Fellow BEYA Attendees:
Welcome to the 37th Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Conference! I hope your experience here will be as impactful for you as it has been for me over the many years that I have attended.
As I reflect on this year’s theme – Becoming Everything You Are – I am reminded of the importance of community. Our community has incredible influence over who we are, what we value and how we lead. It is often the source of inspiration when we are stuck, encouragement when we are down and honesty when we need to face into reality. So, for every opportunity you have to invest in yourself and your career through the seminars and workshops at this year’s conference, I hope you will also consider investing time to expand and strengthen our community.
The societal and technological challenges we face are vast and complex – and they will be solved through communities and partnerships, not through any one individual. From government to industry, and academia to military – solving tomorrow’s problems and driving innovation requires diversity of thought and identity – and it requires everyone’s collaboration. Through the BEYA STEM Conference, you are helping to foster the cooperation and inclusion needed to push our society forward. Thank you.
Lastly, congratulations to the many leaders we will recognize over the next three days, including Dr. Colin Parris, senior vice president and chief technology officer of GE Digital and this year’s Black Engineer of the Year. Thank you, Dr. Parris, for all you have done to advance STEM and for serving as an inspirational role model to STEM talent everywhere.
And to all of you, thank you for joining us.

BOB PRAGADA Chief Executive Officer Jacobs
Hello,
Welcome to the 2023 BEYA Conference – and my first BEYA conference as CEO of Jacobs. It is truly an honor to be a partner and co-sponsor with BEYA: for more than 31 years BEYA has brought together thousands of students, industry leaders, employers, and corporate, government, and military professionals to recognize and celebrate the progress we have made, and to inspire the next generation of thought leaders.
BEYA’s tagline of Becoming Everything You Are reminds me of how vital it is that companies like ours establish a foundational baseline of inclusion in our operating culture. When people feel like they truly belong, that they are not just “accepted” or “included” but empowered, there is simply no limit to who they can be and what we can achieve as a company. At Jacobs we have adopted the STEAM vernacular – expanding the traditional STEM reference to incorporate the “Arts” – to highlight the value that creativity, design and innovation brings to all of our projects, and to help all Jacobs employees see themselves in STEAM. The world around us is changing. Our industry is changing - and it’s changing for the better. Acquisitions and metrics are no longer the key ingredients for business growth, as companies and clients increasingly look to inclusion, sustainability, diversity and ESG as leading indicators of a company’s success.
After the seismic shifts in society and business in the last two years, the rapid pace of change and cultural advancement is no longer novel – adapting to our industry’s accelerated tempo presents challenges and opportunities for us all. We must remain agile and curious and in a constant state of growth as we experiment, fail, learn, and ultimately succeed in transforming our industry and the world around us. By seizing these moments to challenge today and reinvent tomorrow, we have an unprecedented opportunity to develop STEAM industries to create a new world that is not only more connected and sustainable, but also more inclusive, equitable, and accessible for everyone.
That is why this conference is so important. Whether you attend virtually or in person, engaging with the wealth of diverse and underrepresented talent in the STEAM field will help drive lasting, meaningful change as we blaze new trails together and bring more innovative perspectives into the workforce. Our 60,000-strong global Jacobs team shares BEYA’s vision for an innovative, groundbreaking, and rich future for our industry – and we know that actualizing this vision requires diverse perspectives, experiences, and voices.
At Jacobs, our foundational core value “we live inclusion” embraces all perspectives and collaborations to make a positive impact. Through an unparalleled focus on inclusion, with a diverse team of visionaries, thinkers and doers, we build trust in each other and across our company - we call this culture TogetherBeyond.
TogetherBeyond is at the forefront of our business goals and strategy. Building on the foundation of 2020’s Global Action Plan for Advancing Justice and Equality, we continue to identify and address inequalities across the globe. This isn’t only evidenced in the strong partnerships we’ve built with organizations like BEYA, the National Society for Black Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers or the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers: it’s clear in our aspirational goal of achieving 40:40:20 gender balance (40% female, 40% male, 20% any gender) across Jacobs and our focus on supply chain diversity that ensures around 40% of our total spend goes to minority-owned, disadvantaged and small businesses.
I invite all of you to visit the Jacobs booth and join the panel we are hosting during the career fair to learn more about the opportunities, culture, and unique benefits that Jacobs has to offer. Additionally, I encourage you to be bold and engage with the various STEAM organizations, schools, and professionals representing and presenting this weekend. Be curious! Attend speeches, seminars and panels, and ask questions. Take notes, take phone numbers, e-mail addresses and social media handles – expand your network and immerse yourself in the energy of the communities that are represented here this week.
I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunities presented at this conference, and hope to meet and connect with many of you over the coming days.
Enjoy the conference!

Welcome to the 2023 BEYA STEM Global Competitiveness Conference.
Lockheed Martin is proud to partner with Career Communications Group, Inc., and co-host this event with the Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities and USBE&IT magazine.
For 37 years, this conference has been the premier gathering for brilliant minds to connect, for young people to find the right jobs, and where today’s problems meet tomorrow’s problem-solvers. Here, we work to ensure that diverse communities continue to play a central role in shaping the future of global innovation and share in the opportunities available in the high-tech economy of the 21st century. Our hope is that you live the 2023 theme of “Becoming Everything You Are.”
At Lockheed Martin, we know what it takes to solve the world’s most complex challenges. We understand that in order to advance scientific discovery, create revolutionary technologies, and protect lives, our nation must have a strong and diverse workforce. That is why we are grateful that BEYA continues to attract, inspire, and develop the next generation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) trailblazers.
This conference also provides us all an opportunity to honor extraordinary Black leaders who have made a difference in the STEM fields and to thank them for their contributions, leadership, and inspiration to others.
On behalf of my 114,000 teammates, I congratulate all the 2023 award winners – including the 24 Lockheed Martin innovators who will be honored this year. For all those in the BEYA community, I hope that you will be motivated and energized by the people you meet, the stories you hear, and the doors that are open to you.
