I search for the realness, the real feeling of a subject, all the texture around it . . . I always want to see the third dimension of something . . . I want to come alive with the object. —Andrew Wyeth Every object, material, and work of art reveals an essential part of its character through its surface. Texture is the dimensional aspect of that surface. As such it is also a form of pattern, which is how I frequently use it. In my view, controlled textural variety makes for an extremely interesting and powerful visual landscape—and a compellingly tactile one, as well. Above all, texture has great allure. It intrigues and draws the eye as it simultaneously invites the touch. In interiors, texture comes most obviously from fabrics, woven and otherwise, and materials of all kinds. Textiles can run the gamut from refined and diaphanous to gutsy and coarse, from simple and straightforward to intricate and complex. Most often my preference is for fabrics that have textures with great visual heft, but I also am fond of those that are gauzy and transparent, that let light through and create an ethereal effect. From walls, floors, and ceilings to furniture and accessories, everything in a room and in a composition has texture. Each component of the overall design provides an opportunity for the designer to introduce textures from shiny to matte, smooth to rough, and so many more. With these come added interior dimensionality—in my eyes, a substitute for pattern. That said, texture has its own set of rules for proper usage. Function, as always, comes first. I always balance the use of the texture in consideration with the intended purpose to make sure they complement one another. In this, I also consider durability, practicality, and maintenance. Some situations require texture that can stand up to hard use; others, much less so. Often a gutsy and heavy texture, although visually strong, can be very fragile and its application must be carefully considered. I like texture and the extravagant use of many textures in one composition. As with pattern, I believe texture must enhance and reinforce, not distract from, the form onto which it is placed.
