Pastor's son-in-law confesses Wojciech Janowski, the son-inlaw of Hélène Pastor, has admitted to ordering the murder of the wealthy Monaco businesswoman and her chauffeur in May. Faced with suspicious movements on his bank account and discriminating statements by alleged accomplices, it appears Janowski was backed into a corner. The 64-year-old is the husband of Hélène Pastor's daughter, Sylvia RatkowskiPastor. After a number of days in police custody, Janowski confessed to his “involvement” in ordering the murder of his mother-in-law as well her chauffeur Mohamed Darwich, to "avoid making it obvious that the heiress was the only target", reported the AFP. Janowski's personal trainer, who has not yet been named, is believed to have been the middleman for his employer, allegedly hiring the gunmen who carried out the attack, as well as negotiating the price of the contract - around 140,000 euros, according to RTL. Janowski was arrested on 23rd June after police identified unusual dealings in his bank accounts and his links to the "middleman" police believed had hired the suspects who carried out the deadly attack on 6th May. Big brother aint so bad The biggest news story in June was undoubtedly the arrest of Monaco resident and Polish national Wojciech Janowski, the son-in-law of Hélène Pastor. Not only was the shooting death of the billionaire heiress shocking enough, but the possibility that a family member - her daughter's husband - could be behind the callous attack is something you expect only to watch in a Hollywood film. Interesting also is the way police were able to piece together what happened that fateful day on 6th May. Thanks to extensive CCTV cameras throughout Nice, investigators documented almost every movement of the man who shot Mrs Pastor and her chauffeur, as well as his accomplice. The installation of surveillance cameras has been a big priority for Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi - there are now more than 400. Walking the streets of Nice feels very much like a 'Big brother is watching’ experience. But there are moments when the benefits outweigh the negatives, and this is one of those times. Of course, Estrosi was quick to congratulate himself on how his surveillance cameras lead to the arrests. Playing a part in a high profile murder case is just another string in Estrosi's bow as he heads towards the presidential race of 2017. The question now is, when the U.S. releases its big budget film, who will play Mayor Christian Estrosi?

Le Pen loses EU parliament power
“Europe must be transformed” Eric Ciotti, Member of Parliament and President of the General Council of the Alpes Maritimes, tells The Riviera Times his hopes for Europe
Front National is denied a voice as the far right fails to unite
F
ront National plans to dismantle the EU were dealt a major blow after Marine Le Pen failed to gain enough allies to qualify as a single caucus in the new European parliament. Despite winning a surprising number of seats in the EU elections, fears that the far right party could wield significant powers in the European Union have abated, for now. France's Front National (FN), Holland's Freedom Party, Austria's Freedom Party, Italy's Lega Nord and Belgium's Flemish separatist Vlaams Belang had until Tuesday 24th June to form a caucus of at least 25 MEPs from at least seven countries. While they managed to get the MEPs, the parties fell short on the number of countries. Just before the deadline, the FN issued a statement saying it would fail to meet the requirement because it had refused to ally itself with parties with "incompatible" values. Marine Le Pen and Geert Wilders, from the Dutch far right party, said they chose not to collaborate with a new
extreme right party in Poland, the Polish New Right Congress. Not only is the party viewed as anti-Semitic, it advocates abolishing women's voting rights. The party also clashes with Le Pen's and Wilders' views on immigration from Eastern Europe. "We have no group, for the time being at least," Florian Philippot, the party's vice president, told Reuters. "But our deputies, who are more numerous than any other party in the French delegation, will be there to defend France under any circumstances, with or without a group." The EU elections in May added 21 seats to the three the FN already had in the European Parliament. The far right party's 24 MEPs make it the most powerful French party in European politics, over the UMP's 20 and the Socialist Party's 13. In the Alpes Maritimes, the FN beat the UMP by 5% in Nice, 2.5% in Cannes, 8% in Grasse and 12% in Menton, while having a 10% lead on the centre right party in the Var . The FN's success received extensive media coverage, with

some calling it an "earthquake" (CNN, Le Figaro), a "reckoning" (RFI), and a "bombshell" (La Repubblica). Speaking shortly after the EU election, Le Pen said: "We have absolutely no worries that we will be able to form a future group." If Le Pen had managed to achieve this, she could have received up to 22 million euros additional funding for running costs, as well as speaking time and committee positions. But only members of political parties which are in an official group are allowed to put forward amendments to legislation. The Front National said it hoped "very soon" to form a "solid, powerful and credible alliance". In Nice, the National Front is fast becoming the 'less than united front', as inhouse sparring over who should lead the local FN group lead to five members being ejected from the extreme right party and forbidden from acting under the terms 'National Front', 'Nice Bleu Marine' or 'Riviera Bleu Marine'. Estrosi’s presidential plans M AYOR OF NICE Christian Estrosi has publicy declared his intention to run for president of France in 2017. Following the resignation of UMP leader Jean-Francois Cope, Estrosi confirmed to Le Monde on 13th June that he will not immediately be putting himself forward for party leadership. Instead, he is focusing solely on the primaries which could place him as the UMP candidate for the presidential elections in 2017. The future of the UMP party, according Estrosi, should take on a Gaulist approach, which has an emphasis on the grandeur of France - its status as a world military and political power. It is this status, argues Estrosi, that has been eroded by the current government. However, as a supporter of Sarkozy, the 59-year-old also made it clear that he is still willing to back the former president if he runs in the next election. So long as his beliefs are in line with Estrosi's. "It is important that he makes his intentions known in the coming weeks," said Estrosi. "We cannot spend the next three years wondering what he will do." J

