Friday 22 August – Thursday 4 September Director Shane Meadows Cast Piotr Jagiello, Thomas Turgoose, Ireneusz Czop, Elisa Lasowski UK 2008, 1h15m
The director and star of This is England reunite for this bittersweet teen tale. Runaway Tomo (Thomas Turgoose) arrives in London with nothing but a bag and a swagger. Within hours, the bag has been stolen and a chance meeting with bored Polish teenager Marek proves Tomo’s only hope. Together, the two pursue moneymaking scams – as well as the affections of local waitresses. Despite the bleakness of the inner London setting, this is Shane Meadows at his most charming, compassionate and hilarious. EIFF 08 Shane Meadows’ short Where’s The Money Ronnie? (13mins) will screen before all performances of Somers Town from Monday 1 – Thursday 4 September.

Diagnosed with autism variant Asperger’s Syndrome Ben is hardly a typical adolescent. He never speaks, save to his long-suffering, divorced mother and little brother. Bullied at school Ben’s only solace is the time spent playing sword-and-sorcery game Overlord, where he can be the fearless hero slaying foes left and right. The closest thing he has to a friendship is with Scarlite, a female online gamer he’s never met. Ben seems to be edging toward violent revenge or suicide, or simply disappearing for keeps into his fantasy world, but this film has a twist. Already bought by the USA for a remake, the film ambitiously takes on three difficult themes - schoolroom bullying, autism and the influence of computer games on those who play them - and turns these issues into a fascinating story.

Uruguay 2007, 1h37m, Spanish with subtitles
In 1988 the small Uruguayan border town of Melo was gripped by papal fever. The local media suggest that 50,000 Brazilians will descend on the town for a glimpse of Pope John Paul II. The impoverished residents believe that this is a God-given chance to improve their lot and so the race is on to feed, water and profit from the tourists. Beto (César Troncoso) decides to build a public washroom and his heroic endeavours form the basis of a film with all the charm and telling humour of a vintage Ealing comedy. This moving story that blends the sacred and profane is an elegantly crafted tale of the frenzy that ensues when a celebrity comes to town. The only thing that seems clear is that neither the Pope nor a toilet can make anyone’s dreams come true. **** Perfectly formed…this warm comedy has a gentle Life Of Brian flavour Larushka Ivan-Zadeh, Metro See page 9 for details on Walter Salles’ film, Linha de Passe, an astonishingly beautiful fresco about a dysfunctional family living in the outskirts of Sao Paulo. The hit of Sundance: a hip, witty, buddy comedy that follows its own rules. Summer in the city, but Luke ( Josh Peck) isn’t having much fun. As his sexy school friend Stephanie puts it, “You never see the dopeness. You only see the wackness” (Well, it is 1994). Enter Stephanie’s madcap psychoanalyst stepdad (Sir Ben Kingsley, in his most extraordinarily transformative performance since Sexy Beast), who’s in need of a bit of dopeness himself… and maybe a hookup with flower child Union (Mary Kate Olsen) … EIFF 08
THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS 12A Friday 12 - Thursday 25 September Director Mark Herman Cast David Thewlis, Vera Farmiga, Asa Butterfield, Jack Scanlon, Sheila Hancock, David Hayman
Iceland 2006, 1h35m , Icelandic with subtitles
UK 2008, 1h34m
A blockbuster in its native Iceland, adapted from Arnaldur Indridason’s 2000 bestseller, this is a sombre, sinewy police procedural by the talented actorwriter-director Baltasar Kormákur (101 Reykjavík). The discovery of a bludgeoned body sets seen-it-all cop Erlendur and his squad on the trail of a decades-old mystery involving rape allegations, a corrupt small-town constable, and his trio of thug enforcers. Meanwhile, in a seemingly unconnected side plot, a dead girl’s grieving father immerses himself in shady actions at a genetic research facility. While the film works beautifully as a murder mystery, it consistently explores larger, more substantial issues, offering an intellectually and emotionally complex meditation on genetics, ethics and parental responsibility.
A beautifully paced and moving film based on award-winning author John Boyne’s story of the forbidden friendship between two children placed on either side of a concentration camp fence. When his father is promoted to Nazi Kommandant, eight-year-old Bruno and his family move from Berlin to the relative isolation of rural Poland. There, in Auschwitz, Bruno becomes fascinated by the distant figures he sees in ‘striped pyjamas’ behind a tall fence in a restricted area. Despite the barrier placed between them, Bruno develops a secret bond with Shmuel, a Jewish boy his own age. Their friendship leads to the nightmarish revelation of the world beyond the wire fence. The BBFC have rated this film 12A for scenes of holocaust threat and horror, adding that some scenes were unsuitable for children of around eight. GFT recommends this film for anyone aged 10 and over. For further guidance see www.pbbfc.co.uk Schools are welcome to book discounted places at public screenings of this film. Friday 19 September – Thursday 2 October Directors Walter Salles, Daniela Thomas Cast Sandra Corveloni, João Baldasserini, Vinícius de Oliveira, José Geraldo Rodrigues, Kaique Jesus Santos Brazil 2008, 1h48m, Portuguese with subtitles
Linha de Passe is an astonishingly beautiful film about a dysfunctional family living on the outskirts of Sao Paulo. Walter Salles co-directed with Daniela Thomas (also cowriter of the The Motorcycle Diaries) and used non-actors except for Vinicius de Oliveira who was seen in Salles’ earlier film Central Station. Set over four months, the story follows the family – a middle aged mother and her four very different sons – as they try to cope with their poverty, responsibilities and hopes. Sao Paulo: 20 million inhabitants, 200 kilometers of traffic, 300,000 messengers on motorcycles. At the heart of one of the toughest, most chaotic cities in the world, four brothers try to reinvent themselves in different ways. With the backdrop of Brazil in a state of emergency, every single one is looking for a way out. Cannes Film Festival 2008

