Advocating for the Small Business Community

T

he Small Business Council (SBC) is a committee of the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce. Established in 2005, the purpose of the SBC is to serve as an advocate for the small business community in and around Northwest Arkansas. Committee members are volunteers who work in and with small businesses within our community. These members take an active role in shaping Chamber programming designed for the benefit of the small business community. Educating, Onboarding and Recognizing Members SBC members are responsible for overseeing three key programs and are working towards adding additional programming in 2018 and beyond. The SBC plans business education courses where members teach members via Chamber University. Council members survey the small business

community then map out topics for the year that business owners have expressed an interest. SBC members also plan and host the bi-monthly Member Orientation program for Chamber members. This program allows new members to learn how to maximize their membership and existing members to get a refresher on all the Chamber offers. Each quarter the SBC selects a local small business to be recognized as an Outstanding Small Business of the Quarter, looking at business success and community giving as criteria to be selected. Members may nominate candidates at RogersLowell.com/small-business-of-thequarter by downloading the nomination form, completing it and returning to Steve Cox via email at steve@rogerslowell.com. Nominate a candidate now for the Outstanding Small Business of the 2nd Quarter before May 31. The announcement will be made at the end of June.

Business Partnerships Vital

for Career and Technical Education Programs

O

ver the past five years, the Rogers Public Schools Career & Technical Education (CTE) department has increased the number of partnerships with local businesses, industries, nonprofit and civic organizations. These business partnerships have proven to be a vital part of the continued improvement of the district’s career and technical programs and alignment with current and projected workforce demands within both Rogers and the surrounding Northwest Arkansas region. The CTE department is grateful for the businesses, industry and community partners participating in the Career & Technical Advisory Councils, classroom and school presentations, career conferences, facility tours, parent and student events, and career fairs as well as teachers participating in local business conferences and networking events sponsored by the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce. Modern Day Workplace Training | Teacher Internships The CTE department is thankful to GLAD/ Clorox Manufacturing and Multi-Craft Contractors who participated in the Modern Day Workplace Training and Teacher Internship program, which was a collaborative endeavor with the Arkansas Economic Development Council (ADEC) and the Arkansas Department of Career Education. The ADEC provided training related to Lean 101 and Six Sigma practices that introduced teachers to strategies used within the modern workplace designed to create an efficient work environment. Teachers completing the training explored options to complete a summer internship within a local business and/or industry to learn more about the modern workplace environments and job skills. Aligning Industry Certifications with Workforce Demands Partnerships with local business and industry will allow CTE programs to develop and offer educational and training programs that focus on the skill sets that align with each respective business/industry certification requirements and workforce demands. The Rogers Public Schools recognizes the importance of providing students opportunities to obtain industry certifications that align with both the career programs offered within the district and corresponding career fields. Industry certifications provide the students with credentials that indicate both the academic and technical skills that they have achieved and can

demonstrate within the workplace. The Rogers Public Schools CTE department is very interested in working collaboratively with local businesses and industries to identify additional industry certifications that could be incorporated within the CTE courses to help prepare students for successful careers with local employers. A short list of example certifications is at the end of this article. For a full list of industry certifications that are currently offered within each CTE program of study in the Rogers Public Schools, visit the Chamber’s Blog at ImpactPossible.com/Voice/. National Accolades for

Northwest Arkansas

April | 2018 – Happiest and Healthiest The Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers MSA (Northwest Arkansas) was named the 50th "Happiest and Healthiest" region by Time.com. The researchers, who surveyed more than 337,000 people across America over the phone in 2016 and 2017, found that enjoying your work and learning new and interesting things every day are strong predictors of overall well-being, which includes physical, social, financial and community health. Best Places to Live U.S. News & World Report named Northwest Arkansas one of the “Top 25 Best Places to Live” in the United States, coming in 5th on the annual ranking. To determine the Best Places to Live rankings, the publication looks at data on the country's 125 largest metro areas, including the cost of living, job market, crime rates, quality of education and more. Here’s what the publisher said: “The fast-growing metro area in Northwest Arkansas has long been a strong contender in the Best Places to Live ranking, and this year is no different. Low cost of living compared with household income, strong population growth due to net migration and high quality of life scores all contribute to its No. 5 ranking for 2018.”

