B2B & I.T UPDATES By JETHRO LOADER

Since the last edition of the CSG Herald back in December, we have continued developing new functionality and upgrading hardware to ensure our B2B site runs as smoothly as possible. Here are some highlights of the new functionality: - Credit limit data: Under the “Your Account” section you will find “ Credit Status” this page shows you how much credit you have remaining. The calculation includes any items on delivery not so you will not get any nasty surprises. This information updates hourly and payments are processed before midday. - Search results available in list format: Some searches can return a lot of results due to our large product catalogue. To save time navigating through pages of results we have added a link at the top of search result pages which will show as “View Search Results As List”. This will reload your search results as a vertical list without thumbnail images so you can quickly locate the item you need on one page. If you like this method of searching you can continue using it with the normal search box.

- Amend quantities at View Basket: A simple change which a lot of people asked for, you can now change item quantities while viewing your basket. - Derailleur hanger finder: We have a dedicated page under parts and accessories for “hangers” here, you can use drop down boxes to select brand, model and year to tell you exactly which derailleur hanger is needed for a specific bike.

- Reps now have Ipads: We think these are a great tool which means we can get up to date information to you quickly and save paper at the same time. They also allow for greater dexterity when playing “Draw Something” or “Angry Birds”. If you are not already using B2B, or have any suggestions for the site, please contact: Jethro.loader@cyclingsportsgroup.co.uk Tel: 01202 732288 Ext number: 216

- Sale list now has thumbnails: Our sale list has proved very popular but we offer so many bargains that it had become difficult for people to find items of interest to them, so we have added small thumbnail images for each product. You can now quickly recognise these products without having to read the description. - Excel stock feeds: We now provide simple .csv stock feeds which update every 2 hours, these include the product code, barcode, description, stock status and next delivery due date. Links to these can be found in the “Downloads” section on the B2B site.

SPOTLIGHT ON CANNONDALE

EVO CROWNED BEST BIKE IN THE WORLD Renowned throughout the world for the highest laboratory and road testing standards of any magazine (well, they are German, after all...), Tour Magazine have ridden and rated in excess of 2,000(!) bikes over the past decade. Bringing all the data and miles together at the beginning of the year the magazine set itself the goal of finding “The Best Bike in the World”, no easy task as you can imagine. Weeks were spent analysing, questioning, recording, and riding until just one bike remained. In March of this year the Cannondale SuperSix EVO was awarded the ultimate accolade trancing all that stood before it to become just that - Tour Magazine’s “Best Bike in the World”. With complete bikes starting at £3999.99 (SRAM Red) the EVO has astounded journalists with its performance in every test...

“The EVO is an insight into Cannondale’s next generation and if this is the standard to expect, the rest of the bike industry should be very concerned. We can’t find any fault with it; our only regret is we have to give it back.”

Also available in limited numbers as a frameset for £2,399.99 the EVO has now set a new benchmark for price, value and performance that will blow away every consumer that walks through your door.

- Cycling Plus ‘5 out of 5’ Highs: Phenomenally light, fab handling Lows: We don’t yet own one

A HELPING PAW Well, if there was any proof needed to back up the claim that Cannondale make some seriously light bikes then this would surely be it. Finding a rare window of opportunity when it wasn’t lashing it down with rain our marketing manager, Mike Cotty, had a helping hand (or should that be paw) with the photography! Shaving more weight, with a host of exotic components, off of an already impressive Flash Carbon 29er the end result is a featherlight race-ready Flash weighing in at just 17.5lbs. Meow! Once again Cannondale creates the puuurfect ride!

CAAD8 IS KING OF THE HILL With features drawn from its big brother, the CAAD10, with a slightly more forgiving heads-up geometry and the lightest in class fully optimised 6061 aluminium frameset, the CAAD8 is worlds apart from the competition, blowing away the concept of ‘entry level’. Available in Sora, Tiagra and 105 finishing builds (starting at just £749.99) it proved its worth once again when the Tiagra model was duly awarded “King of the Hill” test winner in the July issue of Cycling Active. “The CAAD8 left me with the same positive impressions as did my adored Synapse - inspiring, involving ride with just the right level of road feel and the right amount damped for comfort. There’s something in the essence of the CAAD8 that urges you on - you feel like you’re getting a descent result when you pedal hard - and there’s no greater motivation than that, especially going uphill. Part of the joy of the CAAD8’s comfortable, but lively, geometry and ride quality is that it really makes you feel like a bit of a bike racer, despite the sub £1,000 price bracket.” - Cycling Active

