Eircode’s Postcode system is NOT fit for purpose

M

uch debate has been transmitted over the airwaves recently in relation to the Government’s implementation of the Eircode national postcode system. The prolonged system is flawed according to transport organisations and a number of blue chip express delivery service providers. The Freight Transport Association Ireland (FTAI) has stated that it has received complaints from a number of its members concerning the introduction of Eircode, the postcode system provided by Capita to be rolled out in 2015. More specifically, members have complained that Eircode appears optimised for the delivery of postal mail, but is not adequate for location or navigation purposes, or for the ‘smart’ economy. On 23 December 2013 the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources published a tender for a professional services provider to advise and support the Communications Minister, and specifically to ‘oversee the postcode and postcode address

database (PAD) design to ensure it is fit for purpose’. Neil McDonnell, General Manager of FTAI, said: “In view of the disquiet expressed by specialist delivery companies, FTAI believes the Minister should publish the outcome of this tender. If Eircode is to be Ireland’s national postcode, the general public should be reassured that it is fit for purpose as it is likely to be with us for at least fi ft y years.” The system was estimated to cost an estimated €26.5 million but its total cost could reach €100 according to Gary Delaney, Loc8. “Imagine a Postcode that is to be finally introduced in Ireland after 11 years of political wrangling - one that will cost the Irish economy over €100million - yet An Post has said it does not need it. The code is to be mainly random and therefore prone to error, is limited to “letterboxes”, and will not solve public safety issues and the needs of the emergency services. It will be optional and therefore may not enjoy popular

Trucksmith LoLoader is a superb High Volume Low Loader!

O

ver 20 years ago Devon based coachbuilders Trucksmith found a new and innovative way around the traditional drawbacks of Luton van bodies and has constantly worked on perfecting the concept. Issues of concern were poor aerodynamics, which led to higher fuel consumption, high floors making the loading of large or heavy items difficult without an expensive, payload impacting tail lift and poor handling due to the high centre of gravity. Recent evolutions of its so-called LoLoader high volume low floor box body is based on the latest Renault Master chassis/cab. Meeting European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (EWVTA) with flying colours, variants include 4.1 and 4.5 standard and high roof types. Th is version pictured, a demonstrator from Shaw Commercials, Castlebar offers a 1.4 tonne payload from the 3.5 tonne GVW Master model with the 2.3 litre dCi 125hp powertrain. “The Trucksmith LoLoader is ideal for furniture removal companies or those carrying high volume but light loads,” stated Mick Shaw, Shaw Commercials, Castlebar.

use, and has not been subjected to oversight and there is no guarantee that the global leaders in Navigation devices will support it as they are already supporting other cheaper, more robust and more flexible next generation solutions! What would you say if that code called itself, “The Location Codes for Irish Addresses” and yet it will contain no location information at all in its standard format?,” stressed Gary. “Eircode was heralded by then Minister Rabbitte as the most modern in the World when announced last October and when you hear Neil McDonnell, the General Manager of the FTAI, representing global logistics giants no less than UPS, DHL, FedEx and other major transport firms in Ireland, stating on radio that Eircode had many flaws and because the normal database to use it had no geolocation information, it will be completely unsuitable for FTAI members to operate efficiently,” added Gary.

UPC stays switched on to Ford Transit Custom

T

o provide its range of services to private and business customers nationwide, UPC, one of Ireland’s leading TV, phone and broadband service provider, has expanded its fleet of Ford Transit Custom models. UPC provides a full suite of cable TV, telephony and broadband services to both residential and business customers right across the country. The company’s team of Network Engineers who use the Transits in their everyday work, spend a lot of time on the road as they travel to and from customers’ homes and offices, ensuring the network and service quality is maintained at the highest levels. “With the evolution of our business over the last number of years, our fleet has moved from being predominantly based on the smaller Transit Connect to the larger Transit Custom. With the expanded range of product and services that we provide to households and businesses across Ireland, our Network Engineers need more space and functionality from their vans and the Transit Custom ticks all the boxes. In addition, our teams love the Transit for its great driving ability which is very important when you see the mileage that they clock up,” explained Eugene Latt in, UPC’s Head of Procurement & Fleet. Eugene added, “The Transit Custom’s practicality is a hugely important factor in our choosing the vehicle but equally, I have to look after the euros and the cents and the Transit scores very well here too as the vehicle has the lowest overall running costs of any vehicle in its class.”

