his May we welcome again one of the most high profile racing events on the planet – the Monaco Grand Prix - a classic in the sporting calendar and a favourite amongst car lovers. Also exciting racing fans this year is the first ever Monaco ePrix, which ‘sold out’ weeks ahead of the event (tickets were free but had to be preordered). It’s encouraging to see the enormous interest in this ground breaking championship and its electric vehicles. A grand prix not only shows people what electric cars are capable of, it also encourages companies to develop new technology to boost performance; technology that will one day make them a more affordable option than traditional fuel dependent cars. Because, let’s face it, it is taking far too long for electric cars to catch on. The first model was

created as far back as 1828, and in 1890, more than 60 electric battery powered taxis were driving around the streets of London. Even in the early 1900s, more cars were powered by electricity in America than by gasoline. But thanks to the discovery of huge gas reserves and the likes of Henry Ford, electric cars were side-lined. Luckily, there’s been massive momentum in recent years, particularly here in France. To assist the uptake of electric cars, the government says it will make charging stations mandatory in all public car parks, train stations, airports and shopping centres. And Nice’s Auto Bleue electric car sharing service is hugely successful and expanding. Electric cars will soon shed the misconception that they are expensive and slow, thanks to events like the ePrix. Finally, it looks as though we are on the right track.

Will it be a hat trick for Nico Rosberg?

The F1 driver targets his third straight podium win

The Principality’s adopted son, Nico Rosberg, is hoping for another first place finish at this year’s Monaco Grand Prix, not least because it is the hardest track in the world of Formula One. BY CASSANDRA TANTI

H

e may drive under a German flag, but Nico Rosberg clearly calls Monaco home - and the Principality certainly has no hesitation in embracing Rosberg as a son either. The 29-year-old has lived here since he was just six weeks old and fondly remembers being driven to school via the very tunnel that he now whizzes through at speeds of up to 280 kilometres per hour in his Mercedes F1 W06 Hybrid. For the past two years he has lived the dream – standing at the top of the F1 podium before an elated home crowd. Last year was particularly special – it was exactly 30 years since his father, Keke Rosberg, secured the same Monaco Grand Prix win. The big question now is: can he perform a hat trick? The strongest person standing in his way is of course fellow team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who leads the championship by 27 points ahead of Rosberg, after Bahrain delivered the Brit his third win of the season. Competitiveness fuels the “friendly” rivalry between these two neighbours – they both reside in the same building in

Monaco – something which goes as far back as their karting days. And there have been some very public spats between the pair, most recently with Rosberg accusing Hamilton of driving too slowly in the Chinese Grand Prix, putting his second-placed team-mate in danger of being caught by Sebastian Vettel in third. Head of motorsport Toto Wolff has gone so far as to say that Mercedes could bring in team orders during races to prioritise victories for either Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg. While acknowledging it would be a highly unpopular call, Wolff said Mercedes’ number one objective is their responsibility to the team and the brand. Whether that will influence a possible win for Rosberg in Monaco is yet to be seen. There’s also plenty going on behind the scenes for Nico Rosberg this year. He and his wife Vivian are expecting their first child, a little girl, in August. The father-to-be and F1 favourite took some time out of his busy racing schedule in Bahrain to answer a few questions for RT Magazine.

First ever Monaco e-Prix The world’s most iconic racing destination is also hosting a round of the Formula E Grand Prix on 9th May - the world’s first fully electric car racing series. Formula E focuses on three core values of energy, environment and entertainment. It is a fusion of engineering, technology, sport, science and design all combining to drive the change towards an electric future. For season one, Formula E includes 10 teams, each driving four Spark-Renault SRT 01E Formula E cars (two per driver), which will go head-to-head in creating a unique and exciting racing series designed to appeal to a new generation of motor sport fans. It represents a vision for the future of the motor industry over the coming decades, serving as a framework for R&D around the electric vehicle, accelerating general interest in these cars and promoting sustainability.

The eagerly anticipated race, which is free to watch, will take place on Monaco’s famous Grand Prix circuit. Monaco is 8th in a nine round championship, which included circuits in Miami, London and Berlin.

RT Magazine: Nico, after winning the last two Monaco Grand Prix, how realistic do you think a hat trick is for you? Nico Rosberg: We have a very fast car again this year and if everything comes together, then it is realistic. But until then, it’s still a long, long way away. Does the Monaco race hold special meaning for you? The Monaco Grand Prix is an absolute legend – it is the temple of motorsport. I am very grateful and proud that I’ve won here. Interestingly enough, in 2013 my father Keke and I became the first father and son to both win at Monaco, 30 years apart from each other. Exceptionally, my team gave me the trophy, which is normally kept in a cabinet at the team factory. Now it is with me on the cabinet in my living room. What’s your advice on the best location from which to watch the race in Monaco? The best place is from the slope above the paddock below the palace. You get to see the La Rascasse bend which is very cool, so I recommend this. Prices aren’t too bad either. Do you feel at home in Monaco? I feel very much at home in Monaco, since I grew up here. All of my closest friends come from here. You and your wife Vivian are expecting a little girl in a few months. Given your love of professional tennis when you were younger as well as motorsports, what role do you think competitive sport will play in the life of your daughter? Firstly, we have to get the rest of the pregnancy and the birth well behind us. Then we’ll see!

30 years of La Palme d’Or Cuisine, cinema, art & Chef Christian Sinicropi

A festival of culinary delights at La Palme d’Or in 2015… finally a reason to celebrate after 30 years of excellence. BY PETRA HALL

L

a Palme d’Or is not only the hotly contested top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, it is also the name of the two Michelin starred restaurant at the Martinez Hotel, christened by former head chef Christian Willer 30 years ago. Just one year after opening in May 1985, Willer secured the restaurant’s first star, followed by a second in 1991. A decade later, young chef Christian Sinicropi from Louis XV in Monaco joined the team in his home town of Cannes. At the right hand side of the Alsace master, Sinicropi’s talent and ingenuity grew until he naturally took over from his successor in 2007. Sinicropi is a chef, bien sûr. But he is also an artist, a philosopher, a connoisseur and a little bit of an actor. The performances he gives his guests are certainly worthy of a stage. He is always searching for the “mouton à cinq pattes”, or the “sheep with five legs” as he says, because normality and conformity are foreign to him. The most important thing about his cuisine, stresses the executive chef, is the produce: Mediterranean, as you would expect from this region; rustic and authentic, while preserving the prestigious identity of this privileged coastal strip. In addition, the presentation of his dishes is very important, for this chef also has an artistic streak. With his wife Catherine, he designs and shapes ceramic plates to cradle his culinary creations - colourful or minimalist, always in harmony with the various delicacies that are placed upon them. Even young artists like Moya, Gilbert Gruss and Laurentmô

lend themselves to his contemporary dining. For years, Sinicropi has designed a unique dish for the Cannes Film Festival that is inspired by the work of the respective jury president. Last year, it was Jane Campion, so the executive chef “created a scene” from the Palme d’Or winning film The Piano, written and directed by the New Zealander. “For the menu, I associated the sensitivity of the film’s story to tastes through textures, acidity, sweetness, bitterness - much like a perfume creator would with a range of senses and smells,” said Sinicropi following the 2014 event. “I symbolised the film with lamb for its softness, its fragility, which represented to me the overall character of the film.” It is not surprising then that the exclusive Dinner of the Jury is always held at the Palme d’Or, for it is then that the executive chef is truly in his element, each course served on thematicallythemed ceramic plates. We can only imagine the creations he will formulate for this year’s jury presidents - Joel and Ethan Coen, creators of The Big Lebowski, Fargo and more recently Inside Llewelyn Davis and No Country for Old Men. As part of the 30th anniversary celebrations this year, a number of special evenings will be held under the title ‘Dîner à Quatre Mains’, or Dinner with Four Hands, with guest chefs including Enrico Crippa from the triple Michelin starred restaurant Piazza Duomo in Alba, and three Michelin starred French chef Eric Pras.

