I’m using all kinds of colors, red, aqua, white, with a lot of prints. Most of my cover-ups are made of 100 percent silk.” Celebrity hairstylist Eric Alt, who owns three salons in Wood Ridge, Saddle River and Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey and is in charge of the teams of hairstylists for New Jersey Fashion Week is also hosting a Carnivale Celebrity Fashion Show featuring two-time Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir and other celebs. “We decided to do a carnival-themed fashion show to help raise money for the Susan G. to several runway shows, complementary cocktails and free samples. But the real stars of the show are the fashions and many of the designers are showing original pieces that are custom made, and run from $100 for a shirt to $7,000 for a gown. Kids wear for 3-10 year olds by Goo Roo Mini, will also be modeled on the runway. Supplying tunes for the shows is DJ Matty of Paradise DJs in Glen Rock. “Fashion changes,” Tilary says. “Designer fashions are now in places like H&M and Target. There’s a mass market that wants to buy fashion and appreciates fashion, so why can’t they see a fashion show? I’d rather do this show than spend a hundred-thousand dollars on New York Fashion Week.” Tilary is still accepting applications from designers who want to participate in New Jersey Fashion Week. And although it’s not a competition like TVs “Project Runway” who knows, the next hot designer may be right here in New Jersey. All you gotta do is “Make it work!”

J CITY Theater presents the NJ Premier of: RACE, by David Mamet

October 7th through 22nd-8:00 pm Tix: $20.00 • Tickets can be purchased through www.jcity.org or calling 800-838-3006 , At 252 Ninth Street, Jersey City, NJ 07303 On October 7, 2011, J CITY Theater will open their 6th Season with RACE, by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright David Mamet at The Underground Theater at St. Michael’s in downtown Jersey CIty. Performances begin at 8pm. Audiences are encouraged to reserve tickets due to limited seating and a limited run. The show is scheduled to close October 22nd. This is the NJ Premier of this script. RACE, last year’s Broadway hit, is a legal drama / detective story that follows three lawyers who find themselves defending a rich, white businessman accused of a crime against a young African-American woman. Issues of class, shame, sex, gender, guilt and of course race are all

Page 16 River View Observer

provocatively stirred together in classic “Mamet” style. As one of America’s leading playwrights, Mamet is doing what he does best: choosing an incendiary topic and then asking more questions than he answers. Race has the quick banter of Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross, the gloves-off approach of his Speed The Plow and provocative subject matter of Oleanna. As the playwright wrote in a recent essay about his work, “Race, like sex, is a subject on which it is near impossible to tell the truth.” But ‘truth’ is exactly what the court system demands, which makes a perfect conflict for great theater. Audiences are sure to be debating the issues addressed in Race - long after the curtain has fallen.

