From The Editor’s Desk... It’s indeed a joyful moment that the sixth petal of BLOSSOMS has bloomed fresh and new and has reached your hands. A message for my final year student friends who are passing out this month – as young graduates, always try to give your best to the society, to those around you, in all ways possible. Educate the less fortunate brothers and sisters of your neighbourhood, at least in the smallest measure. Work with commitment and dedication wherever you are employed. Speak with politeness and courtesy to your colleagues. Respect your seniors- their age and their experience. Keep yourselves flexible and open-minded always. With all these qualities, I am sure you will succeed in your life and in your career. With Best Wishes, Ms.V.Malar, Dept. of English.
Principal’s Message
Dear Readers,
President’s Message
The Management is glad to see the BLOSSOMS team of our college coming out with the sixth issue.
I congratulate the Editorial Team for having brought out the sixth issue of BLOSSOMS successfully. Also, I congratulate the contributors of Articles for this issue. I hope our students would continue to give more useful articles for BLOSSOMS. Dr. R. Srinivasan, Principal, SLCS
As the promoter of this college, I continue to work towards giving value education to our students that can fetch them a job as they successfully complete the course. As part of this exercise we are starting three year degree courses on Networking and Television Production from the academic year 2011-12. We have also applied to the University for conducting various Diploma courses on 2D, 3D Animation, Jewellery designing and also a PG Diploma on Supply Chain Management. These courses will mostly be conducted during the evening hours to accommodate the candidates who are already working / employed. The closure of the schools and colleges for the academic year is fast approaching and the students are either writing the examinations or will write the exams very shortly. Time is ripe for the students and their parents to decide on the future studies. The important aspects to be weighed for taking an informed decision are as follows: •
The children’s area of interest and the field in which they are strong.
•
What is the goal of the children and what do they want to achieve in life?
•
Have the children decided on the choice after considering all the information available?
•
By completing the degree, ultimately, will the children become employable and get settled in life?
The criterion for becoming employable is that the student must develop himself a “marketable resource” based on his subject knowledge, skill and communication. Our college provides the required opportunity and atmosphere to become employable; any student working hard during his or her stay in our campus will succeed. We can proudly say that we are not collecting any Capitation fee or we are not into profiteering by conducting our job oriented courses. I take this opportunity to prevail upon the readers and parents to help the prospective college students in selecting the studies that will make them employable. The Management also requests the passed out students to be the ambassadors of our college and promote our job oriented courses. I recall my speech wherein we have invited them to become the Counsellors for our various degree programmes, if they have a passion for marketing. Dr. R. Lakshmipathy President, SLF (Always in service to our Motherland)
Director’s Message To be successful in professional life and social life, one must be diplomatic in his interactions with others, maintain agreeable relationships with all as far as possible, never offend anybody, see other man’s point of view and use it for one’s benefit, be guarded in one’s thought, speech and action and be empathetic. Dr. M.D. Manoharan, Director, RLIMS

LET US LEARN TO SWIM Water is one of the five elements without which survival is not possible for all living things. Our body contains 80% of fluid (60% water 20% fat or lipid and 20% solid [structural and locomotor bones]). Several thousands of years ago, the people in India learnt the possibility of floating and moving through water from Lord Maha Vishnu who is floating with the buoyant support (Sri Aadhi Seshan). The sidestroke, which resembles the Maha Vishnu’s lying posture, is known as Indian stroke used by lifesavers and combat personnel. Swimming itself is a sport. Swimming skill is mandatory and it acts as a gateway to several sports such as Snorkelling, Springboard Diving, SCUBA diving, Synchronised swimming, yachting, surfing, wind surfing, kite surfing, sailing, canoeling, kayaking, rowing, mariners, fishing vessel workers, water skiing, water polo, and emergency responders such as water rescue technicians and firefighters. Swimming is used