Team news from the number one mountain bike team in the UK - Orange Monkey / Cannondale. With multiple podium positions in the British National Series, and breaking into the top 50 in World Cup events, the team are well and truly punching above their weight. Junior Alex Baker has consistently proved to be one of the very best prospects that the country has to offer, taking second in Round 2 of the BMBS before winning Round 3. Meanwhile Rourke Croeser and Dave Fletcher have been spearheading the elite field, coming tantalisingly close to picking up the team’s first national win. Fletch looked almost certain of this in the third round before a late puncture robbed him of glory! Keep pushing guys, it’s just a matter of time! SPOTLIGHT ON CHARGE

2012 Well... what a year so far! The 2012 range is the first complete model year for the young team at Charge Bikes, and what a success it has been. With rave reviews, test wins and a Best of British award in Stuff Magazine, Charge Bikes continues to grow from strength to strength. Range highlights include: The Cooker Hi taking the win over global big hitters in a classic David vs Goliath battle in MBR Magazine, the Scourer urban bike beating its rivals in a Best Of British test in Cycling Active and the Plug Prestige becoming the Daily Mail’s Fixie bike of choice in an article published in April.

TEST WINNER! “If you want a hardtail that’s brimming with character and showcases steel at its finest, both in term of styling & performance, the Charge Cooker Hi won’t disappoint.”

*

BEST OF BRITISH Back in the April edition of Stuff magazine Charge Bikes were featured in the ‘Best of British’ article. 9 brands were selected, including Jaguar, McLaren (F1), Dyson, Bowers & Wilkins amongst others and of course Charge bikes. Nick Larsen, head of Charge, said “We are extremely honoured to be featured in such an article, in such a special year. Being British is ever popular and we are proud to be representing our fine nation” Check out all the articles above and the fantastic range of products at www.chargebikes.com and follow them at www.facebook.com/chargebikes

GT RACING UK EARN THEIR WINGS, IN A GREAT START TO 2012 By CHRIS HUGHES

2011 saw GT Racing UK compete in a fantastic first year for the team, which saw one rider crowned National Champion for Scotland, another winning the Scottish XC Series, a BMBS round 3rd place, numerous regional wins and top performances at the home World Cup and throughout the British Mountain Bike Series. The 2012 season is proving to be even better! The team switched to all new 2012 GT Zaskar Custom Bikes with 29”wheels to compete with the best our competitors have to offer. New kit from Scottish cycling clothing manufacturer Endura, new sponsors in the way of Accellerade, Lezyne, Schwalbe, and SRAM as well as continuing support from Muc-Off, Eyewear Outlet, FUSE and Crank Brothers.

Ed McParland won the Juniors at a very muddy 2nd round at Dalby We kicked off 2012 with a win at the opening round of the Midlands XC series, then Dave Henderson and Gareth Montgomerie represented GT Racing UK at the Andalucia Bike Race 2012. In a very tough race the boys finished an amazing 10th place overall, placing them as the fastest British team and we later found out they were only 13 seconds down on 9th! A truly fantastic result to the two Scots!! In the Scottish Cross Country Round 1 at Kirroughtree we managed a 1st place for Gareth and 2nd for Dave. We’ve also had some solid results in the British Cross Country Series, Ed McParland winning the Juniors in the mud at Dalby Forest at the 2nd Round. Ed has recently flown to the Czech Republic to represent the United Kingdom at UCI MTB World Cup in Nove Mesto. A truly amazing start to the year, with lots of racing still to come!

Riders who plan to spend long hours in the saddle don’t need some ultra-light, super-stiff, high-performance ride. GT trail bikes are built with this in mind, giving riders who want to spend an entire day (and perhaps part of the night, too) on their bikes a ride that won’t make them want to call mummy. And because it’s a GT, reliability and durability go without saying.

SPOTLIGHT ON GT

We first started making bikes nearly 40 years ago because we wanted to give BMX riders control of their sports destiny. We didn’t just want to make bikes that helped riders go faster, further, and higher then they’d ever gone before. We wanted to make bikes that inspired. Bikes that could, instead of couldn’t. Bikes that gave confidence, instead of took it. Above all, we wanted to make bikes riders could trust when they were putting it all on the line. The riders who inspired us to adopt this philosophy…rode BMX. Nearly 40 years later, we continue to be inspired by BMX riders across the Globe. And as long as they remain committed to the progression of their sport…so will we.