Cannes goes back to its indie cinematic roots

T

he Cannes Film Festival marks the beginning of the exciting new film year, which is why - apart from all the glamour and glitterati - it is such a highly anticipated event. But this year, fans will notice an unusual absence of American and British films from the line-up, both in and out of competition. Even the coveted opening film spot, which is traditionally filled by a Hollywood blockbuster, will this year be given to a French film by female director Emmanuelle Bercot. It looks like the Festival de Cannes 2015 has returned to its indie cinematic roots. For the first time in the history of the festival, a female director will open the event with her film La Tête haute (Standing Tall). It tells the story of Malony and his upbringing from six to 18 years, as a children’s judge and social worker try to save him. The movie was filmed in the Nord Pas de Calais, Rhône Alpes and Paris regions, with Rod Paradot playing the main character. “The choice of this film may seem surprising, given the rules generally applied to the Festival de Cannes Opening Ceremony,” explained festival director Thierry Frémaux. “It is a clear reflection of our desire to see the festival start with a different piece, which is both bold and moving.” The world première of La Tête haute will be shown in the Grand Théâtre Lumière on 13th May, and will be released in French cinemas the same day. As in previous years, cinemas screening the film will be able to take part in the festivities by also screening the Opening Ceremony, which is this year hosted by Lambert Wilson. Of course, it wouldn’t be Cannes without the big names of cinema to guarantee plenty of A-listers on that red carpet at the Palais des Festivals. So among the competition titles are

MAY

Gus Van Sant’s Sea of Trees starring Matthew McConaughey and Naomi Watts; 1950’s romantic lesbian drama Carol by Todd Haynes, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara; and Denis Villeneuve’s cartel thriller Sicario with Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin and Emily Blunt. There’s further star power in the out of competition screenings, with the likes of Woody Allen’s romantic dramedy Irrational Man starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, and Pete Docter’s Pixar animated comedy Inside Out, as well as a special screening of Natalie Portman’s A Tale of Love and Darkness. Also capturing attention is Amy, a documentary on late singer Amy Winehouse by director Asif Kapadia, which will get a midnight screening. And Aussie director Justin Kurzel’s new adaptation of Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, will feature in competition. Meanwhile, there is plenty of excitement surrounding George Miller’s highly anticipated fourth installment to the trilogy that made Mel Gibson famous, Mad Max: Fury Road, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. It will be debuting in Cannes but won’t be competing for a prize. Interestingly, there are a number of ‘firsts’ happening this year. In addition to a female-directed opening film, it will be Pierre Lescure’s first time as president, while Oscar winners Joel and Ethan Coen will be the first ever pair to head the competition jury. They’ll be joined by a jury of their peers, which includes Sienna Miller and Jake Gyllenhall.

Culture not confrontation Exclusive interview with Russia’s Ambassador to Paris & Monaco, Alexandr Orlov

This year marks a celebration of Russian culture in the Principality, with hundreds of high-profile events planned over the coming months.

A

BY PETRA HALL & ANNA RAKHMANKO

lexandr Orlov was appointed Russian Ambassador to Paris and Monaco in 2008. The father of three spoke to RT Magazine about the relationship between Monaco and Russia, his country’s contribution to European culture, and how the Year of Russia 2015 can benefit everyone involved. RT Magazine: Mr. Orlov, as the Russian Ambassador to France and Monaco, what importance do you attach to the Year of Russia in the Principality? There has always been a special relationship on a national level between our States, and these kinds of events allow us to understand the culture and traditions of the partner country. This contributes to international understanding and helps to reduce mutual prejudices. Modern culture occupies a central place in Russia and this project will lead to a better understanding of our country, so people can see with their own eyes how today’s generation of Russian artists, writers, musicians and filmmakers live. I am convinced that Russia Year 2015 will have the same success in Monaco as it did in France in 2010. What role does culture play between different citizens? In my opinion, culture has always been the most effective way of establishing long-term closeness between people, and I believe this will always be the case. True culture speaks a universal language that is understood by people of different nationalities and faiths, beliefs and attitudes. Unfortunately, some of our Western partners try to impose geopolitical confrontation on Russia - for example, economic sanctions against us and seeking to isolate our country. In these difficult conditions, culture is a common mental space in which there is no room for short-term political strategies; it helps to strengthen the friendship and mutual sympathy between the people of Russia and the European Union. I’m sure this mental space establishes a solid basis for the normalisation of our relations and in the future may lead to the formation of a larger Europe - from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Why do the people of Russia and its history fascinate people so much? The contribution of Russian writers, artists, composers and musicians in enriching world culture is well known. Russian culture is an integral part of our common European civilisation, which is hard to imagine without music by Glinka, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich; without the literary works of Tolstoy, Chekhov, Pushkin, Solzhenitsyn; and without paintings by Chagall, Malevich and Kandinsky. At the same time, Russian culture has always preserved its unique identity - especially its inherent poetry, profoundness

and stratification, because Russian culture has so many different layers. It absorbs the best examples of European culture, especially French, adds its own traditions and gives them a new interpretation. Perhaps therein lies Russia’s special attraction to Europeans. From Princess Anna of Kiev - Queen of France in the 11th century, to Peter the Great; from Catherine the Great - who supported French philosophers and educators, to the Russian immigration of the early 20th century which supplied a plethora of outstanding artists… there are centuries-old ties between Russia and Western Europe, a relationship of mutual influence and cultural enrichment. Throughout our histories there have been many great and tragic events: Russia protecting Europe amid the Mongol invasion, expanding the borders of European civilisation to the Pacific coast, defeating Napoleon and Hitler, liberating Europe from the Nazis and sending the first man into space. One cannot be indifferent to this history. Russia is huge, Monaco is tiny. How can a relationship exist between two very contrasting countries? Russia and Monaco are linked not only by a historical friendship but also by common interests and similar attitudes to many international issues. Even in the second half of the 19th century, our countries signed a series of agreements and actively developed cultural and humanitarian relations. Famous Russian opera singers and ballet companies performed here, while exhibitions of Russian artists were organised. In the post-Soviet period, bilateral cooperation received new impetus. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2006 there have been regular political meetings, most recently involving Prince Albert II. Russia has taken part in scientific expeditions and forums in Monaco, and is a guest at international sporting events. In October 2013, the Prince paid our country his first official visit during which the Heads of State and government decided to host the Year of Russia in the Principality in 2015. The implementation of this major intergovernmental project aims to consolidate the high quality of relations between Russia and Monaco and to give new impetus to our cooperation. What is the highlight of the Year of Russia in Monaco for you? The program is very diverse and has many highlights, with events covering culture, economy, science, education, environment, sports and gastronomy. Among the most notable was the appearance of the Bolshoi Ballet and their production of ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ during the official opening; but also the Symphony Orchestra concert under the baton of Valery Gergiev in the Prince’s Palace; the exhibition ‘Russia and the artistic avant-garde’ at the Grimaldi Forum, and

MAY

the exhibition about the Grimaldi dynasty and Prince Romanov in the Palace; the opera evening with Anna Netrebko; the presence of Russian sailing boats ‘Krusenstern’ and ‘Sedov’ in the port of Monaco, and more. I am sure that we can expect even further surprises!

