Editorial by Cassandra Tanti

or almost four years, I have been part of an incredible team here at The Riviera Times – RT Magazine. Together, we have taken this media to new highs, and each day I have been extremely proud to call myself editor of a well respected monthly publication and website. It is therefore with a heavy heart that I announce this to be my final magazine. Now, I won’t lie … I will miss the perks of heading the region’s most popular Englishlanguage publication: the VIP passes, the invitations to cocktails, the opportunity to meet an incredible array of people. I might even miss the monthly ‘print day’, with its late hours and inevitable glass of rosé as the pages are being sent off to the printer.

But one thing is for sure, I will miss coming into the RT office every day and working with the most dedicated, motivated and genuine team that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. However, life is all about taking hold of opportunities and pushing the boundaries, and that is what I will be doing next. I leave the RT in some very capable hands, and I look forward to watching the publication continue on its prosperous path. And to you, readers, I thank you for your continued loyalty and for enjoying my hard work each and every month. For now, I bid you au revoir!

Summer of music

Rock n’ roll, jazz, R&B … take your pick!

It’s a star-studded line-up at this year’s music festivals, with ever yone from Pharrell Williams to Jamie Cullum ready to rock the Riviera. BY CASSANDRA TANTI

ummer rock festivals in the French Riviera and Monaco are a must-see for anyone visiting or living in the region. Why? Because they continue to attract some of the biggest names in the industry, and you just can’t beat the locations – a beautiful garden setting in the centre of Nice, a charming arena in Juan les Pins set against a backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea, an intimate concert hall in Monaco with retracting roof to reveal the night’s stars... here, we like our concerts small, comfortable and high class. One of the biggest stars of the music industry today, Pharrell Williams, will kick off the music festival season this year, playing a headline show at the Sporting Monte Carlo on 22nd June. It’s his first show in this part of the world since his recent ‘Dear G I R L tour’, which saw him captivate sold out crowds all over Europe.

Speaking of sell-out concerts, Tony Bennet and Lady Gaga’s performance on 4th July in Monaco sold out months in advance. But do not fret - there are plenty of other concerts to tempt you this summer. First up is Christine and the Queens. You may not recognise the name but you would definitely have heard her songs. Christine (minus the Queens as she is the only member of the band) is a ground breaking new French singer. In addition to her catchy tunes, she has the androgynous look and moves of Michael Jackson – who admittedly is her idol. Her first album Chaleur Humaine, released in 2014, is already double platinum. She’ll be performing in Monaco on 6th July. Lenny Kravitz will be playing songs from his 10th and latest album, Strut, on 8th June for the Summer Sporting Festival, an album which he is particularly proud of. “I feel as if I’m just starting out and I’m on cruise control,” says Kravitz, who has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. “This album takes me back to the roots of my passion for music, to what I felt when I was in high school. It’s a real rock n’ roll record, raw, with a soul.” Meanwhile, if you’d like to catch Sting in concert and don’t mind paying the 1,000€ ticket price, then book your place at this year’s Monaco Red Cross Gala on Saturday 25th July. You’ll get to listen to one of the greatest artists of our time while rubbing shoulders with celebs, royalty and A-listers. Other standout names hitting the Salle des Etoiles stage in Monaco this year are ZZ Top, Carlos Santana, Anastacia, George Benson and Enrique Iglesias.

What a star-studded line up from SBM. The Nice Jazz Festival programme for 2015 is also a winner. Headlining the popular event on 7th July is Jamie Cullum, whose music and infectious performances have turned him into the most successful British jazz singer of all time. Cullum will be singing hits from his latest album Interlude – his seventh studio recording and the album that Cullum refers to as his first ‘proper jazz record’. Another one to see is American R&B and hip hop singer Lauryn Hill. She will take to the stage in the Albert 1er gardens on 9th July and will likely belt out some of her famous hits including Doo Wop (That Thing), Killing Me Softly, and To Zion. You may know The Roots from the US television show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, on which they were the house band for five years until 2014, before they followed Fallon over to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The Roots are known for a jazzy and eclectic approach to hip-hop and will no doubt be a highlight of the festival when they entertain fans on the 11th. You might as well get the five day Nice Jazz Festival pass and also see American jazz musician Cassandra Wilson, who will be performing songs from her latest album Coming Forth By Day, which The Guardian described as a “radical, big-production remake” of the great Billy Holiday’s music, with “the rhythm section from Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds giving the repertoire a thick-textured, abstract blues-rock feel, while a luxurious strings section embraces the ballads.” And Yael Naïm is not one to miss either on 10th July.

The Israeli-French singer-songwriter rose to fame in 2008 after her hit single ‘New Soul’ was used by Apple in an advertising campaign for its MacBook Air. Asaf Avidan also received plenty of air time for his ‘Reckoning Song (One Day)’. Be amazed by his unique voice which is easily mistaken as coming from a female. And as if all of this wasn’t enough, the Nuits du Sud festival in Vence is also putting up some impressive performers this July, including singer songwriter Beth Hart and reggae musician Jimmy Cliff, best known for his covers of Cat Stevens’ ‘Wild World’ and Johnny Nash’s ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ from the film Cool Runnings. There’s also Mario Biondi – an Italian singer whose deep and warm voice recalls the great interpreters of soul and rhythm and blues music, followed by France’s favourite Englishman, Charlie Winston. And finally, the beautiful Jazz at Juan festival will open with guitar legend Carlos Santana on 10th July, and follow with the likes of Sarah McKenzie, Rhiannon Giddens and Zappa plays Zappa - an American tribute act led by Dweezil Zappa, the eldest son of late American composer and musician Frank Zappa, devoted to performing the music of his father. Rounding it all off is the one and only Lionel Richie on 16th July. And of course 21st June is Fête de la Musique, with concerts of all sorts to be found on every corner, in every city of France – for free. So let this year be your summer of music and take your pick from this impressive line-up of artists!

