Dear Parents/Caregivers

FROM THE PRINCIPAL _______________________________________________________________________________

RLHS STUDENT EMMA JACKSON FIRST PLACE at the ROTARY CLUB SECONDARY SPEECH CONTEST A few words from Emma: In 54 years of competition, Lakes High has only won it 4 times, and our last winner was in 2001, so seeing my name on a badge next to some exceptional students is very surreal. The feedback I received from the judges, people I knew and complete strangers was utterly mind blowing. To think I only had two weeks to prepare, and was still changing my speech the night before is crazy. For me personally it is a massive honour, not only winning, but also the feedback I received. Massive thank you to Ms Walker who supported me through the entire process, including telling me I was crazy when I Emma with her parents Emma with, Mrs Richardson (left) informed her I decided the night before not to use cue & Ms Walker (right) cards. The help she gave me was priceless. Ms Richardson too for her support on the night. And always, thank you to my parents who watched me panic continuously in the days leading up to it, but always had the confidence that I would pull it together (I certainly didn't have that confidence). So many amazing things have happened this year and words can't really describe how extremely honoured and blown away I am by this all.

Congratulations Emma we are very proud of you.

YR 12 & 13 TOURISM FIELD TRIP The 12 and 13 Tourism classes went on their Term Three field trip last week to Te Puia, Kawarau Jet, 3D TrickArt Gallery and Redwoods Treewalk. Students were able to hear from operators about the history of the area, the development of their businesses and what it's like to work in the tourism industry. Interestingly two of our guides were ex-RLHS students! A fun day had by all.

END OF LOCAL NETBALL SEASON The Rotorua Netball season has come to an end and RLHS has had a very successful season. We had 5 teams this year and they have all shown good improvement in their game and have had some great successes. The Senior Development Team finished their season as Runners Up in their grade. The Junior A Team were winners in the Collegiate A Banner Round and Joint Winners of the Collegiate A Championship Round. The Junior Blue Team were Winners in the Championship round in their grade. Our Junior Gold team were 3rd in the Collegiate B grade, and our Senior A team were 4th in the Senior Secondary A grade.

Well done to all the girls this season. Also a big thank you to our coaches and managers this season, along with the support of our fantastic whanau and friends.

GIRLS HOCKEY TEAM Girls Hockey played in the freezing cold rain on Tuesday night in Rotorua. The 2nd X1 had an impressive game against JPC and came away with a Win. 1-0. Great work girls and Lauren Crowe was the Player of the Day. The 1st X1 team played JPC and had a brilliant game but lost. Well done girls, it was cold but you hung in there with a 3-2 loss. We are proud of all of you.

BOYS SOCCER The final game for Rotorua Lakes High School 1st XI Boys Football dawned bright and sunny. But by the time game time rolled around at the Rotorua Boys high pitch the wind was whipping up a storm. 12 of our boys took to the field and after a bit of a slow start and some missed opportunities Jamie Trass scored the first goal. This made him hungry for more and he scored the 2nd goal as well. Boys High challenged back with a goal of their own and we went into half time with the score 2 - 1. Thankfully after a rev up at half time from the coach the boys came out fighting and Josh Morley scored 2 more goals leaving the final score 4 -1.

We end the season in 4th place and want to take this opportunity to thank our coach Johnny Chemis, Manager Miss Beijeman, Supporters and Taxi's Ms Chemis and Leslie Eggleston, Ref's Luigi Gea and John Meredith and all the other parents who have supported the team over the past year. _______________________________________________________________________________________

BOYS HOCKEY Our season came to an abrupt end on Wednesday when the draw came out and we have no more games! Not wanting to finish the season like that, we scrambled together a game against A Grade team WHHS. The boys were apprehensive to be playing a higher level team but after an unsettled 5 mins settled into the game. Nil all at half time gave the boys confidence that this wasn't going to be a walk over! Second half our boys came out firing. The opposition scored first but soon after we equalised (goal by Jamalullah Abdul Rahman) and then again with a superb hit from a PC by Orrin Lewis. Unfortunately in the last few minutes WHHS scored again to bring the final score to 2-2. We were pleased with a draw but knew again we could have had a win! The season is now over and it was a great way to end. We could see in that last game that all the work and expertise coach Owen Mitai-Wells had put into the team had developed them into a strong unit. The boys are incredibly grateful to him for putting his hand up as a volunteer. Farewell to Captain Josh Donald - thanks for your contribution to Lakes hockey. Roll on next year!
