INTRODUCTION from the President/CEO
Happy New Year! We’re entering the second year of our 3-Year Strategic Plan that’s themed Vision/NEXT. Think of it as our forward-thinking initiative that’s inspiring us to imagine the next 100 years and re-imagine the Chamber. Here’s why it’s important: • Relevance: This is ensuring we are relevant to the next generation of servant leaders who desire to serve business and community together. • Competence: It is also helping us to be competent in an era of rapid change, and to remain necessary because our mission-work is solving important business and community challenges. • Sustainable: And it’s moving us in the direction of being more sustainable with our long-term funding from our customers, members, and investors.
Vision/NEXT inspired innovation and change last year with our

new brand identity, a new emphasis on NextGen outreach and programming, and streamlined communications that tells our mission-work stories better in a brevity format. • Respecting your time: We understand busy, smart, professionals like you want information you can trust, delivered in an efficient and engaging way. We’ve raised the bar on what’s worthy of your time and challenged ourselves to share only what’s vital and worthy of your attention.
Why our mission work matters: Your investment in our mission work
impacts not only your business but the community’s quality of life as well. It sustains our success for the next 100 years by funding what we call the Mission 5 – key focus areas of our work: • Community Development prepares leaders, attracts talent, and ensures quality of life for our next generation by being the Keeper of the Community Vision – Vision 100. • Advocacy & Government Affairs represents the Voice of Business with our local, state, and national legislators and influences long-term prosperity for all. We’re your seat at the regional table. • Small Business & Entrepreneurial Development assists with starting, running, and growing business for our diverse small business community’s needs. • Economic Development attracts, retains, and expands business and industry, grows our tax base, creates jobs and career opportunities, and develops talent pipelines required for local world-class businesses. • Destination Marketing & Management increases tourism revenue for regional businesses, generates returns for tourism marketing investment, and champions our destination’s quality of life for both residents and visitors.
We hope you enjoy this issue of the Chamber Voice of Business magazine. Check out our cover story to learn more about the new format and our speaker for the 102nd Annual Celebration of Business & Community. I’m looking forward to seeing you there March 7. Tickets are now available online.

Chamber Promotes Ross Phillips to New COO Role Raymond Burns, President/CEO of the Rogers Lowell Chamber (RLC), announced in November that Ross Phillips, formerly the SVP of Community Development, has been promoted by the Executive Committee to the newly created Chief Operating Officer position effective January 1, 2024.
What they're saying: Burns said, “Our 3-Year Strategic Plan has now completed year one with much success in creating a strong foundation for the future.” Burns said this includes: • Rebranding and positioning the Chamber for the future to the next generation of leaders. • Remodeling the Chamber’s downtown facility. • Establishing a succession plan that will transition next generation leaders as inevitable retirements happen over the next 4+ years.
Zoom in: Ross joined the Chamber in 2017 and quickly made a difference by elevating the Northwest Arkansas Emerging Leaders (NWAEL) young professional’s group to a new level. Today, NWAEL is the largest group in the region with over 1,000 members. Under his leadership, both membership and engagement have grown, and the program is delivering more candidates for public and private boards, commissions, and leadership opportunities in the region. • Helping people be successful is what Phillips says he enjoys most about his work, “I’m passionate about helping people achieve their goals by developing their leadership skills through training, networking and community involvement opportunities.”
Recognition: In 2020, the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) awarded Phillips with its Forty Under 40 Award. In 2021, the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal named him to its Forty Under 40 class.
Career background: Phillips’ career began at nonprofit Mount Sequoyah in Fayetteville, Arkansas as Hospitality Director responsible for client acquisition and retention. One of his many accomplishments included implementing new policies and procedures to help the organization run more efficiently. He also planned and organized client events, managed billing and payment systems and the reservation database. • Phillips is from Fayetteville, Arkansas and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in public relations, advertising, and applied communication from the University of Central Arkansas in 2011.

Economic development: Local artists and merchants that participated in the Downtown Rogers creative economy enhanced quality of life, attracted new residents and investors, and stimulated the local economy. The very nature of being an entrepreneur and small business owner was creative, but more specifically, the creative economy consisted of economic activity that depended on individuals and organizations using their creativity to create jobs and revenue while enhancing community resources, and cultural engagement. • More than 50 DTR businesses went beyond selling goods and services and offered interactive experiences. • These experiences contributed to Downtown Rogers’ appeal as a destination location for nightlife and entertainment. • When you shopped local and supported local artists and businesses, you added to the vibrancy of our region.
Serving business and community together: Entrepreneurs engaged new customers through the addition of memory-making opportunities for patrons and added to the roster of reasons Downtown Rogers was a destination location for Instagram-worthy date nights, girls’ nights out, and family-friendly experiences. • In addition to the economic benefits, participating in the creative economy also generated non-monetary value that contributed significantly to offering socially and culturally significant experiences for the community.
