K2J Connect Event Brings Together Educators and Industry

T

he Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a K2J Connect event on April 23, with the purpose of bringing together area educators and industries to talk about workforce needs and development. K2J (Kindergarten-to-Job) Connect, presented by Walmart, took place at Preformed Line Products in Rogers and featured 18 educators from 10 different school districts across Northwest Arkansas. Attendees of the event included school district superintendents, guidance counselors, principals, and middle and high school teachers. The educators were given an overview of Preformed Line Products (PLP) operations in Rogers and asked questions about the types of career opportunities at PLP. An overview of the job market and skills assessment in Northwest Arkansas was then

presented which featured information on types of careers being offered, biggest skill gaps, and demographics of the current workforce in our area. The educators were then given a tour of the PLP plant and got the opportunity to see the firsthand how modern manufacturing works. Those on the tour were very impressed with what they saw and many came back noting that the reality of a modern factory was much better than what they thought it would be like. After the tour, other industries from across Rogers including FM Corp, Delta Systems and Automation, and Nabholz Construction Services, joined the group for a facilitated discussion about how to address the workforce issues facing our area. Many great ideas were brought forth, including getting industries more involved in the schools, allowing

tours or virtual tours of plants, and getting in front of parents to talk to them about career opportunities for their children. K2J Connect is a program of the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce.