I’VE LOVED YOU SO LONG IL Y A LONGTEMPS QUE JE T’AIME
15
Friday 26 September – Thursday 9 October Director Philippe Claudel Cast Kristin Scott Thomas, Elsa Zylberstein, Serge Hazanavicius France 2008, 1h48m, French and English with subtitles
Kristin Scott Thomas gives an extraordinary performance, one of the best of her career, in I’ve Loved You So Long. An absorbing family drama, it is the first feature from 46-year-old director Philippe Claudel, whose experience as a novelist and screenwriter shines through in a script brimming with psychological insight. Returning to her home town of Nancy in north-east France after a long, mysterious absence, Scott Thomas’ character, Juliette, is taken in by her younger sister Léa (Elsa Zylberstein), who lives with her husband, their two adopted Vietnamese daughters and her father-in-law. Juliette labours under a painful secret but, weary and withdrawn, she is slow to lay it bare.
The latest film by the director of Central Station and The Motorcycle Diaries, co-helmed by Daniela Thomas, is a superbly-handled ensemble piece that paints an insightful and compelling portrait of life in São Paolo. Sukhdev Sandhu – The Daily Telegraph
As details of her years away emerge, a gradual reconciliation occurs between Juliette and the people around her. For a film that hinges on emotional rapprochement, I’ve Loved You So Long is strikingly composed and devoid of melodrama. Claudel prefers to focus on low-key, everyday events but, thanks to the elegantly structured plot, the film keeps us on the edge of our seats throughout.
See page 6 for details on El Baño Del Papa a warm perfectly formed comedy from Uruguay. See page 22 for details on Neuva Ola – cinema from Latin America.
I’ve Loved You... has a strong cast, but Scott Thomas’ Juliette is a particularly intriguing character and her plight is all the more affecting for the control with which it is handled, by the actor and director alike. Killian Fox, The Observer BUY TICKETS ONLINE WWW.GFT.ORG.UK

DAVID LEAN NEW PRINTS RESTORED BY THE BFI
David Lean
Don’t miss the last two films in our season celebrating the centenary of David Lean’s birth. His films regularly appear in both critics and filmgoers’ polls of the greatest films all of time, despite the fact he only made 16 films over a career of 40 years. A major influence on modern populist directors such as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Martin Scorsese, Lean’s technical prowess and the depth of his cinematic vision arguably goes unrivalled today.

Tuesday 9 (12.45) & Wednesday 10 September (6.15)
Cast Ann Todd, Trevor Howard, Claude Rains UK 1948, 1h31m
Cast Ann Todd, Leslie Banks, Elizabeth Sellars, Ivan Desny
The Passionate Friends has been hailed by critic David Thomson as Lean’s ‘most deserving rediscovery’. Mary (Ann Todd) has chosen a comfortable secure life with her rich banker husband (Claude Rains) over romantic passion with her first love Steven (Trevor Howard). Turmoil ensues when Steven suddenly reappears in her life. With its subtle performances, nuanced direction and beautiful cinematography, Lean’s absorbing romance, adapted from a story by H G Wells, is a fascinating companion piece to Brief Encounter.
In this period drama, set in Victorian Glasgow and based on a true story, Lean exploits the ambiguous and enigmatic screen presence of Ann Todd. Here she plays a young woman who, rebelling against her patriarchal father, falls for a penniless but exploitative French aristocrat who later dies of arsenic poisoning. The murder charge brought against Madeleine demonstrates contemporary society’s prejudice against women who dared to expose their sexuality. Guy Green’s deep focus photography owes much to Citizen Kane.

