HUSSEIN CHALAYA
RECTANGLEJAUNE
the mechanics OF FASHION
The most exhaustive exhibition by the world-renowned designer at İstanbul Modern as part of the İstanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture events
78
des i g n special
Previously presented at the Design Museum, London and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, the touring exhibition curated by Donna Loveday brings together fashion collections, installations and films produced by Hussein Chalayan between the years 1994 and 2010. Inspired by architecture, philosophy, science, history, anthropology, biology and technology, these works reflect Chalayan’s views on a range of themes including genetics,
technological progress, displacement, migration and cultural identity. Chalayan uses fashion as an area for exploration, where concepts find an expression, he challenges the preconceived notions about the meaning of clothing. Inspired by ideas drawn from disciplines not readily associated with fashion, and motivated by the political, social and economic realities of today, he creates designs that move, live, transform mechanically in a million ways and therefore explore his conceptual ideas, with a philosophical approach.
79
HUSSEIN CHALAYA
RECTANGLEJAUNE
Born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1970, Chalayan was educated in Cyprus and later in London. In 1993, he graduated from Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London where his highly inventive graduate collection, The Tangent Flows, attracted strong interest. The collection featured silk dresses that had been covered in iron filings, buried in the ground for months and then exhumed. The collection later featured in the window of the London retailer Browns, and helped to launch Chalayan as a new designer with a reputation for innovation. He launched his own label in 1994 and, since then, has twice been named British Designer of the Year.
"Chalayan uses fashion as an area for exploration, he challenges the preconceived notions in the meaning of clothing..." 80

Istanbul MODERN Located in a converted warehouse in Tophane district on the Bosphorus, Istanbul Modern is the first of its kind in Turkey. Istanbul Modern’s exhibition spaces occupy 2 main areas. The Museum’s Permanent Collection is housed on the Upper Floor Galleries. In order to create interesting alternatives for visitors to interpret and relate to the artworks on display, they are rotated and grouped according to different themes every year. 82
The spacious Lower Floor Gallery hosts 3 to 4 Temporary Exhibitions annually. These include a Retrospective Exhibition, a survey of modern Turkish artists, and an international Contemporary Art Exhibition. The Museum’s educational programs are designed to enhance awareness and appreciation of the artworks, featured in both the Permanent Collection and the Temporary Exhibition galleries. The themes and activities of these programs, along with those of the movie center, café, Museum store and mobile Museum, vary in conjunction with every new exhibition.
DO NOT MISS >The Fabulous Cafe by the Bosphorus, with its tantalizing dishes... >The Museum Library famous for its "books on the ceiling", but also has an extensive choice of works... istanbulmodern.org
Museum Hours: Tuesday - Sunday: 10.00 - 18.00 Thursday: 10.00 - 20.00 Closed on Mondays. Free Admission on Thursdays.