Big day for Prince Jacques & Princess Gabriella Monaco celebrates baptism of palace twins

The ver y private Princely family will step out for their second appearance together in a ceremony that will be aired for the public. BY CASSANDRA TANTI

I

t’s been a long four months since we last got a glimpse of little Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, lovingly cradled by their parents at the Palace balcony during an official presentation to the public. This month, they head back into the spotlight for their baptism, which will take place on Sunday 10th May at 10.30am in the Cathedral of Monaco. The ceremony will be televised in its entirety on the Monaco Info channel, and afterwards the public can cheer the Princely family along the route between the Cathedral and the Palace. Parents Prince Albert and Princess Charlene have kept their new little family far from the glare of international media since the twins’ birth on 10th December. Apart from a few Christmas photos and the public presentation in January, neither parent has been spotted publicly with their children. Princess Charlene has taken a notable step out of the spotlight since the babies were born, with her absence at the Rose Ball in March coming as a surprise to many. Rather, the 37-year-old is restricting herself to events surrounding the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation and the former Olympic swimmer looked positively delighted during the South Africa – Monaco rugby challenge in April (pictured).

Indeed, there have been a lot of changes following the birth of the Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella. Earlier this year, the family temporarily moved into a villa in Cap Ferrat so renovation works could be undertaken on the 700year-old palace. “We’ve been planning to renovate and redecorate for a long time,” the Prince told People. “It’s not totally calm and quiet the way you would like to have when there are very young children around. There’s lots of noise, a lot of people running about. We thought it was a lot of work to have done around kids.” Late last year, the Palace auctioned off its Napoleonic memorabilia to fund the renovations, including Napoleon’s diamond encrusted sword for €400,000 and one of his renowned bicorn hats for €1.9 million. Parisian auction house Osenat revealed that a total of €10 million was raised for the extensive works, which include a makeover of the private family apartments. “As far as decorating the apartments,” said the Prince, “I’ve had some input of course, but I’ve let my wife decide things. And she’s let me have some input.” “I mean, c’mon, I need my man cave!” he said to People, laughing. The Prince, who has two other children from prior

relationships, says of fatherhood the third time around that he’s “been involved with the children, and with them as much as I can, ever since their birth.” “I try to help out with their feeding,” he said, “I give them their midnight bottles, I change and bathe them, and thank goodness we have help because it’s twins. But it’s been an incredible experience.” 2015 is a year of many celebrations for the Grimaldi family. Andrea Casiraghi and his wife Tatiana welcomed a baby girl on 12th April, while Pierre Casiraghi and Beatrice Borromeo are reportedly set to wed in the summer.

A Guilty pleasure Koons-designed yacht makes a splash in the French Riviera

The 35-metre motor boat breaks all the rules when it comes to design, bringing new meaning to the term ‘the art of yachting’ BY CASSANDRA TANTI

I

t is unlike any other yacht ever created; a floating work of art - inside and out. Bold geometric designs, fierce edges; on top a huge image of Iggy Pop. It is no wonder that Guilty has made such a splash in the art world since its completion in 2008. Her owner is Athens-based Dakis Joannou, a Greek Cypriot industrialist who also happens to be one of the largest and most important collectors of contemporary art in the world. During an exclusive interview with RT Magazine in Villefranche, the 76-year-old billionaire said Guilty provokes a reaction where ever she goes, which is exactly what he was after. “Some people think it’s crazy, some people love it, but that’s art isn’t it?” said Joannou. His love of contemporary art began in the 80s when Joannou founded the Deste Foundation in Athens – an exhibition platform promoting emerging as well as established artists, and exploring the connections between contemporary art and culture. It was during this time that he was introduced to superstar American artist Jeff Koons, the poster child for art-world excess.

“I met Koons in the mid-80s and started to collect his and his friends’ works – that’s how I ended up becoming a collector, almost by accident,” revealed Joannou. In fact, the industrialist was an important early supporter of Koons, buying one of his signature “equilibrium tanks” for $2,700 (2,500€). The Greek billionaire has since amassed dozens of works by the artist, but none so big as the 35-metre yacht Guilty. Drawing inspiration from the World War One boatcamouflaging technique called razzle dazzle, Koons created an elaborate façade combining angular shapes and abstract dotted patterns. According to Joannou, “the idea was that people would not understand what they are looking at – where the nose is and where the back is. The whole concept is to confuse, not to hide.” So, yesterday’s war strategy became today’s bold artistic statement. At the helm of Guilty is Australian Captain Mark Souter, who says he enjoys the enthusiastic response each time they arrive at port. “The reaction on the quay is always the same: thousands of photos are immediately taken

and the physical gestures are equally as interesting.” The designer is Italian Ivana Porfiri, who had been looking for a unique project at the time she was approached by Joannou. It was the perfect threesome: all agreed that art was fundamental to the project, rather than just part of the subsequent decoration. The end result is a yacht that breaks all the rules in design. Where the bridge should be you find the main cabin, featuring 180-degree views and the word ‘Feelings’ hanging in neon lights above the bed. The interior is dominated by white open spaces and extremely large windows to maximise natural lighting. A central staircase turns from pinkish violet to galactic blue and finally warm yellow. There’s no wood panelling, leather joinery, marble bar, or hardwood flooring – in fact you don’t even have to take off your shoes when boarding. “At first, it looked like a container ship inside,” laughed Joannou, “completely flat from front to back. Then Ivana refined it. The whole idea was not about style, but starting from scratch and doing a design that fits your needs, rather than looking at the style and compromising on needs.” So what do Dakis Joannou and his wife Lietta enjoy doing most during their time in the French Riviera? Visiting art of course. “Their itinerary included an afternoon at the Maeght Foundation with lunch in St. Paul de Vence, the New National Museum of Monaco, and for their next visit during the Grand Prix for which we have procured them a berth, we have arranged a private visit of Eileen Gray’s Villa E-1027 and Le Corbusier’s Cabanon in Roquebrune,” revealed Tomaso Moreno from Catalano Shipping Services. Keep an eye out for Guilty at Port Hercule this May.

e was one of Hollywood’s sexiest leading men, known impressively as the ‘King of Cool’. An actor, race car driver and father, McQueen was the e pitome of t he Ame r i c an dre am, r is i ng f rom precarious beginnings to become one of the most famous movie stars in the world. His life was cut short by mesothelioma at the age of 50 years, but not before he performed in 45 films, TV series and documentaries. James Dean managed to become a screen legend despite acting in only three Hollywood films. His role in Rebel Without a Cause made him a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement, and

his performances in East of Eden and Giant were met with equal acclaim. Unfortunately, he wasn’t alive long enough to revel in his success. The 24-year-old was also a professional race car driver and was killed while driving his beloved Porsche 550 Spyder to a race in California in 1955. He remains the only actor to have had two posthumous acting nominations. To mark Steve McQueen’s 85th birthday and the 60th anniversary of the death of James Dean, a new exhibition by Frédéric Lecomte-Dieu will be on display at the Métropole Shopping Center until 25th May. Rare photos of the two stars, with captions, will be on show, and more than a thousand catalogues will be published.

