TRADITIONAL Drawing on indigenous masterworks from ancient cultures, enduring tribal motifs, and traditional jewelry-making methods -- some of these jewels are made by indigenous artisans -- but all of them embody folkways, philosophies, and culturally significant symbols. Designers working in this vein source sustainable or repurposed materials to fabricate their own pieces, or employ skilled makers in areas where artisanal jewelry traditions are endangered. Alice Cicolini The Presence of the Past
Four different 22-karat gold meenakari enameled rings made in Jaipur, India. Meenakari is an ancient, labor-intensive hot-fire enameling jewelry technique used to color and decorate high- karat gold. In making these rings, Kamal Kumar Meenakar first drew a pattern on the gold with a sharp pencil, then super-fine lines were engraved following the pattern with his metal stylus. Next came the enamel work. The enamel, a combination of ground glass, handmade pigments, and metal, was heat fired until it morphed into liquid, then poured into the recesses created by the engraving. Next it was fired in a furnace. After cooling, Meenakar polished the enamel with an agate stone in between firings to intensify the colors so that they became as vibrant as possible. The red line of meenakari around the gemstone delineates sacred space in the same way that the line of hinglu, or red pigment, around Rajasthani picchvai paintings does.