The power of advertising

Creativity is at the heart of Cannes Lions

“Historians and archaeologists will one day discover that the ads of our time are the richest and most faithful daily reflections any society ever made of its whole range of activities.” –Marshall McLuhan. BY CASSANDRA TANTI

A

dvertising – you either love it or hate it. As the world’s most successful con man in history, George Parker, once said: “The only people who care about advertising are the people who work in advertising.” It has become a multi-billion dollar industry, with every product in existence needing to be communicated in some shape or form. But with so many mediums - television, billboards, radio, Internet, print, emails – the world is becoming increasingly numb to marketing. The need to push the boundaries has never been greater. So, we are witnessing a new era of advertising – one in which brands and products are appealing to our better judgement. They pair themselves with human rights issues (i.e. gay rights), environmental concerns (sustainable practices), or safety messages (child protection), to validate themselves as being socially aware and responsible. It’s the perfect lure for generations X and Y. For example, Nivea’s magazine advertisement in Brazil included a tear-away water-resistant tracking bracelet for kids so they can’t wander off on the beach. Australia’s ANZ Bank turned selected ATM machines into GAYTMs, complete with rainbow colours and sparkles, promoting its sponsorship of the Sydney Mardi Gras and its support of the country’s LGBT community.

But American restaurant chain Chipotle Mexican Grill did it best. Their ‘Back to the Start’ two minute animation featured an emotional cover of Coldplay’s ‘Scientist’ by Willie Nelson, taking viewers through a farmer’s change of heart from running a huge industrialised pig farming compound to one with more sustainable human practices. Then they released ‘Scarecrow’ in 2013 - a short animated film in which Chipotle took on the food practices of big corporates in order to highlight its own sustainably-sourced ethos. Sales went through the roof. But it also got people thinking (if you haven’t seen them, do yourself a favour and check them out on Youtube). For all its intentions, advertising not only has the power to boost revenue but also to facilitate change – be it social, environmental or technical. That’s why all of the above campaigns have won awards at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity - because they are nothing short of genius. “Some of the work entered is using technology to amazing results,” Philip Thomas, CEO of the Cannes Lions, told RT Magazine. “A 3D printer that was taken to a war-torn refugee camp to print a mechanical arm (Project Daniel), an interactive 3D model designed to look like a 10-year-old Filipino girl which went on to catch 1,000 online sexual predators (Sweetie), and the world’s first billboard that lets you

swipe your credit card to donate to charity (The Social Swipe). This is the sort of thing that we’re starting to see at Cannes Lions now, which before the technology just wouldn’t have been possible.” Inspired by the Cannes Film Festival, Cannes Lions began in 1954 as the International Advertising Film Festival in Venice; the lion of Piazza San Marco inspiring the Lion trophy and the eventual name change. After alternating between Venice and Cannes, the event settled in the latter in 1984 and is now the largest gathering of worldwide advertising professionals, designers, digital innovators and marketers. Every year in June, around 11,000 delegates from 90 countries visit the festival to celebrate the best of creativity in brand communication, discuss industry issues and network with one another. Thousands of ads and marketing campaigns from all over the world are showcased and judged. Now, a new category has been created to specifically recognise those who use the power of advertising for good. “This year we have introduced The Glass Lion as the Lion for Change - it recognises work that challenges gender bias and shatters stereotypical images of both men and women,” revealed Thomas. “Our hope is that this award will evolve and grow to reflect other issues affecting the industry.” The seven-day event also serves to enlighten a new

generation of creative minds, with more than 200 worldclass speakers providing inspiration. This year they include: Dave Alpert - Executive Producer for The Walking Dead, Christiane Amanpour – host of CNN’s Amanpour programme, Matt Biespiel - Global Brand Development at McDonalds Corporation, Kim Kardashian West, Digital Prophet at AOL David Shing, Musician Marilyn Manson, Chef Jamie Oliver, and the legendary Pharrell Williams, to name but a few. Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity will take place from 21st to 27th June at the Palais des Festivals.

The animated feature for Chipotle Mexican Grill, created by Moonbot Studios, went on to win a number of awards.

Villa E-1027

s our small entourage of architects, admirers of Eileen Gray and journalists walk down the half-kilometre path towards Villa E-1027 for a special viewing, we hear stories about the iconic Irish designer who became a pioneer in modern architecture. In the sky above, a helicopter is circling incessantly between the property and the train station of Roquebrune Cap Martin, carting materials from the white avant-garde villa. “Eileen Gray had to make do without helicopters,” our guide tells us. “When the villa was built at the end of the 1920s, materials had to be trolleyed in on the tracks at night when no trains ran.” Indeed, the land is situated on an isolated, steep, rocky outcrop descending through lush vegetation to the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. Our guide is Paris-based Englishman Michael Likierman, a long-running businessman in France. He chairs the Cap Moderne Association, which comprises this villa, a log cabin created by the legendary Le Corbusier (Le Cabanon), L’Etoile de Mer restaurant, and five camping units, also designed by Le Corbusier. While blending perfectly with this contemporary surround, Villa E-1027 is in stark contrast to the extravagant, charming Provençal homes that fill the Riviera coastline. With its flat roof, the property is pieced together in different sized blocks and stands on reinforced concrete stilts. You can only imagine the gasps of disbelief upon its completion in 1929. The interior is as ground breaking as the exterior: folding glass patio doors (which were unheard of at the time), mood wall lighting, extensive use of skylights, a glass spiral tower marking the stairs to the roof, sharp edges, and bold geometric shapes and patterns. Yet there is a smooth transition between all the rooms, which are not particularly large. “She did not like boundaries,” says Denis, a neighbour and member

of the Cap Moderne Association. The rooms have been faithfully reconstructed from photos and feature elegant yet unpretentious furniture designed by Eileen Gray; reproduction pieces which are still very popular today, like the E-1027 side table, Blackboard Rug, Rivoli Table, and of course her famous Bibendum Chair - one of the 20th century’s most recognisable furniture designs. The villa is a celebration of Eileen Gray, who was born in Ireland in 1878 and grew up in London. She was one of the first women admitted to the Slade School of Art and in the early 1920s Gray opened a small shop in Paris to sell her work and that of her artist friends. Persuaded by Romanian architect and magazine editor Jean Badovici, she turned her interests to architecture and in 1926 Gray and Badovici began work on E-1027 in Roquebrune Cap Martin. It was completed in 1929. The cryptic name is code for the lover’s relationship: the ‘E’ standing for Eileen, the ‘10’ and ‘2’ represented Badovici’s initials - according to their place in the alphabet, and the ‘7’ for Gray. The couple separated shortly after the villa’s completion and Gray went on to build a new home, Tempe à Pailla, in the countryside of Menton. Le Corbusier, a regular guest at Villa E-1027, declared that Gray had copied his style and painted several garish murals on the property, much to the dismay of Gray. She never returned to the villa again. Le Corbusier also erected Le Cabanon and his intrusive camping units at the site, thereby situating Gray’s masterpiece within a Corbusian frame. It is just one of a number of violent acts incurred by Villa E-1027. During World War II, it was occupied by German soldiers who used one wall for target practice. In 1996, villa owner Peter Kägi, a gynecologist and morphine addict,