Monaco rejoices as palace announces pregnancy The question on everyone’s lips now: is it one baby or two?
M
onaco is gearing up for some serious celebration at the end of the year following the news that Princess Charlene is pregnant. While much of the media is remarking upon the fact that it has been three years since the couple married - a relatively long time when it comes to producing an heir followers of the Grimaldi family have actually been waiting far longer for the 53-year-old Prince to announce a legitimate successor. On 30th May the palace released a brief statement, saying, "T.S.H the Prince and the Princess of Monaco are delighted to announce the pregnancy of H.S.H. Princess Charlene. The birth is expected at the end of the year." The official press release is carefully worded to avoid any mention of "a baby" or "babies". So, it is not surprising that the media jumped on a Tweet by South African Derek Watts - a TV personality and friend of the princess's father - claiming the couple is expecting not one baby, but two. "My old bulawayo schoolmate Mike Wittstock has phoned to say his daughter is pregnant with twins. Congrats Princess Charlene and Albert!" wrote Watts. The Tweet was removed soon after and the palace is yet to confirm or deny the rumour. The international media appear to be on a twin bandwagon at the moment. Just before the Monegasque pregnancy was announced, a story had taken off about Kate Middleton being pregnant with twins. That rumour was quickly dispelled however after the Duchess of Cambridge was snapped consuming shots of whiskey with her husband
AKRIS Princess Charlene, who looked stunning at the Rose Ball in March, will give birth by the end of the year, according to the Prince’s Palace
Prince William at a distillery in Scotland. But there is no doubting it, everyone loves a royal pregnancy. And if the birth of the future King of England is anything to go by, the Principality is in for intense international attention at the end of the year. Journalists and paparazzi camped outside St. Mary's Hospital in London for days before Prince George Alexander Louis was presented to the world in 2013. Will they show the same enthusiasm for the future prince of Monaco? Monegasque tradition When Prince Albert was born on 14th March 1958, there was a 101-gun salute, but all didn't exactly go to plan.
"In spite of elaborate arrangements made for announcing the birth, the world learnt about the baby's arrival when a woman at a palace window shouted to waiting journalists: 'It's a boy, it's a boy'," wrote the BBC at the time. Prince Rainier later broadcast an address to the nation announcing the Crown prince's birth. A public holiday was declared and six prisoners in Monaco's jail were pardoned. Prince Albert automatically took precedence over his oneyear-old sister, Princess Caroline. If Princess Charlene is to have twins later this year, and one is male and the other female, by order of primogeniture the boy would be next in line to the throne,

regardless of who was delivered first. Then that child will replace Princess Caroline Prince Albert's older sister - as heir. Half-siblings The Prince already has two other children - 10-year-old Alexandre Coste, born to Togolese air hostess Nicole Coste, both of whom live in Villefranche, and 22-year-old Jazmin Grace Grimaldi, daughter of Tamara Rotolo and currently residing in the US. Both children were only relatively recently legitimised by Prince Albert and while out-of-wedlock children are not in the line of succession to the Monegasque throne according to Article 10 of the Constitution of Monaco, as amended on 2nd April 2002, they are heirs to Prince Albert's personal fortune. Mum's the word Princess Charlene's passion for children, their health and happiness, is very evident, particularly through her foundation, which is devoted to water safety and teaching children how to swim. The former Olympic swimmer recently received an award as 'Champion of Children' from actress Reese Witherspoon at a Beverly Hills ceremony in recognition of her work, and she is often making appearances at Monegasque schools. "My foundation is about children, who can become great adults if we collectively show them the way forward with strong values and solidarity," says the South African-born princess. No doubt her children will inherit some of Charlene's sporty attributes and receive plenty of healthy encouragement from both her parents, as well as an adoring principality. Cassandra Tanti

