floorplates of a conventional nature which are expressed as Miesian curtain-walled facades of metal and glass. The office floors, however, are contained within the framework of a formal elevation articulated as base/ middle/top. ‘Bookends’ of masonry contain the volume of the building to the west and east - the formal eastern elevation addresses the route out of the city. The element of dialogue in the building is conducted on more than one level. Superficially, it is aesthetic: between solidity and transparency. The underlying dialogue is one between tradition and modernity.

entered via a dramatic, double-height entrance hall, skylit and triangular in plan – almost a keyhole. This space offers an unsettling experience, suggesting, perhaps, that the mind does not simply translate criteria into judgement but that it masters the world by dwelling on the meeting point of competing value systems. Externally restrained, the Centre makes no attempt to dominate its context. Internally, however, it is a highly stimulating and challenging building that hints at the breadth and depth of the issues surrounding the issues of ‘sanity’ and ‘madness’. This space offers an unsettling experience, suggesting, perhaps, that the mind does not simply translate criteria into judgement.