as recreational, fitness & health beneficial activities. You need to be proficient in this if you like to be an astronaut to experience the weightlessness in the vaccum space. Swimming, one form of water exercise, is also a therapeutic activity recommended for people who are improving from operations and injuries. It also helps minimize physical stress caused due to other exercises such as running or other hardwork. Most of the exercises you do on the ground or even in gymnasium can be mimicked in the pool with low or no risk of stress or impact. Swimming is most effective to improve Cardio (Heart) vascular (lungs) and muscular endurance conditioning in a single attempt. We are meant to live on the land but we are poor in manoevering skills when compared to land animals. But we are confident without minding these deficiencies and controlling all of them. At the same time we are blessed with various positive factors to adapt to water movements. One is Specific Gravity. (Specific gravity of pure water is 1.000, Salt water 1.024, Ice 0.917, Air 1.21 Ă— 10-3, Fat 0.85, Average Human body 0.97). The specific gravity of water is 1 and the specific gravity of human beings is less than one. Specific gravity less than 1 floats and greater than this number sinks
(however it varies from person to person according to their muscle build-up and bone density). People with more muscle mass including females can float easily. So, the next time when you go for pool activities, do not build up fear and limit your movements. The next one is Resistance. Our activities are revolved around centre of gravity on land whereas in water, centre of buoyancy. As water’s viscosity or thickness is approxmately 850 times denser (molecules are closely packed together) or heavier than air, our body gets more resistance/pressure from all directions whether we are in still condition or moving. In particular, the faster you move to keep yourself afloat/jump high, the more resistance you will meet. The increased resistance to movement provides more muscle strength and endurance that can be easily achieved on land by people with limitations on their motor organs (legs, arms). In the vertical or upright workouts, such as water walking/jogging, more body parts are exposed to water and thus the resistance is maximum during forward movements. This helps you strengthen your muscles better than horizontal swimming. The constant pressure of water on human body exerted evenly in all directions makes ideal for working opposing muscle groups equally.
The buoyancy makes us feel lighter than on land and the pressure that compresses the chest makes breathing harder. Thus the muscles involved in breathing toil harder and the heart will based beat faster, while exercising, to provide the extra oxygen required by the body. Pool based activities are the only form of non-weight bearing exercise that needs to burn more energy. A five to ten minute swim for a good swimmer is roughly equivalent to a four km run (without the dangers of sudden stops and falls). The buoyancy (lift) or floating effect of water, one of the supporting properties of water, is good intermediator of unloading weight on weight bearing joints such as ankle, knee, hip, spine and supporting tissues of our body. Buoyancy supports upward movement and resists downward movements that act as a non-stressful agent and increases mobility and freedom. This buoyancy helps us to experience the weightlessness in the water that leads to improve range of movements on joints and without causing surplus stress on damaged tissues. When you stand in chin depth of water approximately 90%, chest deep 70% and waist deep 50% of your weight is eliminated i.e. supported by buoyancy that helps a lot to the people who have physical limitations such as low back pain (lbp) and arthritis. For

people suffering from low back pain and less tolerant to upright posture or gravitational stress, swimming is a boon. When we submerge in a pool, we experience a kind of weightlessness. In water, gravity is easily overcome and our body is relieved from the constant pull of gravity. And another important thing is that buoyancy and resistance provide us as a source of hard work. The harder you push, walk or jog, the harder you are working. As buoyancy lessens the effect of gravity, it is easier for your blood to pump up back to heart. Buoyancy and resistance act as cushions for your body. That’s why pool based activities are generally called liquid gym exercises. The shape and structure of human body is also a factor in receiving buoyant force. More support from buoyancy (plus minimized resistance) is received when the part of body reaches horizontal position. Things with a larger surface will have moe upward pressure. That’s why floating or swimming on horizontal position is easier than vertical position. In addition, if the lungs (least dence part of the body = the most buoyant part of the body) are submerged, buoyancy will increas. Swimming in cold water, especially in South India’s wintertime pool activity, is good for increasing body’s resistance to viral and bacterial infections. Rubbing of muscles is generally called massage. Water is denser than air and has a hydrostatic effect. Our movements in water or swimming gently knead our body and tone up the whole body, stimulate touch receptors on our skin that will give massage like feeling and benefits. When there is bleeding, it is common practice to apply pressure and elevate the bleeding part

water is your

share the same spirit as the water, and it will help you more”
- Alexander Pope V above heart level to minimize the blood loss. When this is compared, swimming activities are performed on horizontal body position that boosts blood circulation because all organs are at heart level. In addition to zero impact, swimming and deep-water exercises are very effective for the core muscles which play a primary role in good posture, alignment and carriage, muscle strength, flexibility and endurance. The calories burnt by running 6 km per hour is equal to swimming an hour at moderate speed. It is a whole-body workout. Swimming and other pool-based activities provide good relief for the people suffering from sleeping disorder. Swimming or movements in water provides low impact in shallow water and no impact on joints when involving every muscle and joint in deep water; so it reduces pain and prevents reconditioning, increased range of motion (RoM), increased flexibility and increased tolerance to activity, improves body and mind coordination. In addition to the four Olympic recognised swim strokes, variety of pool based exercises can be done such as cycling action, dog paddling, Deep Water Running (DWR), shallow water walking, treading water, pulling and pushing water with arms and legs. prevents injuries and removes boredom. Walking or jogging in water maintaining head up and spine straight position promotes full range of movements. Water activities or performance transition from land to water will serve you as highly effective calorie burner and very good cross training. Aggressive water exercises will help to tone hip and major muscles. Swimming decreases the level of stress hormones, improves blood pressure and provides good relaxation as water has shooting and therapeutict effect. Water clams and relaxes all parts our body including heart, lungs, abs and endocrine system (secreting system) by exciting the nerve reflexes (bundle of fibres conveying impulses of sensation or motion between brain and other parts of the body) in the spinal cord. And it reduces stress and anxiety. When a person of 75kg runs, approximately four-fold impact is caused on joints. Aquatic jogging/ running is impact free – but it is not exertion free. In any situation, if pain starts, stop and seek advice from exercise provider before going to advanced level. Swimming, deep water jogging or other water-based activities are high calorie burning activity, beneficial to the doers that help improve fitness, lose weight, recover from injury, improve mobility or ease limitations of some medical conditions. In swimming, the whole body is exposed to water and its pressure to make efficient locomotion. Swimming and water exercises involve both agonist and antagonist muscles that are effective for building muscles. If you do not know to swim or do any aquatic exercise simple flexing of 8