History entwined with magic Pastor’s son-in-law confesses to ordering hit E Exclusive summer concerts at Monaco's Cour d'Honneur
Continued from front page...
Sylvia Ratkowski-Pastor was also arrested along with 20 other people. She was released on 25th June as Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin reportedly revealed that she had been held only to help police with their investigation. Timeline of events "I want to acknowledge the cross-operational work of the municipal police in looking at 113 hours of video extracted from 43 CCTV cameras in the city of Nice," said Mayor Christian Estrosi. According to the prosecutor, CCTV footage has been integral in tracking the movements of the two men accused of direct involvement in the double murder. They are known to have travelled from Marseille to Nice by train and took separate taxis to the Archet Hospital, where Hélène Pastor was visiting her son Gildo. Following the ambush attack in Pastor's car, during which the shooter used a sawn-off shotgun, they fled by bus and then negotiated with a taxi driver before taking a 500
euro trip back to Marseille. The men have been identified as 31-year-old Alhair Hamadi, born in Marseille of Comoros Islands origins, and Samine Said Ahmed, aged 24, born in the Comoros in the Indian Ocean. Both have criminal records. Who is Wojciech Janowski? Aside from his wealthy wife, Wojciech Janowski is a prominent figure in Monaco. He was a Polish Honorary Consul in Monaco and has held various management positions in SBM. He often worked with the Chamber of Commerce and is the CEO of the nanotechnology company Firmus SAM2 3. He is also well known for his charitable activities; most notably he was one of two founders of the recently established Monaco Against Autism (MONAA). In 2010, he was awarded the Legion of Honour by the then French president Nicolas Sarkozy for his charity work. He is married to 52-year-old Sylvia Pastor, daughter of the sole remaining heir to the
Pastor fortune, which is estimated at around 19 billion euros. Motive Speculation as to a motive revolves largely around the reported reduction in allowance of 500,000 euros per month which Madame Pastor gave to her children. However, the prosecutor has refused to confirm this. A family tragedy The day before news of the confession was revealed, Hélène Pastor's sister-in-law Catherine broke the family's silence about the "Greek tragedy", as she called it, that has taken over her family in recent months. She said that Hélène Pastor had not been fond of Janowski and that following Sylvia's marriage, "Hélène wasn't too happy, but it was her daughter's choice." At the time of going to press, charges had yet to be laid. For updates on the case, visit www.rivieratimes.com and like The Riviera Times on Facebook. Cassandra Tanti
SBM finally reports positive growth Dogged by significant fiscal losses following online gambling investments, Monaco’s biggest source of employment, Société des Bains de Mer (SBM), has released its most successful financial report in four years. The group has revealed figures for the financial year 2013-2014 showing a turnover which is up 48.4 million euros from 424.1m to 472.5million. After three years of significant net losses, with last year’s numbers showing a deficit of 50.7 million euros, there is now a net profit of 17.3 million. Though SBM is a publiclytraded company, 69.5% is controlled by the Principality. This positive development is
largely due to an 18% increase in the company’s income from its gaming and gambling ventures, as well as a smaller rise of 2% for its portfolio of hotels. Despite huge improvements, BetClic is still proving an attenuating factor in relation to the company’s profit potential. The online gambling investment has again constituted a loss for the company, but at a cost of only 3.8million euros it shows impressive progress when compared with last year’s 23.4 million. The chairman of the board of directors, Jean-Luc Biamonti, was tentatively optimistic at a press conference on 3rd June when he announced: "After years of negative results, we
have succeeded in reversing the trend." Nonetheless, the company continues an operating loss, running at -11.8 million euros this year. SBM, which celebrated its 150th anniversary last July, also announced in the wake of these figures that one of its prime properties, the Hôtel de Paris, will close entirely on 6th October to accommodate three months of renovations, with a partial reopening in January. Extensive internal work will continue for an estimated four years as part of a controversial revitalisation project that includes the demolition of the Sporting d’Hiver. Elizabeth Brauders

very summer in July and August, a special musical tradition is carried on in the beautiful setting of the Cour d'Honneur at the Monegasque Palace. It was Prince Rainier III who reinstated the concerts in 1959 after learning of an ancient Grimaldi practice that allowed coveted courtyard entry to prestigious soloists and groups of musicians, enabling them to perform for the royal family. The Prince chose summer as the most atmospheric time to hold these nowlegendary performances, and he has been fondly remembered amongst the musical community, national and international, ever since. In the last half century, the concerts have hosted the greatest musicians of their times, from prestigious soloists to renowned groups and orchestras, including Monaco's own Philharmonic Orchestra of Monte Carlo. The carefullychosen programmes are composed of some of the most beautiful classical pieces ever written, with modern pieces gaining ground in recent years. This season the scores have been chosen by prestigious musicians including Gianluigi Gelmetti, the artistic and musical director of the Monte Carlo Orchestra, and Kazuki Yamada, a visiting conductor from Japan. Mr Yamada will also return for the 2014-2015 winter season in the role of

