Choosing a Major at FIU By Hazel Hooker, Associate Director, Office of First-Year Programs
Welcome to Florida International University! Did you know we offer almost 70 undergraduate degree programs? As you can imagine, choosing an appropriate major can be a challenging and nervewracking experience for students. Luckily, students can choose “Exploratory” as a major while undergoing the decision-making process.

Most freshmen, including those who declared a major, experience uncertainty or “undecidedness.” That is why it is extremely important for students to be proactive and take the necessary steps to select a major or confirm the chosen one as early as possible. To help with selecting a major we encourage students to utilize the resources listed below that are available at Florida International University.
Academic Advising Center Academic advisors in this area are specifically trained to work with students who are exploring majors. Florida International University

Learn to interpret MyMajorMatch results. This assessment is available when logging into my.fiu.edu, under the academics tab.

Learn about the workshops and major-related professional panels offered every semester. Workshop topics include, but are not limited to choosing a major, networking, time and stress management, library research strategies, linking courses with career skills, and careers in the health field.

Career Services Career counselors equip students with the tools to develop and manage their careers within a global workforce. Students will: •

Five Ways to Help Your Student

By taking Discover Your Major (SLS 1402 – freshmen only) or Major and Career Exploration (SLS 3407 – minimum sophomore standing required) students will:

Panther Camp is a great way for incoming students to meet other new students before they start their FIU college experience. This year we will have four sessions for your student to choose from:

Where is Panther Camp? Panther Camp takes place at Lake Placid Camp and Conference Center in Lake Placid, FL. Their air-conditioned facilities provide the perfect location for our program.
Panther Camp participants hold leadership positions in the university’s largest organizations, councils, and leadership societies.

The cost for Panther Camp 2015 is $80.00 and includes: •
Transportation – a coach bus brings students to and from camp.
•
Lodging – all bunk-style sleeping quarters are air conditioned, carpeted, and having running water.
•
Meals – three meals a day are served buffet style and are all-youcan-eat.
•
T-shirts and gifts – leave camp with exclusive FIU gear.
•
A four-year Student Alumni Membership for freshmen participants and a two-year membership for transfer participants when you register for camp.
•
Additionally, there is an annual Panther Camp reunion that is free to campers.

Acronym for the Biscayne Bay Campus — often called the North Campus — and located at 3000 N.E. 151st Street North Miami, Florida 33181.
Bright Futures
Florida state scholarships given to Florida residents who qualify for the award.
FIU at I-75
One of the four FIU campuses located in Broward.
The Cage
The nickname for the football stadium.
Campus Life
Campus Life houses much of the information about how students can get involved in a variety of extracurricular activities and organizations, designed to enhance a student’s college experience. Campus Life provides a wide array of services and features of interest, including Academics, Athletics, Entertainment, Student Services, and Clubs and Organizations.

CLEP
Acronym for the College-Level Examination Program® — provides students of any age with the opportunity to demonstrate college-level achievement through a program of exams in undergraduate college courses. Students may choose to take exams in a variety of subjects through CLEP that would satisfy academic requirements in a number of classes. There are 2,900 colleges, including FIU, that grant credit and/or advanced standing for CLEP exams. More information is available through the Center for Academic Success.

Freshmen Convocation is the traditional official welcoming ceremony of freshmen to the University Community by the President, Provost, and faculty and staff. It is designed as an opportunity to convey to students the significance of their educational endeavor and the commitment of the university to support them in the achievement of this goal — within the classroom and without! It is also a celebration of university life and the traditions of Florida International University. Florida International University
GA
Acronym for Graduate Assistant — is a graduate student at FIU who is working part-time as a professional staff member in a variety of campus offices as a part of their academic program.
GC
Acronym for The Graham Center — the hub of student life and activity, located at the Modesto Maidique Campus.
Golden Panther Pledge of Honor
The FIU athletics fan code of conduct, created by the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution to encourage and promote good sportsmanship by student-athletes, coaches and spectators.
Grade Point Average (GPA)
A grading system used to determine a student’s status, based on the grades the students receive in individual courses and calculated with the number of college credits for each individual course. Each letter grade a student can receive is given a preset number of quality points, which are multiplied by the number of credits in each individual course. All of these points are added together and divided by the number of total credits a student has accumulated during a student’s academic progress throughout their time of study, giving them their Cumulative (overall) GPA.
GreenRide
Florida International University’s web-based carpool program, designed to link students, faculty, and staff members with others who might be interested in carpooling to and from campus. FIU’s GreenRide Carpool Program is a part of FIU’s Go Green initiatives. It also benefits members of the FIU community by providing close proximity parking for carpoolers. In order to use this privileged parking, a GreenRide decal must be obtained and properly displayed. ISSS
Acronym for International Student and Scholar Services. The office is located in GC 355, they assist international students with their needs such as insurance, financial aid, etc.
Kissing Bridge
The bridge by the turtle lakes at MMC. It is said that when couples kiss on the bridge, they will stay together forever.
MANGO
Acronym for Management and New Growth Opportunities Building. College of Business and FIU Online departments are housed in this building. Features three restaurants and several classrooms.
MMC
Modesto Maidique Campus — often called the South Campus — is the main campus of FIU, located at 11200 S.W. 8th Street Miami, Florida 33199.
MyFIU
Also called PantherSoft, students use this website to register for classes, access their financial aid, request transcripts, apply for graduation, etc., found at: my.fiu.edu

The Pit
The Pit area by the food court in the Graham Center at the MMC campus where activities, events, and campus traditions are often held.

