60 Years of Bookselling Excellence

We are honored to announce that this year Rizzoli Bookstore proudly celebrates 60 years of bookselling in New York City. Located at 1133 Broadway, we continue to embody the glamorous Italian legacy that Angelo Rizzoli envisioned.

Founded in 1964 by Milanese bookseller and publishing entrepreneur Angelo Rizzoli at 712 Fifth Avenue, Rizzoli Bookstore has been a New York landmark of art and literature for six decades.

Beyond publishing, Rizzoli was also a renowned film producer, bringing us cinematic classics such as La Dolce Vita (1960) and 8 ½ (1963) by Federico Fellini, and L’Eclisse (1962) by Michelangelo Antonioni.

I was visiting New York, walking on Fifth Avenue with the Italian Consul-General, who lamented that there wasn’t a single bookstore in the country where one could find the beautiful books published in Italy.

At that moment, we passed 712 Fifth Avenue, and I decided then to create a bookstore that would be the most beautiful in the largest city of the most important country in the world.

—Angelo Rizzoli, 1964

from Lillian

1965

Rizzoli Bookstore’s connection to cinema continues today, with appearances in films such as Manhattan by Woody Allen, Falling in Love starring Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep, and The Room Next Door by Pedro Almodóvar, which won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Biennale Film Festival. When Almodóvar needed a bookstore for the opening scene of his latest film, he naturally chose Rizzoli—recognized as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world.

This deep connection to visual arts and storytelling inspires our special anniversary program, Rizzoli at 60. We invite you to join us for a stellar lineup of authors sharing how they draw inspiration from different

artistic disciplines, highlighting the interplay between word and image that has always defined Rizzoli.

Authors such as Laurie Anderson, David Godlis, Garth Greenwell, Jhumpa Lahiri, Ira Sachs, Patti Smith, and Chris Stein will engage in open-ended conversations about inspiration, collaboration, and the creative process. Additionally, New York-based, genre-defying ensemble Tredici Bacci will pay tribute to Rizzoli’s role as a film producer with a concert inspired by Nino Rota’s soundtracks for Federico Fellini’s films.

The celebration continues with our annual Rizzoli

Bookstore Holiday Fair on December 4th, where guests can enjoy Italian pastries and Prosecco. Authors including André Aciman (Roman Year), Rumaan Alam (Entitlement), Christian Siriano (Red Carpet Dreams), Maira Kalman (Still Life with Remorse), Hunt Slonem (Bitty Birds), and Joshua Charow (Loft Law) will be present, with more to be announced.

To round out the festivities, we’ll host a two-day celebration of contemporary Italian literature curated by the international literary festival Le Conversazioni, directed by Antonio Monda, in collaboration with SIAE and AIE.

Every day, Rizzoli Bookstore not only honors its rich tradition, rooted in Italian culture and cinematic passion, but also embraces the future. We’ve evolved into a vibrant cultural hub where book launches, live concerts, performances, wine tastings, and creative workshops regularly take place.

Our customer service also continues to evolve, transforming the personalized bookselling experience of the 1960s into a modern, multi-channel offering. Alongside our in-store activities, we offer curated online shopping, personalized subscriptions, and bespoke collections. Our expert booksellers curate collections that fill the libraries of some of the world’s most beautiful homes, hotels, and venues.

We are proud to bring together a growing community of book lovers and look forward to celebrating this special year with you.