your knees, hips and walking will also help you. Water Exercise or Aquatics: The last generation played and worked a lot out of home based activities that strengthened not only their bodies but also their bones and muscles. So, their joints had capacity to bear impacts while on weight bearing workouts including climbing. The present generation plays no outdoor activities thus the hip size became larger than their chest size that further encourages inactivity. For such people water workout will be a boon to slim down or get into good shape in a faster way without jarring joints. For the senior people, working in water is the most safest for joints and efficient method of burning calories. An hour workout can burn between 400 and 600 calories. Water exercises are used in the form of medical treatment for the people suffering from tight, sore muscles, shoulder, knee and hip pain and many other physical limitations. The most important is that swimming or other water activities dissolve all depressions to make one feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Water excites every one of us. Just simple backfloat will provide you much relaxation, walking, jagging which preserves upright position in shoulder deep water will help your structure of the body in a natural condition. Shoulder pain makes poor posture, scattered muscle and uneasiness in movement to the sufferer. Water exercises are prescribed to such people to increase exercise tolerance, if they are not able to respond to common ground exercises. Walking and jogging, swinging arms and legs in shoulder or chest deep water is known as basic aerobic activities. To do such activities no swimming skills are
required. Water exercises are very good choice for all levels of fitness as you are in gravity eliminated environment. Body temp: Our body creates surplus heat during any exercise including pool activity. Activities moderately or vigorously done in water causes our body to fluid loss mainly through sweat but we don’t release it in water. This keeps us very comfortable in water. Because of this, people think that activities done in water are not as rich as ground based activities – a wrong perception. It is true that activities done while immersed in water scatters body heat more effectively than air since water is good conductor of heat. Fluid loss from our body should not be ignored. So replenish with pure water to avoid dehydration. Lighting safety in water: Water is not only good solvent but also a good conductor of electricity. Lighting produces several thousand volts of current. So avoid water activity during lighting. If you have any specific exercise limitations please stick to that. Water is truly the essence of life. Get wet soon to get into shape who knows that may transform you to an athlete or astronaut.

Come, let’s change your life! When we look at the list of changes we want to make in our life, they may include: 1.Losing weight 2.Getting over our fear 3.Increasing our self-esteem 4.Improving our love-life 5.Feeling less depressed and more satisfied with our life 6.Learning to cope with work stress 7.Freeing ourselves from the burden of our past These are some of the difficult issues that people usually face. Whether our list matches the one above or not, it may be quite challenging. For many people, change is too challenging and too difficult. Therefore, they keep recycling their list of desired changes from one year to the next. How does a person change his life when will-power doesn’t work? When will-power fails, where do we turn? People often turn to professionals to help facilitate the changes they desire. Licensed Professional Counsellors, Psychologists and Clinical social workers specialize in guiding people through the process of change. They help people mobilize their own inner resources toward their desired outcome. But, before you take our list of frustrations to a therapist there are two key points we may want to consider. First, not all therapeutic approaches are equal; and second, the way a person approaches their counsellor can determine a lot
about how successful they would be. Over the years, many counselling methods have been developed to help people who seek a change in their life. Some therapies only pay attention to behaviour; others to thinking or to discharging feelings. Some approaches are keen on listening without giving feedback while others seek to analyze and explain every aspect of one’s life. Now, more research is being done to determine what is and is not effective in helping people create positive change in their lives. New therapeutic methods are being examined and proving more effective than anything before. Two of the most effective approaches include Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and experiential FOCUSING. The second consideration is how a person approaches counselling. Several years ago, Dr. Eugene Gendlin conducted research to determine what makes counselling effective. His most startling discovery was that the way a person approaches their counselling, how they process their problems in counselling can indicate whether they will be successful or not. He identified several things that were common to people who did well in counselling including: 1) the tendency to tune-in to how the body senses and experiences a problem, 2) the willingness to listen to the feedback that their mind was giving them through those physical sensations and 3) the skill to clarify the meaning contained in that body language. This ability
to tap into their own tremendous wisdom at a mind-body level, to gain new insights and to shift feelings has been found among people who are the most successful in counselling. Once this was identified, Dr. Gendlin was further able to train freshman psychology students to listen to these factors in the audio tapes of thousands of initial counselling sessions. His students were then able to predict who would be successful in creating the change they wanted. Dr. Gendlin eventually was able to teach people how to approach their counselling in the same way that most successful people do. Now that people can be taught how to work in therapy to increase their chances for success and with the advent of newer, more effective counselling methods, new hope for positive change exists. Tools like these put more positive results within people’s reach.

