GOMORRAH

Friday 10 – Thursday 23 October Director Matteo Garrone Cast Salvattore Abruzzese, Simone Sacchettino, Salvatore Ruocco Italy 2008, 2h17m, Italian with subtitles
The author is Roberto Saviano, 29 years old, who achieved 3.5 million sales of his first book, an angry essay about the mafia, and who now lives under 24-hour police protection. The filmmaker is Matteo Garrone, the enfant terrible of Italian cinema. The result of their encounter: Gomorrah, a ruthless movie which broke box office records in Italy and won the Grand Prize at Cannes. The book was a literary sensation. A Neapolitan whose doctor father was almost killed by the Camorra for treating the victim of a hit, rather than leave him to die, Saviano decided to bare all in print - facts and names. “What the mafia couldn’t forgive was not the book but its success. If the book hadn’t been published in Naples it would have been okay, the mafiosi would even share it among themselves because they would be pleased that someone told their story.” But the author is a child who grew up among them: unforgivable. Director Garrone decided to follow the book’s structure of disconnected but interwoven stories: “This is not a film about good and evil. We’re showing people crushed by the Camorra’s system against which they can’t rebel.” As Fabio Ferzetti, celebrated film critic puts it: “This is not a story, there are no characters, and even less psychology. This is not science fiction or criminal romanticism. This is the daily reality of hundreds of thousands of Italians.”

Friday 17 October – Thursday 6 November Directors Joel & Ethan Coen Cast George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, Richard Jenkins, Brad Pitt USA 2008, 1h36m
At the headquarters of the CIA, analyst Osborne Cox ( John Malkovich) arrives for a top-secret meeting. Unfortunately for Cox, the secret is soon out: he is being ousted. Cox does not take the news well and returns home to work on his memoirs and his drinking. His wife Katie (Tilda Swinton) is dismayed, though not surprised; she is already having an affair with Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney), a married federal marshal, and sets about making plans to leave Cox for Harry. Elsewhere in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, and seemingly worlds apart, Hardbodies Fitness Centers employee Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand) can barely concentrate on her work. She is consumed with her life plan for extensive cosmetic surgery, and confides her mission to colleague Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt). When a computer disc containing material for the CIA analyst’s memoirs accidentally falls into the hands of Linda and Chad, the duo are intent on exploiting the find. As Linda’s boss Ted (Richard Jenkins) frets, “No good can come of this,” events spiral out of everyone’s and anyone’s control, in a cascading series of darkly hilarious encounters.

Lindsay Anderson was an innovative, provocative filmmaker who throughout his career satirised and scrutinised British society. In Never Apologize McDowell plays the lifelong friend, paying tribute to a man whose work had such a momentous effect on his career.
Unrelated is an exceptional directorial debut. Lonely forty-something Anna is childless and her unhappy marriage is crumbling. A holiday with old friends teases her with glimpses of a jubilant life she could have lived. As sexual tensions bubble under the surface, Anna faces new opportunities, but must come to terms with old problems.

The twentieth century can be defined by rapid change and modernisation. This programme presents artists’ films that reflect and explore the matrix of change, and how science and technology, creativity and invention have moved towards the more synchronised experience of modernity. The mechanisms of production become less conspicuous and modes of consumption define lifestyle from an expansive field of possibility. Including work by Kenneth Anger, Len Lye, László Moholy-Nagy, Mary Ellen Bute, Ferdinand Kriwet and Mark Leckey. Curated by Michelle Cotton. www.independentcinemaoffice.org. uk/essentials The screening will be introduced by Avant-garde film specialist Dr Kim Knowles of The University of Edinburgh.

Friday 24 – Sunday 26 October
Documentary Italy/Switzerland/USA 2005, 1h42m some subtitles
Director Terrence Malick Cast Martin Sheen, Sissy Spacek
This film is a fascinating trip back in time to Downtown Manhattan in the 70s, as lived first-hand by photographer Edo Bertoglio. Adopted by Andy Warhol, Bertoglio became the man responsible for immortalising the scene’s supercool stars in the pages of the Factory house magazine Interview, including the likes of Basquiat and Debbie Harry. Having lost his exalted position following a destructive drug addiction, Bertoglio returns here to his former haunts to offer a unique insider’s perspective on the faces, lives and work that continue to resonate even now.
Re-released in a new print from BFI, is Malick’s groundbreaking debut Badlands. Set in a sleepy South Dakota town in the 1950s, Kit (Martin Sheen), a 25-year-old garbage collector, meets Holly (Sissy Spacek), a bored highschool student ten years his junior who, struck by Kit’s resemblance to James Dean, defies her father’s disapproval, stands by as Kit subsequently shoots him and then goes on the run.
USA 1973, 1h34m
Return was a bare-bones mystery-thriller. After a five-year wait, his second feature The Banishment pulls off a similar trick, once again starring Konstantin Lavronenko as an errant father in this dark family drama. A married couple and their two children arrive for a summer vacation at the husband’s remote pastoral childhood home, but the family’s seemingly fixed order is shattered when the wife makes a shocking revelation.

