Kia ora Koutou, We are now well into the busyness of Term 3 with subject selection evening having been run on Wednesday evening this week and our Roadshow, where we take the school out to our contributing schools starting in Mokoia this Thursday. The subject selection was well attended and we hope this was beneficial to help students and parents make informed choices. Our students going to the Roadshow at Mokoia offered a professional presentation of our school and allowed the Year 8’s at Mokoia to get an insight into how our High School operates. This insight will be further developed on Tuesday 4 August when we have our school open day. We are welcoming students from all of our feeder schools to participate in a day of activities with our staff and Year 9 students. Following on from this we have our Open Night on Thursday evening from 4 – 6 pm which allows parents and Year 8 students to look around the whole school, ask questions of staff and students, and become familiar with everything Lakes has to offer. This is one of the highlights of our year and I look forward to seeing many of our community there. It has been a good week for sports at Lakes, with both our Boys Hockey and Girls netball teams performing very well in competition. I am always impressed with the diverse range of sports that our students can engage in at the school. I appreciate how much our parents support our school environment and the positive things that happen here. As a school, the best marketing we can ask for is your feedback and conversation around the experience your child has had at Lakes. I wish you all a relaxing weekend. Nga mihi,

Jon Ward Principal / Tumuaki 1

Patrick presents an interactive and entertaining seminar called Passing Exams, of which the feedback is always very positive. This year, we are offering it to our students as an online package. Passing Exams On-line Learning Programme. The programme is priced at $19. Patrick has prepared the seminar content into ten video units, each with a PDF document download. By accessing this content whenever they want, your student will receive the latest research-based strategies to help them prepare for their exams. Patrick has developed a 5-step “how to study” approach and within these steps, he presents solutions to common challenges they may experience in the lead-up to exams. Amongst the ten units are strategies for: • how to improve motivation, • reduce distractions, • improve memory • and reduce exam nerves. ___________________________________________________________________________ KICKSTART BREAKFAST KickStart Breakfast, is a community partnership initiative with Fonterra, the Government and Sanitarium where they provide free kai for schools across Aotearoa. Lakes have been accepted as a participating school starting in Term 3. We were recently offered the opportunity to receive free bread with support from the Whakaora Trust, and because of this we have started up a daily. Breakfast Club offering toast and a hot drink each morning in the Auditorium. Now that we have the availability of the KickStart Breakfast for Term 3 we will be able to offer a more substantial breakfast. Lakes provides the hot drink and the spreads but the other products are all kindly donated. The Auditorium is a great place to run this from as it has a kitchen, with a dishwasher and there are tables and plenty of chairs available as well as storage space.

We are looking for volunteers who could help with serving a breakfast of weetbix, toast and a hot drink to students. Please contact Liandra Allen 3456124 ext 221 ___________________________________________________________________________ MATHS HOMEWORK CENTRE

Pacific Student Leaders Programme Update Year 12 and 13 students - we are taking registrations of interest

for our Pacific Student Leaders Programme courses to the Cook Islands and Fiji. While current travel restrictions are still in place, we're looking forward to resuming our courses with our Pacific Island neighbours as soon as the Government announces that travel can resume safely between us. In the meantime, we're planning ahead as much as we can, to ensure that when flights open up again we're ready to jump on them and provide this fabulous opportunity for our student leaders once again! With only 30 spaces available on each of our courses, we want students to be able to apply to us now to secure their place. If you have keen students, please ask them to register their interest or apply to us as soon as possible! This will ensure that they don't miss out, and also help us with our planning while we wait on further news about travel. Provided that current travel restrictions are lifted, our planned course dates for the remainder of 2020 are: Cook Islands Fiji

4-11 October, 2020 (Rarotonga, in the Term 3 break) 15-22 December, 2020 (Suva, at the end of Term 4)

Fees for all our courses are $3,000 GST inclusive. International flights and all food, accommodation and course materials are covered in the cost. STUDENTS - APPLY NOW or REGISTER YOUR INTEREST HERE