Dawn of a new era for Fiat Doblo

J

ust like the Ducato, the Doblo, FIAT Professional’s small panel van is heading Stateside, but with a new face and other modifications. These changes will turn it into a more global vehicle. “The Doblo will have a more modular and flexible platform,” explained Giorgio Amet, Chief Engineer for the project at FIAT Professional. “Structural upgrades will be implemented, with modifications to several parts before it enters the North American market,” he added. “It will have a different chassis platform and of course a gasoline/ petrol engine – a 2.4 litre supplied from our partners in the US, Chrysler. “Items like Tyre Pressure Monitors (TPM) and an upgraded infotainment system will be installed also,” said Giorgio. New Doblo will sport a new face with differing grilles to distinguish the RA M brands for the US from FIAT Professional. Like the current version, Doblo will have a

750kg payload as standard, have a 5m3 cargo volume and accommodate two Euro pallets. New Doblo made its first appearance at the IAA European Commercial Vehicles Show in Hannover. Again it will be produced at the Topaş factory in Turkey, which has become a gold medal World Class Manufacturing facility. To date over one million Doblos have been sold since first introduced in 2000. Prior to the IAA CV Show, Fiat and Renault have signed an agreement under which Renault will supply FIAT Professional with a Light Commercial Vehicle based on a Renault platform. This is likely to be based on the new third generation Trafic just launched. The styling of the new mid-sized vehicle, possibly the successor to the Scudo will be developed

by Fiat and will feature unique and distinctive elements on the model, and branded FIAT Professional. The mock-up photo below is courtesy of Anlegg & Transport, Norway. The vehicle will be manufactured by Renault in France starting from the second quarter of 2016. By then the long standing agreement between Fiat and PSA Peugeot Citroën in producing the mid-sized van will have come to an end as PSA has set its stall with Toyota which has led to the production of the Proace as an interim until they co-produce an all new product. Another partnership has been formed with the collaboration between Mitsubishi in the co-development of an all-new 1-tonne Pick-Up truck that FIAT Professional intends to launch across global markets, also in 2016.

ive finalists, one winner. The most prestigious prize in the Light Commercial Vehicle industry, the International Van of the Year 2015 (IVOTY) goes to the all-new Iveco Daily. In what can only be described as the most competitive year ever since the awards programme was established in 1991, the new Iveco Daily topped both phases of the election process undertaken by the 23 member jury representing Western, Central & Eastern Europe and Russian markets. 2014 heralded the launch of twelve new light commercials, all in contention for the 2015 IVOTY trophy which meant that a shortlist of five had to be decided upon by the jury members after thorough assessment. From that list of five, the final election decided on the overall winner, the Iveco Daily, by a margin of 17 points over the new Mercedes-Benz Vito, with the Ford Transit third. The jointly designed and produced FIAT Professional Ducato and PSA Peugeot Boxer/Citroën Relay/Jumper and the Renault Trafic/Opel Vivaro filled the final places.

Since then previous generation models of the above shortlisted selection have all won the International Van of the Year Award with the Fiat Ducato/PSA Peugeot Boxer & Citroën Relay winning in 1994, the Iveco Daily (2000) and the Renault Trafic/GM Vivaro in 2002, with the Ford Transit and the Mercedes-Benz Vito victorious twice in 2001 & 2007 and 1997 & 2005 respectively. Commenting on the Iveco Daily winning the coveted title, Jarlath Sweeney, Chairman IVOTY said, “Congratulations to Iveco on designing and producing an excellent range with the new Daily family that includes panel vans and chassis cabs with a broad choice of powertrains from diesel, natural gas and electric. It is the second occasion that Iveco has won this award, the first of which was back in 2000, and on this occasion also is well deserved.” On receiving the IVOTY 2015 trophy at the IAA CV Show Gala Dinner in Hannover, Pierre Lahutte, Brand President Iveco said, “We are delighted that our New Daily has been awarded the prestigious Van of www.fleet.ie