Chief Guest Conductor, as the personal choice of both Princess Caroline and Mr. Gelmetti. Under the patronage of Prince Albert II and presided over by the Princess of Hanover, the orchestra has strived to commemorate its heritage and preserve its authenticity, at the same time as remaining a dynamic and modern force, always looking to the future. This philosophy is evident in the diverse pieces to be performed this year, which will impress experienced musicians just as much as those who've never played a note. The programme presents a variety of musical genres, including more traditional choices such as the concertos of Beethoven and Rachmaninoff alongside film scores
by modern composers like Nino Rota and Maurice Jarre. The concerts will also feature a healthy French influence, drawing on the repertoires of Debussy and Ravel for the strikingly memorable Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune and Boléro. The opening night's performance will be sure to delight with Berlioz's magnificent Symphonie Fantastique, showcasing the composer's incredible gift for instrumentation. In line with the grandeur of the surroundings, the concerts are strictly black tie events ensuring an atmosphere of luxury and opulence, while the outdoor summer setting makes for a touch of magic. Emotional and powerful
Les Ballets de Monte Carlo will perform some exciting pieces this July. Photo: Hans Gerritsen
L
es Ballets de Monte Carlo has announced its summer programme for July featuring two different shows with interpretations of works from four different dance artists, chosen and arranged by the company's artistic director and chief choreographer JeanChristophe Maillot. Despite the number and diversity of artists involved, each of the pieces is connected by a distinctive style of ballet that is both visually strong and emotionally powerful. The first show in this l’Eté Danse series takes place from 16th to 19th July, with the dance company interpreting three demanding pieces within one presentation. William Forsythe's New Sleep is a challenging performance of complicated pointe work,
difficult hyperextensions and contortions, and a unique balance of darkness and the absurd. These dates will also see the première of Marco Goecke's Sigh, created especially for the Monte Carlo company by the German artist. The final piece is Petite Mort, choreographed by the Czech contemporary dance master Jirí Kylián. The work features the slow movements from Mozart’s famous piano concertos numbers 21 and 23. From 24th to 27th July the programme will change to focus on one of the artistic director's own creations. Maillot's piece Choré draws heavily on the golden age of Hollywood's musical comedies for inspiration. Incorporating distinctive elements like the smooth elegance of Fred
Astaire and the energetic precision of Gene Kelly's movements, the ballet explores dance as a connection between the past and present. First performed by the company in 2013 to celebrate Maillot's 20th anniversary as its head, the piece is a fitting blend of homage to a classical past and a modern, experimental step forward. The allimportant musical backdrop is provided by a range of composers including Niceborn percussionist Daniel Ciampolini and musical pioneer John Cage. The performances will take place in the Salle Garnier at Monte Carlo's Opera House, with tickets priced from 10 to 33 euros. Reservations: www.balletsdemontecarlo.com Tel: 00 377 98 06 28 28.

International Organ Festival Monaco welcomes world-renowned artists for month-long event
T
he 9th annual Monaco International Organ Festival will run on Sundays from 6th July to 17th August, featuring musical talent from all over the world. The festival will be opened by Swedish performer Gunnar Idenstam, with his show entitled The Organ and Dance. Trained in the French tradition, Idenstam enjoys pushing the organ beyond these confines, aiming alternately for Baroque, rock and symphonic styles. He was awarded the Grand Prix for improvisation at Chartres in 1984. The second concert will be given by the Canadian Philippe Bélanger, an organ maker as well as peformer. Considered a more traditional artist, Bélanger was named official organist at St. Paul's church in Aylmer, Quebec at the age of nine. Many other posts followed before he won a national competition at just 27 years of age, becoming the organist of Saint Joseph's Oratory in Montreal. The performances of July 20th and 27th will see France's homegrown talent take to the stage, first Vincent Dubois with the symphonic organists of France, and then an evocative performance on the theme of 'Occident meets Orient' by

Michel Bourcier. For the special Young Talent evening on 3rd August, one of Bourcier's own students will play. Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas, at 24years-old, has already collected an extensive string of awards, including last year's first prize at the Xavier Darasse International Organ Competition. A performance by Tobias Willi, the Swiss musician and professor of organ and chamber music at the University of Zurich, follows before the festival returns to a French performer to close the event. Philippe Lefebvre is one of the greatest organists of our time, holding the position of official organist at the famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris as well as professor of improvisation at the Paris Conservatoire. Mr Lefebvre's performance will be dedicated to Pierre Cochereau, one of his teachers and predecessor as organmaster at Notre Dame. In 1976, Cochereau himself performed at Monaco to inaugurate the magnificent Boisseau organ. The performances will take place in the Cathedral of Monaco at 5pm, entry is free. Brad Pitt sets his sights on Provence red
M
ove over Côte de Provence rosés, Brad Pitt plans on making make a revolutionary Provence red at his Miravel vineyard in the Var. The Hollywood actor recently revealed that winemaking has reshaped his very identity, and he now considers himself capable of producing that elusive, fine local red. Speaking to the US magazine Wine Spectator in June, Brad Pitt, who bought the Miraval Estate winery with fiancée Angelina Jolie in 2012, explained that he approached this venture with the same determination as a Hollywood flick. “For better or worse, given my

compulsive nature, if we are going to be in the wine business, let’s make the best wine we can,” the 50-year-old said. “I asked the question, ‘Why can’t we make world class wine in Provence?’ Let’s approach it like a film, and let’s make something we can be proud of and all people can enjoy.” Of course, Provence rosés are already world class. But with fifth-generation winemaker Marc Perrin on their team, the Pitt-Jolie dynamic duo are definitely off to a good start. Their first 6,000 bottles, officially known as Jolie-Pitt & Perrin Côte de Provence Rosé Miraval, sold out within five

