FLEET TRANSPORT AWARDS 2015 - PRIMARY SPONSORS Rosslare Europort ‘Arguably The Best Located Seaport in Ireland’ In the current economic climate, exports and jobs are national economic priorities, and Rosslare Europort is a critical strategic asset in the national export and employment creation efforts. All the high added- value exports on which our economic recovery depends are exported as unitised freight and Rosslare Europort handles more unitised freight than any other Irish seaport except Dublin. In fact in 2012 Rosslare handled more unitised freight than the Ports of Cork, Shannon-Foynes and Waterford combined. Rosslare Europort’s location at the south eastern corner of the island makes it the best-located port in Ireland. With the shortest sea-crossings from the State to both Great Britain and the Continental mainland, excellent connections into the national roads network, its proximity to the large population centres and main markets in Ireland, and its rail connection, Rosslare is in a pivotal position to be the island’s primary sustainable gateway to Europe. Rosslare offers four round-trip services a day to and from Britain and six round-trip services a week to and from the Continental mainland. All services carry both passenger and freight.

Range T continues to gain awards for Renault Trucks *Voted Fleet Transport Irish Truck of the Year 2015

R

enault Trucks’ Revolutionary Range T heavy-duty series has gained another major award – being named Irish Truck of the Year 2015 at the annual Fleet Transport Awards in association with RSA Insurance.

From the shortlist of three trucks in the Long Haul/National Distribution category the Renault Range T topped the ballot papers of the six expert jury panel consisting of commercial vehicle journalists, technicians and professional drivers. The new DAF CF Series ran its French rival close with only two points to spare, with the Iveco EcoStralis a further eight points behind. In the Regional Distribution class, it was an even closer race to the title with three of the six candidates fi nishing up with the same number of points. By sheer coincidence the DAF LF, Iveco Eurocargo and Mercedes-Benz Atego were neck-in-neck after the fi rst vote with the Atego taking the award on the fi rst preference count back. On the Renault Trucks' flagship, the judges liked the ‘Space-age’ look at the new Range T and noted, “It was a big change from the norm.” They were equally impressed with the truck’s interior design especially with its spaciousness and driver comforts. The driveline on the T430 4x2 Comfort cab accessed in early September was praised for its smoothness, power and fuel efficiency. “Congratulations to Renault Trucks on creating a stand out and outstanding truck with the new Range T. The Irish Truck of the Year Award is another significant title for the French flagship, just over a week after the Range T was honoured with the prestigious International Truck of the Year Award 2015 at the IAA CV Show in Hannover, Germany,” said Jarlath Sweeney, Group Editor, Fleet Transport. For the Mercedes-Benz Atego, its nimbleness around the urban centres were appreciated, assisted by a superb drivetrain from the latest Euro 6 engine to the new PowerShift 3 automated transmission. visibility, excellent driving position and a multi-function steering wheel on the latest generation Atego makes the town and city driver’s day a lot easier according to the jury panel. Popular amongst food, fashion and household goods distributors, the Atego is said by Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicle Sales Manager in Ireland, Fergus Conheady to be a “fi rst class successor to the previous Atego and one likely to carve an even larger share of the highly competitive distribution segment. The new Atego is set to become an even more familiar sight on Irish roads following its recent Irish launch.” The Volvo FE and FUSO Canter and FUSO Canter Eco Hybrid were the other fi nalists in this category. Also on the night the new zero emission Nissan e-NV200 was awarded Green Commercial of the Year in the Electric category with the new Euro 6 FUSO Canter Eco Hybrid winning the Hybrid class. Renault’s innovative 1.6 litre ENERGY dCi Twin-Turbo diesel engine on the latest Trafic took the Irish Green Engine of the Year 2015 Award in association with ESB ecars.

Gabriel Warde is Ireland’s Best Truck Driver!

L

oughrea, County Galway native, Gabriel Warde has won the inaugural Fleet Transport ‘Ireland’s Best Truck Driver Award 2014’ in association with Enprova. The 36-year-old driver for Lynx Transport, Galway demonstrated his superb skill levels in the Grand Final held at Citywest Hotel, Dublin on 2 October. Gabriel manoeuvered the MercedesBenz-Actros and Hireco box semi-trailer around the challenging course set out by Mark Dodd at Advancedrive with great precision to take the national prize. 10 professional drivers were selected to go forward for the Grand Final and like Gabriel had also to undertake a walk around check on another Actros to find planted defects and also tie down a number of loaded pallets on a Hireco/SDC trailer, safely and securely, under the watchful eye of the Health & Safety Authority. The first two rounds of the competiton held in the weeks leading up to the finale, focused on eco-driving and a theory test. Vehicle and driver performance were monitored in real time using Daimler FleetBoard Telematics System. The presentation of the Vincent Sweeney Memorial Trophy and a family weekend away at the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris was made to Gabriel leading into the annual Fleet Transport Awards Gala Dinner at Citywest Hotel, which was attended by 820 representatives from the transport