Director Cheick Fantamady Camara Cast Alexandre Ogou, Balla Moussa Keita Guinea, 2007, 1h37m French and Malinke with English subtitles
Guinean filmmaker Cheick Fantamady Camara’s debut feature proposes a romantic twist on the recurrent tradition-versus-modernity theme of African cinema. BB works as a political cartoonist at a liberal newspaper, and is in love with his boss’s talented computer-scientist daughter, Kesso. But his choice meets with stiff opposition from his strict Muslim father Karamako. Camara never oversimplifies the emotional complexities of the situation, particularly the difficulty of remaining connected to a divided cultural heritage.
LUNCHTIME LECTURE

Wednesday 29 October (6.30) Director Andy Jones
An intimate portrait of living legend Bi Kidude, probably the oldest singer on the world stage today. Her home island of Zanzibar has long been a meeting point for black African and Arabian influence, with the island’s music as its most potent expression. Bi Kidude beguiles audiences wherever she travels but domestically she continually courts controversy, her behaviour challenging preconceptions of the role of women in Muslim society. As Old As My Tongue reveals the dramatic constraints in the life of this iconic musician and features a classic soundtrack spanning one hundred years of Swahili music.
GLASGOW, TOBACCO, SLAVERY AND ABOLITION Wednesday 8 October (1.00)
This free lecture examines Glasgow’s mercantile past and illustrates the links with tobacco, slavery, abolition and the city’s urban environment. The talk provides an intriguing account of the role of slavery in Glasgow’s history, one which has been largely unrecognised until recent times. Wednesday 1 October (8.30) Director Roy Ward Baker Cast Bette Davis, Sheila Hancock, Jack Hedley, James Cossins UK 1968, 1h35m
Glasgay’s tribute to the legendary Bette Davis. The Anniversary is a perfectly pitched black comedy centering around an annual family gathering for the anniversary of an overbearing mother and her late husband. Davis demands the presence of her three sons: a shy cross-dresser, a henpecked father of five and a careless youth who brings a different fiancé to meet his mother every year. Watch as she exposes some nasty home truths and then rips them to pieces. Screening with short film Mommy’s House (19mins) Two queer criminals on the run get more than they bargained for when they take refuge at Mommy’s house. It seems that mother always knows best, and she’ll stop at nothing to protect her family.

In advance of the retrospective of Valerio Zurlini’s work in November, we present an introduction to his films. Pasquale Iannone who teaches Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh and also is a writer and broadcaster, will examine the work of Valerio Zurlini whose passion for figurative art, from his earliest documentaries and shorts, infuses his entire oeuvre. A masterful director of actors, Zurlini’s contemplative, intimate aesthetic has been compared to that of Japanese master Ozu, yet he is also, along with Antonioni, one of the great directors of landscape. 3 All tickets £3 for this talk Book Zurlini Retrospective films now: Violent Summer/ The Girl with the Suitcase

ARCTIC MONKEYS AT THE APOLLO PG
Director Bill Forsyth Cast Tom Mannion, Eddie Burt, Richard Demarco
Tuesday 14 October (8.30)
UK 1980, 1h33m
UK 2008, 1h16m
Bill Forsyth’s iconic first feature film, set in a fictitious town called Glasgow, lays down a winning, slightly awkward style which paved the way, only one year later for the much better known Gregory’s Girl. That Sinking Feeling, which has a very similar cast to Gregory’s Girl, is perhaps slightly clunkier, but is still a brilliant document of a late 70’s / early 80’s Glasgow which already looks very different to the city we now know. But it’s still raining and the character types are familiar enough - Ronnie (Robert Buchanan) and his pals are on the lookout for a brilliant scam to get rich quick, only to hit upon the idea of stealing 90 stainless steel sinks. It sounds slightly unplotted and gauche, and really it is, but somehow it totters forward with brilliant performances and excellent dialogue, into something completely life-affirming and magical.
Arctic Monkeys at the Apollo is a film of the last gig in the Arctic Monkeys acclaimed world tour 2007 - a stunning show captured exquisitely on film. It is a cinematic feast with impressive, intuitive, confidently held master shots - a film that invites the audience to immerse themselves in the style and force of the UK’s most striking band as they deliver one of their most intense performances to date. It is an exceptionally high standard piece in the mould of Stop Making Sense. This one night only screening will feature an exclusive, personal introduction to the film by the band, filmed by Richard Ayoade.
Live performance film
That Sinking Feeling was selected by Dep Downie from Monorail Music and will be followed by a conversation between actor, Robert Buchanan and Stuart Murdoch of Belle & Sebastian. www.myspace.com/monorail_film_club

Ghost Show brings these two together in this special screening. You’ll enjoy some of the earliest films ever shown in Scotland and learn how Showground pioneers such as Victor Biddall, Harry Kemp and George Green made Scots love the movies. You will also see how filmmakers have captured Scots enjoying themselves at fairs and public holidays across the decades, and hear the recollections of the Travelling Showpeople who made them happen. Using archive film, interview clips, multimedia, and live music The St Kilda Tapes is a cinematic event not to be missed. Alongside live music performed on guitar, zither, ukulele and sampler, the show explores the themes of emigration and home through the experiences and thoughts of Norman Gillies, who was evacuated from St Kilda in 1930, aged five. An emotional journey of the senses, The St Kilda Tapes is a moving and amusing piece featuring the guitarist David Allison, the driving force behind the successful Island Tapes project. Using rarely seen 20’s and 30’s film footage from the Scottish Screen Archive, this amazing musical journey takes you from the lonely island of St Kilda to bustling Manhattan and beyond as you follow the emigrant’s trail. The show recently sold out the Barbican Cinema in London, and also toured Canada earlier this year. Book now to avoid disappointment. www.myspace.com/thestkildatapes www.theislandtapes.com