Monaco Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes new chief Kazuki Yamada

will lead the orchestra of worldclass musicians

A

BY PETRA HALL

fter lengthy negotiations, a decision has finally been announced. Kazuki Yamada will be the new artistic director of the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. Yamada will take the place of current conductor Gian Luigi Gelmetti, who assumed the role in 2012 after his predecessor, the popular Jakov Kreizberg, passed away at just 52 years of age after a long illness. Since 2013, polite and reserved Yamada, who is Japanese, has been a familiar face in the Principality with frequent stints as guest conductor of the Monegasque orchestra. He is also a regular guest at the Philharmonic Hall in Geneva, as well as conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Japan and artistic director of various choirs in Tokyo. In a short space of time, Yamada has become internationally recognised, going on to lead a long list of prestigious orchestras around the world, including the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Paris Orchestra and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. The transition will be a gradual one, according to a statement

by Princess Caroline of Hanover, who is president of the orchestra. Roman Gelmetti’s contract officially ends on 31st August this year, but he will still be present throughout the entire 2015/16 season as Honorary Director. Yamada will use this time to prepare for the 2016/17 season, a compromise which was probably not an easy one to come to. The two musicians could not be more different. And, ambition is certainly one quality that Yamada doesn’t lack. At a press conference in April, the 36year-old conductor emphasised his conviction that the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra has the potential to be one of the best in the world. So thanks to this latest announcement, it seems that the orchestra’s musicians are smiling once again. Their relationship with Gelmetti had not been the most harmonious. One musician told RT Magazine: “We are very relieved and finally motivated once again.”

From Versailles to Saint Tropez Two Michelin starred chef signs up with Villa Belrose for 2015 season

Under the direction of renowned Scottish multi-starred chef Gordon Ramsay, Simone Zanoni is excelling in his culinary career. Now, with his loyal sous chef Pietro Volontè by his side, the pair is ready to take on the kitchen at Villa Belrose. BY CASSANDRA TANTI

I

t is a bitter-sweet moment for Villa Belrose, a five-star luxury hotel situated in the hills above Saint Tropez and member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux. This year marks the departure of Michelin starred Executive Chef Thierry Thiercelin, who is looking to new horizons after 17 years at the helm. Stepping into his place is Simone Zanoni who, at just 29 years of age, has managed to forge a very impressive career so far. In 2003, the Italian became head chef of the three Michelin star restaurant ‘Gordon Ramsay’ in London, working alongside the world famous Gordon Ramsay for four years. A year later he won Best Italian Chef working abroad. In 2007 Zanoni moved to Versailles to become executive chef of ‘Gordon Ramsay at the Trianon’.

For the past nine years, Pietro Volontè has been by his side as sous chef. Now, the pair is heading to the Mediterranean and Villa Belrose is thrilled to welcome them. “Our customers will enjoy modern French cuisine and Mediterranean produce with Italian influences, complimented, as always, by outstanding views over the bay of Saint Tropez,” said Thomas H. Althoff, owner of Villa Belrose and Chairman of the Althoff Hotel Collection Group and Ameron Hotel Collection. “It is a great honour for us to bring these two excellent chefs Simone Zanoni and Pietro Volontè into the kitchen of Le Belrose restaurant,” added hotel director Robert-Jan van Straaten. The new menu created by Simone Zanoni and Pietro Volontè is now available.

How to make a French waiter smile Candidates Anthony Boldrini, Laeticia Valentini, Simone Gagliari and Jean François Barrat with Christophe Prosper (second from right)

heir knowledge of food, wine and ideal pairings; the way they manoeuvre around a full dining room with the grace of a ballet dancer; how they manage to pour a bottle of wine while carrying four plates and a basket of bread… it is all evidence that in this country, a job in hospitality is a bona fide career, not just something to pay your way through university. But French waiters are a breed unto themselves; their deep sighs, frequent frowns and purposeful lack of comprehension is insulting. It is an attitude which has earned them an unenviable reputation internationally. “It is all true, everything they say about French waiters,” says Christophe Prosper, manager of the Grand Hotel du Cap Ferrat’s starred restaurant. “The French sometimes think that they are always the best, but this is not true.” Three years ago, Christophe resurrected the annual competition ‘Best Waiter in the Côte d’Azur’. A handful of

lucky young hospitality workers are invited to learn from the best in the industry while vying for the title of top waiter. This year’s winner, crowned in April, was Anthony Boldrini, valet for the Prince’s Palace in Monaco. Like his students at the Paul Augier hospitality school in Nice, Christophe instructs participants that, in today’s world of service, manners and politeness are as important as technical skill. “In catering school now our exams and practical lessons have changed - we do less flambé and more welcoming.” So how do you make a French waiter smile? “Send them abroad,” says Christophe, who himself has worked in America, England and Germany. “We need to be in contact with more people, not just always with the French,” says the 44-year-old. “From each country you live or visit you take something. When you come back you are a person of the world and can relate to

Australians, Americans, everybody.” So, is it fair to expect a little more friendliness when I order my café au lait in the future? “We need to work on it more, but in 2015 this is a very big issue for us. Welcoming people is very important - at the airport, in a taxi - but we will get better at it.” Indeed, Christophe is the ideal person to inspire change in this new generation of servers; he is not only extremely professional and highly trained – he is absolutely passionate about what he does. “There is no better job than this one. Everyone in life serves somebody, but we are in the pleasure business. A two-hour moment when guests forget everything; we are an extension of the hand of the chef - we don’t cook the dish, but we must explain it as though we have created it. If you don’t like people, then you can’t do this job.”

King of Cotton opens in French Riviera Why there is only one choice when it comes to linen: Egyptian cotton

L

ife’s little pleasures: jumping into bed and snuggling up to soft Egyptian cotton sheets; stepping out of a warm shower and enshrouding your body in a lush, super absorbent towel; impressing dinner party guests with crisp, restaurant quality table cloth and napkins. But choosing linen for the bedroom, bathroom and dining room can be quite daunting given the massive array of options available. It can also be expensive. On the other hand, it doesn’t have to be either.

ADVERTORIAL

WHY CHOOSE EGYPTIAN COTTON?

