A R A MERJI A N ON THE NA MES PROJECT QUILT

The idea for the NA MES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt originated—in the telling of its conceiver, the long-time activist Cleve Jones—on the façade of the old Federal Building in San Francisco, to which activists appended photocopied f liers of loved ones lost to AIDS in the mid-1980s. If the quilt today preserves something of those origins in its reticulated panels, their sutured unity has engendered further metaphorical layers: the interlocking of diverse and disparate individuals by a single epidemic; the unbearable lightness of frail bodies converted now into the weight of multiple tons; the solitude of shame and prejudice rendered a collective refuge—something that comforts and covers rather than remain covered itself. The grid long served as the privileged motif of twentieth-century visual modernism—a realm free of language and literature, divested of biographic particulars, more apposite to geometry than to narrative. The AIDS quilt ushered in a new chapter of the grid’s history. Kitsch and folkish craft exact a joyous vengeance upon the chaste purity of the modernist grid, given over now to the personal and the commemorative. The NA MES Project offers up delimited cells for unlimited iterations of form, sentiment, and expressivity. A recent online Instagram account called The AIDS Memorial has adapted the AIDS quilt to a less material domain. Each day, various individuals—siblings, former lovers, friends, parents—post a picture and a narrative of an individual lost to the disease (usually on their birthday or the day they passed away). Several talk about how they have made panels for the Quilt; the platform thus serves as a kind of further amplification and dissemination of the NA MES Project. Though they unfurl sporadically, and virtually, these mini-memorials create a more temporal quilt, an ongoing duration of memory, of individuals gone but not forgotten.
