Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity. - Hippocrates
ASPLUNDH CANCER PAVILION JEFFERSON HEALTH - SYDNEY KIMMEL CANCER CENTER PERSON-ENVIRONMENT THEORY Person-environment theory explores how a person connects with their environment. Furthermore, this concept states that a person is heavily influenced by their environment which means their actions and well-being can be largely understood by environmental influences.
THEORY WITHIN STUDY Exterior view
Exterior wall provides abundant daylight and views of nature
A cool color scheme and nature inspired finishes throughout the interior
DESIGN IMPLICATIONS - Use biophilia design as inspiration by utilizing natural elements, such as, abundant natural light and views of exterior greenery. - Provide local sources for materials like stone, indigenous plants, and local contractors. - Use alternative materials, such as, finished aluminum. Finished aluminum components are less costly than real wood, provide superior performance while retaining the natural aesthetic, and offer long-term durability.

PRECEDENT STUDY
The LEED-certified pavilion, located in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, was completed in July 2018 by the designer, Ewing Cole. The 86,000 GSF pavilion brings provider’s cancer treatment program under one roof which is based on a model of treating cancer recovery as a holistic process rather than a medical issue. Services include: medical oncology, infusion and radiology, a retail pharmacy, massage, palliative care, nutritional programs, a resource center, counseling, and more (Silvis, 2019). The integration of these services inspired an extensive biophilic design approach, influencing elements ranging from site layout to exterior envelope to interior aesthetics (2018, November 8).
This hospital’s program is one of the busiest cancer centers in the region with at least 2,000 new patients each year. Therefore, it was imperative to create a peaceful and serene healing environment. “Research shows that the environment has an effect on the burden of disease and healing times, so we were sure to make each choice carefully,” said Peg O’Grady, Asplundh’s administrative director (Silvis, 2019). The interaction between nature and humans inspired the biophilia design for this space (2018, November 8). The use of natural elements and local resources creates an overall sense of peace.

POSITIVE ASSOCIATIONS WITH HEALTHCARE DESIGN INTERVIEWEES: TRACEY ELLIOTT (HEALTHCARE PROVIDER) AND ALY SNOWDEN (PATIENT) DESCRIPTION A healthcare provider and a patient was interviewed in order to reveal human-centered insight to aspects that support them in healthcare environments. Both the provider and the patient were asked to describe their role, day-to-day responsibilities and the environment in which they perform these responsibilities. These images and design implications both literally and figuratively represent these qualities.
DESIGN IMPLICATIONS - Recognize the importance of the patient’s supporter’s role by putting furniture in the rooms for family members and friends. - Provide positive distractions by creating a space for children of all ages to play and interact while waiting. - Create a sense of tranquility throughout the space by using a light color scheme, abundant light and interior elements that emulate nature. - Minimize thresholds in order to maneuver wheelchairs and other adaptive medical equipment quickly and efficiently. - Provide ample storage space for equipment to eliminate distracting clutter and items are easy to retrieve.