Eternal Truth of Life 1. Don’t compare yourself with anyone in the world; if you compare you are insulting yourself. 2. No one can manufacture a lock without a key; similarly,God won’t give problems without solutions. 3. Life laughs at you, when you are unhappy, life smiles at you
when you are happy, life salutes you when you make others happy. 4. Every successful person has a painful story, every painful story has a successful ending, accept the pain and get ready for success. 5. Easy is to judge the mistake of others, Difficult is to recognize our own mistakes. It is easier to protect your feet with slippers than to cover the earth with carpet. 6. No one can go back and change a bad beginning, but anyone can start now and create a successful ending. 7. If a problem can be solved, no need to worry about it; if a problem cannot be solved, what is the need of worrying? 8. If you miss an opportunity, don’t fill the eyes with tears; it will hide another better opportunity in front of you. 9. Changing the face can change nothing; but facing the change can change everything. 10. Don’t complain about others; change yourself if you want peace. 11. Mistakes are painful if they happen, but years later, collection of mistakes is called experience which leads to success. 12. Be bold when you lose, and be calm when you win. Heated gold becomes ornament, beaten copper becomes wires, depleted stone becomes a statue; so, the more pain you get in life, the more valuable you become.

Microsoft Silverlight Tool Microsoft Silverlight is an application framework for writing and running business and media applications (rich Internet applications), with features and purposes similar to those of Adobe Flash. The run-time environment for Silverlight is available as a plugin for most web browsers. While early versions of Silverlight focused on streaming media, current versions support multimedia, graphics and animation, and give developers support for CLI languages and development tools. Silverlight provides a retained mode graphics system similar to Windows Presentation Foundation, and integrates multimedia, graphics, animations and interactivity into a single runtime environment. In Silverlight applications, user interfaces are declared in Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) and programmed using a subset of the .NET Framework. XAML can be used for marking up the vector graphics and animations. Silverlight can also be used to create Windows Sidebar gadgets for Windows Vista Silverlight supports H.264 video, Advanced Audio Coding, Windows Media Video (WMV), Windows Media Audio (WMA) and MPEG Layer III (MP3) media content across all supported browsers without requiring Windows Media Player, the Windows Media Player ActiveX control or Windows Media browser plug-ins. Because 12

Windows Media Video 9 is an implementation of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) VC-1 standard, Silverlight also supports VC-1 video. According to the End user license agreement VC-1 and H.264 are only licensed for the “personal and noncommercial use of a consumer”. Silverlight, since version 3, supports the playback of H.264 video. Silverlight makes it possible to dynamically load Extensible Markup Language (XML) content that can be manipulated through a Document Object Model (DOM) interface, a technique that is consistent with conventional Ajax techniques. Silverlight exposes a Downloader object which can be used to download content, like scripts, media assets or other data, as may be required by the application. With version 2, the programming logic can be written in any .NET language, including some derivatives of common dynamic programming languages like IronRuby and IronPython
Silverlight Architecture When a client initially attempts to run a Silverlight application, if the Silverlight plug-in has not been installed on the client machine, it will be downloaded and installed. Upon subsequent requests to run the application, the application will instantiate on the client machine and make requests for resources from the server only when necessary. The Silverlight plug-in can be thought of as a scaled-down version of the full .NET Framework. It only contains those classes and functionality that are applicable to a Silverlight Web client and those were streamlined and optimized for use on the Web client machine.
Silverlight was designed using the same design paradigm as ASP. NET. Each page of a Silverlight application includes an associated code behind file that includes the code that handles events fired by the page. Silverlight resembles WPF in that it uses Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) to construct the user interface (presentation layer). As Silverlight applications are composed of text-based files that include markup and code, they can be created using any text editor; however, more advanced tools and development environments such as Visual Studio or Expression Blend simplify the task significantly.
Silverlight Technologies Version 1.0 of Silverlight used JavaScript and supported the industry-leading Windows Media Services enabling delivery of audio and video that includes 2D and vector graphics. Version 2 includes all features of version 1.0 and: • support for the .NET Framework. • support for .NET-compliant programming languages such as C#, Visual Basic, Python, and Ruby. • support for database operations and language-integrated query (LINQ).
Silverlight Hosting Microsoft Silverlight functionality is completely encapsulated within the Silverlight plug-in. Web applications typically require the server hosting the Web application to meet minimum requirements. Silverlight applications simply require a Web server to be
equipped as they would be for hosting HTML documents. Silverlight applications can be hosted on any Web server accessible to the target audience. The two most commonly used Web servers are Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and Apache. Executing a Silverlight application on a Web client machine is a two step process. First, the application will detect if the Silverlight plugin is installed on the Web client machine. If the plug-in is not installed, the user will be prompted with an option to download the plug-in. If the user opts to do so, a request will be made of the Web server to download and install the plug-in. The Silverlight plug-in is embodied in a .dll executable file that is loaded into the Web client browser memory once installed. The only interaction required by the Web client when installing the Silverlight plug-in is to grant permission for the plug-in to be installed. Various Web servers, including Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS), may require slight configuration modifications so that the Silverlight executable file will be downloaded to the Web client when requested. Second, once the Silverlight plugin is installed on the Web client machine, the Silverlight application itself must be downloaded. A Silverlight application may consist of many types of files. Slight configuration modifications may be necessary
on the Web server, such as MIME types, so that XAML and XAP files are associated with Silverlight and downloaded correctly to the Web client machine when requested. Once the Silverlight plug-in is installed on a Web client machine and a Silverlight application is downloaded, the Silverlight application is then hosted on the Web client machine. There are some requirements necessary for the Web client machine as discussed in the sections below, however all media players, audio and video codecs, compilers and the runtime
machines. Silverlight applications run within the confines of a plugin. There are many benefits to using a plug-in with the primary benefit being consistency across implementations. A plug-in application can provide a consistent result in every instance where it is supported. Other plug-in solutions, such as Adobe Flash, have become popular due to consistency across implementations. For instance, a plug-in application should deliver a consistent result regardless of whether it is displayed using Internet Explorer on Windows or Safari on a Macintosh. Silverlight 2 is currently supported on the platforms discussed below Platforms that Silverlight 2

