T
he 2016-2017 school year is going to be another great year for Career and Technical Education (CTE) in the Rogers Public Schools. Plans are underway for an extensive renovation project to the career center facilities, new and expanded career programs, even more opportunities for students to participate in career and work-related experiences, and opportunities for the district CTE department faculty to establish new partnerships with local business and industry. The Rogers Public Schools offers opportunities for all students to participate in career and technical education courses. A recent educational research study entitled, Career and Technical Education in High School: Does It Improve Student Outcomes? substantiates the importance of offering quality career and technical programs. The research study was conducted by the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, and was based on Arkansas career and technical education related data. The study includes compelling data and information about the critical role that CTE courses play in preparing students for both college and careers following high school graduation, as well as the significant impact on future wage earnings for students who participated in career and technical education programs in high school. On August 11, Dr. Jake Walker, who was instrumental in compiling the data used in the Fordham Institute study, presented the research study findings to the Rogers Public Schools CTE teachers and district administration. The research study and data will help facilitate the discussions focusing on continued development and refinement of the district’s CTE programs to insure that students are afforded equitable access to career and technical programs that will prepare them for successful careers following high school graduation. Contact Steve Cox, Senior Vice President of Economic Development at (479) 636-1240 or Steve@RogersLowell.com if you would like information on how to access a copy of the study.

New Event Celebrated Teachers Making a Difference
A
crowd of nearly 1,000 Rogers Public School administrators and teachers gathered in Rogers Wednesday, August 10 at the first-ever Thank-A-Teacher Celebration Presented by Sam’s Furniture. The inaugural event was held at Rogers High School and honored teachers who are making a big difference not only in our local community but also the state. Members of the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce donated nearly 50 prizes totaling over $18,000 to both say thank you and reward Rogers teachers for their commitment to education and the community. Two special prizes were also given to
recipients nominated by administrators and chosen by the prizes’ donors. These were a $10,000 Home Makeover given to Christa Ricks by Sam’s Furniture, and a 1-Year Lease on a 2016 Buick Encore given to Rhonda Leichliter by Everett Buick GMC. Joe Donaldson, representing Sam’s Furniture, the Presenting Sponsor of Thank-A-Teacher Celebration, said, “Though we can never thank our teachers enough, this event is all about letting them know how we appreciate all that they do for us and our children.” Other event sponsors included Platinum Sponsor Everett Buick GMC, and Silver Sponsors First Security Bank and MedExpress Urgent Care.
Raymond Burns, President/CEO of the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce stressed the importance of the event designed to thank teachers saying, “Teachers give our children so much: a boost of confidence when needed; extra help when they are having trouble learning; and a welcoming presence in the classroom. Our teachers also use their classrooms as the first steps in educating the next generation of workforce that will keep our businesses and our community thriving well into the future.” Platinum Sponsor |