Collaboration table placed in the middle of the staff area allows for meetings or learning opportunities for the medical students.
Children’s play area adjacent to the waiting room provides clear sightlines for the caregivers who are waiting.
The reception desk is open to the waiting room which creates a sense of availability between the patients and staff members .
DESIGN IMPLICATIONS
A Dutch door is used to enter the lab provides both privacy and easy access for patients and staff members.
5
A sit to stand desk is versatile and preferred by the physicians for different uses in exam and procedural rooms.
- Allocate space for exam rooms that are larger than normal in order to allow space for five people in the room at a time. - Create a waiting area that exudes a sense of ease by providing positive distractions, such as a children’s play area and interactive art displays. - Patients and caregivers should feel equal within this space so there will be no separation of the “sick” and “healthy” patients in the waiting room. - There will be two procedural rooms in each wing with no natural light in order to provide a space for a patient who may need a dark space. - Promote participation by providing the care providers a space that allows for collaboration while remaining acoustically sound. - Provide safety and privacy by creating two separate pathways within the space, one for the patients and one for the physicians, nurses and staff.
SUITE IMPLICATIONS
The FSU Primary Health Center is an outpatient medical facility, which opened on May 13, 2019. This facility is not like other academic medical facilities because they are not directly on campus and they wanted to be located in an area where a medical facility was needed. The design of the facility focuses on 21st century healthcare design with the intent to collaborate and integrate both behavioral and bio-medical health. Their goal is to double in size in order to provide more space and opportunities to connect with the surrounding community. The medical staff pride themselves on being a community oriented medical facility, and believe that medical assistance is best provided by a team. Furthermore, organization among the medical staff area is imperative for an efficient collaboration space. Currently, the signage is not clear so in order to prevent confusion or frustration in the new space, wayfinding should be prioritized throughout the design process.
DESIGN GOALS & CONCEPT
DESIGN GOALS Doctor Van Durme, the director of the FSU Primary Health Care Clinic, is seeking an innovative design solution that houses an integrated care-team and an interdisciplinary, instructional facility for the medical students. A few successful design solutions include strategically placed wayfinding, spaces that evoke collaboration while protecting the patients’ HIPAA rights, and controlled acoustics in each area. Providing access to the right tools is critical to the success for those in the stressful field of medicine. Primary-care teams build long-standing relationships with entire families, therefore, a sense of community and availability is one of the many important goals for this design. The community room will be located close to the reception area to provide convenient access and to decrease potential pedestrian traffic in each of the two clinical wings. An inviting yet practical arrangement is essential for the design of the clinic. Together, the FSU College of Medicine staff determined that their work is best when delivered by a team. It is crucial to integrate both the behavioral and bio-medical health teams. By doing so, the design will include a large meeting room with a variety of flexible seating and work surface options for the medical team to discuss and learn in each clinical wing. In order to protect private information in these collaborative areas, the acoustically zoning will be controlled with flooring transitions and ceiling heights. Ideally, the final design will create spaces that promote collaboration at the same time still allow for successful assessments while respecting patient privacy.
CONCEPT The concept of this melodious design is the musical term homophony. It is a musical texture in which a primary part is supported by one or more notes that create rhythmic contrast. Together the many different notes work together to create a beautiful, unified tune. The concept influences macro decisions such as spatial arrangements and zoning atmospherics by dividing the clinic into two clinical wings, a reception area, and community learning spaces. Although each space serves different purposes, together they contribute to the ultimate goal of the clinic just as distinctive notes create a melody. Furthermore, Doctor Van Durme could not stress enough the importance of teamwork among his diverse staff. They provide cutting edge medical assistance when collaborating with one another, just as the notes blend together to produce a pleasant tune. Mobile furniture will be used in the medical staff communication rooms and in the community rooms allowing the staff to freely arrange the room which will maximize teamwork and communication. Graphic designs used throughout the space for wayfinding will provide visual comfort for the community as they pass through the halls of the facility. The circulation of the floor plan will include a variety of pathways and sharp angles which will reduce the patients’ anxiety about finding their way. All in all, the homophony of design features orchestrates a harmonious unity of the medical staff, students, and community residents.

COLOR JUSTIFICATION
“It is pure science when we say colors are infused with healing power, and they could influence patient’s response towards medical care and their actual recovery too.” (Silva, 2018) This assertion is evidence suggesting that the color selection is highly influential and crucial to a healthcare design. Under normal situations, when people feel uncomfortable they can leave or change their environment but not in healthcare situations. Patients are held in their environment and have no control over leaving or changing their environment. The extreme white of typical healthcare facilities contributes to that unsettled feeling. However, chromotherapy, or color healing, is the application of beams of colored light to the body to restore imbalance (Anderson, 1975) . The theory of colorology states that colors help assess the level of care, contribute to patient health and help improve overall productivity of the hospital staff. This evidence suggests that colors will not only benefit patients, but caregivers, physicians, nurses and staff as well. For example, the waiting rooms, corridors and reception areas could be painted with cooler tones and accent colors to elicit a feeling of hope and strength whereas rooms where high-energy, stressful interactions take place should have neutral color tones to help create a sense of peace and calming. The paint colors of the design will be a combination of warm and cool toned colors. The field color will be tan while the accent colors will include a variety of blues and greens. Due to the findings above, the color palette, pictured to the right, will be integrated throughout the next phase of this healing space. All in all, the overall blue and green color scheme of the design will help alleviate stress and tension while creating balance within the body and the more neutral colors evoke vitality within the body. (Silva, 2018). The purposeful and creative application of colors within this design will create hopeful spirits in patients and families alike. Staff morale will improve and feelings of welcoming, happiness, stability, and calmness will form. Lastly, the vitalizing colors used in the community service rooms, corridors, and reception area will support the desired atmosphere of positive energy throughout the center.

