Letter from President Hodge Welcome to Miami University! One of the most exciting times on campus is when we welcome the newest members of the Miami family to your home for the next few years. The excitement, energy, and dreams that you bring invigorate and encourage us all. You are probably experiencing a wide range of emotions — exhilaration at the thought of being on your own and the independence that brings, and perhaps a little bit of apprehension at the same time. I want you to know that everyone who works at Miami — your professors, residence hall staff, student services staff, everyone — has one overarching goal: your success. You are here because you possess the unique qualities that Miami students are known for — intellect, character, curiosity, and the drive to achieve. At Miami you will be actively engaged in the learning process, both inside and outside the classroom. This year you have the special opportunity to engage in campus-wide activities around the theme of enhancing creativity and innovation. Your curiosity will lead you to explore things you never thought possible. We encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone and seize opportunities whenever they appear. These experiences will enable you to continue to develop those qualities that will lead to extraordinary success when you leave. Miami students work hard academically, and they are fully engaged in cocurricular activities. From our athletic events to performing arts events and lectures, from any of 450 student-led organizations to endless intramural sports opportunities, I have no doubt that you’ll be busy. I hope that you enjoy learning about our history, especially our long held traditions, and that you have fun creating some of your own! I look forward to meeting you soon and often.

Savor this moment. Take a minute to reflect on who you are, right now. You are about to embark on one of the most exciting journeys of your life, and once you reach the end you will be a very different person. We are thrilled that you have selected Miami University as the vehicle for your life-changing journey. For over two hundred years, Miami University has been helping students identify and reach their life goals. Throughout our history, we have been known as a place where students can expect (and are expected) to develop meaningful and transformational relationships with faculty, staff, the local community, and of course — each other. As a Miami student, you will very likely study abroad; take an active role in one or more student organizations; research emerging ideas in a newly discovered intellectual passion; or take classroom principles and apply them effectively in meaningful contexts outside of the classroom. Miami is a recognized leader in developing enlightened global citizens, and our graduates routinely become leaders in their professional and civic lives. Excellence is our tradition. The phrase “I Am Miami” serves as a daily reminder of our institutional values, and these values are deeply embedded in Miami’s Code of Love and Honor. Miami Bound Equestrian, August 17–20: This fun and interactive program provides students the ability to explore the opportunities on campus for horse lovers and build relationships with other students who have common interests (no prior riding experience required). • •
CONFIDENT COMFORTABLE CONNECTED & CURIOUS Welcome to Miami! Your first year at Miami will be filled with new people, discoveries, and experiences. To guide and support you through your transition, Miami offers programs and events designed specifically for first-year students. Through these programs, you can become more Confident, Comfortable, Connected, and Curious. These “Four C’s” are the foundation for New Student Programs at Miami, and each element of the programs listed here aims to contribute to student growth in one or more of these areas.
Miami Bound August 16–20 MiamiOH.edu/orientation Miami Bound is a unique set of program options that offers leadership development and a variety of experiences during the days leading up to the start of the fall semester. Students who participate in a Miami Bound program move to campus early for one of the following experiences:
U-Lead, August 17–20: Participate in this annual leadership institute to introduce you to the Miami campus

and Oxford communities. You will learn about leadership through small group reflections, community engagement, and both high- and low-ropes initiatives. U-Lead is a fantastic and unforgettable way to jump-start your college experience and begin to explore involvement opportunities. The program cost is $125 plus early move-in fees. A Taste of the Outdoors, August 16–20: A series of outdoor recreation trips for those with a

spirit of adventure! Join us as we travel around Southwestern Ohio and Kentucky (no prior outdoor experience required). • Experience rock climbing and hiking in the beautiful Red River Gorge. • Explore the underground world of caving in Kentucky. • Spend a day canoeing down the Little Miami River and camp riverside. • Experience the thrill of the Ozone Canopy Zip-Line Tour at nearby Camp Kern.

Ride and lesson daily with trained coaches. Learn more about the Miami University Equestrian Program and become familiar with other facilities on campus. Meet new students prior to the start of classes.