Ozark Regional Transit to Receive Federal Grant April | 2018 – Ozark Regional Transit will receive a $3.6 million federal grant to replace several buses destroyed by a fire at their Springdale headquarters in January of 2017. ORT has since operated using a majority of borrowed, leased or donated buses. On April 5, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced ORT would receive funding to replace the buses. Joel Gardner, Executive Director for ORT, said he will accept bids to purchase the remaining buses to restore the fleet to the number they had prior to the fire. He expects the bids to come before the ORT board for a vote in June. ORT was one of 453 eligible projects requesting nearly $2 billion in funding from the FTA. “Every day, working families across America rely on buses, and these grants will ensure that these vital services continue to be both safe and efficient,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao said. For more information about ORT including their bus routes and contact information visit Ozark.org.

NWACC Wins National Award for Internal Fundraising Campaign NorthWest Arkansas Community College received a gold Paragon award for its internal fundraising campaign known as “iGive.” The award was presented March 18 at the annual conference of the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. The 2017 iGive fundraising campaign, which had a superhero theme, was executed in the fall of 2017 and raised a record $34,301. Faculty participation was 56 percent, and staff participation was 55 percent, up from 42 percent and 38 percent, respectively, in 2016. Karen O’Donohoe, planned giving officer for the NWACC Foundation, coordinated the drive and worked with a committee of volunteers to host activities at all NWACC locations. “We’re pleased to see the work and volunteer efforts of our faculty and staff recognized in this significant way,” O’Donohoe said. “The iGive campaign demonstrates to our stakeholders that our faculty, staff and students are willing to invest their time and money to support our community college. We appreciate their generosity immensely, and we know that through their donations, the college is able to provide more scholarships and support to significantly impact the lives of our students.”

Crystal Bridges Deputy Director Profiled in Alumni Magazine Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Deputy Director Sandra (Sandy) Keiser Edwards was recently featured in Western Illinois University's Western Alumni Magazine. She is also an ex-officio Chamber board member who contributes her expertise and leadership to the Rogers-Lowell community. Magazine Excerpt: After she spent nine years at the University of Arkansas, and oversaw a successful campaign raising more than $1 billion for academic programs, Sandy’s husband Clay passed away suddenly in January 2007. “Just when I was wondering what I was going to do, the Walton Family Foundation, with whom we had worked at the University of Arkansas, had recently announced the development of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and inquired about my interest,” Edwards recalled. “I was in a new phase in my life, and it took a while to determine what might be the best next move. I continue to be grateful that this remarkable opportunity presented itself at just the right time.” View the full article at wiu.edu/ alumni/Western_ News.php.

Celebrating National Travel & Tourism Week | MAY 6-12

N

Did you know? ational Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) is an annual tradition for the U.S. travel community. It’s a time when travel and tourism professionals across the country unite to celebrate the value travel holds for our economy, businesses and personal well-being. The theme of this year’s celebration, which will take place May 6 – 12, 2018, is “Travel Then and Now”, and marks the 35th anniversary of the 1983 congressional resolution that established NTTW. The week is all about celebrating the contributions and accomplishments of the U.S. travel community over the course of the last several decades. Impact on Tourism in Arkansas Tourism is one of Arkansas's largest industries. In 2017, the state hosted more than 29.4 million visitors and brought in $7.87 billion in tourism expenditures. National Travel and Tourism Week provides the perfect opportunity for us to express our appreciation to the Arkansas travelers who have made this growth possible! Tourism Spending Economic Boost to Rogers Tourism is also big business in Rogers, creating economic impact across a wide spectrum of industries, from lodging and retail to transportation, recreation and restaurant food & beverage. According to tourism research firm Longwoods International, 3.5 million personal trips were taken to Rogers in 2016, generating $201.8 million in spending. Tourism supports over 3,600 jobs in Benton County, and generates over $34.2 million dollars in state and local taxes. These successful outcomes of tourism are why Visit Rogers and its partners celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week. Tourism invites everyone to discover why Rogers is “where possible lives”, bringing economic vitality to our community and celebrating The Good Life in Northwest Arkansas.