Fabrics made of Egyptian cotton are softer, finer and last longer than any other cotton in existence. It is for these reasons that Egyptian cotton has prevailed as the “best” cotton in the world over the past three centuries; its softness, strength and superior characteristics setting it apart from other natural fibres. Because of this high quality, fine hotels across the globe wouldn’t consider offering anything other than Egyptian cotton to their guests.

One of the most important linen suppliers to the hotel industry is King of Cotton, born in the UK in 1995 from Italian origins that go back to 1880. Due to demand, King of Cotton now offers all of its beautiful products directly to the public at a wholesale price through retail outlets and a website. And the most exciting news for people here on the French Riviera is that King of Cotton has just opened its first retail outlet in the region, in addition to its four UK-based stores. The outlet on Rue de la Liberté in Nice offers the company’s signature fine quality cotton bed linen, luxurious towels and dining linen at great prices. Drop in and take a look for yourself. King of Cotton has just made life’s little pleasures easier to attain.

Saint Tropez is back on the agenda

Riviera hotspot kicks off the busy season with a host of exciting events

W

hile it’s perhaps most famous for its glamorous connotations and the celebrities who are spotted there each summer, Saint Tropez also has a wealth of cultural activities and events on offer, and it is these which truly illustrate the identity and heritage of the small Riviera town. Opening the summer calendar is the 457th edition of the Bravades. This ancient Provençal tradition will see locals and visitors gather from 16th to 18th May to celebrate Tropes, the patron saint of Saint Tropez, as well as the town’s military achievements. Over three days, locals don original military uniforms and march through the streets to music performed by live bands, stopping at intervals to ceremoniously fire their muskets into the air. Five hours of parades are traditionally scheduled for the first day of the event, during which a bust of the patron saint is carried at the head of the processions. On the 17th, there will be a morning mass to which the townspeople will wear traditional Provençal dress, sing songs and carry red and white flowers. And on the 18th, the whole town

Summer is almost upon us and with it an abundance of dates to jot down on the calendar. BY MADELEINE ADEY proceeds to the hillside Sainte Anne Chapel – Tropes bust in tow - for an outdoor mass and picnic. Another taste of true Saint Tropez tradition can be experienced at the Latin Sails Festival, from 28th to 31st May. In just 15 years this event has become an institution. Over the four days, more than 60 boats will flock to the Port of Saint Tropez to take part in this friendly festival. Visitors can take a stroll along the port, admiring the boats, tasting Mediterranean specialities, browsing carpentry, crafts and traditional skills stands, and attend exhibitions and talks given by historians. The regatta will give the opportunity for sailboats to compete in either the pleasure or racing categories, while Catalan crews will demonstrate rowing races on traditional boats and the Saint Raphael Club will put on a jousting show at the port. This event brings Saint Tropez to life with colour and energy, with everything from art exhibitions to dancing - and most importantly boats!

Meanwhile, the Athina Onassis Horse Show, held from 4th to 6th June in Ramatuelle, combines glamour with high performance sport. This is just the second year that the esteemed event has come to France, having previously been at home in Brazil. 35 of the world’s best riders will compete in the beautiful setting of Pampelonne beach over a period of three days. Uniquely, this year will also see 65 amateurs competing in the same conditions and in the same arena as the most prestigious riders. And, over the summer, the Bateaux Verts company will be on hand to ferry visitors between the seaside towns of this part of the coastline. It’s the quickest and ‘cleanest’ way of travelling along the Gulf and port of Saint Tropez. This year, the Bateaux Verts are teaming up with the Trade Unions of the Hospitality Industries of the East Var to ensure there’s an ongoing service, day and night, seven days a week. It’s a great way to escape the traffic this season!

RAIL UPGRADE CuneoVentimiglia FRANCE’S SNCF NETWORK and its Italian counterpart RFI have signed a financing agreement with the Piedmont region for works to begin on improving the French section of the line connecting Cuneo and Ventimiglia, via Breil sur Roya. Marc Daunis, Senator and Mayor of Valbonne Sophia Antipolis, has been campaigning for this line for many years, saying that it “opens up the tourists route for residents in the valley and develops cross-border trade.”

NEIGHBOURS UNITE against crime AS THE NUMBER OF BURGLARIES INCREASES SHARPLY in the region, communities are fighting back by taking matters into their own hands. More and more residents are signing up to a neighbourhood watch scheme and it is already having a big impact. The scheme, called ‘Voisins Vigilants’ (vigilant neighbours), has received a significant profile boost in the Alpes Maritimes over the past few months. In late 2014, 355 districts were registered with ‘Voisins Vigilants’, and today the number has reached 401. In Nice, there are 50 neighbourhoods signed up to the network with 843 members, while Cannes, Grasse, Vence, Villeneuve Loubet and Roquefort les Pins are also participating. This increased concern over safety comes amid a rise in the number of burglaries. March 2015 saw 20% more robberies in the Alpes Maritimes, with an increase of 1,266 break-ins from the previous year. In addition to helping individuals feel safer in their own homes and enhancing a sense of community, the scheme is actually having a

verifiable positive effect. In neighbourhoods which have adopted ‘Voisins Vigilants’, burglaries have dropped by between 20% and 40%, according to Nice Matin. And in the past two months, six arrests were made in Carros alone thanks to the initiative.

VAR BEACH most beautiful in EU

HYÈRES HAS WON TOP SPOT IN A RANKING OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES IN EUROPE. Notre Dame beach on the island of Porquerolles, just off the coast of the Var town, was given the impressive accolade by a European tourism organisation, which noted its unspoilt landscape and variety of wildlife. The ranking was drawn up by European Best Destination, a Brussels-based travel organisation dedicated to the promotion of culture and tourism in Europe. Hyères offers a 40-kilometre stretch of enchanted and well-preserved beaches, with idyllic white sand and clear, safe waters, rocky inlets, coves and salt marshes. Bordered by a stretch of pine forests, Notre Dame beach combines the unspoilt beauty seen along much of this section of coast, with a less crowded feel due to its relative remoteness. It’s also environmentally-conscious, with an ongoing re-vegetation programme in place. Its water quality, wildlife and flora were also noted as exceptional.

MAJOR FIBRE-OPTIC rollout by 2016

BY THE END OF 2016, TELECOMMUNICATIONS GIANT ORANGE will extend its fibre-optic technology across the whole of Nice, ensuring 100% of homes can surf the internet without disruption. Currently, 40% of homes in Nice are covered by fibre-optic technology provided by Orange. “We are going to significantly speed up investments to cover the whole city by the end of next year,” said Director of Orange in the Southeast Patrick Figueres. Fibre-optic technology provides a high speed internet connection and allows users to stream data (music, films, games etc) on all devices, from Smart TVs to iPhones. Nice is one of nine cities in France that have been chosen by Orange to install fibre-optics throughout its territory, alongside Paris, Montpellier, Lyon, Metz, Bayonne, Brest, Caen and Lille.