MADE@Miami August 18–20 MiamiOH.edu/made MADE is a pre-semester program designed for students who are ready to make the most out of their time at Miami. It will introduce you
to values that will serve you well here: Mentoring, Achievement, Diversity, and Excellence. During these three days, you will move into your residence hall early; meet students, staff, and faculty who are here to support you; and start making a place for yourself at Miami University. MADE@Miami is open to all first-year students. Students of color, international students, and Miami Access Scholars are strongly encouraged to attend. Summer Reading Program MiamiOH.edu/srp Miami welcomes you to academic life through the Summer Reading Program, now in its 34th year. Participating in the Summer Reading Program is your first academic assignment as a Miami student. Miami’s 2015 Summer Reading will reflect the theme of creativity and innovation; the text is chosen each year by a committee of faculty, staff,
and students. Those who attend summer orientation will receive a free copy of the book; those who do not attend summer orientation will receive a copy at August orientation. Miami’s 2015 summer reading reflects ideas of creativity and innovation, on which our campus will focus for the 2015-2016 school year. The text, chosen by a committee of faculty, staff, and students, is The 46 Rules of Genius: An Innovator’s Guide to Creativity. Read the book over the summer and bring it with you when you come to campus in August. The Friday before classes begin, all new students attend Convocation, where the featured speaker will reflect on the book in an active and interesting way. After Convocation, you will join other new students for small-group meetings to further engage with the book and its ideas alongside faculty, staff, and/or returning upper-class students. Additional programming throughout the year will extend these discussions and encourage us to examine ways in which we can infuse creativity and innovation into our lives.

West Virginia White Water Adventure Trip, August 16–20: Join us on a white water adventure paddling down various sections of the New River. This off-site trip allows students to move in early on August 16th, before traveling with the Outdoor Pursuit Center staff to West Virginia (no prior experience required). • Learn to paddle a tandem inflatable kayak (ducky). • Spend one night camping riverside. • White water raft the class IV rapids of the Upper New River. The program cost is $575 and includes meals, transportation, and equipment, guided river tour. Early move-in costs are an additional fee. Second Year Experience
August 20–August 31 MiamiOH.edu/welcomeweek In August, four days before classes begin, first year students return to campus for Welcome Week. Welcome Week is a 12-day series of programs focused on exploring campus life and various aspects of college. Students attend social activities, gather information about student services, participate in large and small group discussions about campus life, explore community expectations, connect with many other new students, and meet with faculty and staff from their academic division. Welcome Week provides exciting, interactive activities, including University Convocation, which marks the formal opening of the academic year.

Student clubs and organizations represent service organizations, fraternities and sororities, academic and career-focused groups, and clubs that share interests in diversity, political, religious, or social justice topics. At Mega Fair you can even find sports & recreation and performance teams and ensembles. Supplemental Instruction Program Tutorial Assistance Program The Rinella Learning Center offers free tutoring in the following content areas: math, science, foreign language, business, and humanities. Students may also take advantage of Supplemental Instruction (SI). SI is a support program that targets historically difficult courses by offering free regularly scheduled out-of-class review sessions to all students enrolled in the course. SI improves student performance by teaching them how to integrate effective learning strategies in order to master course content.

The campus offers students of all majors an affordable opportunity to study and explore Europe. • Miami Faculty-Led Study Abroad and Away credit programs are offered in each of the six major continents, and range from a few weeks to a full semester. Faculty-led programs are held primarily in the summer and winter terms.

MiTech MiamiOH.edu/bookstore MiTech is Miami University’s technology repair facility, operated by the Miami University Bookstore. MiTech supports the university community with both walk-up technical support and hardware
repair. As an authorized Apple service provider, MiTech is able to complete most repairs on Apple computers on-site. MiTech also offers on-site repairs of Dell laptops and desktops. MiTech supports Miami Notebook customers with imaging services, software support, hardware support and loaner laptops. Currently located in the Shriver Center adjacent to the Miami University Bookstore, MiTech is a one-stop shop for all technology support needs.

Explore the Miami University Libraries — four unique libraries and two archives that offer more than just a lot of books and a quiet place to study. King Library is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week during the school year so students can get the information they need any time of day. Our facilities offer wireless internet access, laptop computer checkout, individual and group study rooms, scanning and printing, a coffee shop, and much more! You can access over 4 million books, tens of thousands of sound recordings, periodicals, videos, and DVDs, including many that can be accessed online or from your mobile phone. Office of Student Wellness 102 Health Services Center (513) 529-5047 MiamiOH.edu/studentwellness The Office of Student Wellness provides educational services and outreach to promote the health and well-being of Miami University students through programming initiatives, information dissemination, awareness campaigns, and policy advocacy. HAWKS Peer Health Educators are available as a programming and information resource.
ALCOHOL EDU for College and HAVEN: Understanding Sexual Assault
Student Health Service (SHS) 421 South Campus Avenue (513) 529-3000 MiamiOH.edu/health The SHS treats student illnesses and injuries and performs well-checks and physicals, in addition to services such as labs, PT, Women’s Health and STI Testing. We are open Monday and Wednesday 8 a.m.–7 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Hours vary during finals week and breaks. Summer hours are usually Monday– Friday 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. SHS charges for all services, and you may pay with credit card or we will bill your insurance plan or bursar account. SHS staff adheres to the HIPAA standards of medical confidentiality. No information about your visit to the SHS will be shared with your parents or anyone else without your written permission; we will share the information with another medical professional if required for your care. All full-time Miami, Oxford campus students are required to provide