Progression doesn’t end with pavement. No features? No problem. Build your own. With features inspired from Team Rider Dave Dilleward, GT’s BMX Dirt collection was built with those who prefer-tobuild in-mind.

WE ARE FAMILY, ATHERTONS JOIN GT FACTORY RACING... By CHRIS HUGHES

GT Bicycles is proud to announce its partnership with Atherton Racing. Beginning in 2012, the mountain bike race team of Dan, Gee, and Rachel Atherton, will join non-family GT rider Marc Beaumont and form the new team GT Factory Racing. “Atherton Racing is one of the most progressive teams in the history of mountain biking, and is known for taking the sport to the next level,” said Mark Peterman, Global General Manager GT Bicycles. “We’re excited about the partnership because it both continues GT’s legacy as the brand that helps progressive riders push their limits, and because of the opportunities it presents to develop new products.” Over the past five years, Atherton Racing has seen over 50 professional victories and multiple World titles. For the first time, the Atherton team will also include a non-family member with GT rider Marc Beaumont. As a consistent World Cup downhill rider with podiums in some of the world’s greatest Enduro races, Beaumont will compliment Gee on the UCI DH circuit, and Dan on the Euduro circuit, as his focus has shifted towards Enduro-style events. The team will be riding the GT Fury, Sanction, and Force Carbon and Alloy. In addition to racing, the team will provide important product testing feedback and work hand-in-hand with GT on future product advancements and the next evolution of GT mountain bikes. “The new relationship that’s formed between Atherton Racing and GT has opened up so many opportunities for everyone involved, I’m stoked to be going into the next few years of racing being bolstered by a company with

such a passion for the sport, and with a company that’s drive for the top step of the podium, matches that of my own,” said Gee Atherton.

AFTER A LENGTHY ABSENCE, MONGOOSE’S CHRIS AKRIGG IS BACK By CHRIS HUGHES

After taking a 40ft fall off a cliff, Chris Akrigg was in a rather bad way. A shattered femur, broken arm and unscheduled appearance on the Helicopter Heroes TV show was followed by a hospital bed, a lot of un-recreational drugs and a light smattering of metalwork to keep his bones in the right place. That was back in April last year but after months of agonising rehabilitation, he’s finally back on the bike – and in front of the camera!

Can’t keep a Yorkshireman down. A recovering Chris Akrigg

He recently appeared on BBC 1’s Country File riding with presenter Matt Baker and talking a bit about his accident and recovery. Now he is back riding his Mongoose bikes. Currently busy filming in Spain with film maker Victor Lucas, expect great things in the next few months... So watch this space!

While he was off his bike Chris did not waste his recovery time idly watching TV, he was busy putting together his recently launched website, Facebook Page and Twitter account. So now you can keep up to date with what everyone’s favourite tea drinking mountain biker is up too. Chris has recently been in Spain filming his latest edit, ‘The Turning Point’ http://vimeo. com/42557564 chronicling his return from injury and getting back to riding some insane terrain. Worth the wait, if we do say so ourselves. Check it out!

Next on the list for Chris is Goosetrip a Trip to Lyon in France with the rest of the Mongoose Team to film some more mad riding and well just generally have some fun in the sun! www.chrisakrigg.cc

VERSUS - £549.99 As a brand that has always been at the forefront of design and technology it’s good for us to have fun by keeping things interesting and diverse. In 2012 we split the design fundamentals of the Versus straight down the middle. First we have the black glossy version, featuring all black glossy frame, forks and even rims. Then on the flip side we have the matt version, which as you can imagine has a fully matt finished frame and forks but also features matt hubs and rims, a design process that took some real attention but like in everything, it’s the little things that count. The Versus carries a full crmo frameset package with removable brake pivots, sealed front hub and cassette, éclat “Unify” seat, saltplus hinged “Geo” brake lever, 25t – 9t gearing (ideal gearing to accompany 170mm cranks), saltplus “Echo” full CNC alloy sprocket, double wall rims and the salt crank with left and right side sprocket boss.