One-to-One with Alan Bateson, Managing Director, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland with Jarlath Sweeney, Chairman IVOTY

F

leet sales to prominent companies such as An Post, Guinness and DHL Express has helped elevate Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to become a major player in the sector in Ireland. But the big deals are just one aspect of the success of the German brand as Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland (VCVI) has gone through radical change since 2009 with a reorganisation of its dealer network, introducing an attractive financial package and much focus centred on customer care. It was with the latter that VCVI received worldwide recognition on being awarded ‘Aftersales Global Importer of the Year 2014,’ at a special ceremony in Germany. Commenting on the achievement, Alan Bateson said, “All of the team at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and our Van Centre Network understand that the power of partnership is about reliability, keeping customers’ costs down and delivering on promises every time. We always guarantee every customer that we’re here for the long-term, with a commitment to support their business and help it succeed. We deliver on this promise through our aftersales service and our strategic goal is to not only be the best in Ireland, but also globally. With professional aftersales service and competitive offers such as 0% fi nance across the entire model range, it is clear to see how Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is supporting Irish businesses and is Ireland’s most loved commercial vehicle brand for over 60 years.” On meeting with Alan last month, he was naturally proud of the accolade, but certainly not resting on his laurels. Coming from a background as Head of Aftersales for both Volkswagen cars and commercials, Alan knew what was required to raise the bar in this direction which has become the backbone of the brand’s success in Ireland. However, he is keenly aware that to become “the most complete and professional LCV brand in Ireland,” a full programme of process has to be fully implemented with a deadline set for 2018. “These processes from a professional service include the model line up, options/packs available, customer solutions which includes conversions, equipment and accessories, service and warranty packs plus finance, leasing and insurance offerings,” said Alan. “Then we have the Emotional Process which has the working title of “Working with you, Working for you, Our customer.” Relating to the model line, which consists of Golf van, Caddy, Transporter, Crafter, Amarok and Transporter & Caddy Life, some due for replacement in the next two years or so, Alan emphasised, “We are a commercially oriented brand, not mixed with passenger cars.” There is very litt le commonality between the Volkswagen Group cars and vans with the exception of drivetrains. Alan outlined the many aspects of VCVI’s specific strategy which consists of product (new & used), price, and promotion as the main headings that also covers sales people, technicians, training, customer relations and most importantly aftersales. “We aim to increase customer satisfaction and loyalty through improved aftersales image, assured service quality and core processes” – and already within its 10 year growth strategy, VCVI has enjoyed 94.2% upturn in its aftermarket business. Two important elements that have led to this increase relate to customer satisfaction and a significant reduction in repeat visits to the dealership for repairs and maintenance. “The Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ 2018 strategy has changed our way of thinking,” explained Alan. “Pre 2013, we looked at the what, how and why direction to take in that we sell the best commercial vehicles and by offering quality, innovation and customer

FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Autumn 2014

solutions, we make profit, but this is not why we do it, this is a result of what we do. But post 2013 in everything we do, we believe in providing the best solution for our customers in two ways:- 1) By having trained professionals selling market leading innovative customer oriented solutions for their commercial vehicle needs; and 2) We make great commercial vehicles and provide brilliant customer service and support.” Alan then described areas that need further improvement, “that are currently good but need to move up to exceptional, which will take a litt le more time, but we are gett ing there.” “Some of these areas cover customer orientation with a broader range of conversions, more interaction on social media and looking to increase sales penetration in certain areas outside the mainstream van market such as the Transporter & Caddy Life ranges and California campervan models. On the subject of LCV conversions, approved partners have been established with Sortimo (racking systems), TBC (mobility conversions) and Ballinlough Refrigeration (Thermo King/Dhollandia). Interestingly, while major fleet sales have increased Volkswagen CV sales substantially in recent years, its 2,300 new registrations over 2014 are generated in the main from individual customers, which is pleasing to Alan and his dealer network, which has reduced from 36 to 24 dedicated van centres. “While we have less dealers than before, we have 42 service partners in all to ensure that the average drivetime for customers is no more than 21 minutes.” On the realigned van centres, various elements are required such as sales display area canopy, highly qualified technicians, replacement van programmes, extended opening hours and in some cases Saturday opening. Att ractive service packages (to include staged mileage options) and a new care programme for the RSA’s Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Testing are now in place. Business in VCVI’s aftersales is up substantially with €5.8m targeted for 2014. Brand Turnover in general is up 100% over budgeted estimates while its Finance Penetration is up 55% with over €10 million lent to Irish businesses in 2014. All extremely pleasing and rewarding for Alan and his team at Volkswagen Group HQ in Liffey Valley and nationwide dealer networks and they are now planning on lift ing their game again in 2015.

New Ford Transit’s Proving Good!

F

ord’s Proving Ground at Lommel is a hive of activity these days. Located in the heart of Belgian countryside an hour from Genk, test drivers are like busy bees hovering around the track’s various circuits. Normally up to 350400 vehicles would be on site here for extensive evaluation but with the launch of the new Focus, Mondeo and S-MAX due shortly, preproduction trials are ongoing. “Up to 700 vehicles are here now,” stated Valère Swinnen, Manager at Lommel, vans too, with the final phase of the Transit family set for introduction. With the additional vehicles on site, an extra 100 drivers were required compared to the normal 400 employed. “All Ford Europe products are validated here before entering country markets,” added Valère, who at one time was production manager at Ford Europe’s Commercial Vehicle division Needless to say that when he was asked by the Ford Europe Press team for the International Van of the Year to give the Transit (2 tonne plus) product derivatives the fi nal sign-off, Valère duly obliged. From the list below, a number of variants were driven around the vast Lommel circuit. • • • • • •

Transit L2 FWD Panel Van Transit FWD L3 Kombi Transit M2 Bus (18-seats) L5 Single Chassis-Cab AWD L2 Double Chassis Cab L4 Double Cab-in-Van

It was with the latter that we began. The Race Red extended LWB (L4) High Roof (H3) Rear Wheel Drive van with one glazed panel looked like an ordinary Crew Cab but when the doors were open, a

7-seat configuration was revealed in contrast to the normal 5-seater. Although the rear bench seat caters for 4 people, elbow-room is minimal. For front seat passengers, the two person bench is more spacious. Powering this ‘Double Cab-in-Van’ version as it’s called is the 2.2 litre boasting 155 PS mated to a 6 speed Duratorq TDCi manual gearbox. As with all the vehicles driven on the day, specification was high with switchable Auto Stop/Start and Ford Sat Nav with USB connectivity. On the safety side, numerous airbags, lane keeping alert with driver alert, adaptive cruise control with adjustable speed limiter, tyre pressure monitor, ESP with Hill Assist were fitted. Other aids included Ford SYNC with emergency assist, auto lighting, parking sensors and rear view camera. On the drive around the high speed oval shaped circuit and the twisty hilly sections, the FT 350 3.5 tonner performed well just like the previous occasion behind the wheel. The more compact FT 330 FWD L2 H2 that is Medium Wheelbase (MWB) with Medium Roof was taken next and joined the convoy. While we were somewhat restricted speed wise with up to 50% of payload on board, the new Ford Mondeo and Focus were flying around the track on the higher lanes at high speed. Th is time the 125 PS TDCi was the engine offered with a 400 kg test load on board and well secured. Specification and trend series trim levels were similar to the previous model driven. While it contained 50 kg more than the Double Cab van, the lesser power meant more gear changes around the twisty bits. For the utilities sector, the newly developed Single Chassis cab FT 350 Dropside will appeal especially with its extended LWB (L5). Th is Single Wheel RWD unit is almost 5 metres in length which means a long body can be fitted. The danger here is that overloading may happen, more than the single wheel configuration can take, especially with the extra pressure exerted on the brakes and on the suspension,