Director Shusuke Kaneko Cast Tatsuya Fujiwara, Ken’ichi Matsuyama, Erika Toda
Director François Ozon Cast Romola Garai, Sam Neill, Charlotte Rampling
Japan 2006, 2h15m, Japanese with subtitles
This film has a huge cult following in Japan where it outperformed Pirates of The Caribbean 3. The sequel to Death Note picks up exactly where the first chapter left off, with the same cast and crew providing seamless continuity. Light and ‘L’ continue their private struggle, with Light getting dangerously close to his nemesis. Then things really get complicated when a charismatic second God of Death turns up, bringing with him another Death Note book and introducing TV idol Misa to the deadly game. The movie manages to weave complex ideas about justice and power into its bright comic book plot, and cleverly makes both L and Light equally engaging so that your allegiances are constantly torn. This is a highly entertaining supernatural thriller.
France/UK 2007, 1h59m
Atonement star Romola Garai dazzles in François Ozon’s adaptation of the Elizabeth Taylor novel. Evoking all the style and elegance of the Hollywood studio system this is the beguiling tale of Angel, a grocer’s daughter who dreams of becoming a famous writer and owning the country mansion she walks past but can never enter. Her success in Edwardian England is the basis for a lavish melodrama in which Angel becomes rich beyond her wildest dreams but doesn’t necessarily find happiness. GFF08

Director Thomas McCarthy Cast Richard Jenkins, Hiam Abbass, Haaz Sleiman, Danai Gurira
Documentary, UK 2008, 1h30m English and French with subtitles
A truly awe-inspiring and entertaining documentary which takes a poignant look back at “the artistic crime of the century”. In 1974, after six years of obsessive planning, a young Frenchman, Philippe Petit, snuck into the World Trade Center with a group of conspirators to execute a daredevil tightrope walk across a cable strung 1,350 feet above ground between the Twin Towers. Director Marsh (The King) draws on breathtaking archival footage, clever dramatisations and candid interviews with those involved in the stunt to create this scintillating, funny and uplifting film which has recently garnered top prizes at the Sundance and Edinburgh film festivals.
USA 2007, 1h46m
This impressive follow-up to his much-loved debut The Station Agent finds McCarthy returning with a similarly moving and simple tale of connection in an increasingly isolated world. Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under) stars as a withdrawn university professor who, visiting New York City for a conference, finds two illegal immigrants - a young Syrian man and his Senegalese girlfriend - living in his long-vacant Manhattan pied-à-terre. When he reluctantly invites the couple to stay, an unlikely friendship develops between the trio as they struggle with their individual problems. Focusing on the human side of the immigration debate, McCarthy sketches the characters’ shared humanity in subtle, humourous and dramatic ways.

Widely hailed as one of the greatest television series ever, The Wire has gained a reputation as challenging, urgent and uncompromising drama. Since it was first broadcast in 2002 TV critics have raved about the series. The New York Times has described it as ‘unquestionably one of the best and most original series on television.’ Set in Baltimore, it is a rich, sprawling portrait of the city and documents the war on drugs being waged by the Baltimore Police Department. After spending a year with the Homicide Unit, David Simon went on to write Homicide: A Year On the Killing Streets, a true crime classic that led to the creation of The Wire.
Julian Jarrold’s sumptuous new adaptation of the Evelyn Waugh novel puts its own distinctive stamp on the classic tale of social ambition, desire and the crushing weight of religious conviction. Matthew Goode’s Sebastian is the outsider beguiled by the glamour of the aristocratic Marchmain family and the breathtaking beauty of their home at Brideshead. Emma Thompson excels as the piously Catholic Lady Marchmain in one of the best British films of the year.

If you enjoyed Mamma Mia! – you’ll love this!
Grease is the word – what else can you say about the musical voted the most popular in the world?
This is a charming and beautifully told story of a life-changing encounter between a wild fox and a young girl. Thanks to the fox, the little girl discovers a wild and secret environment, and begins an adventure that will change her life and her vision of the world. Narrated by Kate Winslet.
Abba: The Movie emerged in 1977 at the height of the Swedish band’s enormous global fame. Shot in Australia by fellow Swede Lasse Hallström, the film is designed to give viewers a glimpse of the off-stage life enjoyed by the members of Abba, as well as the on-stage euphoria of their live shows. This is a great way to experience the frenzy that surrounded one of the biggest bands in the world during the 1970s.