O’Toole Transport Ltd: Investment in all areas for growth

2

014 will go down in the annals of the O’Toole family history as the year the Moycullen, County Galway based transport company opened its new central distribution hub in Dublin - and culminated in winning two Fleet Transport Awards.

At the Fleet Transport Awards 2015 Gala Dinner at the Citywest Hotel, Dublin, Laurence O’Toole, Managing Director at O’Toole Transport proudly accepted the prize for International Haulier of the Year 2015 in recognition for the company’s progress in the complex seafood distribution business, but the climax came later in the evening when the 820 strong audience applauded the announcement that O’Toole Transport had won the overall title, Irish Haulier of the Year 2015. The judging panel took into consideration the efficient method that O’Toole Transport manages to combine its national distribution business with the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) sector and its growing business with some of the biggest food producers across Europe. From humble beginning in 1996, the company has grown substantially. O’Toole’s now employs in excess of 70 people and operates a fleet of 50 vehicles and 75 trailers. Outside of its Galway headquarters, two hubs have been established in Waterford and at Dublin Port. Back in 2000, the Directors of the company made a courageous yet strategic decision to focus on providing a premium logistics service to the growing FMCG sector and the food industry in general in Ireland. A significant element of this objective was achieving BRC Global Standard Certification for cross-docking and distribution of chilled, frozen and ambient foodstuffs. This move has proven to be successful and the backbone of the progress in recent years. However, the most significant decision was to invest in a new export distribution centre in Dublin Port. Opened last January, the new facility is custom designed to meet O’Toole’s business requirements and its customer needs. “Before we moved into this new facility, we consolidated all our export loads in Galway and then shipped them via Dublin Port. We can now transact all loads in Dublin from all over Ireland

which has significantly reduced road mileage, fuel costs and driver times,” explained Laurence O’Toole. “Another significant cost saving is that we now consolidate import loads in Dublin and have the ability to store products or consolidate loads for customers that were collected from all over Europe. This has resulted in import customers getting one delivery rather than multiple deliveries,” he added. “Fortunately for our firm, the economic climate in 2013 and 2014 had very little impact on the level of business. As noted earlier, all our business is within the food sector which has not suffered as much as other industries. We have noticed a significant uplift in deliveries to discount retailers.” On its business overseas, Laurence is also pleased on this advancement, “Our international seafood business has shown considerable growth in 2014 which has allowed us to expand services to France and the rest of Europe. We expect this trend to continue into next year.” When we became part of an international logistics group, Seafoodways, it means that we can now offer premium logistics services to our Irish seafood exporters that will maintain shelf life and ensure their product can be delivered to the main European markets within three days of collection.” Looking to the future, Laurence outlined some details of the company’s five year plan which is constantly under review as the business evolves. Among the key objectives include increasing the value of the firm, to increase its market share both nationally and internationally, to install customer real time tracking data across its entire fleet and to further reduce empty running. In addition fleet upgrades will be ongoing. Traditionally, O’Toole’s run Scania and Volvo trucks but recently added the new Renault Range T to its fleet, just announced as both International Truck of the Year and Irish Truck of the Year 2015. Further expansion is also planned with additional depots in Munster and Ulster with proportional increase in staff numbers. “Over the past two years we have worked extremely hard to ensure that the company is adequately resourced and to put in place financial controls to manage profitability and costs. We firmly believe that we now have a business model that is robust, profitable and well resourced,” said Laurence. “However, the critical issue to achieving our plans was ensuring we had the right people in the right jobs - that we are trained and resourced to do that job. Our business is a family business but we recognise that it is impossible to manage all key activities within the family and therefore in 2013 and 2014 we made some tough decisions. We have now employed individuals from outside with experience in a number of different fields to manage key areas of the business. This will be key to achieving our future plans,” he concluded.

