Excerpt: Renewing Tradition

Page 1

Next page: The walls of the library are Nordic Pine, one of my favorite woods, as it best resembles the “first growth” American White Pine found in many historic homes. It is light enough that the room doesn’t feel dark or heavy, although this is also aided by the floor-toceiling, 180-degree curved window bay to the rear. The view through the living room to the dining room can be seen. The library is multifunctional, also acting as an office and a media room with concealed projector and drop down screen, all supported by a small built in bar.

Above right: My original sketch of the living room and a detailed drawing of the pediment door moldings. This home was envisioned as both an important legacy house and at the same time a warm and nurturing environment in which to bring up four children; it was very important to the owners that the house be livable. In plan, the living room centers the home and the life of the house. With a library and office space to one side and the dining, breakfast and kitchen areas on the other, most circulation is through this space.

I knew that I wanted wood flooring for most of the guest house but it was only after a drive around the plantation with the manager did we came up with the idea of using timber from the plantation for the lodge’s wood floors. The plantation regularly harvests lumber, so I chose some lob-lolly pine that had been felled the previous year and sent it to a local sawyer who cut it into wide planks. You can’t get more local in sourcing than that. The design of the guest-house took cues from the main house as we “faced”the building in whitewashed brick and used slate for the roof. Unlike at the main house, the lodge has a generous porch for sitting, reading or daytime meals, and we outfitted every exposure with shutter-trimmed, triple-hung windows our own take on Low Country vernacular. In other discreet ways, we updated tradition. The clerestory dormers we inserted not only filter daylight into the vaulted common room but give a sense that at one time the building had contained a second story for staff; this hint of a possible past history enhances the cottage’s aura of age and service. Together the soaring common room ceiling, French doors and clerestory dormers ensure that even during the short dark days of winter, it is a luminous space.

Most mornings are balmy enough to enjoy breakfast on the porch, which affords a view back to the main house as well as to the stunning, historic alle of Live oaks.

These generous porches were added and extend the entire length of the house; I thought of them almost as the deck of a boat. The owners appreciate the ease of living outdoors when the weather allows. Given that the expanse of the Sound is at the edge of the lawn, there’s inherent drama and beauty in every moment looking out to the water.

The couple wanted the children to have bedrooms of their own, but they felt each set of twins should share a bathroom. They considered it to be good training for when the kids left home. The plan locates the children’s bedrooms at the four ends of the “H”, each with 3 exposures. My idea for a central upstairs family room that could later be converted into a teen hangout was endorsed enthusiastically. Wise parents, they liked the idea that their teenage children would be within earshot when they were all at home, rather than in a separate wing or above the garage. We designed an ample common space adjacent to all the children’s bedrooms. As the climate is so mild we took advantage of the roof of the first-floor porch to create a second floor deck where the children can enjoy outdoor space to read, sunbathe, play ping-pong or just be outside. To give the interior a real material beauty, I proposed reclaimed oak for the flooring; I’d found some wonderfully patinated planks from a two-centuries-old tobacco barn in northwestern Connecticut. Not only did they agree to use it, but the husband took on the role of “antique flooring purveyor” and ordered the planks directly from the seller.

Above: Each of the four ch i ldren h a s t hei r own bedroom, but with a shared bath. Left: A large second-f loor porch facing the river is just off the Game Room, left, which is centrally located b e t we e n t h e fo u r k i d s upstairs bedrooms. Filled with overstuffed chairs and sofas, the Game Room is grown-up enough to host any of the family as well as teenage friends.

Flowing off of the living room, breakfast and master sitting areas, this centrally l o c a t e d c o ve r e d p o r c h underscores the gracious reality of living in Florida, where indoor-outdoor space makes sense almost twelve months a year. Being able to sit on a shaded porch so close to — and looking out onto the water — instills a deep sense of tranquility and connectedness to the landscape.

The remaining 2 stories also required a renewal of all the exterior finishes – clapboard was replaced, modern insulation and waterproofing added, original ornament was documented and recreated, new millwork features were added after thorough research such as an oriel window facing east that creates a window seat in the stair hall, a box bay on west porch that expands the living room complete with ornamental transom windows and a similar that does the same on the east porch for the breakfast room. This process also involved replacing all of the windows with new hurricane-resistant divided light versions designed to be stylistically consistent with the age of the house but to meet the wind loads and projectile tests. We reintroduced shutters that close and lock to protect against a storm and then finally and literally capping this off, a new roof was installed.

When we converted t he former garage into a new boathouse we made space for boat storage and enough space for a recreat iona l bar and pool table. The exp osed st ud wa lls a nd roughly hewn rafters were rescued floor planks from a threshing barn, and while they look unfinished, they are thoroughly insulated.