MONORAIL FILM CLUB PRESENTS

15
Sunday 21 September (7.45)
The Outer Limits
Director Lindsay Anderson
The Outer Limits is a new film series from the makers of Psychotronic Cinema featuring screenings of lost classics and maniacal movies that take you over the edge.
Lindsay Anderson is surely near the very top of any canon of British film-makers and the Monorail Film Club is extremely proud to present two lesser known films which almost bookend his brilliant career. O Dreamland is a wry look at the British seaside resort of Margate in the 1950s, when it was a shining beacon in the world of British theme parks. This detached, impressionistic exploration of a British funfair in the 1950s becomes a detached, impressionistic record of his own life 40 years later in Is That All There Is? his dark but funny autoportrait for BBC Scotland.
PHASE IV
UK 1993/1953, 52m/12m
PG
Tuesday 9 (8.20) & Wednesday 10 September (2.00) Director Saul Bass Cast Michael Murphy, Nigel Davenport, Lynne Frederick UK 1974, 1h33m
Quiet, haunting, beautiful, Phase IV is an intriguing, almost totally forgotten science-fiction masterwork. The feature film debut of renowned title designer Saul Bass (the man behind the vivid credits sequences from Psycho and Vertigo), Phase IV shows Bass to be adept at both crafting a vibrantly visual film and weaving together an enthralling, otherworldly and thought-provoking science-fiction tale. The macabre images are imbued with such eerie beauty that we cannot help but revel in the sublime photography, even as we recoil from the horror. The screening on Tuesday 9 September (8.20) will be introduced by Neil Symington, Curator of Transport & Technology at Glasgow Museums who will give an overview of Bass’s work up to the time of making Phase IV.

Sunday 28 September (2.30) Documentary, UK 1936–1939, 1h20m
In 1933, the General Post Office (GPO) made history by founding its own film production unit which became internationally renowned as a centre for creative, exciting public information films, leaving us perhaps the most evocative record of the 1930s zeitgeist on celluloid. This selection of some of its greatest short films, newly restored by the BFI National Archive, showcases the Unit’s sheer range: from quintessential documentary (Night Mail) to avant-garde animation (Trade Tattoo) and even musical comedy (The Fairy of the Phone). Made by such varied talents as Grierson, Cavalcanti, Len Lye and Norman McLaren, the films bring alive a revolution in mass communications as epochchanging then as the internet is now. The screening will be introduced by Dr Melanie Selfe from the Centre for Cultural Policy Research at the University of Glasgow. Presented by the BFI in partnership with Royal Mail, The British Postal Museum & Archive and BT Heritage. BUY TICKETS ONLINE WWW.GFT.ORG.UK

Director Hector Babenco Cast Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos, Milton Gonçalves
The Women’s Support Project, in conjunction with Glasgow Film Theatre, presents this popular annual event to mark September as ‘Month of Action’ to raise awareness about child sexual abuse. This year’s event will screen the Panorama investigation Teenage Sex for Sale. The team’s investigation uncovered how girls, sometimes as young as 12, are being groomed for prostitution by men on the streets of Britain.
At once brave and unassuming, What Are We Doing Here? follows three American brothers and their cousin as they travel from Cairo to Cape Town asking what happens to the money we give to charity? Why does so little seem to be changing? Could our so-called “humanitarian” interventions be doing more harm than good? An important and timely film that will change the way you think about Africa.
A sign language interpreter will be present. Following the screening there will be an audience/panel discussion. Liz Bloor of BBC, who was the producer on the programme, will be on the panel along with others. £

Brazil/Argentina, 2003, 2h 26m Portuguese with subtitles
WHO KILLED THE WHITE LLAMA? QUIÉN MATÓ A LA LLAMITA BLANCA 15 Monday 22 September (6.15) Director Rodrigo Bellott Cast Miguel Valverde, Erika Andia Bolivia, 2006, 1h 52m, Spanish with subtitles
A confrontational drama based on the real life experiences of doctor Drauzio Varella (carrying out work into AIDS prevention) inside the state penitentiary Carandiru in São Paulo, Brazil. Seeing the disease, overcrowding, and rampant circulation of drugs in the prison, the doctor comes to realize there is a complex internal hierarchy among the prisoners, which eventually leads to a violent conclusion. Filmed on location in the actual penitentiary, with a huge cast of novice actors - some of whom are former inmates - Carandiru is a rich tapestry of stories woven together masterfully. Like the critically acclaimed City of God, and even more successful in its native country, Carandiru presents an uncompromising portrayal of the harsh realities of life for Brazil’s underclass.
A drug run descends into all out farce when Bolivian couple Jacinto and Domitila attempt to transport fifty kilograms of cocaine to the Brazilian border. Posing as a pair of expectant farmers trying to reach the hospital on time, the pair begin to question their criminal lifestyle after becoming caught up in a treacherous game of catand-mouse. The first Bolivian High Definition digital film, this irreverent road movie broke all box office records for domestic films, and is a fine example of the exciting neuva ola (new wave) emerging from contemporary South America. Undermining preconceptions of form and content, the film destroys the stereotype of the abused Latin American victim and is both a celebration and a parody of Bolivian customs.
