SLALOM KAYAKING IN EUROPE by GEORGE SNOOK, YR 9 A few weeks ago I was very fortunate to travel to Europe to compete and train in canoe slalom kayaking. Europe gave me the opportunity to train on much higher standard slalom courses, and to compare myself to other athletes in my age group (under 14’s). Whist there, I had the chance to go to Prague, in the Czech Republic where there is a great training site, and also to Augsburg, Germany where I had the European Canoeing Association (ECA) junior cup race. At the first ECA race in Augsburg, I was placed seventh which disappointed me a little bit. The second day I was a bit nervous considering the run the day before but I managed to pull off a time that would have placed me 3rd going into the finals. However, the judges gave me a 50 second penalty on a gate that they said I missed. After the race in Germany, I spent one week in London with my sister which was awesome and then flew home. It was a brilliant first experience racing in Europe, I learned a lot and looking forward to next time! I would like to thank Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust and RLHS for their help, support and encouragement.

MATHS WEEK – MATHEMATICS WARRIOR WARS! Next week is our week to celebrate the learning of Mathematics. The theme for Maths Week is Mathematics – Warrior Wars and it highlights contributions to Mathematics from Africa. Did you know that computers are all based around binary code (based on powers of 2), and that African traders from as far back as we have records, used (and use) this system for multiplication! This system evolved into computers being engineered. Maths Week will involve:

MANCALA – THROUGHOUT AFRICA Mancala is believed to be the oldest game in the world. It was played in as many countries on the continent as there are variations of it. So if you don’t recognise the name, it’s probably because its been called everything from kigogo in Kenya to oware in Ghana. The name Mancala literally means “to transfer” in Arabic, so the aim is to move your stones around so that you can capture more than your opponent. It’s fun, but strategic, much like chess. The game is still played today, enjoyed by both children and adults across the globe.
If you have a minute you may like to try beating the computer at MANCALA http://www.mathplayground.com/mancala.html The rules are also at this site!

SPORTS AT RLHS From our Coaches & Managers ____________________________________________________________________________________________
LADIES 1ST XI HOCKEY Positively balmy weather, compared to last week, for our game against JPC 3 at the Rotorua Turfs. Lakes stunned the opposition with a goal in the first minute with Ruby Ryan finding the back board. Riley Lambert was back to add a second after 4 minutes and the RLHS attacks just kept coming with a number of near misses. Clearly RLHS were convinced this was going to be a doddle, when an innocuous looking series of moves began by JPC deep in their own half, gained momentum in midfield after some missed tackles and then ran around our defence to get a goal back in the 13th
minute; I don’t know who was more stunned: the RLHS defence or the JPC attack! Buoyed by getting back to within a goal, JPC set to with renewed vigour and the game took on a more balanced tempo with both sides having opportunities in the D but no one managing to score. Half time: 2 - 1 to RLHS. The body language of the RLHS team huddle at half time indicated that Mr Smithells was far from happy with some of our teams’ performance and they came out after the break with a much sharper approach to our passing and tackling. This was rewarded in the 33rd minute when Ella Fookes scored a brilliant goal after an inspirational run and weave from the half way line. The pressure became more intense on the JPC goal and Sharkayla Dean got a fourth after 40 minutes; she added the fifth 6 minutes later. The last 10 minutes was all Lakes attacks but when the umpire finally blew for full time it was still 5 - 1 to Lakes. Much to work on before next week despite the convincing nature of the win. Player of the Day: Rebekah Edworthy.
