several Bayonne locations are the kickstarter to the main event: Sat, Sept. 9th, the Bridge Arts Festival which starts at 11 am at the Dennis P. Collins Park adjacent to the Bayonne Bridge. (Go to www.bridgeartsfestival.com for complete event listings.) “The reason we’re holding this in Dennis P. Collins Park is that we want people inside and outside to know that Bayonne is not just a bridge,” Cheryl Mack says. “It’s a hot bed for the creative community. The Night I Saw Hugh Jackman (From the Very Last Row)
Most people avoid sitting in the back row. But for one theatergoer, the back row proved how talented Broadway stars really are. By Nathaniel Rogers Using binoculars for live theater is cheating. For me, anyway. It’s one of my rules—my seat is my seat. I don’t want to cheat myself of that unique point of view. Close-up shots are great, but they’re built for film, not theater. Stage actors adjust their facial expressions and body language to the performance space. If the audience is 200 feet away, then every gesture, every movement, has to reach 201 feet. Why should I undercut the actor’s hard work with binoculars? But as I made my way up and up—not there yet, keep climbing—to my seat for Hugh Jackman’s Broadway debut in “The Boy From Oz” in October, 2003 . . . cheating suddenly seemed like a very
Hugh Jackman in “The Boy From Oz.” | By Photo by Lindsay Moller. Source: The Daily Telegraph good idea. There it was. Not just the back row of the Imperial Theater’s rear mezzanine, but the seat right against the far-left wall. Seat #1417 in a space with a capacity of, you guessed it, 1,417. I could comfortably lean my head against the wall—or skip right to banging it (which I may or may not have done). And when all six feet, two inches of Hugh Jackman entered the stage to sing the
opening number “The Lives of Me” I practically groaned at how itty-bitty he looked. Where’s a telescope when you need it? But it didn’t take long for my despair to vanish. When “The Boy From Oz” (the exuberant jukebox musical about Australian singer/ songwriter Peter Allen) opened on Broadway, the world knew Jackman primarily from what would become his signature film role as
Page 18-September 1-September 15, 2017 River View Observer
“Wolverine” in the X-Men franchise. He played the gravel-voiced, hard-edged superhero nine times, ending his remarkable run just this year with the elegiac “Logan”. Despite his brilliance as that character, I’ve always wished I could have watched him singing and dancing just as often. For me, on that fall night, sitting in that far-away seat, he proved himself truly super-heroic. By the third number, the boisterous “Love Crazy,” Jackman’s Peter Allen was already giant-sized. By the show-stopping Act 1 climax “Not the Boy Next Door”, I swore the movie star was singing and high-kicking just for me—forget the other 1,416 ticket holders. By the closing spectacle of “I Go To Rio,” I was in a state of bliss. Fourteen years later, I don’t remember much about the show itself. The stunning lighting by Donald Holder and fun, flamboyant costumes by William Ivey Long both stayed in my mind, but, with all respect to these insanely talented men, I can only think of them as a perfect backdrop to Jackman’s
performance. He shone so bright for me that everything else ran the risk of gilding the lily. It was Jackman’s star wattage that filled up that cavernous space. Though I never wait by the stage door after shows, this time I made an exception. Now just inches away from me, Hugh Jackman somehow didn’t look any bigger than he had onstage. Against the laws of nature, he turned what could have been a terrible seat into a VIP ticket. Only a superhuman talent could have reached with such force to that back corner high in the rafters. No binoculars needed. The above article written by Nathaniel Rogers first appeared on August 9th, 2017 on Show-score website and appears here by special permission from Show-score.