so the twin-wheel option would be the wiser choice here. Again the 2.2 litre 155 PS block is used and carried the 450 kg test load along nicely. Ford’s relationship with UK traction specialists County which developed the four wheel drive system for its tractors at one time and more recently with the Transit, continues. The latest Transit family now features the third generation which is far more efficient than before. Featuring single electric controlled units with high powered electric pump that is mated to the vehicle’s Electronic Stability Programme, traction is monitored at all times. It can tell when there is tyre slip and deliver more or less torque to axles on demand. A lock mode comes into play to offer continuous 4WD when encountering snow or loose gravel. County III is fitted to the standard RWD unit across all of the weight bands of the Transit 2-tonne and has a standard ride height. Around the rough forest route, the Double Chassis cab with Dropside body, powered by the 155 PS 2.2 litre was never under pressure or caught out on the tight corners. Last but not least was the M2 Bus (FT 460) which is the all new 18-seater built in Turkey on the Extended LWB (L4) High Roof (H3) platform. Unlike the 17-seater model offered, the centre sliding door is wider and qualifies as an emergency exit. Th is allows for the towing of a trailer as the back doors on the 18-seater does not need to be used for this purpose. Further flexibility is offered as the rearmost bench seat can be removed to open up large luggage space (for the now 14-seater). In driving this 4.6 tonne GVW unit, our average speed was reduced somewhat as the 85 kp/h speed limiter kicked-in which seemed to us as crawling compared to the circuit racers around us, even though we

had the 155 PS unit pushing us and were unloaded! As with the others, driver comfort was good and all round visibility excellent. On the eve of the main driving event, Barb Samardzich, Chief Operating Officer stated to us that she is very pleased with “the customer acceptance of the new Ford LCV family, that is the freshest in the marketplace. Year-to date (end of July) Ford Europe has sold 123,000 vans, that’s 12.5% up from the same period last year. Our overall market share at 10.7% is the best for us since 1997,” she said. Barb also mentioned that July with 11.6% market share was Ford’s best sales record in 19 years. On the various models within the Transit family, pre-launch demand for the 2 tonne range exceeded 11,000 units and sales of the IVOTY 14 winning Transit Connect have doubled for 2013, as have the IVOTY 13 winning Transit Custom (1-tonne). Interest in the new Transit Courier is exceptionally good too, according to Barb. "Ranger is gett ing stronger and stronger, achieving its best market share," she added. The American native mentioned that now that the new Transit range has ended its renewal cycle, the focus now is keeping these vehicles on the road consistently. Ford Europe is introducing Transit 24, a special aftermarket package which includes urgent repairs completed within 24 hours, a replacement vehicle and extended Dealer workshop opening times for the operator to ensure minimal downtime. “With 750 authorised dealers across Europe, Transit 24 will ensure that all Ford Transit vans will be kept on the road,” concluded Barb.

Nissan LCVs give Red Bull Racing F1 'Wiings'

R

unning a successful modern Formula One team is no simple task. Infiniti Red Bull Racing F1, the most successful team in the sport in recent years is a typical example, employing no fewer than 650 employees at its Milton Keynes headquarters. With more and more races being squeezed into the FIA Formula 1 race calendar - there are 19 rounds in 2014, with an extra race scheduled for next year - and increasingly a move away from the traditional European venues to far flung locations around the globe, the logistics involved in ensuring everything the team needs for a race weekend is in the right place at the right time are complex and demanding. That’s where Infiniti Red Bull Racing depends on its commercial vehicle partner Nissan. A relationship that commenced in 2011 when the Japanese manufacturer became the Grand Prix team’s logistics activities for Europe was expanded last year to cover all activities around the world. It consolidates Red Bull’s ties with the brand - not only does Nissan’s strategic partner Renault supply engines to the Red Formula One team, but its high end car brand Infi niti is the title partner and main sponsor as well as supplying cars for the team’s global needs.

FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Autumn 2014

Familiar to millions of Formula One fans as the public face of Infi niti Red Bull Racing F1, Team Principal Christian Horner noted the importance of the strong logistical tie-in with Nissan. “Our partnerships are extremely valuable to us and our partnership with Nissan and Nissan LCV is a vital one for us,” he said, speaking to IVOTY journalists at the conclusion of a tour of the Milton Keynes factory. “As you can see there’s an awful lot of activity going on, and our partners like Nissan LCV and its product are vital to us. We are constantly moving thousands of parts around the country and the world, and logistics is a key part to our success.” In total Nissan supplies eighty vehicles worldwide to the racing team, thirty of them in Europe. Operating around the Milton Keynes factory are seven 3-tonne Primastar panel vans, two NV400s, five 9-seater Primastar passenger vans and two custom built 13-seater Primastars as well as four Infiniti cars. Further afield NV350 vans are used in Asia, while in the US and Canada the team has access to full sized NV1500 and NV3500 vans. The latest additions to the Red Bull Racing Commercial Vehicle fleet though are perhaps the most interesting in light of the direction Formula One is taking. The high octane sport is steering a path towards a cleaner and

greener future, with a focus on fuel efficiency and energy recuperation. Fitt ing therefore that the racing team has just taken delivery of three e-NV200’s, Nissan’s new all-electric small panel van. Dany Boulenger, Division General Manager, Global Corporate Sales & Global Chief Marketing Manager, LCV Business Unit for Nissan Motor Company said that with the sport of Formula One focusing on energy recovery systems, there are similarities with what is happening in the transport sector. The Nissan e-NV200 comes with the same cargo space (4.2 cubic metres) and payload (770kg) as its diesel counterpart, but takes the electric motor that generates 80kW seen already in the Leaf passenger car giving a practical range of 106 miles (170 km). It gets a new battery pack compared to that in the Leaf, and has a higher capacity regenerative braking system. According to Yutaka Makita, Assistant Chief Vehicle Engineer, Nissan Technical Centre Europe, up to 40% energy can be recovered by regenerative cooperative braking and coasting during driving. The new cooperative regeneration brake system in the e-NV200 combines electric and thermal energy from regenerative and friction brakes respectively, with the Hydraulic Actuation System giving up to 14% range extended in real delivery driving patterns. Additionally the

GREEN SPORT | 11

driver can select one of four driving modes depending on traffic and road conditions, including a mode that improves the handling during coasting on a slippery road with the vehicle dynamics control managing the motor torque when the driver presses the brake pedal. Demand for the new e-NV200 has been positive - to the extent that the order book for the electric van is currently greater than the factory in Barcelona can produce. As regards future electric vehicles, it seems to be a case of wait and see for now. Clearly Nissan is testing the water with the e-NV200, with Dany Boulenger noting that if there is a clear market demand for additional electric powered vehicles, the technology is there

to meet it Back at the Milton Keynes factory, and looking after the new e-NV200s and the rest of the Nissan LCV fleet is Stuart Kendal, Transportation Manager for Infi niti Red Bull Racing F1. He’s the man with the responsibility for making sure all those Nissan vehicles and logistics plans are correctly deployed at all times. He believes the electric vans will be ideal for day-to-day operations around Milton Keynes, noting that a lot of suppliers are located within a ten mile radius of the factory. He added that his team will be carrying out a thorough review of the electric vans for criteria such as fuel savings and payload capabilities.

Ensuring all race freight and other parts get to the race tracks on time is a complex operation. European based races allow freight to be sent by road (using new Renault Range T trucks), but with 11 flyaway races in 2014, it becomes a more challenging task. An average of 35 tonnes of air freight is sent to each Grand Prix, but sea freight is also used. That takes a lot of early preparation though, Stuart explaining that sea freight for the first race in Australia which took place on 16 March had to leave by 2 January. Add in the invariable last minute deliveries that are typically transported as passenger luggage, and you can see why Stuart and his team of five full time drivers will be constantly on the move in their Nissan LCVs.