GREAT ARTISTS-II L eonardo da Vinci (April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519) was an Italian polymath: painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist and writer. Leonardo has often been described as the archetype of the Renaissance Man, a man of “unquenchable curiosity” and “feverishly inventive imagination”. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. According to art historian Helen Gardner, the scope and depth of his interests were without precedent and “his mind and personality seem to us superhuman, the man himself mysterious and remote”. Marco Rosci points out, however, that while there is much speculation about Leonardo, his vision of the world is essentially logical rather than mysterious, and that the empirical methods he employed were unusual for his time.
Leonardo da Vinci
Born the illegitimate son of a notary, Piero da Vinci, and a peasant woman, Caterina, at Vinci in the region of Florence, Leonardo was educated in the studio of the renowned Florentine painter, Verrocchio. Much of his earlier working life was spent in the service of Ludovico il Moro in Milan. He later worked in Rome, Bologna and Venice and spent his last years in France, at the home awarded him by Francis I. Leonardo was and is renowned primarily as a painter.
Among his works, the Mona Lisa is most famous and most parodied portrait and The Last Supper the most reproduced religious painting of all time, with their fame approached only by Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam. Leonardo’s drawing of the Vitruvian Man is also regarded as a cultural icon, being reproduced on everything from the euro to text books to t-shirts. Perhaps fifteen of his paintings survive, the small number due to his constant, and frequently disastrous, experimentation with new techniques, and his chronic procrastination.Nevertheless, these few works, together with his notebooks, which contain drawings, scientific diagrams, and his thoughts on the nature of painting, compose a contribution to later generations of artists only rivalled by that of his contemporary, Michelangelo. Leonardo is revered for his technological ingenuity. He conceptualised a helicopter, a tank, concentrated solar power, a calculator, the double hull and outlined a rudimentary theory of plate tectonics. Relatively few of his designs were constructed or were even feasible during his lifetime, but some of his smaller inventions, such as an automated bobbin winder and a machine for testing the tensile strength of wire, entered the world of manufacturing unheralded. As a scientist, he made important discoveries in anatomy, civil engineering, optics, and hydrodynamics, but his failure to publish his findings meant that his influence on these fields is not well documented by historians Blossoms

Childhood (1452–1466) Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452, “at the third hour of the night”in the Tuscan hill town of Vinci, in the lower valley of the Arno River in the territory of Florence. He was the illegitimate son of the wealthy Messer Piero Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci, a Florentine legal notary, and Caterina, a peasant. Leonardo had no surname in the modern sense, “da Vinci” simply meaning “of Vinci”: his full birth name was “Lionardo di ser Piero da Vinci”, meaning “Leonardo, (son) of (Mes)ser Piero from Vinci”.The inclusion of the title “ser” indicated that Leonardo’s father was a gentleman. Little is known about Leonardo’s early life. He spent his first five years in the hamlet of Anchiano in the home of his mother, then from 1457 lived in the household of his father, grandparents and uncle, Francesco, in the small town of Vinci. His father had married a sixteen-yearold girl named Albiera, who loved Leonardo but died young.Leonardo received an informal education in Latin, geometry and mathematics but did not show any particular signs of aptitude. When Leonardo was sixteen his father married again, twentyyear-old Francesca Lanfredini. It was not until his third and fourth marriages that Ser Piero produced legitimate heirs. In later life, Leonardo only recorded two childhood incidents. One, which he regarded as an omen, was when a kite dropped from the sky and hovered over his cradle, its tail feathers brushing his face. The second occurred while exploring in the mountains. He discovered a cave and was both terrified that some 16

