he Kinks, a legendary rock band from the 1960s and 1970s, could not have envisioned Jersey City when they sang “everybody’s in show biz,” but they might as well have. In its ninth year, the Golden Door International Film Festival (GDIFF) will screen nearly 200 films at various venues around Jersey City over a four-day period from Sept. 19 to 22. While many people know about film festivals such as the Sundance Film Festival, traditionally held in January, and Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Film Festival in April, GDIFF is held each year in the fall. These four days will be packed with independent films from veteran and emerging filmmakers. Like most film festivals, Golden Door will showcase feature-length movies and film shorts that lack major distribution and thus aren’t likely to be shown in mall cinemas. But what these films lack in distribution and exposure, they make up in content, exploring visual techniques and themes major films won’t. See page 7

Mile Square Theatre presents Dominique Morisseau’s searing drama Pipeline. A mother’s hopes for her son clash with an educational system rigged against him. With profound compassion and lyricism, Pipeline brings an urgent conversation powerfully to the fore. Issues of class, race, parenting, and education in America come to the surface as we are left to question the structures that ultimately trap underserved communities. Pipeline stars Malikha Mallette (Daredevil, House of Cards), Marcus Denard Johnson, (Titan Theatre Company), Chadwick Antonio
Rawlings (MST’s 7th Inning Stretch), Jarvis Tomdio (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Jessica Darrow (Bitter Greens at 59E59 Theaters), and Annie McAdams (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at MST). Golden Door Film Festival kicks off on Sept. 19
Cont’d from cover
Started in 2011, GDIFF has brought to Jersey City quality films from local as well as international talent, part of a vision of the festival’s founders, actor Bill Sorvino and wife Michele Sorvino. The festival borrows its name from the poem etched into the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty and also was inspired by Sorvino’s immigrant grandfather. Bill Sorvino said his grandfather came from Sicily, a classic hardworking immigrant seeking a better life in America. He said the poem on the Statue of Liberty — “I lift my lamp beside the Golden Door” — reflected how Jersey City became a gateway to the rest of the nation. Filmmakers from near and far flocked to enter the festival which has seen a growing reputation. Last year, Golden Door was named as one of the 50 best film festivals in the country by Movie Maker Magazine. Screenings over the four-day festival will be held at the Landmark Loews Jersey Theater, the historic Central Train Terminal in Liberty State Park, Jersey City Theater Center’s Merseles Studio, Andco on Montgomery Street and Nimbus Dance on Newark Avenue.