ART & WAYFINDING
ARTWORK JUSTIFICATION
- Accessible signage which will include a high contrast level between text and background, a low gloss finish on the materials, legible font, and ample sized text/icons. This will reduce confusion and allow the users to navigate the facility quickly and efficiently. - Code required signage must include braille located on the swing side of the door in order for the visually impaired can easily locate it. - Wall mounted signs should protrude no more than 4 from the wall. - Visual strain will be less likely to occur when messages that are at a great distance will consist of large text and have more contrast against the background. - Wayfinding will be supported through implied wayfinding, such as, strategic flooring material changes throughout the space.
One must consider the audience when selecting the artwork for a design. In this instance, the viewers are likely under stress due to their own health concerns or that of a family member or friend. Therefore, the goal is to select art pieces that reduce stress, anxiety and decrease the perception of pain. The art may serve as a distraction from the healthcare issues and instead evoke feelings of hope, strength, and courage. Canvas art using a loose brush stroke to depict healthy and lively foliage will meet this desired goal. The wall art will be in a variety of sizes but none larger than a medium sized canvas. All in all, the art package will essentially aim to alleviate worry and concern while inducing feelings of confidence and bravery. At the same time, the wall hangings will support the design concept and color palette with the combination of warm and cool toned colors and a variety of textures.

CHILDREN’S AREA
Custom feature created with poured rubber incorporates nature and biophilia design within the interior. The nonabrasive material was chosen due to the durability and shock absorbing quality that decrease risk of injury.
The circular light fixture is suspended from the ceiling by aircraft cable wires. The texture of the wall covering is one of the foremost focal points by creating depth and warmth to the play space.
Various sized niches will be placed along the back wall. Each cubby contains an upholstered circular bench that can be taken out, presenting the children with an array of seating options. The use of manipulative toys and furniture appropriate for a wide age range, encourages the children to remain engaged while in the space
A cove wall base will prevent any damages to the wall and facilitates comprehensive maintenance.

ELEVATION DONOR WALL
Custom ceiling feature throughout entire waiting space will have a laminate finish.
Suspended gypsum board ceiling above seating in waiting area will have recessed linear light fixtures. Custom wall-mounted feature created with bronze and glass material. The names of each donor will be etched in the glass. The donors will be divided into categories based on donation amount. Furthermore, the size and style of font will designate each of these categories. The wall will be painted using Wolf Gordon’s scuffmaster paint. A few different seating options, including single-seat, two-seat, and bariatric lounge chairs are available in the waiting area. It is important for the user’s initial experience of the center to have supportive seating for individuals of different shapes and sizes.
A cove wall base will prevent any damages to the wall and facilitates comprehensive maintenance.
25
PERSPECTIVE WAITING ROOM
Upon entering, the reception area should be easily identified. A dropped ceiling above the custom reception desk and the contrast of the light and dark laminate finishes of the desks create an impressionable focal point. In order to avoid confusion and decrease stress, the signage will remain uniform throughout the clinic. Furthermore, the integration of communication technology continues to influence clinic design. Patients will use electronic notepads to input their personal data. The monitors are located near the reception desk, mounted to the wall on a flexible arm so that they can be controlled easily by all users. Additionally, each monitor will have a privacy screen in order to ensure patient’s privacy. The design of the reception and waiting area provides an opportunity for a positive impression.