Inside the world of Infiniti Red Bull Racing F1

E

nter the Infi niti Red Bull Racing F1 headquarters in Milton Keynes, and the fi rst thing you see is a wall of trophies, testament to the success of the team that was only established in 2005 after it acquired the Jaguar Racing F1 team and premises. with intense levels of competition between Formula One teams, even the most minor of updates are closely guarded secrets. What you don’t see are loads of cars - in fact only about five chassis are produced each year. Development on the rest of the car though continues throughout the year, with teams

of designers and engineers attempting to improve every little detail. Impressively nearly everything is produced by the factory, only the Renault engines, gears and brakes are not manufactured by Red Bull. All so that two young men can go racing for a couple of hours every other weekend.

New Mercedes-Benz Vito rolls-off in Vitoria

L

ast month, the first unit of generation three Vito rolled off the production line at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vitoria, Spain. The new 2.5 t to 3.2 t GVW Vito is the first midsize van to feature three drive system variants: front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and allwheel drive. Almost 1.2 million Vitos were sold between the vehicle’s market launch in 1995 and the end of 2013. Around 3,500 employees manufacture the new Vito at the plant in Vitoria, and MercedesBenz Vans invested €190 million in the plant in Spain’s Basque region to prepare it for the model changeover. More than €8 million was spent in Vitoria to provide the employees with around 300,000 hours of training to prepare them for the new model series.

Vito models with rear or all-wheel drive systems are equipped with a four-cylinder engine with 2.15 litre displacement which is available in three output ratings: 100 kW (136 hp), 120 kW (163 hp), and 140 kW (190 hp). The Vito 119 BlueTEC is particularly important because it is the first van in its segment with a Euro 6 engine.

Vito is also unique in the model’s segment. The front-wheel drive variants are equipped with a compact, transverse-mounted four-cylinder engine with 1.6 litre displacement, supplied by Renault. This engine is available in two output ratings: 65 kW (88 hp) and 84 kW (114 hp).

Frank Klein, Head of Production, Mercedes-Benz Vans, said at the vehicle’s production launch in the Vitoria plant: “Our new MercedesBenz Vito is setting the bar higher for mid-size vans. The new Vito is the benchmark in its segment for safety, efficiency, and quality. We are now attacking in our traditional markets with new entry-level variants. Moreover, we are conquering new markets and also putting the new Vito on the road in the Americas. The Vito is our second global vehicle after the Sprinter.”

IAA Commercial Vehicles Show 2014 Iveco Daily takes all the Limelight

B

oreal Metallic Blue, the launch colour of the new Daily adorned the walls of the Iveco stand. But that’s not all as the third generation of the Italian brand actively promoted the winner of the coveted International Van of the Year 2015 and also took the covers off the Vision, a concept Commercial Vehicle based on the new Daily. “Iveco Vision, a concept centred on low environmental impact mobility, is embodied in a Commercial Vehicle featuring a range of innovative solutions. The concept emerged in the wake of Iveco’s Dual Energy technology, the chassis unveiled at the 2012 edition of the IAA Hannover show, bringing together potential technologies for use in the light commercial vehicle of the future. Ample glazed surfaces and the “see-through” front pillars guarantee unrestricted outside visibility from the cabin – while rear camera sight is displayed on a panoramic screen on top of the windshield,” explained

Pierre Lahutte, Iveco Brand President (pictured below). With over 80% of the components redesigned for the new Daily, the tried and trusted ladder frame chassis structure is still part of its DNA while technical innovation surrounds the platform. New Euro 6 engines, an 8-speed Hi-Matic gearbox and the introduction of Quad Leaf suspension has elevated the new Daily to a higher level together with the developments of Natural Gas (Power), Electric Minibus and all-wheel-drive versions. Claudio Zanframundo, Managing Director of Iveco in the UK & Ireland, commented to Fleet Transport on the achievement: “New Daily has enjoyed a fantastic response from the market ever since its international unveiling in June. We knew new Daily was something special, and this award is independent recognition of its achievements, at the highest possible level.”

Nissan VIP Concept will leave onlookers Green with e-NV!