Ironically, Le Corbusier’s intrusive murals were the most preserved aspect of the property. For many years, it looked as though Villa E-1027 - one of the most important examples of domestic architecture in the 20th century and a classified French National Cultural Monument – would be lost, despite being in the hands of conservation group Conservatoire du littoral. But it has a new future thanks to the Cap Moderne trust, which is also restoring the restaurant L’Etoile de Mer (painted by Corbusier), Le Cabanon and the camping units, which are likely to open in summer. According to Michael Likierman, the next five years will see further development to the area, enhancing the public’s experience. “In 2018, we will hopefully place this unique ensemble of modern architecture in the hands of the city,” Michael Likierman tells us. Once a lost legend of 20th century architecture, Villa E-1027 has now regained its rightful place as an artistic jewel on the Mediterranean coastline.

S

imone Steuten of SIM’S & JAY’S Interior Experts has all the answers. The German-born designer with homes in the French Riviera and Provence holds a degree in Architecture and has specialised in interior design. “Fabrics, colours, playing with materials … these have always quickened my pulse,” she says. For the past 15 years, Simone has supported and advised both private individuals and real estate investors in creative concepts for interior work and design. RT Magazine: Simone, you have worked on projects all around the world. What are customers looking for when they come to you? Simone Steuten: It is my job to turn their home into something special. To do this, I develop a design concept that is tailored to their needs. Sometimes, I am asked to accompany clients to a property before they buy, to show them the creative possibilities. This is where my architectural background is always a great help. Space management is also a major challenge for many – I take the stress out of this aspect. I can access an exclusive, international repertoire of furniture, accessories, materials, and art which I

have built up over many years of professional experience, through contacts and trips, and which you can’t find in a store. Does it make a difference if the customer knows exactly what they want? Or do you prefer complete freedom in your creativity? I begin the process by getting to know the client. I question them about their ideas and preferences. I put myself in their position, and my intuition has never let me down yet. This is what drives me to be imaginative, to push myself to do more and create more than the client might ever have expected. Where do you get your ideas from, what inspires you? Travel! I always take an extra suitcase to bring back fabrics and accessories. For example, from a souk in Oman, I discovered some lovely fabrics. There are also always great finds in South Africa - their style is modern and it shows a certain earthy ease that reflects the ‘summer outdoor life’ that we also celebrate here in the south of France. Otherwise, I go to international fairs, flea markets, antique shops, work with dealers and suppliers across the globe… as inspiration is only useful if you can source your ideas ! What do you offer your customers? I offer them a full service and consult with them on every aspect of the work in progress, so that they feel confident whether it is a complete re-design or just a change of mood. What is your dream design project? I would love to create a boutique hotel from A to Z , as in all my projects my thrill is to take a rough diamond and turn it into something very special and beautiful !

Where art & business meet

Sylvie Biancheri, General Manager of the Grimaldi Forum

Monaco’s giant geometrical congress and conference centre celebrates more than a decade of success. BY AILA STÖCKMANN

W

ith its quintessential industrial chic design and an ever-impressive line-up of cultural events, Monaco’s Grimaldi Forum continues to attract people from Marseille to Italy. The centre also manages to lure top congresses and conferences from all over the world – which is no easy task. For 15 years, the Grimaldi Forum has aimed to be at the top of its game. “It was not easy establishing a name for ourselves, especially in terms of culture,” says General Manager Sylvie Biancheri. “Because being young in this industry is not an advantage.” But it was possible, and today, says a very proud Biancheri, “the greatest museums in the world are happy to lend us their works!” Not so long ago, the works of Picasso, Chagall and Warholwere not seen in the Principality - at least not to the scale as that offered for the summer exhibitions. But once again, the Monegasques have Prince Rainier to thank for today’s Grimaldi Forum – a 70,000 square metre centre that satisfies almost every demand of the industry and

is an important economic factor for Monaco, achieving a turnover of 14.5 million euros last year alone. In fact, most of its revenue comes from congresses. “But we are always looking for moments of culture,” says Sylvie Biancheri. “If we were to do away with the Summer Exhibition, for example, there would be an outcry!” The house rule is that culture must always be affordable, so Summer Exhibition tickets cost 10€ (5€ presale on the internet), while concerts, musicals and ballet are usually priced under 30€. The centre’s ISO 14001 certification and ACTGreen policy also ensures that the Grimaldi family’s environmental legacy remains centre stage in the minds of event organizers by limiting environmental impact on hosted events. Following a four-year renovation, the Grimaldi Forum looks set to take on the next 15 years with the same amount of vigour and success which has already propelled it to this stage.

JUNE

2015

RT Magazine: 15 years of the Grimaldi Forum – has it been a success story in every respect? Sylvie Biancheri: Yes, in all honesty, it has. This is demonstrated in the many international awards we have received, recognising the building and our service. But it can also be seen in our customer loyalty: 85% of our clients come back. There’s also the fact that the world’s largest museums lend us their works. Meanwhile, we have attained a kind of maturity; we are at a stage now where we build projects just for us, but we also export them as well – like our Grace Kelly summer exhibition, and the Egyptian Queens; soon Picasso is also likely to go around the world. What is your secret? Our 135 employees - the Grimaldi Forum would not be what it is without our team, because the quality of service results from the quality of staff. The first thing that our clients praise is always the quality of service. Were there moments when things didn’t go to plan? What comes to mind is the official opening at the Grimaldi Forum during which a car was being showcased in the glass entrance hall, La Verrière. Birds had picked at the seals between the glass panes and when it rained the roof started leaking – and we had buckets set up everywhere to catch the rainfall! But there are always unforeseen moments in the events industry - for example a blackout during a live show. Fortunately, we have a very professional team to ensure such mishaps remain virtually unnoticed. How will you be celebrating your birthday? It will not be a grand celebration; this is a budget issue. The days of big, extravagant parties are over. But 2015 is the Year of Russia in Monaco and this fits nicely with our anniversary. Our actual 15th birthday falls on 20th July so we are offering free entrance to the Summer Exhibition all day, with other surprises. As part of our ‘Happy 15’ celebrations, each month we will be giving away small trips with exclusive access to individual events. To participate, you simply have to fill out a little card in the entrance hall of the Grimaldi Forum!

