The New Gateway to Downtown Rogers

L

ake Atalanta is a special place for many and an important part of the historical fabric of Rogers. The reservoir, built from 1936-38 as a public works project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), is named for Atalanta Gregory, the wife of O.L. Gregory,

who donated most of the land that now forms the lake. For the first ten years of its existence, the area around Lake Atalanta was undeveloped and used primarily for fishing. In 1948 and 1949, a swimming pool, miniature golf course, roller skating rink, and restaurant were constructed. In the mid-1950s, Lake Atalanta became a water

source for the city with the construction of a water treatment plant. It’s a place where many memories have been made. On Saturday, October 29, after more than a year of renovations, the City of Rogers celebrated Lake Atalanta’s grand re-opening hosting over a thousand people from the community. With the lake being a staple in the community for generations, residents could hardly wait to get back in the park to see renovations and new amenities that the second oldest park in Rogers now offers. Enhancements include six fishing piers, a natural splash pad for kids, a tree house, 2,000-foot boardwalk and much more. Raymond Burns, President/CEO of the Chamber, emceed the grand re-opening and spoke during the ceremony’s welcome about the lake’s importance to the community, “As the water supply began to dwindle, we had to go to new sources. The park aged. It became time for a new vision for new generations. And today, we’re so happy to be able to see this beautifully renovated park. Nobody imagined it would turn out half as good as it did. A lot of people worked hard to restore its natural beauty to help it become our new community gathering place and our gateway to downtown.” Mayor Hines said in his closing remarks at the ceremony, “We’ve waited a long time for this day. We’ve doubled the land mass of Lake Atalanta, over 236 acres through land acquisitions. And because of the dollar for dollar match from the Walton Foundation that helped the city maximize public funds, this has become a reality today.”

Election Recap Jon Moran, Vice President of Government Affairs with the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce

H

ave you ever had the feeling that you’re ready for the party to be over so you can just go to bed and clean this place up in the morning? But there’s always those two people that just won’t leave. The 2016 General Election kind of felt like that for a lot of people. Now the party is over, and it’s time to air this place out and sort through the aftermath. Mayor Re-Elected Rogers Mayor Greg Hines easily won his re-election bid by receiving 67 percent of the vote. The Chamber has always had an excellent working relationship with the City of Rogers and Mayor Hines, who has been a valuable partner throughout his first term. At press time, Jerry Carmichael, who received 42 percent of the vote in the General Election was in a runoff election against Keith Jackson for Rogers Alderman, Ward 3, position 2. Linda Vannoy won the election for Lowell Alderman, Ward 3, Position 1, with 65 percent of the vote.

8 Chamber Voice | DECEMBER2016

Issue 3 Passes The most important item on the ballot for the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce this year was Issue 3. The chamber played a significant role in getting this measure placed on the ballot and then worked closely with the statewide campaign to pass it in Benton County, where it received 63 percent of the votes cast. If Rogers and Northwest Arkansas were to remain competitive in the global competition for economic development projects and attracting talent to 21st century jobs in our region, then passage of this measure was vitally important. Congressional Race Results Rogers’ residents, Senator John Boozman and Congressman Steve Womack, handily won their re-elections and will be returning to their respective chambers in Washington, D.C. with Republican majorities still intact. An anticipated loss of the Republican majority in the Senate did not occur in this election.

The New State Legislature The makeup of the state legislature has also changed. The State Senate will now be composed of 26 Republicans and nine Democrats. The Republicans picked up two seats this cycle, and one of those newly elected Senators is Lance Eads from Springdale, replacing retiring Senator Jon Woods. The Arkansas House of Representatives will now include 73 Republicans and 27 Democrats. This is a pickup of nine seats for the Republicans in the House Chamber. Austin McCollum is the newest member of the Benton County delegation to the Arkansas House, having defeated Representative Sue Scott in the March 1 primary. Arkansas General Assembly Convenes in January The 91st meeting of the Arkansas General Assembly will convene on Monday, January 9 and is expected to run through March or early April. If you are going to be in the Capitol during the session, have questions about specific legislation, or about the legislative process, please contact me at (479) 616-4484 or by email at Jon@RogersLowell.com.

AT&T Contributes $18,000 to Support Leadership Development for NWA’s Young Professionals

he Chamber announced in November that AT&T has made an $18,000 contribution to the Chamber’s leadership development programming for young professionals in Northwest Arkansas. The Chamber’s leadership programs help the community broaden its base of up-andcoming local leaders and enhance young professionals’ awareness of local issues while increasing their understanding of different perspectives. Programs also encourage citizen involvement in solving challenges the region faces in the future. Through education, community awareness and hands-on experience the Chamber’s leadership programming aims to provide the region with an ongoing source of diverse leaders at all levels of business expertise that are prepared and committed to serving as catalysts and sustainers of positive change for the quality of life in the region. Amy Gober,

Director of Community Development, said the impact from AT&T’s contribution will be tremendous by helping to expand and implement innovative programming to reach more young professionals in the region. “Employers continually tell us that attracting and retaining young professionals who are prepared to lead is critical to their future success,” she said. “We are committed to developing young leaders who have the character and commitment to ethically lead and serve our community.”