NEW MAMMOGRAM service in Monaco A NEW ULTRASOUND BREAST IMAGING/ SCREENING SERVICE has been inaugurated at the Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco. The new technology optimises early detection of breast cancer as well

as reducing the amount of radiation necessary for diagnosis. The Monaco Government invested over one million euros to provide the state-of-the-art mammography technology: the Selenia Dimensions 800D tomosynthesis system (from the Hologic brand). Councillor for Social and Health Affairs Stephane Valeri thanked the Pink Ribbon Monaco Association for having contributed to the fight against breast cancer for many years, through a huge number of events and donations. He also announced the launch of a new breast cancer screening campaign, to raise awareness amongst a larger proportion of the female population. Also, any woman aged between 50-80 who is a resident in the Principality and is insured or is a copyright holder of a Monegasque social organisation (CPM or SPME), will receive a personalised letter with an invitation to the Senology service to undergo a mammogram and ultrasound free of charge.

CALL FOR HELP TO STOP migrant“explosion” UP TO 800 IMMIGRANTS WERE ARRESTED IN ONE WEEK alone at various points across the Alpes Maritimes in April, leading to calls from officials for increased staff to deal with the problem. The “explosion of asylum seekers” is a result of the onset of spring and calmer seas, making the trek across the Mediterranean safer. According to police union Alliance, between 550 and 800 immigrants tried to enter France between 19th and 26th April. Entry points include the Menton Garavan train station, the La Turbie motorway toll, and the Roya valley road. The union has asked the Prefecture of the Alpes Maritimes for permanent allocations not just temporary reinforcements. Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi was quick to respond to the union’s call, saying he had already requested police reinforcements from Prime Minister Manuel Valls. “The reality is that in our territories, there’s been an explosion in the number of asylum seekers of 44% year on year, as well as the tripling of illegal immigration in 2014 and the fact that it’s already up 15% over the first quarter of 2015.” The news followed two major incidents involving the sinking of migrant boats in the Mediterranean. “The sudden influx is related to the arrival of spring and the flow of boats resuming when the sea is calm,” said Laurent Laubry, departmental secretary of the Alliance union. Many of the individuals recently arrested had fled from Eritrea in the Horn of Africa, a country which is currently run by one of the cruellest dictators in the world - Isaias Afewerki. It has been named as the world’s most censored country, followed by North Korea. Laubry also noted that, throughout the first quarter of 2015, border police in the Alpes Maritimes arrested more than 2,200 immigrants – double that of the same period in 2014.

THE SAD TRUTH

T

he sun is out and so are the thieves. Unfortunately, one of our new interns here at the RT office in Nice learnt this the hard way. Just one hour after arriving in the country she was robbed of 800€ - in broad daylight. While standing outside her new apartment, laden with bags, a middle aged man ran up, took the wallet from her handbag, and ran off. “I took off after him screaming,” Carina told us, “but I couldn’t catch him and no one would do anything. The police were useless.” Of course I responded by saying that anyone who has lived in the French Riviera long enough knows not to carry that kind of cash around; a sad but true fact. Personally, I’ve had three handbags stolen in Nice. What was also sad to hear – but far from shocking – was that no one would help her, least of all the police. I remember being verbally abused and feeling physically threatened by a man on a French train when I first arrived here, and not one other person in that carriage felt the need to speak up and help me. That’s why I was surprised to learn that neighbourhood watch programmes are suddenly becoming a hit across the Riviera (see the news story). In Nice alone, 843 members are signed up to the scheme, with plenty more interest in nearby towns. And these aren’t just a bunch of nosy neighbours jumping on the bandwagon. The popularity of ‘Voisins Vigilants’ coincides with a 20% increase in burglaries in the Alpes Maritimes over the past 12 months. While the programme is community driven, it is supported by police and provides a way for local people to play a role in addressing crime in their communities and making them safer. But it has taken a while to catch on here. Neighbourhood Watch has been running in America since the 1960s, and dates back to the 80s in the UK and Australia. But as I often say here, better late than never. Perhaps it will encourage a few more people to look out for each other and perform acts of bravery. Who knows, one day in the future, someone may actually run after that man who just stole a poor young girl’s wallet or defend that female passenger on a train. We can only hope.

NEW CINEMA for Cannes

IN THREE YEARS’ TIME, CANNES will be home to one of the most impressive cinema facilities in France. Plans have been revealed for a new 12-screen multiplex particularly fitting for a city which is renowned for its annual film festival. The Cannes City Council agreed in April to sell a plot of land in Cannes La Bocca to Cannes Cinema Company (CCC). The project will provide high quality cultural and leisure facilities as well as impressive architecture. The state-of-the-art complex is designed by Rudy Ricciotti, the French architect behind the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations in Marseille. The cinema complex, which has an estimated completion date of late 2018, will seat 2,426 people across 12 screens, the largest of which will cater for 433 people. There will also be a VIP room featuring double seats. The multiplex will feature the most modern cinematic equipment and the latest technology in terms of imaging, sounds and accessories, including dynamic 4D seating which responds to the film and moves and vibrates in relation to the on-screen action.

NEW STRATEGY to fight extremism

THE ALPES MARITIMES IS THE FIRST DEPARTMENT IN FRANCE to introduce a series of anti-radicalisation measures. President of the AM Eric Ciotti announced in April an extensive and far-reaching plan targeting young people, their families, those receiving social benefits, officials of the Alpes Maritimes and their relatives. The measures are based on five main aims: to increase training and education of both professionals and the public; to increase safety in public spaces; to detect, identify, assess and pass on information of concern; to prevent, monitor and act on situations identified as radicalisation, and to manage and control access to certain rights and benefits. The new initiatives come as radicalisation amongst young people is a rapidly growing concern in the department, with the AM having the highest number of reported cases of radicalised youths in France – 117 cases in the past 11 months. And, of all the residents in France which have been identified as being related to jihadist activities – French or otherwise – 10% are based here.

NICE 3RD BEST SUMMER destination worldwide

THE POPULARITY OF THE FRENCH RIVIERA CAPITAL ISN’T SHOWING ANY SIGN OF DECLINE JUDGING BY TWO NEW AWARDS. The city was ranked as third best summer destination in the world by US travel site US News Travel, behind the Hawaiian Island Maui and French capital Paris. The ranking was based on votes cast by users of the site, which focused on several factors including activities, environment, accommodation, restaurants, weather conditions and accessibility. The site editors also analysed thousands of comments and criticisms and cross-checked these with their own research. And the awards don’t stop there. Nice has also come in second place – behind Paris in TripAdvisor’s ‘Travelers’ Choice in France 2015’ list. For the third consecutive year the site’s users, who review the hotels, restaurants and attractions of a destination, have chosen Nice as their second most-preferred French city.

group of four men ambushed the jewellery store wearing motorbike helmets. In a hold-up that lasted less than two minutes, Thierry Unik was shot in the head before the perpetrators fled on a motorcycle and stolen scooter with a hoard of gold jewellery. The death sparked outrage throughout the community, as the incident came amid a spate of jewellery heists and armed robberies in the area.

days after the assault. The two alleged perpetrators are 24-year-old Samine Saeed Ahmed and 31-year-old Alhair Hamadi, both of whom remain in Baumettes Prison in Marseille. While they are the main suspects for the murder of Hélène Pastor, five more people are indicted for plotting the crime, including Mrs Pastor’s son-in-law Wojciech Janowski and his personal trainer Pascal Dauriac, as well as three ‘middle men’.

SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM targets drivers in Nice

POLICE HAVE ARRESTED FIVE PEOPLE IN MARSEILLE in relation to the Hélène Pastor double murder investigation. According to local media, the people in custody are “likely to have provided the means, including weapons and ammunition, to the perpetrators,” a source close to the investigation is quoted as saying. The arrests were issued by investigating judge Christophe Perruaux and followed a reconstruction of the gruesome murder, in which Hélène Pastor and her driver Mohamed Darwish were shot in a car outside the Archet Hospital in Nice. The alleged gunman refused to participate in the recreation. Both victims died from their injuries a few

LIFE SENTENCE for Unik killer FOUR MEN HAVE BEEN SENTENCED TO UP TO 22 YEARS IN PRISON for the murder of a jeweller in Cannes la Bocca in 2011, an attack which sent shockwaves throughout the local community. The men were convicted of ‘theft with violence causing death’ and ‘conspiracy to commit robbery as part of an organised group’. Stéphane Thouvenel, who fired the bullet which killed 42-year-old Thierry Unik during a robbery at the Unik jewellery store, received the heaviest sentence: life imprisonment with a minimum of 22 years. Thouvenel, aged 40, has always admitted to having taken part in the robbery and to firing the bullet which killed the store owner, but has always maintained that it was an accident. “He is not a killer; there was no element of intent,” said his lawyer Fabien Collado, who also described the group of men as amateurs. Grabsi Yassine received a 15 year sentence for his part in the robbery, Natalino Semedi Cabral 12 years, and Dafri Hafid 10 years. The incident occurred on the evening of 26th November 2011 when the armed

LIVE-FOOTAGE SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS ARE GRADUALLY BEING ROLLED OUT ACROSS NICE identifying traffic offences and automatically sending out fines. The cameras transmit live footage to a central operating office and when an offence is spotted being committed the number plate is recorded and sent to a national office which holds details of car registrations nationwide. A letter and fine is then sent to the address to which the car is registered. The City of Nice is using the cameras to fight against traffic offences such as double-file parking, running red lights and tailgating, as well as other minor infractions which either pose a threat to other motorists or pedestrians, or result in poor traffic flow.

BOOSTING YOUR SECURITY O

ver the past year, France has been at a heightened level of security due to a surge in terrorism threats, and it has brought the issue of personal security to the forefront of many people’s minds. As a result, an increasing number of residents and visitors are employing the services of private security companies to protect their families, property and business interests. The RT MAGAZINE spoke with SRX Commercial Director Gareth Nesbit about security needs in the French Riviera and Monaco, and what services are available. RT Magazine: How serious is the security threat here on the Côte d’Azur and in the Principality? Gareth Nesbit: There is a threat to wealthy people everywhere they go, and here is no different. But affluent areas frequented by high net worth people always come with a far higher threat, which ranges from opportunist low-level criminals to serious organised crime gangs. Itisimportanttounderstandthespecific threats in this region, how historic criminal activity trends work here, and how they evolve. It’s a so-called ‘cat and mouse’ game, always trying to keep clients one step ahead of the bad guys.

What has drawn you to working in this particular region? We started putting together residential security teams for holiday homes, maritime protection teams for yachts, and mobile close protection teams for travelling. We have offices in the UK and Dubai, so it made sense to establish a more permanent base in France where a lot of our clients come for both business and pleasure. Who are your clients? Discretion is an integral part of our ethos, so we never discuss details of any of our clients, who range from celebrities and elite sporting teams to very private families and companies in various sectors. How is SRX different to other security companies? We are a boutique security company, which means each client liaises directly with our top level management for a very personal service. Providing security is more than donning a t-shirt with ‘security’ printed on the back. Our personnel are highly trained and experienced, with backgrounds in elite units of the British Military, and are all selected based on their skill sets, languages and personalities to ensure they integrate seamlessly with different clients.

Which security solutions do you offer? We offer full packages from A-Z of security. This might typically range from physical close protection (such as traditional style body guards) to technical security (such as secure mobile phones) or even in a consultancy role for a new property, following a security breach, or when a specific threat has been received. Often a client will want a very discreet and ‘covert’ security team, who offers a high level of protection but without being overly imposing, whilst other clients might demand more of a ‘show of force’. Packages are adapted to the client’s needs. How can you ensure the safety of your clients? People think it’s about having big guys who are trained in hand-to-hand combat. But the reality is, these skills are only ever used as a last resort and good close protection means physical conflict is extremely rare. Ultimately, our personnel are prepared to put themselves in danger for the client, but good security is about dealing with a threat before it materialises. Deterrents are a massive part of the capability, so clients who can demonstrate to the criminals that they have addressed their security requirements will often be crossed off the list of potential targets.

MONEY NEWS Make the

most of the current economic climate WITH THE PROSPECT OF GREECE LEAVING THE EUROZONE after increasing

pressure from the European Central Bank, what does the future hold for the euro? Well nobody has a crystal ball, but if we were to face a Greece exit or “Grexit” as it has become known, this could have a huge impact on the markets and send the euro tumbling! German Chancellor Angela Merkel is remaining defiant, insisting that a Grexit would not destabilise the Eurozone, and to some extent, certainly from a currency point of view, she is right – a lot of the uncertainty is already priced in which we can see from the recent fall in the single currency. However, it’s not just the euro under pressure at the moment – the pound is also out of favour with investors ahead of the UK elections on 7th May. Another hung parliament will weaken the currency and we could see GBP/USD continuing its downtrend – great for US investors buying in France or the UK but not so much the other way round! Five years ago, one euro would buy $1.34 – today it is only worth $1.08. Given the expected increased volatility in the currency markets in the coming weeks, now is certainly an important time to seek advice from the money experts. GBP/EUR is currently at €1.40 to the pound – a level not seen since before the 2008 crisis when it came perilously close to reaching parity (£1 = €1). Essentially, this means that purchasing a property now, compared to December 2008, is 40% cheaper.

Banks are an expensive way of transferring funds and they can charge hefty fees or take a large commission. Additionally, and importantly, they tend to provide just one rate for the entire day, and we all know that rates move over 24 hours. Not to mention the challenge of trying to speak to someone on the phone. That’s why choosing a money exchange specialist makes better sense. Here’s a quick look at what you should be considering: A forward rate – Allows you to capitalise on a current favourable rate even if you don’t need the currency straight away. (Imagine those happy Brits who fixed at €1.30 in October 2008!) A market order – Allows you to target a specific range if you are not needing currency urgently – means your personal trader does all the work for you to help you buy at the best time. Regular payment plan – Allows clients to set a rate on a monthly basis which is direct debited from their UK account straight into the French account – ideal for mortgage and pension transfers.