n keeping with the pace of the past six months, July is set to be a busy one for the Monte Carlo Ballet. After a spectacular season which has seen sell-out performances including Romeo and Juliet, Imprévus and Swan Lake, the company will round off the 2014/2015 calendar with a classic: Cinderella. From 16th to 19th July, Monte Carlo Opera’s Salle Garnier is hosting a unique spectacle – the ‘Summer of Dance’. For this three-day period, charismatic director Jean Christophe Maillot has invited three young choreographers to direct the dancers of the Monte Carlo Ballet before presenting their creations to the public for one night each. Slovak choroeographer Natalia Horecna will bring an unusual twist to the stage, encouraging the audience to embrace light and be optimistic. Reflecting on the dark thoughts that often monopolise the human spirit, the young choreographer analyses our attitudes towards life. Meanwhile, Swede Pontus Lidberg, whose dancing talent – as well as his work as a director and choreographer – is internationally recognised, will bring to the troupe his creativity and visionary sense of the body in motion.

BY MADELEINE ADEY

As for the final honorary director, Jeroen Verbruggen, the one-night performance will allow him to direct some of his former comrades for the third time. Verbruggen is already a well-known face in the Principality as a dancer, and on this occasion audience members will see his talent for the art of dance reflected in his choreography of the Monte Carlo Ballet dancers once again. For this performance, Verbruggen will inspire the dancers to dive into his quirky, offbeat world to examine our inner nature and the torments of our soul. The ‘Summer of Dance’ will end with Jean-Christophe Maillot’s Cinderella, from 23rd to 26th July. Here the world-renowned choreographer will play on the theme of the recognition of one’s true love and will show us, through an electrifying, luminous performance, how a fairy tale character is above all a living being, who feels, grows and whose fate moves us. Cinderella marks both the end of the company’s season of performances in Monaco as well as its string of international tour dates, which over the past six months has taken the team to Tokyo, Lodz, Dubai, London, Versailles, Tianjin, Beijing and Wolfsburg.

t was a beautiful sunny day, exactly five months after the birth of Crown Prince Jacques and his sister Princess Gabriella. Thousands of people in Monaco came together on Sunday 10th May to celebrate the baptism of the royal twins. Adorned with 6,000 white roses and lilies, the Cathedral of Monaco welcomed 700 invited guests for a special ceremony. Gunshots were fired in the twins’ honour before they were carried into the cathedral by their adoring parents. Princess Charlene wore a Dior Haute Couture 2015 ivory dress, while the twins were presented in matching christening gowns by Baby Dior. Prince Albert’s cousin Christopher Le Vine Jr and Diane de Polignac Nigra stepped forward as Prince Jacques’ godparents, while Charlene’s brother Gareth was chosen as Princess Gabriella’s godfather and Nerine Pienaar, a close friend of the South African born princess, as godmother.

The service was delivered by Archbishop of Monaco Bernard Barsi, who also performed the couple’s marriage ceremony in 2011, and was televised live on a screen installed on the Place du Palais. Later, inside the Palace, Prince Jacques was appointed as Grand Cross in the Order of Grimaldi, while Princess Gabriella was named Grand Officer in the Order of Grimaldi.

isk and return is the magic couple defining any type of investment. Where many investors think in categories of “risk” and “no risk”, the commonplace understanding is that if one invests in fixed income securities “there is no risk”, as the security will pay a fixed coupon over lifetime and reimburse capital at maturity. This is a simplistic view under several aspects. First, it is based on the assumption that the issuer will not default. Until recently, the common view was that government bonds issued by a State in the developed world were not exposed to such a risk, but Greece has shown that this is not necessarily true. Second, it assumes that “risk” works like a light switch: in the view of many it is either on or off; here again, as the previous point shows, when investing, we must consider that risk is a “moving target”. Risk for a security can decrease and increase over time. Assumptions on risk as much as those on expected returns must guide an investment decision. Third, remember that in financial markets, risk is measured through the volatility of an asset, i.e. its likelihood to register changes in price and the amplitude thereof, volatility being an average of past changes in prices. Investors therefore ought to consider risk as a positive, if there is a reasonable likelihood that the price of the assets they are investing in will rise over time. Don’t forget also that risk decreases over time: what is noise on the markets in the short run should not be the main influencing factor for your investment behaviour when considering long term investments. Last, the view that bonds are safe is failing to take into consideration that money, as a dominant pattern, loses value over time, due to inflation. Currently, on a 10-year maturity

Risk and return

Compagnie Monégasque de Banque talks investment opportunities German Government Bond, investors can yield a 0.6% nominal return before costs. Can we safely assume that inflation will stay below 0.6% per year over the next 10 years? No we can’t. Despite the current market talk around deflation (a rare phenomenon where money is gaining value over time), the “printing of money” undertaken by large Central Banks, labelled Quantitative Easing, and a thorough look at the past would rather lead to the conclusion that future inflation risk is currently mispriced by the markets. Why then do the markets trade these bonds at such a low yield to maturity: because there is risk out there, for sure, leading many to invest in what they perceive as safe assets. What about investment opportunities? With bond returns currently close to their lows by historic standards, where do markets currently provide returns that can be considered as attractive compared to the expected risks of the respective asset classes? Equities do stand out by several valuation criteria, though being historically a more volatile asset class, i.e. a more risky one, than bonds. The historic relationship whereby bond

yields are in general higher than dividend yields, because the coupon of the bond is the main component of a fixed income security’s return, whereby the dividend paid on a stock is only a partial component of the return of the stock (mainly defined by capital gains over time), is inverted since the financial crisis and the relationship ought to normalise over time. The same is through when bond yields are compared to equities’ earnings yields. Consider that market history (since 1926 in the United States) is there to show that equities are the asset class providing a positive and the highest return over 10 year investment periods compared to other asset classes, with only a few exceptions, the period 2000 to 2010 being the most recent one. If the inversion in many of the recognized comparatives between equities and bonds, as quoted above, comes to normalise, this would mean an increased likelihood of seeing equities outperform other financial asset classes in the future, seen from today’s market levels.

