on the cover . RO: When did you discover your love for opera? PS: My mother was a piano teacher and there was always music in the house. I had two uncles, Uncle Carlo and Uncle Vincent who were great singers from Naples, a baritone and tenor. I always had the idea I wanted to be on the stage. I didn’t know the difference between an actor and a singer I was attuned to beautiful voices. If it’s the sound of the voice you’re looking for it’s not going to be rock and roll it will be opera. Today, we’re not in a good time for opera singers. Domingo is the most admirable and he’s done so much, a great musician. I like Angela Gheorghiu. She’s my favorite singer right now.

RO: We know you for your roles in films, TV and Broadway, but were you ever in an opera? PS: I performed at a gala at the

Met and it was very exciting to be on that stage. I made my debut and my audition. I was having vocal problems because of acid reflux. It stops a lot of opera singers in their tracks. RO: Your fans remember you as a great cook in “Goodfellas,” can you talk about your line of tomato sauces? PS: Neapolitans have made marinara for hundreds of years. I just put it in the jar. People don’t know how to make it. They usually put onions and garlic in and by doing that they make it bland. Garlic takes away the sweetness when mixed with onions and they cancel each other out. Marinara is strictly garlic, oil, tomato, basil and a touch of oregano. RO: What are you working on now, film-wise? PS: I just finished a movie. I’m acting, I have projects

RO: In real life, you’re more a Renaissance Man; isn’t that somewhat different from the characters you portray? PS: People who see “Goodfellas” presume that’s what I am (but) my family is noble, goes back hundreds of years. I’m not a gangster. I’m a poet, a best-selling author, director and sculptor. I’m interested in everything. RO: What made you start the Paul Sorvino Asthma Foundation and didn’t you also write the book “How to become a Former Asthmatic?” PS: I started the foundation

asthma. A lot of performers and athletes do charitable work. Being a performer or an athlete if you’re that kind of person, your heart goes out easily. Look at Magic Johnson and all he’s done. I’m just doing my thing – ridding the world of asthma. RO: Your repertoire has been portraying tough guys; but aren’t you more a family man in real life? PS: I’m different from most other actors who kind of live their lives for themselves. They may have been great artists at the expense of their children, not in support of their children. For me, my career came second and my children come first. Paul Sorvino in concert at the Loew’s Jersey City promises to be a great evening of music and storytelling. It will also offer Sorvino’s fans a unique opportunity to see a different side of one of their favorite actors, his nephew Bill Sorvino says. “My uncle’s act includes stories and jokes – in between songs he’ll tell stories of what happened on a film,” Bill Sorvino says. “He’s a great performer and an amazing storyteller. People who see him in concert will get to know him beyond movie and theater roles. And once you do, you get hooked. He comes across so well in his roles, and that underlying personality is what people connect to in his acting. When you hear him sing, tell stories and jokes, you realize he’s an amazing person.”

Shakespeare Festival and Show Come to Bayonne on Sunday, September 18

The Actors Shakespeare Company of New Jersey City University announced that the company will present a series of Shakespeare plays and events in Bayonne, beginning Sunday, September 18. On September 18, the Actors Shakespeare Company will offer a two-part event on the lower level of DiDomenico-16th Street Park. The first event will be a festival, beginning at 12:00 noon. Shakespeare actors in the park will present sword-fighting demonstrations, Renaissance music and dancing, sonnets, Shakespearean insults, and more. Following this festival, there will be a one-hour smorgasbord of Shakespearean masterpieces, all woven around the idea that all the world is, indeed, a stage and ‘all the men and women merely players’ in this drama we call life. “All the World’s a Stage” will kick off at 3:00 p.m. with an hour of fun filled activities for the whole family. Admission is free. The Actors Shakespeare Company of New Jersey City University is offering ‘Bayonne’s Bard in the Park’ project as a gift to Bayonne, setting the stage for Shakespeare’s works and those of other notable playwrights at future shows. All are welcome to bring their own chairs and blankets, while being entertained by this very talented troupe, which boasts New Jersey City University as its home. The Actors Shakespeare Company at NJCU is a professional, ensemble theatre in residence at New Jersey City University. The NJCU Foundation – Actors Shakespeare Company is a qualified 501(c) (3) organization. Contributions to it are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. For information concerning your becoming a sponsor or donor, please call Colette Rice, NJCU Foundation, at 201-200-3260. hen you enter Angelina’s restaurant on Broadway in Bayonne, you’re greeted by an explosion of kitsch – a display of 45s and old photographs on the walls and music by 50’s and ‘60s groups like The Shirelles crooning from the speakers in a dining room that’s more like a salon with pink walls and red and white table settings. The place seats 35 lucky guests and if you’re one of those lucky ones, you’re in for a real treat and a dinner that will make you think your Italian mom is back in the kitchen cooking your favorites just for you. Angelina Borrello is the owner and chef of Angelina’s and her son Jon Paul Schaffer is head mixologist and the two work together to give Angelina’s that unique mix of great food and fabulous drinks. On a recent visit, Jon Paul created three of his specialties, the Cherry Bomb, the Dreamcicle and a Mojito that were tasty, “zizzy” and absolutely “da bomb!” Jon Paul’s an artist when it comes to designing new drinks and each libation is a masterpiece of flavors. That’s an understatement. Angelina does more than just cook. She creates! She has passion! She takes chicken and crab and shrimp and steak and cooks dishes to order with a Zen-like approach: Keep it simple and let the flavors stand out. She uses only fresh ingredients and nothing is left over and rehashed. And, it’s all cooked to order. “My regulars don’t even look at the menu, they just tell me what they want and I go in the kitchen and cook it for them,” Angelina says. And her regulars come from as far away as Australia, Thailand and Ireland and

served Parmagiana, Milanese, Francese or Piccata; and a Seafood Combo of Lobster, Dungeness Crabs, Scallops, Shrimp, Clams and Mussels over a Bed of Linguini that serves four. Served at every table is a basket of Italian bread – Angelina’s been serving Italian bread from Paramount Bakery for 37 years – and it’s crusty on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect for mopping up the light sauces and gravies Angelina creates from her tiny kitchen. She has desserts and coffee for after dinner and there’s really no particular closing time. As Jon Paul says, “We close when the food runs out or when Angelina doesn’t want to cook anymore.” Indeed, Angelina’s restaurant is as unique as Angelina. She works alone in the kitchen, no Sous chef, no dishwasher, just Angelina doOwner and Chef Angelina Borrello and her son Jon Paul Schaffer ing what she loves to do – cook. Not one for outside Angelina’s Restaurant the spotlight, Angelina prefers making her dishes the stars of the show. On a recent Internet search, one happy customer, “Billy C” wrote this review of Angelina’s on Yelp.com: “Hidden Gem! Reasonable Prices! Awesome Chicken Parmagiana, best I’ve tasted. Pork Tenderloin was juicy, moist and delicious. Escarole with garlic was spectacular. Angelina made baked clams even though it wasn’t on the menu. Best and freshest ingredients. Pasta is al dente. Angelina cooks by herself so don’t be in a hurry. Perfection takes time.” Warm and welcoming, both Angelina and Jon Paul offer their guests a fantastic dining experience – great food, charming atmosphere and a graciousness you don’t find in a lot of restaurants these days.

If you haven’t tried Angelina’s, don’t hesitate. Grab your honey or your BFFs and head over to Angelina’s for a fabulous dining experience. It may be Bayonne’s best kept secret, but trust me, with delicious food like this, it won’t be for long.