UNDERSTANDING INTERNATIONAL INSURANCE Leave nothing to chance when heading to a foreign country

ASN has been handling the needs and interests of expatriates in Switzerland and abroad for more than 20 years. Whether you are looking to relocate to another country or are in need of insurance coverage for you and your family here in France, ASN provides expert solutions thanks to their expansive network of specialists. Lucien Héritier, head of customer support at ASN, has answered some common questions about insurance options… friend who is self-employed recently suffered a serious accident and is unable to work. But he says he isn’t worried because he has loss of income insurance. What is this and why should I consider signing up for it? Loss of income insurance ensures that an entire wage or a pre-defined sum for a set peri od (usually up to two years) is covered, so that the usual standard of living can be continued. We can also provide

MAY

solutions for wage payment up to the age of retirement, usually 65 years. I have just had my first child and am now starting to look at life insurance. Why is this recommended and is it expensive? If the insured person dies during the term of his/her life insurance coverage, beneficiaries are paid a predefined sum. With this insurance, parents are assured that upon their death, their children will be financially stable. The premium depends on many factors such as health status, leisure habits, smoking habits, etc. Life insurance premiums are generally affordable – for example, you can receive significant benefits by paying only 150€ per month. I see that ASN offers savings insurance and a retirement plan. Are they not the same? And which one should I choose? There are certainly some parallels between these two insurance solutions, but they will differ according to the insured person’s stage of life. While retirement plans are specifically aimed at financial security following retirement, savings insurances are designed for a shorter period but also for after retirement. There has been an increase in kidnappings and blackmailings in recent years. Can I insure myself or my family against these risks? The events that have occurred across the globe recently have certainly increased feelings of discomfort and insecurity. Aside from the financial risk, there is also the fear of imprisonment and loss of confidence. It is immensely important to have the right partners and consultants on your side, and ASN provides access to the best experts in this field. Advice and assistance also helps to minimise the risk in advance. Of course, in addition to this, the financial aspect is covered - legal fees, possible ransom money, etc. This insurance can be taken out by individuals and companies alike.

Regardless of government coverage, we recommend insurance coverage that provides access to senior physicians and private hospitals as well as coverage for serious diseases which require a long-term healing process, for example cancer and cardiovascular disease. Why should I choose ASN when searching for the ideal insurance coverage? Whether you need travel insurance, health insurance or a pension plan for your impending stay abroad, our specialists know about the strengths but also the weaknesses of different international insurance firms and their products. ASN always finds the optimal insurance solution for you, fine-tuned to suit your personal life situation. ASN Advisory Services Network AG - Zurich - Switzerland

LOUIS XV GETS A MAKEOVER THE RESTAURANT WHERE CHEF ALAIN DUCASSE won three Michelin stars for the first time, Louis XV in Monaco, reopened in April with a new look as well as a refreshed menu and an addition to its name. Now known as Le Louis XV – Alain Ducasse à l’Hôtel de Paris, the restaurant maintains its 19th century charm but there is now a discreet contemporary touch. “It was time,” Ducasse told the New York Times. “One day I walked into the dining room and it struck me as looking a little faded and old-fashioned.” “The opulence of the room had become grandmotherly,” said architect Sanjit Manku, “so we removed the oil paintings and marble busts.” At the restaurant’s centre is a circular, open wooden service area where staff are on show performing their tasks. “A meal at this restaurant

The ultimate answer to a stressfree lifestyle

A

s children of the information and technology age, we’ve been granted access to perhaps the greatest moment in time to be alive, but also the most stressful and overwhelming as we strive beyond what’s ever been considered possible. Have you noticed how huge the gap is between what’s said to be possible and what you actually get to live on a day-to-day basis? In all the glory, success and prosperity that you’re supposed to be enjoying given this dawning of a new world, it appears that time, happiness, balance, love and freedom is being held captive by unseen forces that deprive you of the energy, excitement and enthusiasm required to lead a productive, meaningful life. Success, we are told, is what we should all experience, yet in the scramble of trying to manifest this so called success, what’s become of your daily quality of life? Only two questions need priority in your life if you seriously desire a successful and stress-free life: Is your success truly defined by you or are you chasing after what’s expected of you? And is success and successful living your daily reality? These two questions embody everything you need to create a life you absolutely love living that produces meaning, fulfilment, harmony, balance, bliss, beauty and all the riches your heart desires. While many have given up on the idea that life can be enjoyed and lived in absolute freedom, I am inviting you to open yourself up to new possibilities and a greater understanding of the inherent power and capacity that nature secretly placed within you to ensure that even amidst all the chaos and the mad rush of today’s fast- paced world, you still get to come out a shining star and thrive against all odds.

LIFE SUPPORT SURVIVE FRANCE YOUR GUIDE TO EXPAT LIVING Dear Andy, I see the Auto Bleue’s everywhere around Nice. I know what they are but how do they work? Speedy in Sophia Hi Speedy, The Auto Bleue scheme is a quick-rent vehicle option for anyone living or visiting the Nice area of the Riviera. Cars are available from Villefranche sur Mer to Saint Laurent du Var, and they can generally get around 80 kilometres off a full charge. In order to use one you must first sign up with the Auto Bleue centre, located opposite Nice Ville train station. There, you will have to present your driver’s license, a copy of your identification and either a credit card or you bank account details. There is generally a 25€ sign-up fee, but this is often waived due to various promotional initiatives. Then you have two options: a) An abonnement or subscription, or b) an à la carte ‘Liberté’ option. The first directly debits 50€ from your bank account at the end of each month for 10 hours of driving time – but you must commit to being under contract for at least six months. Any time over those 10 hours are billed at 5€ per hour. The second à la carte option does not require a subscription, you can use a car as much or as little as you like, but you are billed 8.50€ per hour. There are four car models. The most popular Peugeot Ion seats four comfortably and has enough trunk space for a day at the beach. The Utilitaire is a two seater van, perfect for moving or big shopping. The third option is the popular Zoe, which is a five-seater, has large trunk space, and is perfect for shopping or touring with the family. Finally, the Mia is a toaster-like small vehicle which seats three and feels a little bit awkward when driving, especially as the driver is situated in a central position. Generally the Zoe or Mia are available Flex or Zen. Zen means that you pick up the car and drop it off at the same spot, Flex enables you to pick it up anywhere, and drop it off anywhere (in a designated zone). All cars are automatic and the service is available completely in English. You pay no insurance or fuel fees, there are designated parking spots all over town and you won’t be burning fossil fuels. So really, what are you waiting for?!

FOSTER CARERS NEEDED SHORT AND LONG TERM ‘LE CHAT LIBRE AZUREEN’ is a wonderful organisation that spays, medically treats, and organises adoptions for hundreds of stray cats which have been abandoned to fend for themselves along the French Riviera. “When a cat has a litter of kittens, their owners often put the mother and her babies into a cardboard box and dump them in a public place - on a road, often on the beach - to meet their fate,” says volunteer Karina Ashton. “My husband and I drive to two beaches every evening, summer and winter, to feed two groups of stray cats who depend on us. We have done this for the past three years and it’s become a valued part of our life here.” “Other members of the charity do the same, all along the French Riviera. Between us we feed 400 stray cats a day!” In the past seven years, the charity has spayed 3,118 cats and found homes for 1,260. Each year, more and more requests are made to the charity for help and they are now in desperate need of assistance.
