Mayor Jimmy Davis and the Bayonne City Council announced that they will present the third annual Paddle the Peninsula, a kayak event, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at DiDomenico-16th Street Park, on Saturday, September 26, 2020. Mayor Davis said, “Paddle the Peninsula will be a great experience for all participants. We look forward to this fun event, which will enable our residents to enjoy recreation in Newark Bay. Come and have a great time on the water with your family, friends, and neighbors.” For safety reasons, kayakers must be at least 18 years of age. For more novice participants, kayaks will enter Newark Bay from the boat launch at the foot of DiDomenico-16th Street Park. This year, more experienced kayakers will enter the water at Rutkowski Park and will paddle down to 16th Street. Rutkowski Park is located in the northwestern

corner of Bayonne, just north of Stephen R. Gregg-Bayonne County Park. All participants should still call to register and to obtain further details. Participants may either bring their own kayaks or sign up to use ones provided at the event. The barbecue and other on-shore activities that were part of last year’s event will not take place this year, due to the Coronavirus. The boat launch is located on Newark Bay, west of Avenue A, and below the end of West 16th Street. Registration for the event is required, so that the right number of kayaks and other supplies can be ordered. To register, please call Jackie in the Bayonne Public Works Department at 201-858-6131. Mayor Davis concluded, “Paddle the Peninsula is just one of the many great activities that the City of Bayonne has to offer. We hope you will register and join us on Saturday, September 26.”

PREP COACH HANSEN ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM COACHING

By Jim Hague When the 2020 high school football season ends in December, it will mark the end of a historic era at St. Peter’s Prep. That’s because longtime Prep head coach Rich Hansen announced his retirement from coaching, effective at the end of the season. Hansen, who also doubles as the school’s athletic director, will maintain his administrative duties, but will step away from the sidelines. Hansen has been the head coach for the last 33 seasons and has elevated the Marauders to the in credible status of national prominence and perennial state championship contender. The 60-year-old Hansen, whose team won the NJSIAA

Non-Public Group 4 state championship last December and were expected to be the favorites to repeat as state champions in a non-pandemic world this season, said that the timing was right to announce his intentions now before the season starts October 2. “The athletic director’s job has become more demanding,” said Hansen, who is also the president of the North Jersey Super Football Conference, the largest league in the state that encompasses almost 150 football teams, as well as serving on a handful of different committees with the NJSIAA. “I’ve been putting in 14-hour days between coaching and administration and

that’s just not healthy. I don’t want that to show in my performance in either position. Rather than doing it this way, I’ll make the announcement now when everyone is aware of what’s going on. It will give us time to plan and move on.” Hansen has led the Marauders to 278 victories over his storied career. Only the legendary Vince Ascolese won more games (363) in his four decades of coaching at Hoboken and North Bergen. Hansen has also been calling the shots for five state championship teams in easily the toughest section in New Jersey. Hansen said that the “condensed” season, as

he called it, was the perfect time to step away and give someone else the opportunity to take over the program in 2021 with a full season. Hansen said that there were some emotional losses that he had to endure over the last year, including the death of his mother Gail, and the recent passing of close childhood friend, college teammate and former Hoboken High School head coach Lou Taglieri, that played a role in his decision to step down after the current season.

“I’ve lost a lot of people in the past year,” Hansen said. “The losses brought a sense of mortality into the situation. I’d rather leave one year too early as opposed to too late. I’ve spent 38 years overall at Prep and 33 years as head coach. I have to admit I’m a little bit tired and spent. I’ll be honest that it was taking a toll on me. Now I can concentrate on having just one job and not have to worry about doing all the things I’ve

been doing.” Cont’d on page 11

HANSEN RETIRES By Jim Hague Cont’d from page 10 As the Marauders began official practices Sept. 14, Hansen said that he likes the makeup of this year’s Marauder squad, which features returning starting All-State quarterback Tahjamell Bullock, who has already declared his intentions to attend Virginia Tech next fall. Making the decision official now takes away all the mystery and intrigue about Hansen’s future. “If this wasn’t a pandemic year, I still would have stepped down,” Hansen said. “I’ve been tossing it (the decision) around for a while now. I’m doing it now because I didn’t want to have all the questions to answer every week. It takes all the guess work

away. I think the decision would have been the same. I just think the timing would have been a little different.” The Marauders begin the 2020 season on Friday night, Oct. 2, playing at West Orange. The Marauders play their first home game on Saturday, Oct. 10, against Don Bosco Prep at Caven Point Cochrane Stadium at 1 p.m. The Marauders’ final game of the season will be played on Thanksgiving morning at Seton Hall Prep with kickoff for the final game of Hansen’s coaching career slated for a 10:30 a.m. kickoff. It will mark the first time St. Peter’s will play on Thanksgiving Day since their Marauders’ traditional rivalry contest against Dickinson was ended in 1983.

Set large plants on wheeled caddies or a collection of pots on a wheeled tray to move them out of the way when cleaning or hosting a gathering. Then wheel them back in place once your company has left. Adding some convenience for easy care will allow you to spend less time keeping your plants looking their best and more time enjoying the individual beauty each plant provides as you grow them in style.
