PINK SHIRT DAY Pink Shirt Day is Friday 26 May 2017.
Wear pink for only $2.00. There will be prizes for the best dressed and cupcakes on sale for $1.50. The coordinators this year are Alex Neff, and Cullen Dittmer, Year 12 students and we thank them for their dedication and hard work in organising this event.
________________________________________________________________________________ GENERAL ACTIVITY DONATION Each year the school seeks from parents a $50 donation per student, (this amount is included in the school fees account). This donation can be claimed as a charitable donation through Inland Revenue. At Rotorua Lakes High School we spend the donation on first aid supplies, school nurses, and student diaries, and to support co-curricular activities. It is unfortunate that we need to seek charitable support from parents / whanau for so-called ‘free education’ but government grants to schools do not cover a lot of extras.
Thank you very much to the parents and whanau who pay this voluntary donation.

STAGE CHALLENGE 5 weeks to go until Stage Challenge and rehearsals are in full swing! The date for the competition is Tuesday 13th June. Students need to have paid in full by 30th May. Tickets for the show are not available through school, this is a decision of the competition, they will be sold via Ticketek. Apologies at this stage we have no information on cost. We have a rehearsal on Monday 6th June from 9am to 4pm. If your student cannot make this please email Katherine Beijeman, Year 10 Dean at beijemank@rotorualakes.school.nz Below is the rehearsal schedule for the next 2 weeks. We have added 2 after school rehearsals during the week for the full cast. I understand some students will have prior commitments but if they can attend that will help us cut down the number of rehearsals closer to the event. If your child cannot attend please email me as soon as possible at the above address. STAGE CHALLENGE REHEARSAL SCHEDULE WEEK 2

READER / WRITER SUPPORT Some students at RLHS need support with reading and writing during assessments so they can effectively communicate what they know. We need volunteers with good literacy skills to support these students by reading and/or writing for them in assessments both in class tests and in examinations. An added Ministry of Education requirement is that volunteers undergo Police vetting, for which the school submits the paperwork. If you think you can help please contact Anne Perrott at 3456124 Extension 250 or email perrotta@rotorualakes.school.nz ________________________________________________________________________________ MATHS HOMEWORK CENTRE

RLHS 1st XI SOCCER The soccer season began this week with the newly formed Rotorua Lakes High School 1st XI taking on the Rotorua Boys High School development team. Our boys took to the field wearing their new uniforms with pride. The game was well matched in the first half and considering our team was named the night before and this was their first game together they played well. Matt Gatenby (our new goalkeeper) was challenged in the goal and by half time he had only let one goal slip through. With us at a 1-1 draw, Daniel Burrows then landed a nice goal but we still had a fight on our hands. Shortly into the second half Boys High scored another goal making it a draw and putting the pressure on. Didi Lawson one of our new Year 9's scored a beautiful goal pulling us into the lead again. CoCaptain Brad Francis then decided to get in on the action and kicked a whopper into the net. Thankfully we held them off for the rest of the game with a final score of 4 - 2. Player of the day went to Didi Lawson. Thanks to all our supporters who made their way down.

HAMISH DODD – RACE REPORT – T42 It’s hard not to smile with race scenery like this! The T42 went down in Tongariro National Park on Saturday and I’m stoked to have taken the win! As usual, the race starts with a bit of a blat on the sealed roads, where I led the pack out towards the beginning of the good offroad stuff. Once we got onto the farm tracks I swapped positions with the pointy end of the field back and forth, eventually managing to maintain the lead into the start of the traditional 42nd Traverse. The beginning of the old forest road was in pretty good nick leading to some high speed racing, not much resistance from the smooth dirt and fine gravel surfaces. After half an hour or so of trying to keep 2nd place on their toes, something went wrong with the body and I ended up having breakfast a second time, all over my bike. From here I knew that cramp towards the end of race was going to be pretty likely, as I’d lost most of my fuel, so I had to be very conservative wherever possible. The first downhill of the T42 is always a ripper, 15 minutes at least of sketchy, rutted and worn tracks and stream crossings, until I reached the bottom with 2nd place still hot on my tail. I knew the first big climb was going to be crucial, so I dug deep and forged a gap which I then maintained for the rest of the race. The track got rougher and hardier towards the middle, and I had to keep telling myself to keep going, as the moment I eased off the pressure I could be right back in the thick of the bunch again. In just under 2 hours I was rounding the last corner of the bush and into the final farm stretch, knowing that the finish would soon be in sight. I was cramping pretty badly as predicted by this point, but I knew that only a few more minutes were needed to get to the line. Finally, 48km and 1h58min51sec later, I crossed the finish line happy, exhausted, and in 1st. _________________________________________________________________________________
2nd ROUND NATIONAL CUP FOR SPORT CLIMBING On May 6th and 7th the Rotorua Climbing Club hosted the second round of the National Cup for Sport Climbing. Lakes High had 6 students competing. Tom was 1st in Lead Climbing and 1st in Bouldering (Under 18). Luke was 1st in Lead Climbing and 3rd in Bouldering (Under 16). Other results: Holly Gardner was 5th in Lead Climbing (Under 16), Sam Munday 3rd in Bouldering and 5th in Lead Climbing (Under 20), Josh Halliday, 4th in Lead Climbing (Under 20). Holly and Sam will also represent New Zealand at the Oceania Championships in Noumea later in the year. _________________________________________________________________________________
GIRLS 1ST XI HOCKEY Week two of grading rounds saw the Girls 1st XI Hockey team go up against Western Heights High School. Our team played a fast game and worked together well to come out with a 5 nil win. Player of the day went to Ella Fookes for her hard work in getting the ball up to scoring position. We look forward to a game against Rotorua Girls High School next Tuesday at 7pm, supporters welcome. _________________________________________________________________________________
