Artists & Professors present FUTURE REBOOT at Hudson County Community College Show Inspired by New STEM (Science-Tech-Engineering-Math) Building By Sally Deering Electrical wires, LEDs, geometric shapes and motors are just part of the science-inspired art attracting gallery-goers at the new FUTURE REBOOT show at the Benjamin Dineen and Dennis Hull Art Gallery at Hudson County Community College (HCCC). The show, which runs through Oct. 3 features the work of six artists including three HCCC professors who have drawn inspiration from the college’s newly-built STEM (Science-TechnologyEngineering-Math) building which officially opens Mon, Sept. 18.

Digital Being by Taezoo Park FUTURE REBOOT on view in the 6th floor art gallery housed in HCCC’s fairly-new library building features artists Yaloo, Meng Chih Chiang, Taezoo Park, Professors Mark Ramos, Nooshin Rostami, and Jeremiah Teipen, who created art

works from a myriad of concepts, processes and mediums. The show’s opening reception is Tues, Sept. 26 from 5:30-7:30 pm, and on Tues, Oct. 3, the last day, the artists will lead a discussion with attendees on the role science, technology, engineering and math play in their art practices. Associate Professor and Coordinator of Computer Arts Jeremiah Teipen curated the show. “We’ve put together a great show of amazing work from very impressive artists,” Professor Teipen says. “The show is meant to coordinate with the opening of the STEM building at HCCC and that is why we reference those subjects in ‘the statement’.” According to Teipen and the other exhibiting artists, creating art in today’s fast-paced technology-driven culture is

information we gain through the media that changes us.” There are several interactive pieces in the show like Meng Chih Chiang’s piece “A Stranger to Words” an interactive network graph about language, and Teipen’s piece “Touchface” where a virtual space becomes physical. He also includes a section where 3D renderings of hands touch other hands. “Touch is such an important element of media,” Teipen says. A Space that is No Place by Nooshin Rostami “The idea of the piece was that I was thinking about a line as a metaphor for a boarder,” Professor Rostami says. “As someone who has been in exile for eight years, that line ‘spoke to me’. It’s a complex piece. As simple as it looks, it has a lot of different levels.” Professor Mark H. Ramos teaches Digital Video at HCCC. His piece Solstice features custom-written software, laser-cut acrylic, and stepper motors. “Solstice uses livestreaming solar data collected by NASA satellites to control the direction, speed, brightness, and rotation of a live updated image of the Sun,” Professor Ramos says. In this way, the piece is linked to and constantly changes based on the current state of the sun. As technology changes, it continues to have a complex impact on the world-at-large. Meanwhile, artists will continue to try to make sense of it all, and in FUTURE REBOOT, these six artists created work that explores technology’s affects on contemporary culture. “’Solstice’ aims to re-construct and recontextualize sunlight in an attempt to explore humanity’s contemporary and post-modern relationship to the natural world,” Professor Ramos says, “as our
