Riders may test their skills in the challenging Railyard Bike Park, navigate trails around the adjacent Lake Atalanta (along beginner, intermediate and expert courses), and easily connect to Pleasant Ridge trails, to the route to the new Downtown Rogers Farmers Market (close to area shops and restaurants) and to the Razorback Regional Greenway. Dog parks, a 2,000 foot boardwalk, and five fishing piers will soon be exciting, new amenities for Lake Atalanta as will launch areas for canoes, kayaks and boats propelled by trolling motors giving water lovers a peaceful retreat from land. For those more comfortable on foot rather than water or wheels, walking, running and hiking trails will provide expansive and beautiful opportunities to get out and enjoy Northwest Arkansas. of options to satisfy a hungry appetite whether it’s appetizers after work or decadent desserts when you need a treat. The Downtown Rogers Farmers Market is new since the last downtown update: the familiar hotdog cart, a variety of food trucks and a new indoor/outdoor market facility provide a destination for those who enjoy a Saturday morning outing that offers fresh food choices and locally grown and hand-crafted products. Early risers will want to grab breakfast and meet the new owners of Wesner’s Grill Monday through Saturday before heading over to farmers market. Downtown Rogers is more than just dining and specialty shopping. New businesses are engaging patrons with more interactive experiences. Original artwork in the form of steel sculptures are found in the pop-up parks. Once dreary alley ways are sporting strings of lights and once empty lots are being transformed into park-like settings. Additional murals and other art and ideas are being explored. competitive lease rates and less automobile traffic. While several spaces are currently being adapted for office and corporate use, additional opportunities are being customized for interested investors. Downtown residential offerings are also increasing in quantity and quality. Single family dwellings have always been plentiful and competitively priced downtown, and the recent market has been inspiring developers to seek more residential solutions. Developers and investors are eager to find available properties to renovate in order to accommodate the wants and needs of modern singles and families. Mixed use commercial/ residential has always been popular as seen in the apartments and lofts above downtown businesses and the newly renovated “Lofts at City Hall.” New mixed use and multi-family residences are not as plentiful when it comes to existing structures, but the move to build new units to increase density is in high demand and consistent with the goals of the master plan.

In this Northwest Arkansas city, Where Possible Lives…and flourishes, residents and visitors are enjoying a growing number of restaurants, specialty shops, professional services and entertainment options. “The Downtown Rogers Initiative is a tremendous community effort,” said Raymond Burns, President/CEO of the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce. “We’re transforming and revitalizing the Downtown Rogers experience.” New and unique downtown shopping experiences include: The Dotted Pig, Anna Grace Formals, The Imaginarium, The Urban Tub and Posh Alley Boutique, among others. Specialty gifts, antiques, wedding and prom dresses, funky art and beautiful home decorating accessories are definitely not the run-of-the-mill variety. Clothing options range from fun to fashionable to classic. Walters Shoes and Boots provides services to repair comfortable leather footwear that has seen better days. They also can repair your lucky ball glove or fit you with shoes, boots and sandals suitable for any season. Avenue Design Company and Magpie Bridge Apothecary Café will soon be adding their unique contributions to their Walnut St. neighbors. The brewery will join Levi’s Gastro Lounge and Brick Street Brews in bringing live music to downtown. The new Downtown Rogers experience continues to evolve with locally-owned shops inviting you to not only shop but to actually engage. The Honeycomb Kitchen Shop offers a range of interactive classes to make you more accomplished in the kitchen. Several other retailers are developing interactive experiences designed to engage, entertain and educate. The new Saturday Mornings on the Bricks event offers opportunities to learn about artists and craftsmen in the community as well as the artist within. There are many reasons to make Saturday mornings in Downtown Rogers a regular part of your weekly routine. Downtown is evolving and offers the perfect environment to live, work and play. It is attracting more interest from a variety of new developers, investors and businesses which will complement the professional services that have always found downtown to be attractive for business commerce. Downtown is coming together and the RogersLowell Area Chamber of Commerce is committed to facilitating the process. A new leadership position was created this year and Karen Wagaman was named Vice President for Downtown Development to provide the chamber and the downtown stakeholders with a dedicated professional who will focus on guiding the vision of the Downtown Rogers Initiative. “I discovered Rogers and was immediately taken with the quality and charm of the downtown infrastructure and vibrancy of the business community, said Wagaman. “Five minutes after I arrived, I knew Rogers was the city in Northwest Arkansas where I was going to live. I just needed to find a place to live and a job to support my passion for and attraction to this city!” Serendipity is how she describes her arrival on the scene because in just four days in April she accepted an offer on her home in Topeka, Kansas, purchased a home in Rogers and accepted the position with the chamber of commerce. “I am not sure if I am surrounded by luck or blessings or Karma, but I know I bring a positive attitude and high level of energy to work most days.” Whether you live in Rogers or just visit from time to time, discover how Downtown Rogers is becoming a place to explore and experience Where Possible Lives.

Career Connections Program Announced for 2016-17 School Year

T

he Rogers Public Schools Career and Technical Education (CTE) department continues to seek opportunities and programs designed to offer students academic and technical training that aligns with local workforce demands, projected employment projections and STEM related career fields. The department will implement a Career Connections Program during the 2016-2017 school year. The goal of the Career Connections Program is to provide relevant information relating to career/technical education to students, parents, educators, business/industry partners, and the community through a series of meetings throughout the school year. Topics presented at the Career Connections meeting will include CTE courses that are available to Rogers Public School students, current and projected employment data, training opportunities offered by local entities, industry certifications, and post-secondary education information. The CTE department strives to be cognizant of the local and regional workforce demands and to develop career and technical programs within the district that provide stu-

dents the opportunity to gain the academic and technical skills needed to pursue careers that align with projected employment. Information relating to local business and industry employment will be an integral part of each Career Connections meeting, as it will serve as a catalyst for introducing students to the local industry and career opportunities.