Behind the spectacular two-tone exterior lies a sophisticated and luxurious interior. The seats are covered in premium quality white leather with blue accents, which contrast with the predominantly black lower portion of the cabin - the trim and carpets are black with a piano black finish on the control surfaces. The top half of the cabin, including the headlining, window surrounds and pillar covers are also white to create a spacious feel. The two ‘Club Class’ rear seats come with integrated seat belts, armrests and extending leg rests. By positioning the rear seats well behind the sliding door not only is access to the passenger compartment made as easy as possible, it also extends legroom up to 670 mm and could accommodate the tallest of passengers in

The rear passengers are entertained with the help of a 21.5-inch DSP monitor, which can display movies or other images from a passenger’s digital device, such as a smart phone, tablet, or computer. The central console between the rear seats incorporates controls for the monitor and room lights as well as housing a drinks fridge. A large LED roof lamp spreads diff used light through the rear compartment, while each seat has an individual reading lamp. The e-NV200 VIP Concept is equipped with Nissan’s Smart Rear-View mirror. This innovation enables clear rearward visibility under all conditions. The Smart Rear-View mirror is housed within the structure of the conventional rear view mirror, with a built-in LCD monitor that can be activated in place of the conventional mirror. A high-resolution camera, mounted on the rear of the vehicle, provides the driver with a clear unobstructed view of the rear, giving

the ability to check blind spots and other traffic conditions. The e-NV200 VIP Concept is powered by the same 80kW AC synchronous electric motor and advanced 48-module lithium-ion battery as developed for Nissan LEAF and e-NV200. “The e-NV200 Evalia is already an unprecedentedly quiet and comfortable vehicle, and this concept takes zero emission downtown transportation further, to a new level of serenity. The e-NV200 concept for VIPs is guaranteed to generate interest from luxury VIP operators,” said Dany Boulenger, Nissan’s Global Corporate Sales, Division General Manager, pictured right with Ponz Pandikuthira, newly appointed Head of Commercial Vehicles Nissan Motor Europe.

Ford Telematics with Telogis

T

elematics systems, prominent in the truck industry have made their way to light commercials. Ford Motor Company has teamed up with Telogis to provide their van customers with the opportunity to reduce fuel costs by up to 20 percent. Ford Telematics, operated and powered by Telogis will stream real time data from each vehicle to enable fleet managers to track vehicle location, fuel consumptions, driver behaviour and safety and maintenance alerts. The system offers fleets direct access to vehicle diagnostic data, enabling them to further reduce costs, help improve driver safety and optimise operations,” explained Barb Samardzich, COO, Ford Europe at the Ford Telematics launch at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hannover. The telematics system available in selected markets across Europe is compatible with Ford’s latest range of Transit Commercial Vehicles as well as the Ford Ranger Pick-Up. On the diagnostics side, the Ford Telematics data will track details from the vehicle’s driveline such as oil change warnings, water contamination in diesel fuel, tyre pressures, safety belt usage and even airbag status.

“Fleet operators can save up to 20% in fuel consumption by optimising vehicle usage and driving routes and improved driving behaviour, along with benefits to driver safety and vehicle driver’s durability,” said Steve Barrow, CV Service Operations, Ford of Europe. The complete Transit family range was on display including a rather special ‘Hot Wheels’ version of the Connect. Designers from both Ford and Hot Wheels worked with the craftsman at Ice Nine Group to convert their vision into a functioning, full-scale vehicle. The Hot Wheels Transit Connect is four inches wider and slightly lower than a production Transit Connect. Literally every body panel was cut, stretched, or remade in some way to create the once-off vehicle. In addition to an eye-catching exterior, the Hot Wheels Transit Connect interior also received a makeover. Ford Focus ST seats were stitched with materials to compliment the exterior paint design, while the rear section of the ‘Hot’ Transit Connect was remade to house toolboxes under a false floor, and a 55-inch TV screen. Two 18-inch tablets are mounted to the inside of the rear doors. The sliding side doors were converted to custom gullwing doors.