rom 22nd until 26th July, some of the biggest names in the world of art dealership will be present at Monaco’s flagship venue the Grimaldi Forum, where they will exhibit their expertise and wealth of experience to ensure that this year’s Point Art Monaco is an unforgettable one. The setting of the Principality is the ideal location for the esteemed annual fair, with its idyllic landscapes, highend tourism and glamorous reputation. And this year, the event will reveal a new look with a new venue and fresh identity. Having previously been hosted at the Sporting d’Hiver, the fair’s organisers made the decision to move the event to the Grimaldi Forum in order to implement the event at the ‘nerve centre’ of all culture in the

Principality. And, most excitingly, this year the fair is assuming a new name: Point Art Monaco & Jewels of the World. Thanks to a collaboration with the revered Bakubased jewellery event, five of the most important players in the fine jewellery industry will join the art exhibitors for the five-day event. The art exhibitors, who are from around the world, have been carefully selected thanks to their diverse ranges of work, which represent a whole host of different eras and techniques. What unites them, however, is their same insistence on high quality, and for this reason the fair will welcome prestigious institutions such as the Adriano Ribolzi Art Gallery, Maison d’Art, M.F. Tonineli Art Moderne, Zurich’s Kunstberatung, De Jonchheere from Geneva, British

representatives Richard Green and Robilant & Voena, and Moretti Fine Art Ltd, from Italy. Meanwhile, the collaboration with Jewels of the World will ensure that the fair acts as a meeting point for some of the world’s leading contemporary jewelers, this year bringing together Chatila, from Geneva, London’s David Morris, Sabbadini, from Milan, and St Petersburg-based Tenzo. Under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, Point Art Monaco & Jewels of the World is an event that serves as a veritable cultural and social meeting-point for art – and now jewellery - lovers around the world. The fair will take place from 22nd-26th July 2015 at the Grimaldi Forum.

T

o escape the scorching mid-July sun, the Classic Tennis Tour in Saint Tropez will be hosted during the early evening hours. And what an event it will be, with the likes of French jester Henri Leconte, who also happens to be pretty skilled at swinging for that yellow felt ball, his Iranian counterpart Mansur Bahrami, and tennis legend Jimmy Connors. Surely you remember ‘Jimbo’ and his foul language-fuelled tirades directed at the referee, his opponent and the audience? This left-handed bad boy’s career spanned both the 70s and the 80s; an impressive pro stint that only came to an end in 1996 at the ripe old age of 43. One of the most notorious matches in tennis history is Jimmy Connors’ fourth round game against Aaron Krickstein at the 1991 US Open. In five never-ending sets he beat his younger compatriot in what was “the most brutal match of my career,” he says today. After the game, Connors and

his buddy never spoke again, until this February. Almost 23 years after that notorious game, the younger American found the courage to call Jimbo and ask for revenge. It was a belated vindication for Krickstein, who won amicably 8:5 against the 62-year-old senior with two artificial hips. Actually, Jimmy Connors is not a fan of exhibition matches. After the game with Krickstein in February he announced – as full-bodied as ever – that it was his last match in front of an audience. Yet on 13th July in Saint Tropez, the famously rude American will double up with Mansur Bahrami for a match against eternal giants Björn Borg and Ilie Nastase, the oldest member of the tournament. Three former top-ranking tennis players with huge personalities all in one tournament - what a game that will be! The following day, on France’s national holiday, Connors will – if his battered body allows him - play three

more doubles in mixes with Borg, Nastase, Bahrami, Leconte, Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro. The brainchild of Christian Bîmes, former president of the French Tennis Federation, the Classic Tennis Tour was created in Saint Tropez four years ago and has been so successful that further events are organised in similarly luxurious locations like Courchevel. Despite an incredible line of up talent, this tournament is all about having fun – and it takes place in a very intimate setting featuring a small crowd of spectators and within very close proximity to the players. In essence, this is a must for real tennis fans. The Classic Tennis Tour will be held on Sunday 12th to Tuesday 14th July at the port of Saint Tropez. Admission is 30€, free for under 14s, tickets available at the Tourist Office, Tel: 08 92 68 48 28.

PRINCE ALBERT’S bobsleigh film

PRINCE ALBERT OF MONACO AND HOLLYWOOD DIRECTOR GARRY MARSHALL ARE COMING TOGETHER in an unlikely partnership to produce Royal Ice, a film documenting the Prince’s quest to launch the Principality’s first ever bobsleigh team in the 1980s. American film director Garry Marshall will produce the film alongside production company Aldamisa Entertainment. Royal Ice will depict the creation of a Monaco bobsleigh team by Prince Albert in 1986, and his time on the team throughout all five winter Olympics between 1988 and 2002, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The 80-year-old director, whose credits include Pretty Woman and The Princess Diaries, will rewrite an original script penned by Mark Thomas and the Prince himself. “This is an exciting story about teamwork, big dreams and courage. It’s a pleasure to work with the Prince of Monaco and Garry Marshall on the same project,” said CoPresident of Aldamisa Entertainment Sergei Bespalov to the LA-based magazine. Other plot points that will be tackled include the disapproval from Albert’s father Prince Rainier III as well as assembling the team itself, which included a gardener and a casino employee. The production process for Royal Ice will begin in November this year and will be the first time that a motion picture has been filmed inside the Prince’s Palace.

NEW ROADSIDE drugs test THE ALPES MARITIMES IS ONE OF 10 FRENCH DEPARTMENTS LEADING THE WAY IN ROADSIDE DRUG SCREENING with a new and improved testing process. The system means that anything from cannabis to cocaine can be detected in a driver, without the need to transport them to hospital for a blood test. Alongside nine other departments in France, the Alpes Maritimes is involved in trialling the new system in the hope that the drug screening process for drivers is simplified and used more often. During the operation, which was undertaken by the Road Safety Department in May, five drivers tested positive for narcotics, while four were found to be over the legal alcohol limit. Their vehicles were confiscated immediately. The new test is a major improvement on existing drugs checks. It can detect which type of drug the driver is under the influence of (whether it be cannabis, methamphetamine, cocaine or heroin) without the need for a blood test or a transfer to hospital. “In France, for every 100 alcohol tests, there is just one drug screening,” said Sub Prefect François-Xavier Lauch to Nice Matin. “Ultimately, the goal is to generalise these screenings as is already the case for the alcohol tests.” The current penalty for driving under the influence of drugs is two years’ imprisonment and a 4,500€ fine.

