Kia ora Koutou, This term has seen students from across our school participate in a great number of curricular and extra-curricular activities, through which they have demonstrated outstanding levels of engagement, creativity and resilience. We thoroughly enjoyed our Year 13 camp, Athletics Day, Swimming Sports, Education Outside the Classrooms Trips and our Investiture Assembly; almost as much as the students did! All of which were so successful because of our wonderful students and dedicated staff. Thank you for a great term.

I know students and staff will be welcoming a break at last. It feels like it has been one very long term from late January to now. I hope you are able to spend some time with your young person over the break and we look forward to welcoming them back for the start of Term 2 on Monday 2 May 2022.

___________________________________________________________________________ LOST PROPERTY We have a number of items in lost property. Please check at reception. Items will be re-sold or given to charity if not collected by the first week of Term 2.

___________________________________________________________________________ BUS PASSES Due to increased transport costs that have occurred over the past months, unfortunately we are having to increase the travel costs for our Charter bus. We will continue to attempt to keep these increases to a minimum. Thank you.

The cost of a Term pass for the Charter Bus will increase to $210 from Term 2.

The cost of a 10 ride pass will increase to $40.

We will no longer be issuing single ride passes All students must have a valid pass by Friday 6 May 2022. Thank you.

NEWS FROM OUR TEACHERS ___________________________________________________________________________ FROM OUR MĀORI DEPARTMENT The Maori Department are proud to announce that Tamihana Gardiner, ex Pupil, ex Head Boy of Rotorua Lakes High School will take up a position of Teacher Maori next term. He will start on Monday 2nd of May with a powhiri at 9.30 am at the Whare.

___________________________________________________________________________ NEW TEACHERS We welcome two new English Teachers, Ms Angela Gunn and Ms Kay Hughes who will join us at the beginning of Term 2. Ms Gunn joins us as a full time permanent teacher and Ms Hughes is with us until the end of the year covering maternity leave. From all of us at Lakes High School – Welcome😊

___________________________________________________________________________ ACCELERANDO PROGRAMME 2022 The Accelerando Programme is a year-long vocal performance programme for young singers Yr 9-13. The students will take part in the one week programme these Easter holidays and then again in the July holidays for another week. They will receive world class singing tuition-individual and master classes, lessons in stagecraft and performance, and there will be opportunities to perform in concerts and enter competitions to showcase their work throughout the year. We are very lucky to have the following students attending this programme from Rotorua Lakes High School:

___________________________________________________________________________ SHOWQUEST This year Rotorua Lakes High School is entering the Smokefree Showquest. We have an amazing crew of students who are developing the storyline, choreographing the dances, a student director, dancers, actors and a team of students who are in charge of video, sound, lighting, hair, makeup and costumes. We are really looking forward to the performance. This year there are a few changes due to the pandemic and one of the main ones is that there will not be a live evening show. This is a little disappointing but we still travel to Tauranga on the 29th June and perform in the Trustpower Arena where our school performance will be recorded so it can be streamed digitally. Thank you to all the amazing students who

have worked so hard this term. Cant wait to get rehearsals started term 2! ___________________________________________________________________________ YR 11 HISTORY TRIP TO WAIOURU Last week 27 year 11 students travelled to the Waiouru Army museum as part of their History course. At the museum they were able to spend their time gathering evidence for their first major assessment of the year. We were lucky to have the support of the well organised museum staff as well as the experience of former History teacher Mr Old. Thanks also to Lauren Thompson who sang 'In Flanders Field' absolutely beautifully in front of the Roimata Pounamu and the wall of poppies in the memorial entrance of the museum.

___________________________________________________________________________ GREAT DAY OUT FOR OUR YR 13 TOURISM STUDENTS It was the Yr13 Tourism students turn to get out and about to experience our amazing local Tourism industry today. Great information on the recovery after COVID and all the job opportunities available in the coming months.

Plus some squeals, laughs and fun with a great bunch of students! Thanks to Te Puia, Skyline and Velocity Valley.

STUDENT SUCCESSES ___________________________________________________________________________ NORTH KING COUNTRY MX SCHOOLS EVENT Last weekend, Delton Manson, Fletcher Saunders and Ticayla Manson represented Rotorua Lakes High at the North King Country MX Schools Event.

450 riders attended, one of the biggest school motocross events there has been to date. For a school to be eligible for the overall results there has to be a minimum of 3 riders with the 3 top riders results collated for overall positions. After a great day of riding, we took away 2nd place which was a fabulous achievement due to the large number of riders. Our individual results were 3rd, 6th & 4th in their respective classes.

What an achievement! Congratulations and very well done.

PRE-SEASON HOCKEY TOURNAMENT Last weekend was exceptional for our Girls 1st XI and our Boys XI hockey teams at the pre-season hockey tournament. Our teams played exceptionally well and were up against some outstanding talented teams from Auckland. They held their own and did us proud. Girls 1st XI had a good tournament. They came together nicely as a team playing together for the first time. It was great getting in some pre-season games and plenty to look forward to moving forward into Hockey season next term.