hours of being offered online in France last March – a response which no-doubt fuelled Pitt’s new-found passion. “I’m a farmer now. I love learning about the land and which field is most suitable for which grape, the drama of September and October: Are we picking today? Where are the sugar levels? How is the acidity? Is it going to rain? It’s been a schooling for me. In the off months, I enjoy cleaning the forest and walking the land.” The sprawling Château Miraval estate is situated in a valley at an altitude of 350 metres, where the vines “enjoy warm sunny days and cool
nights, natural clay and chalk soils, plenty of water and organic farming practices,” according to the estate. Clearly, these are great conditions for rosé, but do they suit red wine? Pitt seems to think so. “What really interests me now are the reds. It’s generally believed that Provence is not capable of producing a fine red. … I, with Marc and Pierre [Perrin], would like to create a wine which utilises the best attributes of our terroir, and outside the restrictions of the AOC. We envision a superb Provence red. Give us seven years.” Cassandra Tanti

An insider’s perspective The man behind the famous Sporting Summer Festival
Jean-René Palacio has been the Artistic Director of the Sporting Summer Festival for 15 years. The event continues to lure some of the best names in the music industr y – Robbie Williams, Rihanna, Rod Stewart – to one of the most intimate concert halls in the world. The Riviera Times spoke to Jean-René about how he manages to secure the performers and why he has the best job in the world.
W
here does your interest in music come from? Like Rod Stewart, I was not good at football or rugby. I have been a music fan from a very early age and my goal was to find a job that was closest to a musician as possible. So when I finished university I started as a stage hand, then managed to find jobs within the music industry. Do you play an instrument? I was a good bass player for a garage band. Unfortunately I don’t have the time now to play, but I collect vintage guitars and amps. How do you decide who will perform for the Sporting Summer Festival? Most importantly, the entertainment programme is designed around the Casino and its gamblers. We cater for a large international audience, coming from the south of France, England and Russia. When they are here we also want them to enjoy SBM’s other facilities, like the restaurants. So my job is to have the best artists for the largest audience possible, with new talent like Lana del Rey through to those with long careers like Elton John and Rod Stewart. Does it take much convincing for them to perform in Monaco? Not really. At the start, Robbie Williams was surprised to come here but he said this was one of the best concerts of his tour. The artists enjoy it because there is such close proximity between them and the audience. For the dinner and show, the maximum capacity is 900 people - it is a small venue. These artists perform in an arena before tens of thousands of people, then they come here and play for a few hundred. And it is Monte Carlo – people are in suits, it is a high level, it is unique.
As artistic director, you get to meet some of the most famous international performers … surely you must have the best job in the world? Every morning I say to myself that I have the best job in the world, and I thank Monaco and SBM for the opportunity. Do you get to socialise with the performers you enlist, for example go out for dinner with Robbie Williams? I can’t share the details. But it was very nice meeting Robbie Williams because he is a really nice man. We gave him an AS

Monaco shirt because he loves football, and he appreciated that. I was really impressed by the human quality of this guy, it’s not just what you read in the papers, he has a really big heart. Who would be the ultimate performer at Sporting Summer Festival? Jimi Hendrix! But seriously, we must always have a dream, and then try and realise that dream. It is Monaco … anything is possible.

A showcase for Monaco’s yachting ambitions
he inauguration of the decade - 4,000 guests including royalty, government officials, members and select media… a ceremony befitting Monaco's prestigious new building, the stunning Monaco Yacht Club. HSH the Sovereign Prince Albert II, accompanied by the royal family and the building's architect Lord Norman Foster, officially opened the new premises on 20th June. It was an historic occasion for the guests, which included the Minister of State Michel Roger, all government ministers, President of the National Council Laurent Nouvion, YCM members (1,300 society members, 66 nationalities), friends of the club from around the world, and all those taking part in the Giraglia Rolex Cup. Proceedings began with the cutting of the ribbon and a blessing bestowed on the building by Monaco's Archbishop Bernard Barsi. Later, to symbolise the continuity between the two buildings, Prince Albert - YCM president for 30 years -
closed the old premises on Quai Antoine 1er by lowering the YCM flag and bringing it across the harbour in a "pointu" (traditional Mediterranean fishing boat) to Quai Louis II where the new building is moored. He was welcomed by HSH Princess Charlene and members of his family, to the cheers of YCM members dressed in formal yachtsmen attire. The harbour's new flagship is also home to the Société Nautique rowing club. "With this architectural masterpiece we wished to affirm Monaco's yachting identity, our ambition being to continue to orient our country's future prosperity towards the sea," he added. The esteemed British architect Lord Norman Foster (pictured above next to Prince Albert), famous for his hi-tech approach to the environment, was chosen by the Monegasque government to design the YCM's new establishment. "When designing this building, which is open to the sea, at the centre of the harbour and embracing the city, we wanted to preserve the tra-

