It's often that a venerable New York institution gets crushed under the thumb of Manhattan real estate development. But its far less frequent that they rise like a phoenix from the ashes of their last incarnation in grand style, in an even more desirable neighborhood, all while retaining the essentials elements of its original charm. Rizzoli Bookstore is about to do just that. —Observer.com

RIZZOLI BOOKSTORE opened it’s first flagship store at 712 Fifth Avenue in 1964, then relocated to 31 West 57 Street in 1985. Now Rizzoli has proudly re-opened its flagship at 1133 Broadway in the heart of New York City's NoMad district. Just one block north of Madison Square Park and steps away from myriad of cultural destinations, the 5,000

square foot space occupies the ground-floor of the historic St. James Building, dating back to the early 19th century. The new Rizzoli Bookstore captures the classic architectural experience for which the former bookstore was celebrated, integrated into a new vision that matches today's tastes and the energy of its new location.

The kings of fancy fashion books finally have a new castle with the opening of their flagship store after their 57th Street space abruptly shuttered in late 2014. Infusing 19th century elements with touches of modernity, the current NoMad District store sounds like just the spot to curl up and read a good book— in designer duds, naturally. —VanityFair.com

Nationally recognized design firm Ike Kligerman Barkley Architects led the creation of the bookstore's interiors under the helm of partner and co-founder Thomas A. Kligerman. The new Rizzoli boasts an imposing 18' tall by 34' wide glass façade that showcases the interior's eighteen-foot ceilings, a dramatic peaked skylight, and an expansive windowed salon entered via a striking red mullioned pivot door. Many of the classic fixtures from the 57th Street store have been preserved and re-introduced in the new space, including its cherry wood bookcases and grand brass and iron chandeliers. Studio Fornasetti designed murals exclusively for Rizzoli, custom-made by Cole & Son, manufacturers of fine printed wallpapers since 1875. The designs run as a frieze above the bookcases to the ceiling in all three rooms of the store, and feature surreal motifs of Italian cities floating in the clouds, hot air balloons, Zodiac figures and the classic Fornasetti collage of newspaper fragments overlaid with colorful butterflies. Rizzoli Bookstore welcomes you to tour and shop in our new location. The store is open seven days a week: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM, Thursdays and Fridays from 10:30 AM to 9:00 PM, and Sundays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. ❖

Events

RIZZOLI BOOKSTORE is creating a unique program of cultural events that reflects the vast interests of our patrons. This longstanding tradition began in 1964 in the lush red velvet screening room in the original Rizzoli Bookstore at 712 Fifth Avenue. The art gallery on the mezzanine of the Fifth Avenue location was famous for star-studded openings and cutting edge exhibitions. We bring this heritage into the 21st century in our new NoMad location at 1133 Broadway. Our Salon, a striking room with four soaring windows facing west, and intimate window benches to lose oneself in the pages of a book, houses the heart of Rizzoli’s inventory selection– interiors, decorative arts, architecture, and design. The Salon, the culmination of a dramatic enfilade through the first two rooms–the Nave and the Skylight Room–is often

transformed into a locus for cultural gatherings: with author presentations, a retractable plasma screen for book trailers, films and runway fashion show loops, a removable stage for concerts, food and wine demonstrations and tastings, and

I am thrilled that Rizzoli has found a glamorous and superbly designed new home in New York. It’s so chic, I wish I could make it my new pied-a-terre in Manhattan. —Diane Dorrans Saeks, author
