ike the paint he applies to his canvases, artist Tim Daly spreads himself pretty thin. A landscape artist who works in Realism, Daly splits his time between painting landscapes in his Hoboken studio at the Newmann Leather Building, and as a scenic artist painting backdrops that theater-goers see night-after-night on the Broadway stage. In October, Daly’s paintings will be on view in two Jersey City shows. On Fri, Oct. 5, ANCIEN RÉGIME: THE PREREVOLUTIONARY WORLD opening at the Village West Gallery on Newark Avenue will feature one of Daly’s works. On Sat, Oct. 6, PERSISTENCE OF HISTORY opens at NJCU’s Visual Arts Gallery on Culver Avenue, and will feature three of Daly’s paintings. Curated by Peter Delman, the exhibition explores unacknowledged aspects of history as a key subject in contemporary art. Along with Tim Daly, other featured artists include Lewis Colburn, Christy Georg, Nina Katchadourian, Joyce Kozloff, Stacy Renee Morrison, Michael Oatman, Debra Priestly, Jaune Quick-to-See-

Smith, Joshua Reiman, Roger Shimomura, and Gaku Tsutaja. Three of Daly’s paintings will be in the Persistence of History show at NJCU: The First Afternoon of Our Longest War, Alpine Lake Fracking, and Global Hawk Crash, Eastern Maryland. His painting, Police Activity in Venice Beach will be in the Village West Gallery show. Daly creates his works with pastels, charcoal and acrylics on canvas and muslin, and he prefers painting landscapes, he says. His process includes taking photographs of the landscape he wants to paint, and visiting the site several time as he works on the painting. He then paints in layers. “I guess you could call it glazing to a degree,” Daly says. “I build up layers of color.” He takes a lot of pictures, but photographs have limitations, he

He says he admires several painters including “Police Activity in Venice Beach” by Tim Daly will Velasquez, Degas, and be on view at Village West Gallery on Newark Ave Whistler. He describes their works as “miracles in paint”. “I’m a realist painter,” Daly says, “and I respect other realist painters.” If you go Opens Fri, Oct. 5 ANCIEN RÉGIME: THE PREREVOLUTIONARY WORLD “The First Afternoon of the Longest War” by Village West Gallery Tim DalyWill be on view at NJCUs Visual Arts Gallery 331 Newark Ave, JC www.villagewestgallery. com.

leaving circles in the Afghanistan sky; a painting of California wildfires; and fracking at Alpine Lake. “Global warming has crept up on us,” Daly says. “What the sky says is important. Fracking is world-wide. It’s ubiquitous. And the ultimate consequence, global

Artist Cheryl Sylivant’s Solo Show on View at Hamilton Square 19 Paintings Fill Lobby Walls till Jan 2019 by Sally Deering
Solo shows give artists the chance to take center stage. Curator Kristin DeAngelis, who has her own gallery in the Jersey City Heights, and curates for the Hamilton Square Condominium Association in Downtown Jersey City, was impressed by local artist Cheryl Sylivant’s paintings and decided to give her a solo show in the Hamiltion Square lobby. ART AND LIVING ENERGY: METAPHORS OF BEING PAINTINGS is a collection of 19 paintings by Cheryl Sylivant that opened last week at Hamilton Square to great reviews, DeAngelis says. The paintings are a retrospective from 2002 and her travels to Brazil, Morocco and Italy – up
to the present. DeAngelis says Sylivant’s paintings speak of the places she’s visited on her travels.
Cheryl Sylivant & Kristin DeAngelis “When we talked, Cheryl was telling me all the places she traveled to and how she travels,” DeAngelis says, “where she’d gone and how she interpreted the energy. The colors (in her paintings) are eye-catching and when you find out more about them, you’re engaged by the work.” “I call it open energy painting,” Sylivant says. “It’s between Abstract Art and Abstract

ALL IN THE FAMILY Mile Square Theatre Pulls Out the Stops in Christopher Durang Comedy
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (One Funny Family) On Stage thru Oct. 7 By Sally Deering Hoboken’s Mile Square Theatre wants to put a smile on everyone’s face—and who could blame them? We all could use a bellylaugh right about now! So, Artistic Director Chris O’Connor turned to one of the funniest playwrights in contemporary theater, Tony Award winner Christopher Durang and pulled a rabbit out of his hat with this gem of a comedy, MSTs new production Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play. One big reason: it has nonstop laughs – and some belly ones, too -- and a cast that’s as much family as the characters they portray. Offstage, Chris O’Connor (Vanya) and Annie McAdams (Masha) are husband and wife; onstage they play sister and brother. Barbara Pitts (Sonia) plays their sister onstage, and in real life, she’s their sister-inlaw. Andrea Bellamore (Cassandra) Annette Hammond (Nina) and Jonah Robinson (Spike) round out the cast. Mark Cirnigliaro directs. onstage, and in real life, she’s their sister-in-law.
Andrea Bellamore (Cassandra) Annette Hammond (Nina) and Jonah Robinson (Spike) round out the cast. Mark Cirnigliaro directs. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike centers on the relationships between a brother (Vanya) and his two sisters (Sonia and Masha), one of whom is adopted. Vanya and Sonia have been living in their parents’ Bucks County house for many years; they took care of their parents when they were still alive. Their sister Masha, a big movie star with an ego to match, drops in on Vanya and Sonia for a surprise visit with her young lover Spike. Masha invites them all to a costume party where Vanya and Sonia discover Masha tried to sell the house out from under them. “I think this play really connects to people in mid-life,” O’Connor says, “where they are in their life, and how they value their siblings. When we were deciding to cast it, everyone said I should play Vanya. I’m the perfect age, and I am an actor. We decided to cast my wife Annie as Masha and our sister-inlaw Barbara Pitts, who is an accomplished New York actor, we wanted her to play Sonia. When we went into rehearsals, we had this chemistry

Annie’s super funny – from the brother and Barbara’s moment they take the husband John passed stage to final curtain, away in April, so this it’s a roller-coaster ride has been incredibly therapeutic and wonder- of laughter. It’s about family, and how famful for us to work on ily drives us crazy, but something together.” we love each other Director Mark Cirnigliaro has directed anyway.” As Artistic Director, several productions at Chris O’Connor says MST including It’s a he likes to have a wellWonderful Life, The rounded season.
