When she could, Jackie accompanied Jack on his early trips and her assistance ranged from presiding over tea parties with elderly ladies to attending farm-equipment auctions. Later, during the election campaign itself, she was pregnant with John and made fewer appearances.

Here she is reading Jack Kerouac’s The Dharma Bums, which had recently been published. Jackie took care not to overdress though she always looked stylish—the check suit was by the French designer Bob Bugnand—and never changed her manner to pander to voters.

West Virginia, April 1960 The West Virginia primary, which took place in early May, became the make or break contest where Jack would have to prove that his Catholicism was not an impediment. This was the issue, not poverty or unemployment. After a slow start, the crowds became enthusiastic and Humphrey's campaign faltered. The picture taken in Charleston became one of Jack's favorite images.

WINNING THE NOMINATION

Jacques did not fancy being a wedding photographer and thought the conditions made it impossible to get good images, but he dutifully captured Jack taking the bride for a spin on the dance floor. The image of Jackie gazing away pensively was more to Jacques’s liking.

According to Jackie, “Caroline loves to mix the paints. She makes a terrible mess with them.” Jackie enjoyed painting in an early American style. When Jack returned from the convention, she marked the occasion by giving him a painting. In it, Jack, dressed as an old-fashioned sea captain, stands in the stern of his boat Victura ("About to Conquer") as it arrives at the dock where Jackie and Caroline are waiting with a band and a banner that reads “Welcome back Mr. Jack.”

“We had just taken a family portrait for the Christmas card and Jack had run upstairs to change to go play golf—he was saying goodbye to Caroline”. Caroline’s book, I Can Fly, is a classic book of verses for children that is still in print. Jackie shared her love of reading with her children. When Caroline was 3, Jackie taught her to recite two short poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay as a surprise for Jack.