great monster might lurk there, and driven by curiosity to find out what was inside.
Professional life (1476–1513) Florentine court records of 1476 show that Leonardo and three other young men were charged with sodomy, and acquitted. From that date until 1478 there is no record of his work or even of his whereabouts. In 1478 he left Verroccio’s studio and was no longer resident at his father’s house. One writer, the “Anonimo” Gaddiano claims that in 1480 he was living with the Medici and working in the garden of the Piazza San Marco in Florence. In January 1478 he received his first independent commission, to paint an altarpiece in 1478 for the Chapel of St Bernard in the Palazzo Vecchio and The Adoration of the Magi in March 1481 for the Monks of San Donato a Scopeto. Neither important commission was completed, the second being
interrupted when Leonardo went to Milan. In 1482 Leonardo, who according to Vasari was a most talented musician, created a silver lyre in the shape of a horse’s head. Lorenzo de’ Medici sent Leonardo, bearing the lyre as a gift, to Milan, to secure peace with Ludovico il Moro, Duke of Milan. At this time Leonardo wrote an often-quoted letter to Ludovico, describing the many marvellous and diverse things that he could achieve in the field of engineering and informing the Lord that he could also paint. Leonardo continued work in Milan between 1482 and 1499. He was commissioned to paint the Virgin of the Rocks for the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception, and The Last Supper for the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie. While living in Milan between 1493 and 1495 Leonardo listed a woman called Caterina among his dependents in his taxation documents. When she died in 1495, the list of funeral expenditures suggests that she was his mother. Leonardo worked on many different projects for Ludovico, including the preparation of floats and pageants for special occasions, designs for a dome for Milan Cathedral and a model for a huge equestrian monument to Francesco Sforza, Ludovico’s predecessor. Seventy tons of bronze were set aside for casting it. The monument remained unfinished for several years, which was not unusual for Leonardo. In 1492 the clay model of the horse was completed. It surpassed in size the only two large equestrian statues of the Renaissance, Donatello’s statue of Gattemelata in Padua and Verrocchio’s Bartolomeo Colleoni in Venice, and became known as the “Gran Cavallo”
Old
age
(1513–1519)
From September 1513 to 1516, Leonardo spent much of his time living in the Belvedere in the Vatican in Rome, where Raphael and Michelangelo were both active at the time. In October 1515, Francis I of France recaptured Milan. On December 19, Leonardo was present at the meeting of Francis I and Pope Leo X, which took place in Bologna. It was for Francis that Leonardo was commissioned to make a mechanical lion which could walk forward, then open its chest to reveal a cluster of lilies. In 1516, he entered François’ service, being given the use of the manor house Clos Lucé near the king’s residence at the royal Château d’Amboise. It was here that he spent the last three years of his life, accompanied by his friend and apprentice, Count Francesco Melzi, supported by a pension totalling 10,000 scudi. Clos Lucé in France, where Leonardo died in 1519 Leonardo died at Clos Lucé, on May 2, 1519. Francis I had become a close friend. Vasari records that the King held Leonardo’s head in his arms as he died, although this story, beloved by the French and portrayed in romantic paintings by Ingres, Ménageot and other French artists, as well as by Angelica Kauffmann, may be legend rather than fact. Vasari also tells us that in his last days, Leonardo sent for a priest to

make his confession and to receive the Holy Sacrament. In accordance to his will, sixty beggars followed his casket. He was buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert in Château d’Amboise. Melzi was the principal heir and executor, receiving as well as money, Leonardo’s paintings, tools, library and personal effects. Leonardo also remembered his other long-time pupil and companion, Salai and his servant Battista di Vilussis, who each received half of Leonardo’s vineyards, his brothers who received land, and his serving woman who received a black cloak “of good stuff” with a fur edge.[40] Some twenty years after Leonardo’s death, Francis was reported by the goldsmith and sculptor Benevenuto Cellini as saying: “There had never been another man born in the world who knew as much as Leonardo, not so much about painting, sculpture and architecture, as that he was a very great philosopher.”
of the
1500s
Among the works created by Leonardo in the 16th century is the small portrait known as the Mona Lisa or “la Gioconda”, the laughing one. In the present era it is arguably the most famous painting in the world. Its fame rests, in particular, on the elusive smile on the woman’s face, its mysterious quality brought about perhaps by the fact that the artist has subtly shadowed the corners of the mouth and eyes so that the exact nature of the smile cannot be determined. The shadowy quality for which the work is renowned came to be called “sfumato” or Leonardo’s smoke. Vasari, who is generally thought to have known the painting only by repute, said that “the smile was so pleasing that it seemed divine rather than human; and those who saw it were amazed to find that it was as alive as the original”. Other characteristics found in this work are the unadorned dress, in which the eyes and hands have no competition from other details, the dramatic landscape background in which the world seems to be in a state of flux, the subdued colouring and the extremely smooth nature of the painterly technique, employing oils, but laid on much like tempera and blended on the surface so that the brushstrokes are indistinguishable. Vasari expressed the opinion that the manner of painting would make even “the most confident master ... despair and lose heart.” The perfect state of preservation and the fact that there is no sign of repair or overpainting is extremely rare in a panel painting of this date. Swami Vivekananda Swami Vivekananda
Swami Vivekananda, Science Many great men have died early. Adi Sankara, who received Hinduism is an environment of rapidly spreading Buddhism died at 32. So did the great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, who has been called “a magical genius” by Thomas Kak on his centenary. Swami Vivekananda died at 38. These men have awe-inspiring achievements in their brief lives. Swami Vivekananda’s birthday, 12th January, was declared by the Government in 1984 as ‘National Youth Day’ so that Swamiji’s philosophy and the ideas he lived and worked so hard for could be a great source of inspiration to the Indian Youth. Young Narendranath, who later became Swami Vivekananda, though he lived more than a century back, is representative of modern Indian youth – doubtful and skeptic, unwilling, like any mordern rationalist, to accept anything, including any postulated religious truth without verification. Later he came into contact with the great Saint and Yogi Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who symbolized the traditional, spiritual, ascetic, Upanishadic India. This interaction, over a period of time, changed Narendranath into Swami Vivekananda, the modern expositor of Advaita Vedanta. The Scientist On November 23, 1898, Jamshedji N. Tata wrote to Swami Vivekananda asking him “to take the leadership of a Research 24

