Por aquel entonces era tradición entre los adolescentes practicar una curiosa fiesta pagana derivada de los ritos en honor del dios Lupercus, dios de la fertilidad ,que se celebraba el día 15 de febrero. Era un sorteo mediante el cual cada chico escogía el nombre de una joven que se convertiría en su compañera de diversión durante un año. La Santa Sede quiso acabar con esta celebración pagana y canonizó a San Valentín como patrón de los enamorados.
El cuerpo de San Valentín se conserva actualmente en la Basílica de su mismo nombre que está situada en la ciudad italiana de Terni. Cada 14 de febrero se celebra en este templo un acto de compromiso por parte de diferentes parejas que quieren unirse en matrimonio al año siguiente.
