t HiS aDoBe HoUSe , BegUn in 1922 and constructed over the following several years, was the home of early Palm Desert residents brothers albert and Hubert Cavanagh and is possibly the oldest standing structure in the region. “Bert” Cavanagh was instrumental in developing the area and came up with the name the city goes by today, indian Wells. Constructed with thousands of four-inch-by-twelve-inch-byeighteen-inch bricks handmade by mexican workers, the rectangular house with its massive fireplace was once surrounded by twenty acres of citrus and dates. its clay roof tiles, handmade by a la Quinta resident named Joe Valenzuela, bear a distinctive shape, made by bending clay over one’s thigh. these hearty handmade tiles hold up still today. originally two bedrooms, one bath, and a second story sleeping porch, the house has been thoroughly restored by husband and wife architects, michael Burch and Diane Wilk. it is a significant remaining link to the area’s historic date industry, which, with less than 20 palms of the original twenty acres of trees remaining today, has all but disappeared.