Institute for Science in Inda” – this later became the famous Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. They had travelled together in 1893 from Japan to USA. Tata was on a mission to bring the steel industry to India. Swami Vivekananda advised him that bringing materials technology alone was not good enough, Tata “will have to build materials science within the country.” – Farsighted suggestion! No professional scientist could have given better advice. That is why Tata wanted to bring in the ascetic spirit into science and he says in his invitation letter to Swami Vivekananda: “I know not who would make a more fitting general of such a campaign (to set up a Scientific Research Institute) than Vivekananda”! The Need for Character India needs today leaders – politicians, administrators, managers, industrialists, soldiers and scientists – with character – people who would not compromise with principles. Swami Vivekananda has said: “Beware of compromises. I do not mean that you are to get into antagonism with anybody, but you have to hold on to your own in weal or woe and never adjust them to others’ ‘fads’ through the greed of getting supporters.” The great scientist Einstein once said: “Most people think that it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong, it is the character.” This, of course, does not mean that anyone can do great
and
Religion
science. High intellect is necessary but not sufficient; character is more important. The definition of character is, however, not easy. Character means integrity; it means pursuit of excellence within the individual’s limitations, of course; it means perseverance in the face of adversity; it means commitment to national and social causes; and it means who a commitment to justice and social equity. Of course, character is needed not only in leaders but in every citizen. Character and Courage To be a person of character, in the face of temptations and pressures, needs courage. “Stand up, be brave, be strong” is a recurrent theme in Swami Vivekananda ‘speeches’ The need for strength applies to an individual as well as country. I have often said: “National Development without Security is vulnerable; Security without Development is meaningless. The greatest advantage of recognized strength is that you don’t have to use it. The greatest disadvantage of perceived weakness is that the enemy may get adventurist”. In fact, this is the basic of our credible minimum nuclear deterrence posture. Doing your Duty Bhagwadgita has influenced many leading scientists of the world like Einstein and Sommerfeld. When Robert Oppenheimer saw the flash from the first nuclear test in the U.S., he said he was reminded of a verse from the Bhagwadgita, where Krishna tells Arjuna that if
Swami Vivekananda Swami Vivekananda Swami you see my real form it will look brighter than a thousand suns, shining simultaneously. The most commonly quoted verse from the Bhagwadgita is the one that advises you to do your duty without worrying about the fruits of your achievements. But what is our duty? Swami Vivekananda gives practical advice: “By doing well the duty which is nearest to you, the duty which is in your hands now, we make ourselves stronger and improving upon our strength in this manner step by step, we may reach a state in which it shall be our privilege to do the most converted and honoured duties in life and society”. Eliminating Inequality Swami Vivekananda has said: “Desire, Ignorance and Inequality –that is the trinity of bondage” This is why total elimination of povery, particularly rural poverty, is so important. One of my definitions of a ‘developed’ India is “when the quality of life in rural India becomes comparable with the quality of life in the non-urban areas of already-developed countries”. There are many initiatives of the Government and of voluntary organizations in the context of rural development. One of them is RuTAGs (Rural Rechology Action Groups) of my office, where we try to raise the technology level, where a technology solution is already being implemented by a voluntary organization (or a Government Department). RuTAGs, which are now centred in six IITs, also help to deliver technology to rural areas, when it is available in an R&D institution. Some additional
technology development may also be necessary in some cases. For example, BARC has implemented successfully a programme for recharging of aquifers in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand using the isotope hydrology technique. One of the partners of the RuTAG Centre in IIT Madras is Vivekananda Kendra. Advaita Vedanta Swami Vivekananda gave a beautiful address in Harvard University in 1896 (March 25), which for the modern youth is a summary of great clarity of Hindu scriptures. He talks about “three groups of commentators, from whose interpretations have risen the three systems of philosophy and sects. One is the dualistic or Dvaita; a second is the qualified non-daulistic or Vishishtadvaita; and a third is the non-dualistic or Advvaita. Or these the dualistic and the qualified non-dualistic are include the largest number of Indian people. The non-dualistic are comparatively few in number.” Swami Vivekananda said: “All that is real in me is God; all that is real in God is I. The gulf between god and me is thus bridged”. He felt that Science had proved that “physical individuality was a delusion” and “by overcoming the small, selfish egoistical self, one attained infinite, universal individuality”, enshrined in Advaita Vedanta. It takes time to grasp the significance of this profound statement. The world is generally seen as divided into “I” – enveloped by family and the community loyalties and national patriotism – and “the statistics of the other six billion plus people”; it
is a sobering thought that this is the same perception of everyone of the six billion plus people. Unconsiciously, scientists come closets to the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta. The laws of science are universal. The validity of Maxwell’s equations of electromagnetism or of the Schrodinger’s equation in Quantum Mechanics or of the general theory of relativity is not limited by the confines of any geographical region. The distributed belief in their validity among scientists from all parts of the world gives rise, in fact, to a kind of Universal Consciousness. The fundamental concepts of the wave-particle duality in Quantum Mechanics and of the conversion of mass into energy and vice-versa in the Special Theory of Relativity, both introduced in the early part of the Twentieth century, had also deep philosophical implications. For many scientists, the stability of Nature’s laws (there is nothing in Science itself which gives us an assurance of this stability) – we expect the inverse square law of gravitation to be as valid tomorrow as it was yesterday and we expect the Schrodinger’s equation to be as valid next year as it was last year (of course, our understanding of these laws gets refined with time and we also make new discoveries) – and the manifestation of these laws in various natural phenomena (many of which are still not understood) is an expression of God. Beyond that, religious perceptions (or the absence of them) vary with the individual and the cultural environment he or she is brought up in. Swami Vivekananda tried to integrate these perceptions. And as stated by Swami Vivekananda Blossoms
25
a hundred years back, there is nothing in modern science – whether it is the theory of evolution or the theory of Relativity – which is in conflict with Advaita Vedantha. It is interesting to note that the interactions between atoms in inanimate beings, in far away galaxies and in our own being are governed by the same laws. Is this the basis of the concept of Parabrahmam? Swami Vivekananda has said: “The essence of Vedanta is that there is but one Being: that every soul is that Being in full, not a part of that Being”. Interestingly and somewhat humorously Swami Vivekananda says: “Astrology and all these mystical things are generally signs of a weak mind: therefore, as soon as they are becoming prominent in our minds, we should see a physician, take good food and rest”! In the final analysis Swami Vivekananda finds the difference between religions not significant. He says: “By the study of different religions, we find that in essence they are one” After listing to his lectures in the Parliament of Religions on 11 September, 1983, in Chicago, the New York Herald wrote: “Vivekananda is undoubtedly the greatest figure in the Parliament of Religions. After hearing him we fell how foolish it is to send missionaries to this learned nation”. India as a ‘Developed’ Nation We will become a ‘developed’ nation sooner or later. We will 26