This year we have worked harder than ever as we hunted down a perfect and beautiful colour way to compliment this breath-taking frame; after searching we decided on a sweet translucent look that simply blows minds. The frame has a butted and tapered down tube and includes a pair of éclat Slash” pedals, saltplus “Trapez” female bolted front hub, saltplus “Delta” full CNC alloy front loader stem, a set of awesome looking twin shaped saltplus “Groove” cromo cranks, the proven saltplus “Echo” full CNC alloy sprocket, wethepeople “The Bel Air” fat padded seat, éclat “Trippin” double wall rim front & rear, and new to this year; an integrated chain tensioner. 8 DAYS, A CHALLENGE BOOK AND 1 RIDE TO GLORY 2012 WINNER Ride To Glory was back for its 5th year and this time it was even bigger and better with the addition of an extra sixth team! Each team spent eight days on the road riding, partying and ticking off the long list of challenges for the prestigious title of Ride To Glory 2012 winners! Their were a few new contenders for this year that made up the six teams competing, which were in no particular order: S&M Bike, BSD, Proper, The Make, Stay Strong and off course our very own WeThePeople.

Here’s some of the WTP team highlights from the week. Day 1: Started out pretty good in Cardiff, plenty of good stuff got done and we found some real good spots. Day 3: Great stuff went down in Waterford, it’s actually got tons of stuff to ride. After the session was up we went to one of the local boozers to tick off the team manager buys the whole team drinks challenge. Day 4: We rode a little flat bank spot in Waterford and then headed to an abandoned factory where we made it onto the roof and got a few good clips. On the way out we nearly got caught by the river police but we got away GTA style along a train track. Day 5: We hit up a pretty fun skatepark in the morning just outside of Dublin to get warmed up. The rain was on and off, which stopped play a few times but we got a good few things some done and ticked off a few challenges again.

The Ride To Glory RULES & CHALLENGE BOOK

The WeThePeople team consisted of Jason Phelan, Peter Sawyer, Mike Curley, Fooman, Maxime Charveron and team manager CSG’s very own Chris ‘ Big Mac’ McArdle.

tick off a few challenges that were easy enough to do. Both Jay and Max got tattoo’s too which was real cool.

Day 6: No one touched their bikes today because of the wet weather, apart from Fooman to tick off the ice over a water gap challenge. After that we decided to use the rain to our advantage and

Jay & Max got RTG Tattoo’s too tick off yet another challenge

The Results: This years 6 teams dodged rain, ate jars of pickled eggs, got spray tans, destroyed the flat bars and ticked off a load more to try and claim the 2012 Ride To Glory title! The 6 teams finally ended up at the at The Source in Hastings for the final stop, where we counted up the points and crowned the 2012 Maoam Ride To Glory champions. WTP came fourth but the team felt like they had the best shots and clips to make a rad edit, which will be out very soon. Don’t forget this is only the start, the full dedicated issue and cover mounted DVD will be out on 15th of July! So Stay tuned.

DAVE HENDERSON’S EUROPEAN ADVENTURES As a full time fire fighter, I have to juggle racing with my annual leave and this year I am trying to maximise my racing abroad to gain experience and hopefully improve fitness. It started with the fantastic Andalucia Stage Race at the end of February which is ridden in pairs over the 6 stages where GT team mate Gareth and I finished 10th overall. www.andaluciabikerace.com/

The Start!

Every good road trip needs a good road trip vehicle

The second instalment was a road trip to Europe. Heading off straight after a disastrous start at Dalby British Series Round 2, it didn’t leave me much time to dwell on it. First up was Bike the Rock Festival in Heubach, Germany (29th April) via a couple of days riding in La Petite Pierre, France. A pre ride of course in over 30 degree heat revealed a super steep long climb followed by an even steeper gnarly descent. I was quite excited about the course. The main challenge would be the heat – especially on the long climb!

In the thick of it!

On race day I didn’t need much of a warm up as it was roasting! I tried to keep cool in the shade while sipping on some Accelerade before making my way to start the line. The pace up the climb was unbelievable. I wanted to pull over and make the pain stop but pushed as hard as I could to the top and back down the other side. It was basically a 10 minute VO max interval with a 3 minute technical descent that had plenty to catch you out and therefore offered little or no respite! From there I settled into my own rhythm knowing that you had to ride this course at your own pace. On the 2nd lap I nipped my Schwalbe Rocket Ron on the descent and lost a lot of air. Fortunately it was fairly close to the tech zone and there was enough air left to slowly get me there. The tyre sealed no problem with a track pump and I was soon off again. I managed to make up a few positions finally finishing in 36th. Despite the horrible pain I loved the course and wanted to do it again almost immediately. I`ll definitely be looking to do it again next year!