Fleet Transport Energy Futures Forum 2014

Daniel Fitzpatrick, Bord Gáis Networks

with the resource available from the Corrib Gas fields in North Mayo, supply will be there for decades to come.” Dan mentioned the huge potential from Biogas produced from organic residue with up to 4,000 jobs in the offi ng. He cited that market certainty is required through infrastructure support and that key stakeholders need to get involved. Excise relief was also called for relating to Biogas versus Natural Gas. The fact that Ireland needs to meet EU RES-T targets by 2020 is also an issue, otherwise daily fi nes of up to €25,000 will have to be paid. Martin Flach, Product Director at Iveco Ltd outlined the history and progress the Italian brand has made in developing Compressed Natural Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) powered vans, buses and trucks. He mentioned that tens of thousands of these alternatively powered units were on the roads across Europe mostly from major fleet operators. “We can now look to Ireland to get the ball rolling with Natural Gas as a viable alternative,” he said.

lternative sources of fuel such as Natural Gas together with eco-friendly electric or hybrid powered commercial vehicles were explored in depth at the inaugural Fleet Transport Energy Futures Forum held at Citywest Hotel, Dublin on Thursday, 2 October. The well-attended event which represented a broad spectrum from the road transport and commercial vehicle industry heard from leading experts such as Bord Gáis, Iveco, Nissan, FUSO Trucks and from an operational point of view, Celtic Linen. From the open discussion that followed, questions were directed to John O’Mahony, T.D. the Government representative present and the Chairman of the Oireachtas Transport & Energy Committee who noted the issues that needed addressing including a realignment of the road tax for low emission or zero emission vehicles, the payload differential and the need to increase incentives for transport operators investing in this technology. Moderated by Jarlath Sweeney, Group Editor, Fleet Transport, the Transport Energy Futures Forum began with a presentation from Dan Fitzpatrick, Strategic Planning Manager, Bord Gáis who stated that Natural Gas as a fuel source presents a great opportunity for transport operators as CNG - Compressed Natural Gas costs less than diesel and delivers a lower CO 2 footprint and with less engine noise. “It is a proven technology,” he said, and FLEETAWARDS | Winter 2014

Peter Scallan, Celtic Linen

James Mitchell, Director, Global Business Development & Corporate Sales, Nissan Motor Company sang the praises of electric power as a ‘game changer’ in transport and said that the success of the Nissan LEAF zero emission car will transcend on to the new e-NV200 light commercial, just launched on the Irish market. He spoke about the growing charging infrastructure across Europe and that the investment in improving the technology is paying off . On the merits of the e-NV200 (which was available for test drives during the day) James stated it offers a stress-free, silent and impressive driving experience. “There are three methods of charging including a fast-charge system,” he said, and added that maintenance costs are less than conventional diesel powered vans. With 109hp and 254Nm of torque, a payload of 770 kg and 4.2 cu.m of load space, the e-NV200 has a lot to offer in a very eco-friendly manner,” he added. Peter Scallan, Director, Celtic Linen which operates CNG, Electric and Hybrid powered commercial vehicles in its large fleet presented an interesting insight on the company’s dayto-day running of an Iveco Eurocargo Natural Power, a Smith Electric Newton and a FUSO Canter Eco-Hybrid. In highlighting the pros and cons of all three with the Iveco Natural Gas coming out on top, Mr. Scallan covered the importance of good back-up from the brand’s agents which was sadly lacking in the case of the Smith Newton which is based on the Avia D-Line, mainly due to the importer’s closure. Teething problems with the FUSO’s transmission was dealt with efficiently and to Celtic’s satisfaction. “CNG technology works and the fact that it cannot be siphoned, is another advantage,” he said.

• Alternatives are here and now technology in Japan, its Portuguese factory produces the Eco-Hybrid version of the Canter, small to medium duty truck range. “To date over 2000 units of the Canter Eco-Hybrid are in operation, offering diverse transport companies fuel consumption reduction of up to 25% compared to the diesel version.” He admitted that maintenance costs are slightly higher but that the overall investment will pay off within four years.

Erk Rönnefarth - FUSO Trucks

Erk Rönnefarth, Head of FUSO Trucks Marketing & Product, began by stating that the Japanese brand is the leader in diesel electric technology having over 20 years’ development experience. While FUSO hosts the R&D centre for all of Daimler’s hybrid

Forum moderator, Jarlath Sweeney thanked the speakers and event sponsors, Bord Gáis Networks, Nissan and FUSO Trucks. In summarising the various contributors, he stated that these alternative sources of propulsion are here and now. “They may not suit every application but can be a viable proposition for some operators, especially working in and out of urban areas.”
