Red Rocks Community Hub and Spa: Denver, CO Rachel Jupina ID 426 April 30th, 2020
Concept The concept behind this public building and space is to create spaces where people can feel active within themselves and with others. The people of Denver are very active physically and this community building allows for them to be active in other ways. One can take part in self care through meditation and relaxation but also through social gathering with other people. This will be done through different levels of intimacy. Users can choose to be by themselves or join in with other people. Intimacy also connects to privacy. There are options to close yourself off and options to be in an open and lively space. These options allow for the space to be very adaptable to different people’s needs. With different levels of intimacy there has to be spaces that are in the middle of this spectrum as well. Users are able to be to themselves but have the prospect of the lively space. Acts of compression and expansion also help to acclimate people to the space. Additionally, there is a spa located on the top levels which gives a vertical separation between the public space and the more intimate space of a spa. Bringing a spa into the public space allows for health and wellness to be brought right into the forefront of the design. The use of meditation pods that people can explore bring in mindfulness as well. The layer of options and spaces allows for this building to be adaptable and used by many different types of people.

Lower Lounge The lower lounge is a space that is more intimate than the main public space. This is where people can come when they want to get away from the action and have a cup of coffee. This area also offers alcoholic beverages in the evenings. This quieter area acts as a bridge between the main public space and the spa above. It can be a good social area but also more subdued. -

Appendix: Elsewhere Project In this project I play with the idea of emulating a memory into an abstract space. I take the memory of looking at the ceiling of an ornate church and use that feeling to design this space. I played with layering elements and creating a space where the user compresses and expands as they move through. The layering elements helped to inspire my community space design.