Collaborative Effort

The department is working collaboratively with the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce, the Northwest Arkansas Council, civic organizations, local business and industry partners, post-secondary institutions, and other agencies to plan and implement the Career Connections

meetings. The goal is to schedule the Career Connections meetings at local business, industry and community locations. The schedule for the Career Connections meetings will include both evening and weekend meetings to encourage student and parent participation. The department is also looking forward to working with business and industry partners to plan for each of the Career Connections Program meetings. Providing opportunities for students to visit local business/industries and to gain information about jobs will have a significant and positive impact on both the student’s career and the local and regional business/industries that are striving to meet workforce demands. Please contact Dawn Stewart, Director of Career and Technical Education, at (479) 6363910 or (479) 640-3703 to learn more about assisting with the Career Connections Program, including hosting a meeting at your business location, sponsoring refreshments, providing information about your business/industry, presenting at a meeting, or other ways that you can help make the Career Connections Program a success for all stakeholders.

Tom Hayes Named President of Tyson Foods; Donnie Smith to Continue as CEO

June | 2016 – Tyson Foods, Inc. announced in June that its board of directors has promoted Tom Hayes to the position of President. Formerly Chief Commercial Officer of Tyson Foods, Hayes will work directly with Donnie Smith, who will continue as the company’s Chief Executive Officer. Prior to his role as Chief Commercial Officer, Hayes was President of Food Service at Tyson Foods. Previously, Hayes served as Chief Supply Chain Officer for The Hillshire Brands Company, responsible for operations including procurement, manufacturing, food safety and quality, engineering, and logistics. In his new role, Hayes will lead Tyson Foods’ transition reflecting the company’s strategic focus on its hybrid model of branded prepared foods and

fresh meats. Hayes will be based in Springdale. Donnie Smith said, “Tom Hayes is an exceptional leader who’s played a key role in creating a united company and in our continued development of our branded products. He has a distinguished track record of strategic, operational and commercial accomplishments, and I am pleased to have an opportunity to work closely with him as we continue to leverage our scale and nine core brands to drive industry-leading growth in attractive market segments.” “Under Donnie Smith’s leadership, Tyson Foods has delivered excellent results for shareholders and experienced significant growth,” said John Tyson, chairman of the board of directors. “As we look toward the future of our business and its next phase of growth, succession planning is the board’s responsibility. We are focused on leaders with the right skills to help Tyson Foods capitalize on favorable market trends in the U.S. and abroad, continue improving our portfolio mix and margins, and drive innovation in our expanding range of branded products.” “I am honored to serve as President of Tyson Foods,” said Mr. Hayes. “I appreciate the confidence the board has placed in me and look forward to working closely with Donnie and the board to help our company become a global leader in protein-centric branded foods.”

AAA provides art focused programming where students master the creating and performing of the arts. Third, AAA believes in arts integration as an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. AAA has an in-depth partnership with Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Students engage in a creative process, connecting a museum art form and a curriculum-based subject which results into evolving objectives. Fourth, AAA takes the opportunity to develop partnerships with eight other local museums. Using Crystal Bridges as its flagship partner and extended classroom, AAA established learning connections to the diverse resources and experiences offered by collections housed in local historical, natural, and science museums or sites. Building student awareness through arts experiences and exposure to the museums is an integral part of the AAA mission.

Arkansas Arts Academy (AAA) in Rogers Receives Exemplary School Designation

June | 2016 – Guests came hungry and left full at the second annual Taste of Northwest Arkansas on June 23 at the Walmart AMP in Rogers. Two thousand attendees paid $30 each to sink their teeth into a variety of cuisine and beverages from 56 area food and drink establishments. The Taste of Northwest Arkansas is part of a two-night event, called BITE NW Arkansas, held during the annual Walmart Northwest Arkansas Championship LPGA golf tournament. The two-part event celebrates the region’s best cuisines, ingredients, restaurants and chefs. The NW Arkansas Beer and Burger Fest is the name of the second night’s event and hosted approximately 45 burger and drinking establishments at the Walmart AMP on June 24. Harry Hardy, tournament director, said the two-night event was rebranded this year to use the “BITE NW Arkansas” name as an umbrella that will allow organizers to add other food initiatives to the LPGA week in the future. “Traditionally with nationally recognized food festivals, there’s a huge amount of ancillary events happening all over the region where the food festival is taking place,” Hardy said. “So I think the food festival will continue to grow and shine a spotlight on the best restaurants that Northwest Arkansas has; and will continue to involve all the different downtowns and cities that make up Northwest Arkansas.” Hardy said this year’s event included eating establishments and vendors from Rogers, Bentonville, Springdale, Fayetteville and Siloam Springs and he hopes to include even more restaurants from more cities in coming years.

June | 2016 – Arkansas Arts Academy has been designated a 2016-2018 Exemplary School by Arts Schools Network, the nation’s largest professional membership organization of specialized arts schools. Created to highlight a school’s commitment to excellence, this designation is presented to an Arts Schools Network member school in recognition of its efforts to evaluate strategically its purpose, operations, and educational programs. This honor signifies that Arkansas Arts Academy has successfully completed a self-evaluation in the following areas: strengths, areas for improvement, consistency with school-wide or program purposes, aspirations, and future challenges. The mission of Arkansas Arts Academy (AAA) is to be the ultimate high school choice for excellence in arts and academics. The school bases its delivery on a foundation of four pillars. The first is academic excellence. AAA provides a rigorous innovative curriculum with personalized student learning environments that result in college and career ready students. Mastery of an art form is second.
