Purpose Summary The programme will be Marae and water-based, and will run for 5 days from 28th September to 2 October, 2020 (inclusive). It will be facilitated jointly between Rotorua Community Youth Centre Trust, Te Waiariki Purea Trust, Tatau Pounamu, using the Pūtake Nui collaborative approach to implement and evaluate this project. It is widely accepted that whanaungatanga and belonging, cultural connectedness and reconnection, and strength of cultural identity are core to the health and mental wellbeing of Māori and reducing the impact of depression and/or anxiety, improving social inclusion, and addressing mental health inequalities. Hence the programme is firmly set in the context of Te Ao Māori, Te Ara Tauwhirotanga and Wai Puna. Whānau will be actively engaged including being part of the graduation ceremony lunch. This project has been named Tiakanga Tu which means normalising practice of Tiakitanga. This name has been gifted by Paraone Pirika (Ngāti Tuteniu). The programme will commence with a pōwhiri on Owhata Marae at Hinemoa point and will be underpinned by the story of Hinemoa, who was a woman who was seen as the essence of life and guardian of our children. Hinemoa used her knowledge of water environments and water safety to make the crossing to Mokoia Island. The participants will follow that journey and will have the opportunity to learn about, and paddle to, the island on a waka, undertake a guided tour on the island and learn about the history and conservation and return. Throughout the week the young people will build their resilience and confidence on a variety of bodies of water including lakes, rivers and the ocean. The programme will intertwine Te Ao Māori; building resilience, confidence and mental wellbeing; with water safety skills. *Please note : Programme activities are subject to change due to weather conditions.