VAR UPS property tax THE 2015 BUDGET FOR THE VAR HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED AND IT LOOKS AS IF TAXES ARE SET TO RISE ONCE AGAIN IN THE DEPARTMENT. Property tax is the most controversial increase, an issue which sparked conflict between the Var president and the FN opposition. The new budget, which this year has risen to 1.217€ billion from 1.215€ billion in 2014, was voted in on 29th April at a departmental meeting. Within the budget, 614.5€ million has been allocated for spending in the social sector, 42.9€ million for road infrastructure, 38.9€ million for communes in need, and 23.1€ million for schools. There are several reasons for the budgetary increase: the general economic climate, declining revenue, increased social needs, and the disengagement of the State,

among others. 40€ million is needed to balance the department’s finances and to fund this, local taxes have been increased. Property tax will jump from 12.46% to 14.89%: a 2% growth which will translate to a 19.5% augmentation on the tax form. “This 14.89% rate is significantly lower than the average among other departments (16.14% in 2014) which is expected to increase even more this year,” said President of the Marc Giraud. But the FN opposition wasted no time in denouncing this aspect of the budget. “It represents a 20% increase. Your constituents will say that you lied to them by not disclosing the fact that you would increase taxes during your campaign!” said FN spokesman Richard Sert. But Giraud denied that the council had hidden the fact that the department is in fiscal trouble. “At every public meeting, we acknowledged that it would be difficult over the coming years. But we’re doing everything we can to try and limit the damage.”

NEW MUSEUMS for Monaco A NEW DEVELOPMENT HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR MONACO’S QUAI ANTOINE 1ER and will feature 52 luxury apartments as well as two museums. The €300 million project has been designed by the same architect responsible for Menton’s Cocteau Museum, with construction expected to begin next year. Located at the end of the Antoine 1er dock, the development will consist of a building which will be home to 52 high-end apartments spread across 11 floors. The same plot of land will also be home to two museums – one which will be dedicated to the history of the Grimaldi family and one on the theme of ‘Man and the Sea’. The latter was designed by Rudi Ricciotti, the architect who delivered the Cocteau Museum in Menton and who is responsible for the design of the future Cannes cinema complex. This ‘Man and the Sea’ museum will feature a bold design with a manta ray-inspired concrete roof, and is also expected to feature sea-themed collections including those of underwater archaeologist Franck Goddio. Bringing the multi-million euro project to fruition is real estate group Caroli, which has been active in Monaco for over 40 years, during which time it has delivered over 60 developments in the Principality alone.

MIGRANT CRISIS

O

ne of the biggest stories currently making headlines is the influx of migrants crossing the Mediterranean and entering France, via Italy. Within the space of just four days in May, more than 800 immigrants were detained in or around Menton alone, prompting local leaders to call for action from both France’s government and the European Union. The EU Commission’s plan is to impose a migrant quota, forcing member states to take on a specific number of refugees to ease the burden on Italy and Greece. As you can imagine, this is being fiercely rejected by pretty much every country in Europe. And while I agree that something needs to change, there are some valid points being raised. As the Foreign Minister of Spain José Manuel García-Margallo said, “Pledging to take in migrants to whom you cannot provide work would be, in my opinion, providing a bad service.” Many countries in Europe are struggling to reduce double-digit unemployment figures while imposing harsh austerity measures. Is this really the best place for people looking for a secure future? What’s the solution? I am no immigration specialist, but perhaps a more realistic plan would be for the most prosperous countries with the highest job opportunities to accept the largest portion of refugees... Australia, Russia, America, Brazil, China, and Japan. The Mediterranean may be the most popular entry point for people fleeing war torn Africa and the Middle East, but just because Europe is closest shouldn’t make it solely responsible for humanitarian assistance. This a global issue. And when you see footage of the boats intercepted at sea, filled with terrified children and corpses, you can’t just call them ‘queue jumpers’ and forget about them. I would like to see immigration quotas in the places I have mentioned increased, so that refugees can legitimately seek to live in a new country – one in which they can work, pay their taxes and live prosperously. After all, shouldn’t that be the right of every human being? It depends on which side of the Mediterranean you live.

WORLD’S MOST expensive villa EVERYONE KNOWS PROPERTY PRICES ON THE CÔTE D’AZUR ARE ON THE HEFTY SIDE, but a villa in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat has upped this reputation to a new level, coming in at 217,000€ per square metre. Meanwhile, three properties on the French Riviera have been placed among the most expensive homes currently for sale in the world. The findings for 2014 were included in the annual Luxury Defined report released by Christie’s International Real Estate. The Saint Jean Cap Ferrat villa was well ahead of the other contenders for most expensive per square metre. A property in Hong Kong took second place at 137,000€ per square metre, while New York (93,000€), London (92,000€), Conneticut (85,000€), Florida (46,000€), Stockholm (38,000€) and three in California

(45,000€-58,000€) made up the rest of the top 10. However, the identity of the French Riviera villa remains a secret, as the transaction was made in complete confidentiality. Only the purchase price is known: the villa sold for 130€ million. And, according to the study, just one other in the world exceeded this sale price in 2014: a property in the Hamptons, New York, for 131€ million. But the Riviera remains a luxury real estate hotspot, with three of four of the most expensive properties currently up for sale worldwide located here. Taking the top spot is a 352€ million home in Villefranche sur Mer, while a 348€ million London house comes in second, and a 294€ million penthouse apartment in the notorious Odeon Tower in Monaco takes third place. In fourth place is a 196€ million property in Théoule sur Mer.

CHINESE VISIT scores millions THE REGION’S ECONOMY IS 26€ MILLION BETTER OFF AFTER THE BILLIONAIRE BOSS of a Chinese company paid for 6,500 of his employees to go on an all-expenses-paid trip to the French Riviera. Li Jinyuan, who has since been hailed as one of the most generous bosses of all time by media worldwide, laid on activities, museum and theatre visits for his workforce, as well as the chance to complete a world record attempt.