“Sizzles with Energy” - The Wall Street Journal “High Voltage Melodrama” - Bloomberg News “Scalpel-Edged Intelligence” - The New York Times “When we learned that David Mamet had agreed to let our company be the NJ Premier of RACE, we were at first over the moon with excitement then scared to death” says J CITY Executive Producer Clay Cockrell. “I think this opportunity is a real testament to the grow and quality of our company. In the end - it’s the same with every script we approach: Tell the story and tell it well.” Sandy Cockrell, Artistic Director said, “When we started J CITY Theater, our goal was to present cutting edge scripts that would challenge us and our audiences. RACE asks more questions than it answers and for me as a director and an actress, that’s very attractive.” J CITY Theater is excited to have many Jersey City residents in the cast. Ron Nummi of Liberty Harbor will be playing Charles Strickland, Dianna Lauren Jones of downtown Jersey City will be playing Susan and Sandy Cockrell will be playing Jack Lawson. Rounding out the cast of four is Brian Richardson from NewYork as Henry Brown. J CITY Theater continues their collaboration with Gallery 9 - transforming their lobby into an exhibition space for local artists. Curated by Hernando Rico Sanchez, the goal of Gallery 9 is to create a show that reflects and speaks to the play being produced. For RACE, Mr. Sanchez has selected to feature a single artist: Noa Griffel whose work will be displayed in the gallery and on the set. There will be an opening reception with the Artist and Curator on Saturday October 15th, 2pm to 4pm. J CITY Theater is happy to continue their offerings of Dinner and A Show Packages with local restaurants. As in the past, the famed Embankment Restaurant is offering their $30.00 Prix Fixe menu on performance nights and the ever popular Hamilton Inn is offering 10% off the entire bill for J CITY audience members! J CITY Theater (www.jcity.org) is a not-for-profit professional theater company based in Jersey City, New Jersey. Having formed 6 years ago, they now are in residence at St. Michael’s Church on Hamilton Park in downtown Jersey City, just a few blocks from the Holland Tunnel. J CITY Theater continues to garner positive reviews from The New York Times and Star Ledger for the quality of their productions. Recent productions include STATE OF THE UNION by Crouse and Lindsay, last spring’s hit comedy PRIVATE EYES by Steven Dietz, and Peter Nichols’ PASSION. They are also known for their annual holiday show: A TUNA CHRISTMAS and their engaging one act plays (Compression of a Casualty and The Spot) during Hudson County Theater Alliance’s annual One Acts Festival. J CITY Theater’s mission is to create quality, high energy theater that is told with sophisticated simplicity.

STARGAZINE

ARIES (March 21 - April 19) Travel and the higher mind are all highlighted with the transiting Uranus in the 9th house. We’re not talking “Jerry Springer” like events but more spiritual transformation and visits to the world’s sacred grounds like Lourdes, Sedona, and my favorite, Roswell. No need to worry if you can’t physically travel you can reach these places without jet lag with your psyche or in your dreams; a touch of the mystical is yours.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) Your tenacity is one of your most valued characteristics unless you continue to stubbornly remain aboard a sinking ship. Look at your choices and cease to put in good energy after bad. Life has just given you a reprieve. The Universe, although kind, is uninterested on how you learn your lessons. Adjust your attitude so you don’t continue to have the hard knocks of the past. The choice is yours, choose well. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) The 11th house governing friends, hopes, and wishes finds you changing course and following your deepest desires. You now accept the possibility that you can become the person of your childhood yearnings, a princess or prince living the life you had imagined so many years ago. Go forth with confidence but please dream big!! CANCER (June 21 - July 22) The best advice for the Cancer native is to not take life so seriously. It seems that the problems of our mundane existence have been given more importance in your life of late. There is a Russian proverb that states when all the work is done and everything is finished you can die. Life will have problems to resolve and it is an ongoing journey.Live, love, and laugh.

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 22) Mars in Leo at the ascendant indicate a renewal of spirit and focus and the physical energy to complete projects. Dynamic and positive changes abound and like a force of nature you clear away debris and rebuild your life. Great transformational personal power is now yours. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept.22) The part of fortune indicates a relationship you thought was lost has returned and amends have been made. You now feel a part of a family and the hurtful past is now a distant memory. Hold back your natural tendency to critize because if a rift in this newly formed bond returns the connection will be lost forever. Thank the stars that you have been given another chance at friendship and love. LIBRA (Sept. 22 - Oct. 22) Once a year each sign begins a new phase in their lives. At the time of our birthdays the Sun returns to the exact degree and sign of our natal charts. This is the time of your solar return. A wave of planetary energy suggests that with the proper mindset this could very well be the best year of your life. Saturn will provide discipline and by maintaining a Venus and Jupiter thought pattern you will be dramatically surprised of your success. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 21) One symbol of the Scorpio native is the Phoenix. This month rise above any negativity. Soar higher with your goals and sublimate your other archetype the Scorpion. Don’t allow anger and revenge to sully this absolute perfect energy that will propel you towards your highest achievements.

