Your Guide to the 2022 General Election

Election Day is just around the corner with early voting starting on October 24 for the General Election on November 8. The last day to register to vote is October 11. There’s a lot to be voted on, from candidates in local and state races to several ballot issues. In this issue, we help you breakdown the issues, introduce the candidates, and answer some of your questions about the looming election.

Information on the General Election Information on the General Election

Lucky 13: We currently have a total of thirteen State Senate and House races throughout Benton County, with only five of them being contested. Due to redistricting that occurred in 2021, Northwest Arkansas has received one additional State Senate seat, three additional State House seats, and changes of district numbers. Aside from state candidates, we have five issues we will be seeing on the ballot, four pertain to the state as a whole and one is specific to Benton County.

Term Limits, Comebacks, and New Representation: There are several House and Senate races underway across Northwest Arkansas.

• State Representative Joshua Bryant is the candidate for Senate District 32 and Representative-Elect Brit McKenzie is the same for State House District 7’s seat, both uncontested.

• State Senator Bart Hester, District 33, will be back and representing slightly more of both Rogers and Lowell.

• State Representative Austin McCollum will be back for House District 8.

• State Representative Kendon Underwood will also be back and represent slightly more of Lowell.

Still in the State Race Towards the Election: Rogers and Lowell have two seats that are still in the midst of campaigning.

• Current State Representative John Carr (R), has had District 94 shifted to District 15, and received a challenger for the seat – Rachel Cox (D) is seeking to unseat the Representative.

• Another seat shift for the area can be found in House District 11 (formerly District 89) which shifted from a majority Springdale seat to now having parts of Lowell.

• The seat vacated by Former State Representative Megan Godfrey is between two individuals, Rebecca Burkes (R) and Rey Hernandez (D).

• Rey is a Marine Corp Veteran, and former Justice of the Peace for Benton County.

• Rebecca is married to former State Representative Aaron Burkes and founded The Burkes Company.

Who is Seeking Office in Benton County: Early voting for the 2022

General Election will end on November 7. Benton County has a large list of candidates who are running for Justice of the Peace, the school board, NorthWest Arkansas Community College, and other city positions. If you are unable to vote at a poll on election day you can request an absentee ballot by October 27, but it must be received back to the polls by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.

Ballot Issues: We have four state ballot issues and one local ballot issue that will be on the ballot. The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Research & Extension has put out a breakdown of the statelevel ballot issues here.

King Burrito Named Small Business of the Third Quarter

The Small Business Council of the Chamber provides special recognition to members of the local small business community by presenting four quarterly recognition awards and one yearly recognition award. Quarterly award winners are considered automatic nominees for the yearly award presented at the Chamber’s Annual Celebration of Business & Community.

Business and Community Partnerships: An Essential part of Career & Technical Education

Rogers Public Schools Career & Technical Education (CTE) has increased the number of partnerships with local businesses, industries, nonprofit and civic organizations significantly over the past several years. These business partnerships have proven to be a vital part of the continued improvement of the district’s CTE and Extended Learning Programs and have been instrumental in aligning CTE programs with current and projected workforce demands.

Valuable Learning Experiences: Mercy

Health and Northwest Medical hospitals and medical facilities, JB Hunt, Tyson and several retail and hospitality companies have hosted student interns. Several companies have also provided opportunities for Rogers Public School teachers to participate in Summer Externships.

Partnerships Develop Educational Training Programs:

The business, industry and community partnerships will be an important part

of student events offered this year, including career conferences, facility tours, career fairs and business sponsored student events.

Why It Matters: The continued collaboration helps prepare students for a broad spectrum of jobs within local companies. Industry certifications recognized by local companies often convey a standardized level of knowledge, aptitude, skill performance and career readiness skills that potential employees, including RPS graduates, will contribute to the job they are applying for and the overall workplace environment.

The Rogers Public Schools CTE Department invites local companies, community organizations, colleges and technical training centers to participate in career and extended learning events to explore additional partnership endeavors that will focus on certification, job skill training programs and apprenticeships. Arvest First Leadership Kicks Off 2022-23 Class

Arvest First Leadership (AFL), a program of the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce, kicked off its newest class in September.

Activating Tomorrow’s Leaders: AFL invests in the future of our community by providing an innovative, student-focused program promoting personal growth and leadership development opportunities. This free program introduces students to leadership skills and competencies, builds self-esteem, explores career paths, and develops interpersonal skills.

Get Involved: High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors residing in Rogers are eligible to apply, and should meet the following requirements: a minimum 2.5 GPA; demonstrated leadership potential; commitment to maintaining passing grades in all courses during participation in the program; and the ability to attend all sessions. Other desired qualities include a passion for community involvement, the ability to work well with peers, and a positive influence on peers.