The next race on the agenda was the Swiss Cup in Solothurn a week later (5th May) after some riding in Munster Valley and La Bresse. I raced a Swiss Cup in Basel last year and I was really impressed by the organisation, support and attendance at it. Solothurn didn’t disappoint. The course was fairly urban with a loop through the forest. It was super fast and tactical riding would definitely play a part. As the very last number in the field (89) I was pleasantly surprised to gain a better gridding around mid pack. This really helped as the race was stretched out almost immediately. I was holding a good position in the top 40 after the first lap when I crashed on the descent pushing too hard. I got going again but rolled my tyre which sealed with a CO2 canister but went down again, changed my wheel in the tech zone but got another slow flat which I had to stop to blow up! Meanwhile I was loosing lots of positions! Sometimes its just not your day! Despite this I got a great workout gritting my teeth until the end to finish 61st. Not a great result but a great experience. Then it was the long drive back to Edinburgh and inevitably back to work. It was a great trip, gaining an insight to riding in the continent full time. My final final block of international racing (and the last of my annual leave for the year!) will be at the World Cup rounds in Mont Saint Anne and Windham. I can`t wait! Thanks to all our sponsors for the continued support.

SAGAN “THE TERMINATOR” JUST KEEPS ON WINNING By MIKE COTTY

Still just the tender age of 22, ex Junior Mountain Bike World Champion turned Liquigas-Cannondale professional, Peter Sagan seems to have the midas touch in practically every race he enters. Starting the season in superb form Sagan was a stand out rider in the early classics, winning in the 3 Days of De Panne before taking second and third in Gent-Wevelgem and Amstel Gold respectively. For such a young rider this is nothing short of monumental but Sagan wasn’t content. In the Tour of California it may have appeared to be a one-man race to spectators as Sagan scorched across the line aboard his SuperSix EVO no less than 5 times (out of 8 stages) to become the rider with the most wins ever in the history of the race. We have a feeling there is (much, much) more to come.

in the race as well). Meanwhile Ivan Basso finished a credible 5th in the Giro d’Italia, vowing to make another bid for the Maglia Rosa or Maillot Jaune before the end of his career. Speaking of the Tour de France, it’s nearly three week carnival time in France again with the team poised to support Nibali in a bid for overall victory and of course “The Terminator” in stage victories. At the time of going to print Liquigas-Cannondale are currently #2 in the UCI World Tour ranking with Nibali 3rd and Sagan 5th in the individual rider classification.

Sagan of Liquigas-Cannondale crashed and punctured a tyre on a wicked descent, but recovered to win Stage 2 of the race in Santa Cruz

Equally impressive in the first half of the season, the experienced Vincenzo Nibali had his best ever classics campaign finishing a brilliant 3rd place in Milano-Sanremo before hammering the competition to win the overall classification in Tirreno-Adriatic (incidentally Sagan picked up a stage win

THE CSG HERALD, Summer Edition 2012

Every year Charge co-sponsors an XC enduro event run by SpamBiking in Devizes, Wiltshire. There are 3 events; 12:00 to 00:00,12:00 to 18:00 and lastly 18:00 to 00:00. Charge entered 2 teams: Charge A consisting of team riders Chris Metcalfe, Jon Watson and Neil Cousins. They were backed up by Rapha model, Phoebe Sneddon. Charge B saw Nick Larsen and Abi Greenaway team up with Kye and Leo Forte. Kye is a Red Bull sponsored BMX rider (also former dirt jump World Champ) and Leo is his smooth riding, bmx jumping brother.

Charge A won the mixed teams comfortably and would have placed 4th in the all male teams too. Charge B were second in the mixed but, most importantly, beat the Red Bull mens team by 14seconds. A big thanks to the other sponsors Giro from Madison Distribution and Red Bull for the DJ, tent and number boards. Here’s to next year!!

Charge B team member Abi Greenaway battles through part of the Erlestoke course.

The course was 75% singletrack and of that, 90% of the time was spent on that lovely singletrack. Lots of tight twisty bends and naturally bermed corners were the order of the day and it was singlespeed friendly (just about). The weather was fantastic with the mercury hitting 29ÂşC and the blazing sun beating down on the open sections of the course. This made conditions tough for the soloists out there who took on more and more electrolytes to prevent the impending headaches.

As a full time fire fighter, I have to juggle racing with my annual leave and this year I am trying to maximise my racing abroad to gain experience and hopefully improve fitness. It started with the fantastic Andalucia Stage Race at the end of February which is ridden in pairs over the 6 stages where GT team mate Gareth and I finished 10th overall. Turn to Page 52