Month of October 2011

by J. Banta Lewis

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) A zero degree Moon as we enter October cautions that emotional issues cannot be harnessed. The 5th house governing romantic relationships and children may find your stress level high. It will help to know that this energy is temporary and you return to your jovial and optimistic self before the end of the month.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 - Jan. 19) Changes are brewing around the work front. Like observing a wave in the distance and seeing it’s slow and at first, its imperceptible growth, you sense uneasiness. These pending upsets are unnerving, to say the least. A struggle for stability ensues and the Capricorn native asks for and receives what is needed Success is yours! Enjoy. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb 18) Neptune retrograde on the cusp between the 7th and 8th house indicates that you may have been unaware of some important facts about partners and/or inheritance This could simply be an misunderstanding of an at work insurance policy or as serious as a spouse who cut you out of their will. You are an Aquarian, don’t forget, so you will handle these issues with integrity and move on.

The Internationally Famous Duprees Are Coming To Bayonne High School On October 29th at 7:00pm!

The Bayonne Education Foundation is proud to present the Duprees live in concert on October 29th, 2011, 7:00PM, at the Bayonne High School Alexander X. O’Connor Auditorium. Tickets are available through the BEF Duprees hotline at 201-858-0477 or by visiting the BEF website at bayonneeducationfoundation.org and clicking on events. The Duprees are known the world over for their romantic interpretations of the most beautiful love songs ever written. They have made a career out of giving new life to old hits. Starting out in the early sixties, in Jersey City, New Jersey, The Duprees were discovered by George Paxton of Coed Records and former big band leader. Impressed with their smooth vocal quality, he had them record Jo Stafford’s 1950’s ballad “You Belong To Me” with Big Band arrangements. It was an instant national hit and the group’s first Million Seller. The unmistakable sound was born and

the hits kept coming: 1962 You Belong To Me · 1962 My Own True Love · 1963 Gone With The Wind · 1963 Take Me As I Am · 1963 Why Don’t You Believe Me · 1963 Have You Heard · 1963 Love Eyes · 1963 It’s No Sin · 1963 The Sand And The Sea · 1964 It Isn’t Fair · 1966 Let Them Talk · 1966 Exodus. Do not miss this opportunity to see one of the most beloved musical groups of all time and support the Bayonne Education Foundation which helps to meet the educational needs of the Bayonne School District. PISCES (Feb. 19 - March 20) You are charming, bright, and mediumistic, this month you use your skills of enchantment to capture the job, love, or positive life situation that you desire. One word of caution, don’t allow negative people from the past to return and finish the job of upsetting your life. Your ruler, Neptune, at times clouds your vision and you always think the best of everyone even if they have hurt you in the past. Never again!! © STARGAZINE 2011

Try the Brightside Tavern in Jersey City for Food, Drink, Fun

By Sally Deering

When Tom Parisi opened a little Gelato shop on York Street in Jersey City more than a year ago, he named it “Tommy Two Scoops” and the name stuck like a maraschino cherry on an ice cream sundae. An entrepreneur at heart, Tommy Two Scoops is his best salesman (he spent more than 20 years selling carpet), talking with neighbors outside his shop, kissing babies and petting puppies that venture into his “dog friendly” shop, which also serves sandwiches, wraps and other light delights. Less than two months ago, Tommy Two Scoops – who is also known to burst into song with a fine imitation of Louis Armstrong, added a new restaurant to his repertoire, the Brightside Tavern located on the corner of Bright and Monmouth Streets (across from the Jersey City Medical Center and adjacent to the Pathmark on Grand Street). And just like he did with his Gelato shop on York Street, Tommy Two Scoops has enhanced the Bright Street neighborhood with a new and exciting bistro that serves delicious food. “If you build it, they will come,” Tommy Two Scoops says. “Opening Tommy Two Scoops on York Street gave me great practice and I met a beautiful cross-section of people from the neighborhood. It’s nice to be in a place where people are happy.” continued on page 23