The guide distributed at Orientation to students, parents, and guests providing great information about the university.
RA
Acronym for Resident Assistant — a student who has had special training and lives on a residence hall floor to assist students with anything they may need while also planning events and educational activities for the students on the floor.
Roary
FIU’s official mascot, a Golden Panther.
The Seal
Official FIU landmark — it is rumored that if students walk across the seal, they will not make it to graduation!
Semester GPA
A student’s Grade Point Average of the current semester.
SGA
Acronym for Student Government Association — the governing body of the student body at Florida International University.
SLS
Common term for SLS 1501: the First-Year Experience — a one-credit First Year Experience course required for incoming freshmen. This course serves as an extension to Orientation. “SLS 1501 introduces students to the university and promotes and supports academic, intellectual, personal, and social growth and success.”
Spring Semester
The term of classes beginning in January and continuing through April.
Summer A Semester
A shortened version of the Summer C Semester, taking place during the first six weeks of the summer term.
Summer B Semester
A shortened version of the Summer C Semester, taking place during the last six weeks of the summer term.
Summer C Semester
The entire summer term of classes beginning in May and continuing through August.

TA
Acronym for Teacher’s Assistant — a student who assists a faculty member with classroom responsibilities.
Trail of the Torch
The annual FIU tradition where students gather at the FIU football stadium and walk together to the center of campus to light the Torch of Knowledge, Service and Understanding.
Transfer Student
A student transferring from another university or college to FIU to continue their studies.
UCC
Acronym for University Core Curriculum. The UCC encompasses FIU’s general education program. The UCC provides the broad, well-defined curriculum that helps graduates to think, organize, and make decisions.
Week of Welcome
The first week of the fall and spring semesters where events and activities are planned to help connect students to the university community.
WUC

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Can we speak to my student’s academic advisor? Advisors are happy to meet with you and your student together via appointment. Your student can make appointments with their Academic Advisor through their Student Dashboard.
Where does my student turn in immunization documents? Students who need to submit their immunization documentation should visit studenthealth.fiu.edu. Once there click on the ‘FORMS’ tab on the top of the Student Health Services page. Next, click on the ‘Immunization Forms’ link. Lastly, click on the ‘Immunization Documentation Form’ link, which will open up the document that MUST be filled out by a healthcare provider. How can I get access to my student’s my.fiu.edu account? In order to get access to your students account, you have two options. First, you can directly ask your student for the login information. If they provide you with the information, you can access the student’s account. The other option, which is the most effective, is to fill out the FERPA form which allows parents/guardians to look into their students accounts on their behalf. This form must be filled out annually. To access the FERPA form, visit onestop.fiu.edu. Under Quick Links, click the “Form” tab and you will be directed to Important Forms page. The FERPA form is located under the Registration tab.
Where do I find out if my student has been awarded financial aid? On the student’s my.fiu.edu account, on the left hand side of the Finances section there is a link that reads “View Financial Aid.” Your student can click on that link and from there they select the school year for which financial aid has been awarded to them.
Where does my student pay their tuition fee? Tuition can be paid via credit card or electronic check through the my.fiu.edu account under the Finances section where it states to “Make a Payment,” or the student may go to the Student Financials office, located in Primera Casa at MMC and Academic Center 1 at BBC to pay in cash, check, or money order.
How does my student register their vehicle? 24–48 hours after they have registered for classes, your student may visit parking.fiu.edu and on the homepage they can click on the “order parking decal” arrow. From there they should follow the steps to complete their order.

Is there public transportation? How can my student get around if they don’t have a car? The website www.get2fiu.com has extensive resources to connect students to carpools, Miami-Dade transit options, and even how to get an emergency ride home if needed.
What are the housing policies on drugs and alcohol? Depending on the age of the students the alcohol regulations vary. If the student is under 21, they are not allowed to consume or possess any alcohol anywhere on campus including their respective rooms. If they are found in possession or intoxicated, they will face disciplinary actions from the office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution, and risk the consequence of being removed from housing. If they are over 21, they are allowed to have alcohol only in their respective rooms and not in the common areas. Any student found with drugs or any sort of illegal substance will face disciplinary actions from both the university and Miami-Dade police.
How safe is the campus? FIU is located within a major metropolitan area. As such, we have the potential to experience many of the same crime issues of any major city. The FIUPD employs a Community Oriented Policing approach to problem solving and works diligently to prevent and investigate criminal activity, providing for a safe flow of vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and finding solutions to the issues that affect our students, our faculty, and our staff. FIUPD provides crime prevention and safety information via their Campus Security and Fire Safety Report, presentations by their officers, Campus Safety Walks, and interactions with the FIU community. A copy of FIU’s Campus Security and Fire Safety Report can be obtained on their website or at their station. The campus is in partnership with the Police of Sweetwater. They are always on high alert for on-campus crimes or offenses both within the residences halls and around the campus. The FIU police offer a wide range of services and have a fully functional detention area for any situation. They help to ensure the safety of our students as well as faculty and staff. They provide updates on crucial situations that may arise on campus via text alerts and notifications that are sent to all students and staff. What options does my student have if housing is full? If housing is full, your student can explore the option of finding off-campus housing by creating an account and looking through listings on classifieds.fiu.edu.