ditional yachting spirit so dear to the Principality," said Lord Foster, adding that if this building was a real liner he would call her Free Spirit. Sleek and elegant with an overall length of 200m, the building blends harmoniously into the site, and was built in partnership with Monaco architect Alexandre Giraldi. "A stunning showcase, the building symbolises Monaco in the third millennium, looking ahead to the future and the sea," reads a statement from the club. The Principality now has a tool to develop and promote Monaco's position as the 'world capital of yachting'. It aims to achieve a series of initiatives including the establishment of a Yachting Cluster (a focus for improving competitiveness), setting up a training centre issuing internationally recognised professional certificates, and increasing the number of regattas and nautical events. Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar Saint Jean Cap Ferrat based young Iranian artist taking confident steps in contemporary art world
Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar may be the new kid on the block, but his works have already been sold by Christie's auction house, alongside those by the reputable Parviz Tanavoli, Shirin Neshat, Farhad Moshiri, Reza Derakhshani, Charles Hossein Zenderoudi and many more. The latest to sell was his portrait of Soraya Esfandiari Bakhtiari - a member of the artist's own family tree and an artwork true to Sassan's signature style. Sassan's understanding of his subjects is based on their physical and mental individualism, as well as occasionally their trace in history. Sassan says his work originates from his direct experience with the world. With his multiple focus, restless drive and democratic approach, Sassan is able to capture the vibrant yet intimate details of his subjects within the genres of portraiture, installations and photography. Born on 1st February 1984 in Paris, Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar was surrounded by the art world from a very early age. With passionate artists for parents, he began taking an interest in painting, installation, photography and sculptural disciplines, over the years developing a deep passion for all. As Sassan grew older, alongside obtaining his academic degrees, he studied and experimented with various mediums in his art studio. In his works, Sassan has developed a distinct approach, which translates the subject in question into a contemporary statement following his aesthetic perception of clean lines and his choices of materials, all while continuously exploring and drawing inspiration from his view of the past and the present.

Sassan, who is currently based in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, has exhibited internationally from Abu Dhabi to the south of France, and currently has selected works on public display at London's award winning art academy Debut Contemporary - one of eight art businesses reshaping the art market globally. Cap-Ferrat by Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar, The Real Me series
Sassan's latest series of works, 'The Real Me', consists of a unique mix of installations
and photography, where he "represents a clear picture of the reality behind most Iranians today, contrary to what the global media tries to portray," says Sassan. "This series of works is a result of my frustration towards the orchestrated brainwash of international media against my fellow nationals." Sassan's work ‘Cap-Ferrat’ from the same series has just been selected by Sotheby's to be put on exhibition in Los Angeles from 15th to 17th September and for auction later in New York at the Sotheby's Contemporary Day Sale on 12th November 2014. Another of his latest body of works, 'A Reason to Fight', is linked to the struggles of Sassan's home country, Iran, against the military coup of Iraq. "This is my representation of the strength and undying values of each Iranian involved in this war, which lasted from September 1980 to August 1988," reveals Sassan. "It is also known as the longest conventional war of the 20th century and the most violent conflict after the 2nd World War." The series, says the artist, has been put together through many months of research and will be exhibited by the internationally renowned Silk Road Gallery in Tehran during December 2014 and January 2015.
An art lovers’ exhibition
i
t is an art exhibition for art lovers; an impressive collection from the private reserves of François Pinault, featuring everything from famous creations to rare pieces; linking past and present, emotion and curiosity.
The ArtLovers exhibition is the Grimaldi Forum's cultural summer highlight. "This is the 6th instalment of a 'Beyond the walls' programme offering a reinterpretation of almost 40 major works of the collection with the underlying theme that art feeds off art, art transforms art," said Catherine Alestchenkoff, director of cultural events at the Grimaldi Forum. The exhibition was devised by Martin Bethenod, director of the Palazzo Grassi Punta della Dogana, and aims to reinterpret the works through their links, explicit or private, to previous pieces. "The continuum between past and present reflects both obvious and more subtle historical differences," explained Alestchenkoff. "Martin Bethenod - curator of the exhibition - insisted that knowledge of the chosen works not be a requirement. The interaction of past and present is not imposed on the visitors. The process is explained but everyone is free to walk through the exhibition as they like and to be aware or not of the comparison between the presented works and the ones they evoke."
Above: Bourgeois Bust, Jeff Koons. Right: Maurizio Cattelan’s work, untitled
To do this, visitors can access a large range of informative tools: explanatory plaques, visual/audio guides, exhibition representatives in each room, an information area at the end of the visit and the distribution of pamphlets in each section. "The diversity of the Pinault collection is significant, with Europe, Asia, America, and the Middle East represented, as well as decades from the 1960s to modern day," said the cultural director. "The range of media chosen is impressive, including paintings, sculptures, installations, videos and pencil drawings."