proof of insurance coverage before the beginning of each academic year. If a student does not provide proof of coverage, the student is charged for the insurance the university makes available. The waiver form may be completed and submitted electronically; please check the Student Health Services website for the link.
Student Counseling Service 195 Health Services Center (513) 529-4634 MiamiOH.edu/studentcounseling The Student Counseling Service (SCS) offers a wide range of fully accredited psychological and counseling services for Miami students. The staff of mental health professionals provides help for most psychological, emotional, and interpersonal concerns. Our professional staff consists of licensed psychologists, a psychiatrist, and doctoral- and masters-level psychology trainees working under the supervision of licensed psychologists. All staff are trained and experienced in dealing with the concerns of University students.

Important SCS Information: • There are modest fees for psychological services that entail four or more counseling sessions per academic year, for psychiatric services, and for testing services. However, fee reductions are available such that no student will be denied service because of inability to pay. • Appointments are required. However, students in crisis are seen as soon as possible. All counseling and associated records are confidential and are not a part of a student’s college record.
All first-year students are required to successfully complete AlcoholEdu for College and HAVEN: Understanding Sexual Assault which are online, science-based courses that prepare students to make safe and smart decisions during their college experience. Part 1 of both programs must be completed by August 17, 2015 to avoid a class registration hold on their account. Additional information will be sent to each student’s home address and Miami email account over the summer.

During your time at Miami you will most likely have contact with the Sexual and Interpersonal Violence Prevention/Response Services through the various events we host, programs we provide, awareness ribbons we pass out, or even become part of the student organizations that help educate others (HAWKS, MARS, and WAVES). The center is a great place for commuter students to study, take a break between classes, and connect with other commuter students. First-year students’ contracts are in the campus-wide housing system and are assigned based upon Living Learning Community choices, roommate preferences, or other specified preferences as possible. Assignment emails are sent in late July/early August. Students have a selection of meal plan options to choose from to meet their dining needs. Miami’s food service operations include allyou-care-to-eat buffet centers, a la carte locations, to-go windows, and convenient campus markets.

Miami Tribe myaamiacenter.org Miami University, two rivers, and several towns in southwestern Ohio all carry the name of the Miami Nation, one of the American Indian tribes that inhabited the region that became Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Unfortunately the Myaamia people were forcibly removed from these native homelands in 1846 and are now headquartered in Miami, Oklahoma, the town that grew up around them in the late 1800’s. There are several ways to learn about the connection between the Miami Tribe and Miami University that began in the early 1970’s. Visit the Armstrong Student Center and read about this unique relationship in one of the Shade Room’s photo panels. While in Armstrong, visit the 2nd floor Smucker Wiikiaami Room where four display cases highlight the Myaamia removal, typical student involvement, cultural details about the wiikiaami (Myaamia word for home) and the historic significance of ribbonwork. Classes often connect with the work of the Myaamia Center which is located on campus and directs efforts to preserve, promote, and research Miami Nation history,

The university currently hosts more than 50 fraternity and sorority chapters, representing about 33 percent of the undergraduate student body. Certainly, you can take classes in art, music, theatre, architecture or interactive media studies, but why not also attend a play, a concert, or an art or architecture exhibition. You can also participate in choirs, music ensembles, theatre productions, or make art. You don’t have to be a major. Just audition for a music ensemble, choir, or play; or sign up to work backstage or join an arts club. Free faculty or student recitals occur almost daily in Souers Hall or other campus venues. All students may audition for theatre productions during the first week of classes, and the Theatre department includes students in all areas of production. There are ever-changing exhibitions in Hiestand Galleries in Hiestand Hall and the Cage Gallery in Alumni Hall. The Performing Arts Series brings internationally known artists to campus each year. The Miami University Art Museum has amazing exhibitions, and a student arts organization plans events and assists with outreach programs and school tours. Don’t Step on the Seal The University Seal is embedded into the sidewalk in the center of campus (also called the Hub). Miami tradition is to avoid stepping on the seal, out of respect for Miami history and values. If you do step on the seal, you’ll be punished by failing your next exam!

Rubbing the Turtles' Heads on the Sundial Just behind Warfield and MacMillan Halls you’ll find the Tri-Delt Sundial, a gift to the University from Delta Delta Delta sorority. It’s said that rubbing the heads of the turtles on the sundial is good luck.
Walking Around Trees on Campus If you’re walking with a group of friends on campus, and the group passes a tree, everyone must pass the tree on the same side. If the group splits to pass on different sides of the tree, tradition is that the friendship will falter.
