STARS WILL SHINE IN JERSEY CITY GOLDEN DOOR FILM FESTIVAL PREMIERS By River View Observer Staff Every year, Jersey City is flooded with filmmakers, actors, entertainment industry leaders, celebrities and film aficionados who have been looking forward to the Golden Door International Film Festival (GDIFF) all year. And this year, they won’t be disappointed! \ This year, Annasophia Robb, Famke Janssen, Alysia Reiner, Ed Asner, Matthew Asner, Eric Roberts, Armand Assante, Federico Castelluccio, William Forsythe, Sean Young, Stephen Baldwin and Judd Hirsch

are expected to attend when the festival takes place Thurs, Sept. 24 through Sun, Sept. 27. The opening and closing nights will be held at the Landmark Loew’s Theater with film screenings during the festival’s four days in venues throughout Jersey City. GDIFF received 50% more submissions from more than 20 countries, with 21 films centered on autism, as well as several LGBTQ and Latino films. “We are screening 155 films, with feature films and short films spanning

“When I had the dream to start this film festival, I never imagined it would grow so big so quickly. This year we will be screening the most local films to date,” - Bill Sorvino several genres, as well as documentaries,” says Bill Sorvino, Founder and President of GDIFF. “When I had the dream to start this film festival, I never imagined it would grow so big so quickly. This year we will be screening the most local films to date,” Golden Door International Film Festival, now in its 5th year, is continuing its “Autism Awareness and Acceptance” efforts. It is not only hosting a special live musical event by the actors from “Autism: The Musical”, but TV legend Ed Asner will be speaking at the Autism Awareness event. Asner, winner of seven Emmy Awards, with another 13 nominations, is also the former president

of Screen Actors Guild (SAG). Part of GDIFF’s philosophy is to treat all filmmakers as equals, screening films from both upcoming and veteran filmmakers. In line with this philosophy, it will once again give out the “NJ Filmmakers of Tomorrow Award” in conjunction with the Fort Lee Film Commission for excellence in filmmaking by Hudson County High School filmmakers. Sponsors of this year’s festival include Vintage Rockefeller Spirits, CarePoint Health, the Norman and Bettina Roberts Foundation, NJ City University (NJCU) and Friends of the Loew’s.

estled among the brownstones on Sussex Street in downtown Jersey City, with tables out front for al fresco dining under burgundy umbrellas, John’s Pizzeria welcomes pizzalovers to enjoy the art of thin-crust pizza baked by fiery coals in 800-degree brick ovens. John’s Pizzeria owner Lisa Castellotti grew up learning the pizza business at her father’s pizzeria on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. Then, Castellotti’s mother opened John’s Pizzeria on 44th Street in Manhattan. After her mother passed away, Lisa Castellotti inherited the Times Square business,

Lisa Castellotti, owner of John’s Pizzeria with her daughter Meagan Free then opened John’s Pizzeria in Jersey City and John’s Pizzeria in the Bronx. “I love pizza” Castellotti says, on a break from her dizzying schedule. “It’s one of my favorite foods.” What makes John’s Pizzeria still so popular after all these years? “The signature coal

oven and thin crust,” Castellotti says. “A lot of businesses opening now are using wood ovens, but I prefer coal. The wood gives the crust an oak flavor while the coal gives it that charred taste. I also think cheese is extremely important.” John’s Pizzeria may be all about pizza but there are other dishes on the menu,

too, including Appetizers, Salads, Sandwiches, Paninis and Pastas. Appetizers feature Bruschetta, Fried Calamari, Chicken Wings and Fried Ravioli ($6-$11). Salads include Spinach, Caesar, and Arugula served with shaved parmesan cheese in a light lemon dressing ($9.50-$10.75). A sampling of entrees are the Chicken Marsala

Shrimp Francese, and Eggplant Rollatini, which is breaded eggplant stuffed with ricotta cheese, topped with marinara sauce and fresh mozzarella served with pasta marinara or roasted vegetables ($12$14). Pasta dishes include Penne Arrabiata, penne pasta served in a spicy marinara sauce; Linguine Cont’d on page 15

Pizzas come in Personal, Small and Large sizes, and a sampling includes the Bacon and Vodka Sauce Pizza; the Breakfast Pizza made with mozzarella and cheddar cheeses topped with bacon and eggs; the Shrimp Fra Diavolo Pizza made with fresh shrimp and mozzarella cheese layered with homemade arrabiata (spicy marinara) sauce; and the Buffalo Chicken Pizza with mozzarella cheese topped with grilled chicken tossed in buffalo sauce and fresh bleu cheese ($7-$21). John’s even serves a glutenfree pizza. ($9.25). “We also do daily specials,” Castellotti says. “Our Jersey City location is more of a neighborhood place so people like a variety.” Castellotti’s children Meagan and Joseph Free are

also involved in the John’s Pizzeria empire. Meagan, 21, who will be graduating NYU this year has been working summers in the family business since she was 15. Joseph, 20, attends Staten Island Community College and also helps out. “I tell my kids make sure when you pick what you want to do, you enjoy it,” Castellotti says. “Going to work every day and not liking your job is terrible. For me, I still love the business.” Castellotti’s three pizzerias keep her running from one location to the other overseeing daily operations and a staff of 200 employees. “I’m not an absentee owner,” Castellotti says. “I’m always

around. I try to do two places a day, although sometimes it doesn’t always work out. They’re not close in proximity. I will drive to Jersey City, park and then jump on the train and head to Manhattan.” And sometimes, you might find her in the kitchen cooking with the chefs. Being on-site is a big part of her business philosophy along with giving exemplary customer service, no matter what location. “Some of my customers have my cellphone number,” Castellotti says, “I had a customer here yesterday who had a few parties here in the past. He called me because he wanted to pre order his lunch. I want the people who come to my restaurants to always feel welcome, like they walked into my home.”

NEWARK MUSEUM, 49 Washington St, Newark, NJ. (973) 596-6550; www. newarkmuseum.org. Now showing: CHROMATIC: Minimalism and Color Field Experiments. “This exhibition presents highlights from the Newark Museum’s collection of late modern abstraction, bringing together works by major figures and innovators experimenting with color and light, including Mark Rothko, Josef Albers, Donald Judd, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Alma Thomas and others. Minimalism and Color Field painting emerged in the 1950s and flourished throughout the 1960s and 70s. Favoring simplified geometric shapes and machine-made materials, such as steel, plastic, and fluorescent light, these artists created works that feature sleek, streamlined surfaces and bold inventive approaches to color.”