New routes from Nice with easyJet
E
asyJet is now the largest operating airline at Nice Côte d’Azur airport. The airline has announced the arrival of a third aircraft and four new destinations from Nice, making easyJet the number one carrier at the airport. On 10th June, easyJet revealed that the arrival of the third Airbus A320 aircraft will result in the creation of 37 new direct jobs at the airline base in the airport. The airline has expanded its number of destinations served from Nice from 24 to 28 with new routes to Hamburg, Marrakech, Lisbon and Palermo.
EasyJet marked the occasion with a bike race in the Bag Drop area of the airport. Passengers and passersby were invited to get on an exercise bike and pedal across a virtual easyJet destination map. The fastest cyclists to reach all of the destinations from Nice were entered into a prize draw and the winner was rewarded with flights to any easyJet destination from Nice Côte d’Azur. More than 30.2 million passengers have flown to and from Nice since the airline first launched services in 1996. EasyJet’s four new summer 2014 services from Nice are:

Saint Martin Vésubie lies in the beautiful Mercantour National Park
S
aint Martin Vésubie nestles in the Vésubie valley at the foot of the Mercantour mountain chain, where the Boréon and Madone de Fenestre mountain streams meet. The village is surrounded by a 3,600 hectare forest including that quintessential deciduous alpine conifer, the mélèze, (larch, Larix decidua). Only found above 1,200m, the mélèzes set hillsides on fire in autumn as their needles turn glorious shades of yellow, gold, russet and red. Over 1,100 Saint Martinois live in the commune which covers around 9,700 hectares and lies at altitudes ranging from 715m to 3,120m. The Romans swung by in the days of Augustus and the village remains a popular destination for second homes, although possibly better equipped today to cater for visitors with swimming pool, tennis courts and boulodrome.

On 15th August, for the Feast of the Assumption, and 8th September - the Feast of the Virgin's Nativity, processions of the energetic faithful (and those who just enjoy the walk) climb up to the Madone de Fenestre sanctuary. Medieval traces in the village include remains of the ramparts surrounding the western façade with access through the monumental Sainte Anne gate. The village has its fair share of Penitent chapels (black and white); the altarpiece in the parish church is attributed to the Bréa School, that great family of Niçois primitif painters whose 15th16th century works can be found throughout the country. If you are looking for walls to hang your own art, Jean-Marc Ascione of Agence Mercantour Vésubie says you can buy terraced village houses and, on the outskirts, traditional chalets either in stone or timber. Village houses may have
been divided up into apartments which can sell from 80,000-140,000 euros depending on size and state of repair, he says, quoting a two room 48sqm apartment with terrace and garage in a village centre résidence which sold recently for 112,500 euros. 28,500 euros can buy a top floor 14sqm studio for renovation in a 1920s building with balcony and mountain views. Expect to pay circa 180,000 to 220,000 euros for a whole house; much depends on whether you have an adjoining garden or not but, frankly, with all that stunning scenery who cares? If you do want some land you must look for villas on the outskirts. Saint Martin Vésubie is known as the "Suisse niçoise," explains Mr Ascione. Between the two World Wars it was the summer home of the Niçois bourgeoisie - the agency was founded in 1930 - so you have houses built in the specific style of that period. Other more recent constructions date from the late 1970s onwards. Traditional mountain chalets are built in stone or with stone foundations and upper parts in timber; more recent constructions are entirely in timber. Prices are around 280,000450,000 euros depending on living space, land, and quality of the property. As an example, a five room 118sqm chalet with grounds of 1,291sqm recently sold for 400,000 euros. Most clients - locals or foreigners - are second home purchasers. There is also a good long-term rental market, he says. But whether buying or renting for holiday or full-time use, everyone is looking for calm and tranquillity. Carolyn Reynier

Bringing back structured products to investment offerings
C
CMB, Monaco’s leading local private bank, takes a risks approach Brothers bankruptcy made structured products subject to public scorn as clients discovered risks, they sometimes were not fully aware of, in their portfolios. Since then, structured products experienced several years of "spell in the wilderness". However, with low rates on bonds giving unattractive yields, and an uncertain outlook on equity markets, investors need to find new alternatives in search for yields. This being established, with volatility being at its lowest since 2007, nothing more was needed for the structured products to make a comeback to the front stage of investment offerings. Their ability to build up, with few tools, an infinity of combinations, providing alternatively growth or income, make them appear now and anew as a desirable asset class to own in a portfolio. At CMB, the objective is not to provide clients with the latest fashionable product, but rather to offer the
products that best suit them. The CMB philosophy is to find the most adapted structure given the client's specific profile, needs and view of the market. A risk approach One of the main stakes of this new service is to ensure a strong focus on risks, within a highly heterogenic environment in terms of types of structures encountered. To handle this issue, the CMB structured products solution has primarily a risk approach, which distinguishes capital guaranteed and non capital guaranteed products. This first differentiation will enable conservative clients to avoid investing into any product, where capital is at risk. The degree of complexity of the structure is then taken into account, and can be selected according to the client's financial knowledge. With their private banker's support, they will be able to fully understand the product's mechanism and the different