Chamber, Regional Organizations Celebrate Welcoming Week NWA

Northwest Arkansans joined together in September to showcase the region’s diverse cultures, activate collection drives for local nonprofits and strengthen connections within communities during Welcoming Week NWA, an annual series of familyfriendly events. Rogers Mayor Greg Hines signed an official proclamation to support the program.

Why it’s important: The program’s overarching message is that people of all backgrounds belong in NWA and enrich the region both economically and socially. The week is a great example of the Chamber’s Vision for our area to be the center of world-class business, welcoming communities, and opportunities for all.

What we did: The Chamber partnered with the Rogers Public Library to create a “Welcome to NWA” video in Spanish to help newcomers learn valuable information about everyday life in NWA. Our Community Development division also welcomed families to Rogers at the September 10 Rogers Local Food Market.

Yo + Aqui (I + Here): This was our Downtown Rogers Art on the Bricks theme. It featured NWA newcomers sharing their stories and helped them make new connections.

The Welcome Mat: Our Go Downtown Rogers program hosted The Welcome Mat on September 17. This event wrapped up Welcoming Week NWA with a community party. It brought together NWA newcomers with the community in the spirit of working together for a better quality of life for all.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Welcoming Week also coincided with the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 - October 15 every year. Beginning in 1968, #HispanicHeritageMonth is celebrated nationwide through festivals, art shows, conferences, community gatherings, and much more. The Chamber joined Walmart among other organizations celebrating the month and the independence days of several Latin American countries including Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

Rogers Rotary Club Serves Community for Over a Century

Service Above Self: The Rogers Rotary Club has served as a driving force for economic development in Rogers and Northwest Arkansas. Founded on April 1, 1917 on the concept of community service, Rotary is comprised of business leaders, educators, religious leaders, lawmakers, nonprofit executives and other civic-minded citizens who are interested in making a difference in the community. Members exemplify the motto, ‘Service Above Self.’

Paving the Way: Rotary members working in businesses throughout our community played a role in getting the brick streets paved in 1924 and took leadership roles within the community. Rotary continues to serve in significant ways, providing businesses and nonprofits with the opportunity to connect and collaborate with one another while serving and learning about community.

Community Focus: Rotary presents community awards to deserving individuals each year such as the Dick Daniel Distinguished Citizen Award, which recognizes and honors individuals who strive toward the highest level of community involvement, influence, and dedication of time and energies toward making our community a better place to live. They also provide dictionaries to Rogers Public Schools, provide wheelchairs to the National Wheelchair Mission and donate books to the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter.

Making Events Happen: Rotarians sponsor many downtown events such as Frisco Inferno, the official BBQ Competition of Bikes Blues and BBQ, and are co-sponsors of Rogers Oktoberfest Beer Festival. Rotarians also host a monthly lake and trail clean up at Lake Atalanta. When an opportunity to serve becomes available, Rotarians take the lead.

Bikes, Blues and BBQ is the world’s largest charity motorcycle rally that benefits women, children and the under-served members of the Northwest Arkansas community. Over the course of its 20 years, the “Rally with a Purpose” has raised over $3 million for local charities.

The Road to Recovery: Tourism is the 2nd largest industry in Arkansas, generating an $8 billion impact in spending to the state in 2021. Pre-pandemic, visitors spent over $240 million in Rogers, and large events create major economic impacts for our communities and hospitality businesses navigating recovery from the pandemic.

New Home Base: Based in Rogers this year from October 5-8, the BBBBQ rally creates opportunities for the entire community. Tax revenues generated by travel and tourism create economic and community development opportunities for local businesses, and help fund local

government improvements in public safety, parks and recreation, and infrastructure like roads and bridges.

Numbers Don’t Lie: Rally studies show 40 percent of attendees come from within 25 miles of Downtown Rogers, which means they are our neighbors and prospective customers. 90 percent of rally goers are high-income earners with disposable income, adding up to major spending by of out-of-town guests in our restaurants, shops, hotels and more.

Why it Matters: Northwest Arkansas is fortunate to host major events like the recent Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, Northwest Arkansas Fall Arts & Craft Fairs Weekend, home Razorback sporting events, and Bikes, Blues & BBQ. They create major economic opportunities for the community, provide careers for our families, neighbors and friends, and support the high quality of life we all enjoy.

In 1996, a group of Human Resource Managers from industries in Northwest Arkansas collectively asked, “How do you raise the skill level of our workforce?”

Filling Workforce Needs: Business and Industry Training is a nonprofit organization that offers hands-on education and training based out of Springdale and Gentry in various industry careers to meet the needs of the growing workforce in Northwest Arkansas. They exist to fill the skills gap between our workforce and the businesses that require a specific set of training.

Familiar Names: A few of their partners include Nabholz, McKee Foods, Glad Manufacturing, Kawneer, Rockline Industries, Tyson Foods, and many other companies that are vital to the fabric of northwest Arkansas.