Congratulations to the girls for a great effort this tournament. Big thank you to Stephanie for coaching and the great parent support at the games.

We are also excited and lucky to share with you that Boss Edmonds has agreed to coach our Boys XI team. A huge thank you to Mrs Pani McLean and Mr Justin Timoti for organising a really incredible hockey coach who is not only an ex-student but also the current coach of New Zealand Maori and has coached the NZ Junior Maori team. This is phenomenal for our school and team.

It’s fantastic that we have such accomplished and high level coaching for our students.

___________________________________________________________________________ OUR TALENTED STUDENTS’ SHOWCASE The year 11's and one year 9 student performed a showcase to share the work they have been doing in dance this term. A huge congratulations to Brock Aitchison, Tiraha Karakia, Meliz

Kaya, Aliyah Norfolk, Mia Vandy, Taylah Wharerau and Hazel Herries. It was a fantastic show!

___________________________________________________________________________ SHAKESPEARE IN SCHOOLS COMPETITION Well done to Sara O'Driscoll, Scott Heron and Kim Geraets Skerrett who participated in the Shakespeare in Schools competition on Saturday. This talented group performed an excerpt from the play Macbeth, and are pictured left with their hard working teacher Miss Burt. Outstanding effort by

SPORT ___________________________________________________________________________ SWIMMING On Saturday 2nd April two Lakes High students took part in the NZ Secondary Schools Open water Champs at Mount Maunganui. Samuel Trass Yr 12 and Hannah Kiernan Yr 10 swam in the 1.25km open water swim around Leisure Island. Hannah competing in the Female 14-15 yr placed 4th and Samuel in the Male 16-19 yr was 9th.

Great results in a highly competitive field for both these students. Very well done.

___________________________________________________________________________ WATERPOLO Friday night was the season finale of the Rotorua Intermediate and Secondary schools water polo competition.

Lakes High has two teams in the competition; Senior mixed and junior mixed. Both teams have played well all season despite the hiccups created by COVID. In the finale the junior team was down 2 players, but still managed a great battle in the pool losing narrowly to WHHS. The senior team was pitted against JPC Senior Boys who are ranked very highly. Although this team also lost, the score was very close with our players managing to score 9 goals. Huge thanks to our player coaches and joint captains of the senior team Madyson-Manaia Martin and

Samuel Trass. These two have done an amazing job as players and coaches of not only our school teams but also the Mokoia Intermediate team. Very well done.

CAREERS & GATEWAY

HAERE MAI 2022 Kia ora, talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Malo ni, Mauri, Kia orana, Noa'ia, Bula vinaka, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Fakatalofa atu, It's almost time for Keystone Trust to open for Study Award applications! We are so excited to be able to make available up to 10 Study Awards for school leavers from around the motu who meet our eligibilty criteria and will be entering their first year of tertiary study in 2023. We will also be offering the inaugural Keystone Trust and Pink Beluga Property Scholarship for a school leaver studying a Bachelor of Property degree at the University of Auckland. This scholarship will be for three years and also includes paid work experience for the student as they learn on the job about property development, management and finance. Keystone Trust Study Awards are the 6

premier industry scholarships offered to students taking up studies for a career in the property and construction sector and we will be inviting applications from 1 June 2022 to 12 August 2022.

A Study Award includes: •

a scholarship of $5,000 per annum for up to three years for tertiary study/ textbooks/course costs/accommodation • industry mentoring and networking opportunities • a study buddy • introductions to our industry sponsors Currently we have 52 scholarship recipients on our programme, both school leavers and existing tertiary students. Our demographic breakdown is 13.5% Maori, 13.5% Pasifika, 13.5% Asian, 9% Middle Eastern/Indian/DRC, 50% Pakeha/European, studying around the motu.

Whanau Awhina Plunket online Babysitting Course Plunket Education in Schools’ Babysitting Course is available for teenagers all over Aotearoa. This course is designed to give high school students the knowledge and skills to babysit children of all ages. It's written for first time babysitters; students don't need to have previous experience to enrol.

The course ideal for students aged 14 and above and takes around 2-3 hours to complete.

Students work through nine sequential modules and on completion of the course and the final quiz will receive a certificate certified by Whanau Awhina Plunket to show employers that they have completed this course and are 7

ready to babysit. As well as the certificate the students are sent a Babysitter's Manual that supports all the information they have learned in the course.

During the course the following topics are covered: • the role of the babysitter, including the expectations of the families you are working for • ages and stages of children from birth to school age, their basic needs and their care • professional behaviour including your presentation • how to engage with children of different ages, including activities for each age group and behavioural information • safety, including emergency situations, keeping yourself and the children safe, and basic first aid • how to get a babysitting job.