pay-offs they will get, according to different market scenarios. Only then will the client undertake their investment. The solution that best fits the client's needs Given the extensive universe of the secondary market for structured products, being able to find the perfect fit for the client's needs can appear as looking for a needle in a
haystack. By defining the clients' requests upon key criteria, such as the currency, the underlying, the type of pay-off or even the issuer, CMB is able to find the specific product whose rationale will match or be closest to the client's sensitivity, view of the market and financial objectives. Seizing opportunities The last challenge faced in the
secondary market is the availability of products and the speed at which any interesting product can be sold out. To best seize the opportunities as they arise, CMB will consistently monitor up to date data received from its counterparties, most of them being top tier investment banks. The private client will therefore benefit from this information and remain updated on market opportunities. The structured products service offered by CMB is designed to suit the client's specific needs, to cover his market expectations, with a focus on the expected return and in respect of the client's risk acceptance, completing an already wide range of solutions designed to provide first-class consultancy in private banking. In fact, the line became so successful, it led to the opening of similar regional services throughout the rest of Europe. Emirates now ranks among the top 10 carriers worldwide, linking Europe with emerging countries in Asia and Africa. Emirates hosted a special dinner in Nice on 12th June at the Majestic Hotel restaurant plage, where the company
thanked an audience of people for their continued support over two decades. "After 20 years, Nice is still a key market for Emirates and we continue to grow this important line, particularly for markets like Bangkok, Mauritius and the Seychelles, via our hub of Dubai," said Thierry Aucoc, vice president, responsible for Emriates commercial activities in Europe and Russia. "Nice was one of our first operating regional airports in Europe and its success has opened the path for many other regional destinations throughout the world."
Dominique Thillaud, CEO Nice Côte d'Azur airport, congratulated the airline on their achievement. "20 years already! With more than 190,000 passengers transported last year, we are proud to count Emirates as a leading longhaul operator from Nice. Their strategic and profitable success confirms the potential of Nice to become a long-haul platform - avoiding the inconvenience of transient travel through airport hubs less well positioned.” Thillaud added: "Being connected to the hub of Dubai is also appreciated by our passengers in terms of geo-

Remember Porgy and Bess? Summer time, and the livin' is easy..." Wrong! Summer time and the living can get tense, really tense. The song goes on: Your Daddy's rich and your mamma's good looking…" And that's the trouble. You live on the Riviera, so you must be rich. Your wife mixes with the glitterati, so she must be really good looking and can introduce you to everybody famous. (Well, she is good looking, but that has more to do with the gym than the boutiques of Cannes.). It's July and the relatives come visit - as regularly as the starlings that poop the heck out of our buildings. So what can you do? You can't say no, at least not more than 45 times. And they come anyway. And they stay. Days drag into weeks; they want to be amused, taken out to dinner - which you, of course,
should settle "because you understand tipping in France/ Monaco/Italy!" Well, here are a few hints that might help. First, ditch the Mercedes for a Fiat 500 - get the Gucci edition if your wife complains. Fat Aunty Ann from Atlanta won't like those rear seats. Then, tell them that Prince Albert, Princess Caroline, or Vladimir Putin will be visiting your town sometime between 8am and 10pm tomorrow. That will eat up another day. Next, buy them one of those tourist passes that forces you to visit 110 tourist attractions all over the Riviera for 100 euros. Tell them they'll win a magnum of champagne if they complete 50% in 10 days. Make a deal with your local handy man - make sure he comes every seven days with his paints and brushes. "Oops, so sorry mother-in-law - I
forgot. The only time they could redecorate is this week! Would you like to move to the garden shed? Or try that cute little hotel down the road?" Most important of all, bribe the maitre d' in your favourite eating place. As you sit down, your guest gets the wine list. You look the other way, or search under the table for your sunspecs. Since Uncle Bert did the wine selecting, he is obviously the host and gets the bill. Don't do a thing. Keep talking to someone else. Make sure the waiter stays right alongside Uncle Bert, staring at him like a dog stares when he wants to go out for a walk. It works every time.
Summer is in full swing and so is the International Club of the Riviera! We start our activities for the month on Sunday 6th with a visit to the beautiful medieval village of Entrecasteaux for our annual Ted Dexter Trophy Cricket Match with friends at the Entrecasteaux Cricket Club! This is one of the highlights of our summer program and a fun day out for the ICR, the ECC and cricket enthusiasts. The program starts with a buffet lunch with excellent wines followed by a great 15/15 cricket match in which both ladies and gents join in! We follow with a fun evening of football at the trendy Quai 21 in
Cannes on Sunday 13th to watch the World Cup Final. Included is a superb international buffet dinner with great wines from our 'Vin De Terre' bar! Our signature event for the summer will be on Saturday 2nd August when we invite you to 'A Midsummer Night in Villefranche' hosted by two of our members in their fabulous villa with unbelievable views over Villefranche and Cap Ferrat.