Learn Smarter: BIT lets students learn at their own pace and choose when they want to train, rather than a semester format. Their systems training equipment multimedia curriculum provides live computer feedback and constructive assessments in real time as students utilize short term, hands-on training on equipment such as electrical systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, mechanical drives and robotics.

Now You Know: The school also teaches students how to operate systems such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), an industrial computer control system that continuously monitors the state of input devices and makes custom decisions to control the state of output devices. One example of this system would be the automatic sliding entry doors that are common in grocery stores and open or close when people walk in or out.

Community Involvement: BIT is grateful to receive grants that allow them to continuously upgrade equipment to meet the needs of industry partners. They recently received a $145K grant from Benton County that will fund training scholarships for skilled labor opportunities. A grant from Arconic Foundation will go towards the purchase of a new process control trainer, which will enable students to learn vital skills regarding monitoring a process to maintain quality output. McKee Foods supports around $43K for trainers for the Gentry location and Glad has donated several pieces of equipment.

“Our organization is here for industry companies, individuals that may not have any industry experience and want to learn a new trade, or for individuals that have experience but want to further their learning,” said Julie McAllaster, BIT Director.

The NWA Community Showcase coming October 15 to Frisco Station Mall creates an entrepreneurial platform for businesses to connect with other businesses and consumers in the community by showcasing their products and services. This new venue highlights the importance of all sorts of businesses and entrepreneurs in the region.

The NWA Community Showcase will feature food prepared by local chefs and will give attendees an opportunity to vote for their favorite dish while sampling some of the best cuisine the area has to offer.

Government affairs & advocacy: Sarah Lynn Geiger started in September as the Chamber’s VP of Government Affairs. Her work is specific to cultivating relationships among elected officials, community leaders, and businesses to ensure we can continue building and supporting strong business growth in the area.

Sunshine State Experience: Sara Lynn previously worked as a head legislative aide for the Chairman for the Ways & Means Committee and the Chairwoman for the Education Committee in the Florida House of Representatives. During her time in the Florida House of Representatives, her duties entailed managing the members’ legislative agendas, tracking bills of interest, and navigating the varying interest within both policy areas.

Volunteerism, Travel & Food: Sara Lynn enjoys spending time with her husband, Drax, and their dog, Maggie. She also loves volunteering for varying causes and being outside. She considers herself a foodie and loves to experience new things through travel and food.

EYE FOR DESIGN: Skylar Rutherford started as part of the Chamber’s Marketing Communications division in September as a Marketing Communications Manager - Design Specialist. Her work includes designing for print, digital and social media within the Chamber’s many platforms, properties and departments.

Before the Chamber: Skylar previously worked as an Art Director for Advantage Solutions Sales & Marketing, where she specialized in the retail customer experience and worked closely with a team of artists to create custom design work for a variety of clients.

Outside of Work: Skylar enjoys promoting #girlpower, fishing, painting, indoor cycling, yoga, playing golf, reading, John Mayer, bright colors and FRIENDS.

Notes 50-year Anniversary of “Each One, Teach One”

Humble Beginnings: The Beaver Lake Literacy

Council initially distributed reading and tutoring materials in 1972 to any interested Arkansans out of the trunk of a car in a parking lot in Rogers, and charged students for the materials.

Making a Difference: Today, the council only teaches adults to read, write and understand English. Fifty years, community merging, a name change and a nonprofit status later, the Literacy Council of Benton County currently occupies space off the Bentonville Square and consists of nearly 70 active students, 48 active tutors, a current waiting list of 60 students with 250-300 students served year to year.

“When the council started, all our students were American adults whom for whatever reason, were not reading well or at all,” LCBC Director Vicki Ronald notes. “Almost all of our students are now English as Second Language students.”

Board minutes first mention the need for Spanishspeaking tutors in January 1985.

Welcoming New Residents: “Today, 65 percent of our students are Hispanic,” Ronald notes, “however, we have 12 Afghan refugees attending classes with group and individual tutors. We have Russian students, Indian students, Brazilian students…our council is still filling a need for these residents to learn English and contribute to our community.”

Each One, Teach One: Early council curriculum included the Laubach reading method, its motto being “Each One, Teach One.” This motto can still be found today written on the council’s building. The initial mission statement of the council included the tutoring of non-reading or slow-reading adults and school-age children using the Laubach reading method.

Ozark regional transit Service rises in popularity

Springdale-based transit provider Ozark Regional

Transit (ORT) has seen interest for its on-demand service triple since launching earlier this year on the Via platform.

Riding High: Ride requests have risen from about 500 per week in late February to 1,500 in the summer. Via provides the technology platform for the ORT service that’s offered in Bentonville, Fayetteville and Rogers.

Community Funding: The Walton Family Foundation provided ORT with a $985,608 grant for multiple initiatives, including establishing the on-demand service and extending the zero-fare service through 2022.