restaurant VIEWS The Brightside Tavern has everything needed to make people happy. Tearing down the old, dilapidated saloon that stood before, Tommy Two Scoops and his contractors built a beautiful restaurant that houses an elegant dining room, a bar that resembles the one on the TV show “Cheers” and a classy upstairs banquet room perfect for corporate functions, baby showers and engagement parties. And with his entertaining personality, Tommy Two Scoops plans to add a Baby Grand to the atmosphere for live entertainment and maybe even some Karaoke nights, where guests can go up on stage and sing their favorites – something near and dear to Tommy Two Scoops, who once sang on stage at the Apollo theatre in Harlem. The Brightside Tavern’s menu features American Nouveau cuisine and there are lots of choices. On a recent visit, I tried the Hummus and Baba Ganoush appetizer served with pita, celery and carrot sticks ($9) which was delish, and the Fish and Chips entrée with the fish light and flaky and the breading light and crunchy. The steak fries had a crunchy outer texture you rarely get at other restaurants. Absolutely yummy!

For a new dining experience that offers great food in a beautiful atmosphere, check out the Brightside Tavern in Jersey City, where Tommy Two Scoops, the robust and people-friendly owner welcomes you with open arms and “everybody knows your name.” The Brightside Tavern 141 Bright Street Jersey City, NJ 201-435-1234 www.brightsidetavern.com Email: Team@brightsidetavern.com Lunch, Dinner and Weekend Brunch Lunch: Mon-Fri, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Dinner: Sun-Wed, 4 p.m.-10 p.m.; Thurs-Sat, 4 p.m.-11 p.m. (Bar menu ‘til Midnight) Weekend Brunch: Sat, Sun, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

SILVERMAN, DEVELOPERS OF JERSEY CITY CONDOMINIUM HAMILTON SQUARE, ANNOUNCES REFINANCING DEAL BY THE PROVIDENT BANK FOR $12 MILLION Deal Demonstrates Commitment to Jersey City and Surrounding Communities New York, NY – September XX, 2011 – The Provident Bank and SILVERMAN, a real estate development company, today announced a $12 million refinancing deal for Hamilton Square, a premium condominium development in Jersey City. Hamilton Square (www.livingonthepark.com), a residential development which is now more than 50% sold, was initially financed by Eurohypo, an international bank for commercial real estate and public finance that played an integral role in providing the financial support for the development’s construction. The original $50 million loan backed by Eurohypo was refinanced by The Provident Bank for the remaining amount of $12 million to complete the sales process. The deal was structured by Gregory Haines, vice president of commercial real estate at The Provident Bank. continued on page 31

“We are extremely pleased to announce the closing of this transaction. As a bank working with SILVERMAN for a number of years, we understood the business needs of this project and recognized its potential to become a thriving residential and retail property,” said Gregory Haines. “Hamilton Square will be a positive addition to the community by bringing in hundreds of new residents and more than a dozen new and diverse retailers. We are proud to partner with a team that is equally dedicated to development in New Jersey.” Through its 11-county branch network and online banking services, The Provident Bank (www.ProvidentNJ.com) offers a full suite of financial products with quick, local decision making. The bank constantly seeks new ways to provide its commercial customers with the products and services they need in an increasingly complex environment. “The Provident Bank has a long-standing history in New Jersey, and a solid relationship with SILVERMAN. This refinancing demonstrates confidence in the continued growth of Jersey City and the success of Hamilton Square,” said Paul Silverman, principal of SILVERMAN. “We appreciate the commitment of Provident to our development efforts. We enjoy working with the bank and we look forward to working together as we continue to sell the condominiums at Hamilton Square.” The foremost developer of mixed use neighborhood buildings, historic landmarks and creative retail destinations, SILVERMAN’s commercial and residential development projects have significantly contributed to Jersey City’s revitalization for the last three decades. Located at 232 Pavonia Avenue in the historic Hamilton Park neighborhood, Hamilton Square features a total of 124 residences in a mix of studio lofts and one, two and three-bedroom homes designed with custom kitchens and spa-like bathrooms, advanced soundproof construction and high ceilings. The remaining units on the market range in size from approximately 630 to 1,840 square feet and in price from $359,000 to $899,000.