The four-day trip, which began in Paris on 8th May, was organised and paid for by the chairman and founder of Tiens Group, Li Jinyuan, to commemorate 20 years of partnership between the company and the region. The Chinese multinational conglomerate operates in a number of industries including biotechnology, property, education and tourism. The group stayed two nights in Paris, requiring the services of 140 hotels across the capital, before making their way via train down to the Côte d’Azur for another two nights. In total, 4,760 rooms were booked in four and five-star hotels in Monaco and Cannes, and it took 147 buses to transport the employees to Nice from their hotels. The 6,400-strong group, dressed in a mixture of turquoise and white hats and t-shirts, assembled on the Promenade des Anglais for a world record attempt. They arranged themselves to form the sentence Tiens’ dream is Nice in the Côte d’Azur. Officials from Guinness World Records were also present to verify the attempt and named it the world’s biggest ever human chain. The whole trip brought in an estimated 26€ million to the region – 13€ million directly in accommodation, travel and tickets to a show at Palais Nikaia, and the remaining 13€ million spent in shops and restaurants. “The event had a brilliant impact on the city,” said Tourism Deputy of the City of Nice Rudy Salles. “Worldwide media have talked about it.”

SHOCK UK ELECTION RESULT CAUSES POUND TO SOAR AGAINST THE EURO IN THE LEAD UP TO ELECTION DAY ON 7TH MAY, PEOPLE WOULD HAVE BET THEIR MORTGAGES ON THE RESULT BEING A HUNG PARLIAMENT. But the

Conservatives secured an unexpected majority, sparking relief among investors and businesses alike. Mayfair based estate agencies reported “off the wall” record numbers of requests on the 8th, the day the results were announced, from wealthy Brits and foreigners who would have fled the country had Labour been elected, for fear of the introduction of the ‘mansion tax’ and the abolition of the Non-Dom tax status. Sterling strength doesn’t just stop at the generality of the Conservatives gaining majority power, but continues as David Cameron, the newly re-elected Prime Minister, carefully selects his team. The two stand-out names dominating the headlines are Boris Johnson, the popular charismatic mayor of London, and Sajid Javid’s appointment as business secretary, replacing Vince Cable. It turns out Javid actually has personal experience in trade, and understands business.

Investors are also brushing off concerns over a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU, now likely to be put off until 2017. All of this has been pound positive, with sterling again reaching over €1.40 against the single currency, meaning that compared to this time last year, holiday makers in France are receiving €85 more for every £500 they spend. Meanwhile, the euro is performing badly in part thanks to Greece’s inability to pay back the IMF. All of this is causing huge market fluctuations, but what might be a positive move for one, will be a negative move for another. So, get in touch with exchange experts Moneycorp to make sure you don’t get caught out.

PM DENOUNCES migrant quota FRENCH PRIME MINISTER MANUEL VALLS USED A VISIT TO BORDER CITY MENTON IN MAY to reiterate his call for the EU to drop its migrant quota. The plan, proposed by the EU Commission on 13th May, aims to alleviate some of the pressure on countries such as Italy and Greece, which are struggling to cope in the face of increasing numbers of migrants entering their soil. Instead, Valls called for alternative initiatives to tackle the influx of migrants: a European system of border guards and more preventative measures in the migrants’ home countries. Those planning to escape to Italy across the Mediterranean in search of employment would also be assisted in finding economic solutions in their countries of origin. The first example of these preventative measures is a migrant reception centre in Niger which will open at the end the year. The centre is being constructed with the support of Niger’s President Mahamadou Issoufou. According to Valls, the only migrants that should be allowed to stay in Europe are those genuinely escaping repressive regimes, while other migrants should be expelled. France joins Britain, Hungary, Poland and a number of other member countries who are also opposing the EU plan.

BACKLASH OVER Air France closures AIR FRANCE WILL CLOSE ITS BASES IN NICE, TOULOUSE AND MARSEILLE STARTING LATER THIS YEAR. Declining profits mean that the southern French bases are no longer viable for the airline, but Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi says the move poses a “real danger” to the region’s economy. According to the airline, the 200 affected employees will be reassigned to the Paris headquarters. “This is an internal reorganisation, which will have no effect on the current flight programme, clients or on employment,” said Air France. But Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi remains unconvinced, noting the strategic importance of both Marseille and Nice

airports and implying that any threat to their development must be challenged. “The closing of Air France bases in Nice and Marseille pose real danger…The consequences will be disastrous,” said the mayor, adding that it will impact employment in the region, regardless of what Air France says. The mayor also speculated as to what the closures signify and what the airline’s long term plans are. “[Eventually,] the other provincial towns and those nearby over the border will no longer be served and the daily frequency of flights will be diminished,” claimed Estrosi. “This will lead to a decrease in the economic attractiveness and tourism of our territory.” President of the Alpes Maritimes Eric Ciotti also argued that the closures will have a detrimental effect on the region. “The setback is very worrying,” he said to France 3. “This internal reorganisation suggests a future deterioration of services, including the removal of flights.” The bases were opened in 2011 to serve the regions’ provincial cities, as well as those over the French borders and the Mediterranean basin. Aircrafts and crews were posted permanently in these cities to avoid a return journey to Paris every evening. However, with the ever-rising popularity of low-cost airlines leading to a decrease in profits for Air France, the Nice, Marseille and Toulouse bases became unfeasible.