become a ‘great’ nation again if we simultaneously retain our great cultural and spiritual heritage.
To move into the moving life...
My Young Friends:
Shaking of the slimy mud
India has a great cultural and spiritual message for the world, which Swami Vivekananda tried to deliver a century ago. We must keep doing this, but from a strong independent secular democratic ‘developed’ India
That clings to the roots of emotions,
India, to become a ‘developed’ country and to sustain that status must be not only economically developed, but also scientifically advanced and militarily strong. The challenge before you is how to develop India through the use of science and technology – create national wealth; improve the quality of life of our people, particularly those living in rural area; and enhance national security – and at the same time preserve our great spiritual and cultural heritage.
Scales drop off from the eyes
When the next Swami Vivekananda comes from such a future India – his message will spread through the world faster.

MAYA History & Development Maya was originally a nextgeneration animation product under development at Alias Research, Inc. based on code from a previous Alias product, Alias Sketch!, a 3D modeler and renderer for the Macintosh that lacked animation features. The code was ported to IRIX and animation features were added. The codename for this porting project was Maya. Walt Disney Feature Animation collaborated closely with Maya’s development during its production of Dinosaur. Disney requested that the User interface of the application be customizable so that a personalized workflow could be created. This was a particular influence in the open architecture of Maya, and partly responsible for it’s becoming so popular in the industry. After Silicon Graphics Inc. acquired both Alias and Wavefront Technologies, Inc., Wavefront’s next-generation technology (then under development) was merged into Maya. SGI’s acquisition w a s a response t o Microsoft Corporation acquiring Softimage, Co.. The new wholly-owned subsidiary was named “Alias|Wavefront”. In the early days of development, Maya started 28

with Tcl as the scripting language, in order to leverage its similarity to a Unix shell language. But after the merger with Wavefront Sophia, the scripting language in Wavefront’s Dynamation, was chosen as the basis of MEL (Maya embedded language). Maya 1.0 was released in February 1998. Alias was successful in expanding its market share, with leading visual effects companies such as Industrial Light and Magic and Tippett Studio switching from SoftImage to Maya. Following a series of acquisitions, Maya was bought by Autodesk in 2005.Under t h e name of the new p a r e n t company, Maya was renamed Autodesk Maya. H o w e v e r , t h e
name “Maya” continues to be the dominant name used for the product.
Overview Maya is an application used to generate 3D assets for use in film, television, game development and architecture. The software was initially released for the IRIX operating system, however this support was discontinued in August 2006 after the release of version 6.5. Maya was available in both “Complete” and “Unlimited” editions until August 2008, when it was turned into a single suite. Users define a virtual workspace (scene) to implement and edit media of a particular project. Scenes can be saved in a variety of formats, the default being .mb (Maya Binary). Maya exposes a node graph architecture. Scene elements are node-based, each node having its own attributes and customization. As a result, the visual representation of a scene is based entirely on a network of interconnecting nodes, depending on each other’s information. For the convenience of viewing these networks, there is a dependency and a directed acyclic graph. R.Saran Kumar, II B.Sc. Animation