Around 15 years ago, Denise and Piero Rossi saw a gap in the market. In the charming old town of Cervo, near the Clavesana Castle and the entrance to the village, London-born Denise and her Italian husband bought a traditional townhouse which, like the beautiful baroque church nearby, was built between the 16th and 18th centuries. They called it ‘Corallini’, in honour of the former inhabitants who fished the coral off the shores of Corsica and Sardinia. The couple rolled up their sleeves and, with

LIFE SUPPORT SURVIVE FRANCE YOUR GUIDE TO EXPAT LIVING Dear Andy, I need your help. I’m moving and I thought that getting the paperwork together for approval by the rental agency was the hard part. But it turns out that organising everything before I go is even trickier! Any advice would be welcome, Mary in Nice Hi Mary, Moving is very stressful, particularly when the procedures and methods in France are a little bit foreign to you. Follow this simple guide to make sure that you get out and in as smoothly as possible. 1) As soon as possible: • Notify your current landlord in writing, with intended date of departure • Organise a moving company (sometimes they will have a 2 – 3 months waiting list depending on the time of year that you wish to move • If you have children in school, you will have to notify the Mairie and current school of the move in order to facilitate a transition to the new school. 2) Two months before the big day (all of the following should be done in writing, sent AR): • Notify your health care provider, and if self-employed, the URSSAF, RSI and your caisse. Most of this can be done online. • Notify your employer or the Pole Emploi if you are looking for work. • Notify your local tax office. • Notify all of your utility companies, Internet, mobile phone and TV providers, and your bank or financial institutions. • Finally, notify your insurance company about your upcoming move. 3) In the month following your move:

• If applicable, change your address on

your carte de séjour at the local prefecture.

• Do a postal relocation at La Poste, to

ensure that all of your mail gets to your new address. • Change your address on your Carte Grise (certificate d’immatriculation), and car insurance. 4) Two months following your move:

• Ask for your security deposit back from your old landlord.

It is possible now to declare almost all of the above online - you will need passwords and account details but these requests are generally processed quicker than via post. Happy moving! Mon Ami Andy - Rue Lascaris, Nice Port - Tel: 04 83 50 84 78 jennifer@monamiandy.com

CANCER SUPPORT FOR ENGLISH SPEAKERS THERE’S MORE TO LIFE THAN CANCER CANCER SUPPORT GROUP 06 IS THE ONLY ENGLISH-SPEAKING SUPPORT SERVICE ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA for those living with, or recovering

from, cancer. The idea to set up a group of this kind was born after a collection of individuals – including psychologists, cancer patients and an oncology nurse – became concerned about the lack of support available to English speakers with cancer in the 06 region. The group’s motto, ‘You are not alone’, sums up the ethos of the group, whose main aim is to provide a supportive and welcoming environment for patients and their loved ones to gather and draw support from each other. The meetings are open to anyone, regardless of where they are being treated or whether or not they are still in treatment. “No one should face this difficult disease alone and those who do not speak French fluently have not been able to find adequate support,” said Meta, the group’s president. “We hope to change that with this group; after all, there’s more to life than cancer.” The group - whose members speak a host of languages, including English, Danish, Dutch, German, French and Spanish - hosts monthly meetings as well as providing one-to-one support and telephone advice. And, thanks to a generous donation from the Cogs for Cancer association, the group is now looking to extend its services so it can support more people with cancer, by branching out to new venues and recruiting more volunteers. To launch this new drive, Cancer Support Group 06 is hosting an open day on Saturday 13th June at The Grange in Mouans Sartoux (815 Chemin Gourettes). This drop-in event will explain the range of services that the group offers, with taster sessions, talks about counselling options, psychotherapy, art therapy, juicing and nutrition, sophrology and mindful meditation. Those considering volunteering will also get the chance to meet the team and register their interest. The event will run from 10am-4pm with lunch and refreshments provided.Cancer Support Group 06 meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 3.30pm in the conference room of the Centre Azureen du Cancerologie, Mougins (next to the Plein Ciel and Esperance hospitals). The ultimate success story th

Ma Nolan’s celebrates the 10 anniversary of its first Irish pub in Nice

Interview with Ma Nolan’s owner, Thady Nolan RT Magazine: Did you ever imagine when you first opened that pub in Nice 10 years ago that you would be where you are today - with three in total? To be honest, 10 years ago I wasn’t even sure if the one we had just opened would work! I knew I had to try but I definitely hadn’t started thinking of number two or three at that time. What are some of the highlights of the past 10 years? 300 Liverpool fans coming to town in August 2005 to fill the pub for four days with red jerseys and even a few flags; meeting Mela (my wife) on Christmas day in 2005; watching the final round of games in the Six Nations on Saint Patrick’s Day 2007 with Mela and my daughter Sorcha, who was two months old at the time; each of my three kids pulling their first pints of Guinness; and having my ma cut the ribbon to open each of the pubs. What were the biggest challenges you had to overcome? Dealing with French administration, especially in the early years when we were new and unknown, like losing our late license for advertising a game two hours before we received the official authorisation. We struggled in early 2009 due to an incompetent architect overspending on the Nice Port pub in 2008 and we had to borrow from one of our breweries just to pay staff. And also keeping our prices reasonable while our costs are continually going up. What is some advice you could give to other expats opening a business here in the French Riviera? There are some great opportunities here but a detailed business plan is a must - you need to have a clear idea of what you are trying to do. Also, get a good accountant and a good lawyer, especially when it comes to staff contracts. Learn French. And enjoy the weather!”

veryone knows Ma Nolan’s Irish bars in Vieux Nice, Nice Port and Cannes. It’s hard to imagine the French Riviera without them. But Ma Nolan’s success story had a humble beginning more than 10 years ago, in the dream of a man from Laois, Ireland. Thady Nolan was working in the French Riviera as a computer engineer for S3 and loved the sun, sea and sand. But there was one thing missing: a good local pub. As the banks were not overly welcoming to a foreigner with no prior record of success or experience in business, Thady managed to

secure funds from good friends and found the perfect venue in the old town of Nice. After many months of hard work and waning self-belief, the stunning Ma Nolan’s flagship pub, named after Thady’s mother back in Portlaoise, was opened on 3rd June 2005. It quickly became known for its authentic Irish atmosphere and hospitality, great food, and live sports on big screen TVs. With his predominantly Irish team, Thady opened the second Ma Nolan’s pub on Nice’s stunning port side in June 2008, followed by Ma Nolan’s Cannes in October 2012. It’s a bright future for this Irishman, who has

even more projects in the pipeline. Pubs are his passion, but he runs his businesses with precision - self created stock control systems, a tight knit management team and portfolio of staff apartments all work to make sure his dream can continue to be realised. In December, Thady’s hard work and success were recognised when he was awarded the RBC Business Person on the Year Award 2014. He says he didn’t open Ma Nolan’s for any such accolades, just to bring a great Irish local to Nice, but the affirmation that his model works is the cherry on the cake.

People of the Riviera: where were you?
